I love 80s EMU i never forget my first ride in early 80s from ipswich to ekka, i was awe with that sound and the A/C, It sad to see EMU being scrapped :(
I don’t know why but I can just imagine the day that the NGRs will be getting scrapped and how much we will realise how fast time has went but to be honest I may not see them because surprisingly QR like to keep their trains for a long time. From when I made this comment the EMUs are quite hard to find around the network now but I hope they stay around for that little bit longer as they are great trains and I will deeply miss them. 😢
I arrived at South Brisbane off the Brisbane Ltd from Sydney. The Merivale Bridge had just been built. I caught a Central bound train of diesel hauled Evans cars. I was delighted.
Interest video Adrian. It was interesting to see the end of life of these units. It is a pity the sets were not removed and installed in the NGR unit to replace those oh so uncomfortable seats. Thanks for the views.
Thanks Rob. Yeah the drivers all complained about their seats on the NGRs as well, very uncomfortabke. The diesel locomotives are the only ones that haven't faced being scrapped. Many have been cut up after accidents, and other sold to overseas railways, but none have been officially scrapped in Queensland. All good things come to an end and memories are all we carry with us.
this is every train lovers worst nightmare… seeing a train being destroyed 😭😭 (ik the ngr trains were out like when i was like 5 but i used the beenliegh and ferny grove lines which has alot of emu’s so this is still so sad seeing all the emus in death row)
Ferny Grove & Beenleigh is where they predominantly used as no NGR units can operate along the Ferny Grove due to the curves - they also are on basically all other lines bar for Goldie, Gympie & Airport lines, but it just is more a matter of luck with getting one.
Honestly, I think they are too good to scrap. This broke my heart to see. I'd even live in one - anything to keep them from scrap... Not sure how long these EMUs have left in service but surely even the interior trim could be used on the ones that are in service when some of the plastic snaps. Also, why 77 and 63? were these the most mechanically troubled?
They didn't have anything wrong with them on my last trip driving them. The 60 class (blind ended guards cab) were the ones that QR targetted to scrap. Machinery in Passenger Transport is subject to stricted Mechanical regulations and has a shelf life for safety reasons. So when it comes time to weigh up the cost of rebuild vs new, most of the time it's cheaper to buy newer. Most of the parts for the older units, are getting harder to get, Covid has knocked a fair bit of industry on the head. I hope that goes some way to answer your question. cheers.
I think it's cool that the steam trains still have a legitimate job of hauling cargo even if it's hauling trains instead of being a museum price in Sydney it's been 3 years since I last saw a steam train pass the train station and it was a Garrett
There hasn't been any QR Heritage Steam hauled excursions here in Queensland since the bushfires in 2019, except for one charter to Grandchester in early 2020 prior to the lockdowns. That was after much negotiating with the transport minister by the ARHS. I don't know when or even if we will have any QR operated heritage trips.
Great units. Sad to see them go. Like classic units in the UK, they've captured many memories in those who travelled on them for so long. 2023 was my last ride in a EMU, No 33
I was on one the other day and for some reason, it has been recently refurbished with seats similar to that on the refurbished SMU 200s. I think it may be a life extension upgrade or shortage of trains or something.
They are now going to hold off on retiring them until the next new downer trains enter service. As the NGR trains are almost done been fixed up, QR are ramping up refurbishment of the SMU/IMU fleets so they are going to keep the EMIs a little longer. But these are the later built Emu trains (those built around the mid-late 80s) as some of them aren’t even 40 yet.
I remember getting the old wooden rattler home to Newmarket on a Friday and going to work on Monday in the new electrics talk about game changer. Bet that Indian junk won't last 40 years.
Sure is mate. I couldn't wait to get away from Brisbane and working the electrics, but when I was going through putting this together, it got to me a bit. When you look back and realise that that was 11yrs of your life, and apart of that is now gone forever.... well it leaves an empty feeling. Thank you for letting me use your stuff.

@@lewiemcneely9143 Yep too true. Our State Government are so inempt that they actually had to call a halt to the scrapping of these First Generation Electrics. The New Generation Rollingstock NGR Electrics from India that replaced these EMUs, had so many faults and weren't reliable, that services were being cancelled because we didn't have enough Units in traffic to run trains. I was hoping we would get to the point where I would be rosteres on either Steam or a Diesel locomotive to haul the last set of old suburban coaches we had to fill in. I'm no longer in Brisbane mate, so I am not apart of Heritage traincrew, and don't get told anything. I'm not aware of any plans to run any heritage excursions. However Railmotor 2034+2036 will eventually be going to their new home in Longreach.
Hi. I don't know if QR is scrapping any more of the EMUs at the present, but when there was a cleanout of rollingstock and Diesel locomotives from Ipswich Workshops, they did it through an Auction sight. My advice is to either Ask at admin office to the Ipswich workshops, or watch on one of the railway interest group's facebook/ internet pages. Unfortunately I don't know who to contact directly. Cheers.
Train crews were not unhappy to see the end of the “dog box” EMUs. And as comfy as the ICE units were to travel in, they were absolutely flogged to death and were more trouble than not by the end. Barely got 30 years out of them…
Only the big fellas "I now being one" hey. I'd prefer a good set of Emu's over an NGR any day. Mind you, I'm glad I don't have anything more to do with Brisbane. Bless you mate.
I had only one job with QR it was counting people get on and off. I sent 5 days week for 2weeks 8 hrs day on this EMU'S. SHIT people hate been counted and there was a delay at park Road station and the people got pissed a me 🤣like I could get the train moving. Anyways thanks for listening 😃
Yeah the Sheeple are nasty beggars to deal with sometimes. I'm glad to be away from the Brisbane Surburban network, at least out here in the bush our passengers are happy tourists and pensioners. Park Road, Bowen Hills, and sometimes Northgate were where the Rail Police used to do ticket and other blitzes.... Lots of unhappy campers then, trains help up for ages.
I believe it was supposed to be, but I really don't know what has become of it, or the other unit used on the fairwell run. I assume they are housed inside one of the workshops buildings where the GSPE carriages were stored. Since leaving Brisbane and Heritage Traincrew, I don't hear much at all.
Unfortunately everything has a shelf-life and metal fatigue will condemn most pieces of rolling stock sooner or later. It's like the family axe, it's only had 3 new hesds and 4 new handles, but it's still a great axe...
