Hi Everybody, and welcome to my channel. This channel is more or less about the various forms of machinery which I have worked or have an interest in, as well as some typical Australian rural scenery . NOTE:- Please read the descriptions under the title. Cheers Adrian.
Dragline Maintenance Part 2
Over the course of the last few months, I had decided to try get a bit more practice pretending to be a mechanic. The 22RB needed some alterations done on how the boom was rigged. After it was brought back from getting a paint job, I discovered that wire ropes for the boom hoist were touching.
So with the help of a good mate, we re-reeved the pulley block and changed the anchor point back to the side it had originally been when I first bought it.
There are a lot of worn components that still need attention. There is a fair bit of slop in the levers and linkages, I hope to get that fixed soon. Apart from the fact that I managed to overfill the gear case and had oil leak out onto the frictio...

Minature Trains At Pine Valley Railway Warner

On Sunday 13th of October 2024, I was invited to come see my friend's Live Steam Scale Model Engines in action at Warner. Members of the Queensland Society of Model & Experimental Engineers, have over several decades, constructed over 2kms of track, ranging from 1'' to 7¼” gauge. My Friend Cliff, who I have known since our days with the opening of the original Mary Valley Rattler in Gympie, has...

The learning curve continues. I am putting together some videos of my experiences trying to fix and maintain my poor old 22RB dragline. All my working life, I have been the operator and as we used to say to the Fitters "We "F' 'em and You Fix 'em!" Well, now the shoe is on the other foot and I'm having to do both. All good if you know what you're doing, hey.. Slowly but surely, we'll get her wo...

Whilst working on my Dragline, the land owner had his paddock booked in for some vegetation control. The plane seen is a crop duster that is fitted with a defuser for laying pellets which are designed for killing off trees and scrub. All done with the proper permits, and in this case, it was re-growth that was being treated.

The 2 Dam Jobs And How They Turned Out

When looking through my files, it occurred to me that I had some unused footage and decided to make a follow up video about the 2 Dam construction jobs I worked on. The first was at a feedlot outside Capella which wanted a dam that they could top up from a nearby creek when it was in flood. The second was on my mate's farm to increase the size of his main dam before he sold it.

So pleased this comprehensive documentary came across my screen. Some months ago purchased "The Sydney Mail 1887-1972" by Gary Schwarzrock, ARHS in Sydney. This video complements the book perfectly, including the engaging Movie "Old Lady 964". Thanks Adrian, for this wonderful coverage and footage. Wouldn't it be great to see a C19 running to Wallangarra again! John
@johnbean5094 thanks for the encouragement John. I am currently doing another video about the Central Queensland Railway and the Men of the Steam era. I hope it will be as enjoyable as this one. Cheers Adrian
No drone shots?
@QueenslandTrainVideos Hey Johnno, yeah not on this one, but I have finally started playing with drone, so eventually you might see some aerial views. Really not sure about all the in's and out's yet. I was filming the Dawson Mine dragline with the mini this morning.

Great job Adrian, I know a guy near Childers that does castings, he has done stuff for Mary Valley and other railway societies.
@@steamtrainmark I will have to get all the details off you when I see you. I need a lot of things made. And Olds in Maryborough don't do cast steel.

I put a new boom rope on something but can't remember what. Oiled the rest. Laid the boom on the bucket every evening so the greasing was easy. Wore out a few grease guns with 2 hoses so I could reach everything and pump. Had several slivers from fuzzy cables from Army days but they finally came out. Paid several light bills slinging mud and turtles. Remain cAlm and wear that thing out. Get it hot and it'll start acting right and always wear a blue hat. GBWYou!

@bobbritten5673 I was surprised to see what they've done in Mayne since I left in 2020. All the blokes I knew down there are pretty well gone, nobody to reminisce with any more.
Saw some of your outfit there but no blue hats about the size of a sewing thimble on you. And why didn't the tesla driver catch fire, eplode and take several others out with it? At least I don't have to worry if you're in jail somewhere. Cheryl's brother was into that train stuff in florida but his was a plywood job and had a honda motor on it. Looks like you're up to no good but hope the 22-B isn't rusting down. I get my nerve up to watch somone running a pan and can stand about 30 seconds before my back starts thrrobbing and my butt goes flat. So carry on, Mate! Fall is coming on with frosts but leaves are just hanging on to see what's going to happen next. @rustybycyclebragg9258 Hi. How long short it be in relation to the buckets? Mine are 1/ 2 yard shown, and 3/4 yard. Also what size rope? I think I'm using 13mm (1/2inch) and the hoist and drag are 18•5m ( 3/4 inch)

@nealblackburn8628 hey do you have time to do some rebushing if I bring some bits and pieces down in October? I need to take out the play in the steering etc..
good talking to today mate, love the paki footwear lol I hope those aren't your mom's good scissors
Interesting video mate. You can sometimes get the oil off the bands by just letting them slip for a while and let them heat up.
@debozwi I hope that will work. I had degreased the bands and she still didn't want to turn. I have also noticed that the boom has a twist in it that I hadn't seen before... I hope it is a matter of the joint not being lined up properly when I put the bolts in... otherwise It might be an expensive rebuild. I have more footage of re-reeving the boom and I am yet to take a look at the steering and dig lock. So I will be on your case for advice again soon.

Thanks for these videos. I'm trying to figure out how to adjust my house rollers (conical rollers) on my 1953 22B. There too much gap between the roller and the frame. However, I don't see a way to adjust it. Is there something on the other side of the cap plate that allows me to do this? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hi mate. I haven't had to adjust my rollers yet, but if you look closely there should be shims at the front. You take some of them out and that move the conical roller closer to the circle. The other thing is if you turn the shaft that the roller is on, I was told that they are oval shaped and can adjust the height. You will need a big pipe jaw spanner. Hope that helps. If I can I might try myself and film it. But that won't be for a while. Cheers Adrian. Let me know how you get on.
I arrived at South Brisbane off the Brisbane Ltd from Sydney. The Merivale Bridge had just been built. I caught a Central bound train of diesel hauled Evans cars. I was delighted.
Hello, Fur Face and no blue hat? Are you changinbg your image or do digger drivers have to wear a different color hat? ? Just axing. You know the best thing for that rig is to RUN IT. Git it HOT. Then the clutches and brake bands will dry out and start holding. Been there myself too mny times. If they sit it'll have to be done and get the bands set even and not be slipping. Between the tropics and the heavy humidity it's a regular thing. So hope the train is paying the light bill and you're still out of jail.God Bless, you silly guy, you!
@@lewiemcneely9143 I need to get my blue hat dry cleaned , reshaped and repaired. Caps for mucking round in the grease and dirt, not to mention being able to wear earmuffs. I reckon if I can find someone to sell me some track pads it'll help as well. There's no adjustment because there's 2 missing, so she's tight on the pads, but loose on the propel chains. The spare bands I have don't fit, or at least not the propel and swing drums. So I cleaned and refitted the original bands. The direction lever hits the propel/swing selector so there is too much play in linkages and bell cranks downstairs too. It's too heavy trying to steer with it slipping... hope it will come good after getting them hot like you suggest.
@@adriannettlefold9084 10/4 on the blue hat. The P&H had a 7/16 bolt with a locknut. Set them with a feeler gauge but eyeballinbg them at the end but eth clutches were weak. They relined with brake lining and about knocked the bins down when they faded out. Ended up with the American and just ran it. Ford industrial flathead gas motor. Wore the gears out but the liquid asphalt made good crater. No more ringing. Spray brake clean on the bands but getting them hot will be best. Powdered rosin will make them bite too but people could get ran off for using it years ago, especially on shovel crowd clutches.. I'd go with the brake clean being a degreaser. It'll be tough digging in that rock. A heavy bucket might help but you'll get tippy with the long boom but it's all a tradeoff. That's a nice rig though. So remain calm and keep the cash flow going. Got to go mow and grind the downed leaves. BLESS you, Palley!
Well, it's the wearer of the blue hat! HI, Mateeymuss! Hope the train is treating you well and you still have a job! I'm mowing grass and snapping beans for a living. Should've started doing this when I was a baby. And thou knowest what's going on there is 9/10ths what is wrong with me, dear heart. I hope you're not in the midst of it. The ones that gave me my dose have admitted to having either 6 more or a total of 7 different KINDS of good old AGENT ORANGE and just used different colors for the names of the different kinds. I think a D-8 with a root rake would be better than a dose of that mess BUT it'll be you that has to deal with it. NO fun whatsoever. And glad you kept the 22-B. That'll give you something to do when the train runs you off. So come and see us. We're always home unless I'm gone to the V.A. but we'll probably be on the way back! God Bless You!
Hi Lew. Yeah not sure what the actual chemical used is. But it's white and the size of a large grain of rice. It's got a 10yr life. I'll get around to giving you a bell soon or later. Nice to hear from you. All the best, Ado

It's so sad for emu 16 been scrapped 😢😪😥
Hey Adrian, I'm curious how much gear oil does the 22B hold in the main gear splash bath as well as in the gear reservoir located under the drag drum? Thanks for your help.
@cjordan7284 I don't truly know and have discovered the hard way that I have over filled mine to you know where. I ended up getting oil on my swing/propel drums and I'm now in the process of doing my first service as well as degreasing my mistake. I will try get an accurate measurement and let you know once I have finished. Hopefully this weekend.
@@adriannettlefold9084 Interesting. I have a feeling my drain tube between the gear box and the chain case is clogged and the main gear box under the drag drum is not able to drain back into the splash bath. I took 15 gallons out of it last night. I'll drop the bottom end of the spash bath this weekend and see if I can see what's going on. I guess I have a partial answer--at least 15 gallons. ha. Thanks
@cjordan7284 I thought it was a fair bit but I don't know if it that much? We work in Litres and I had a 20L (5gallons) drum but didn't put all that in. But I didn't drain it all first either. Mine had a heap of water and custard type sludge that I started to drain the other day. So tomorrow I will go have another look and change the oil . The two plugs on the bottom of that gear case have about 2inches difference in level or there abouts... so between yours and my attempts we should come up with an answer.
@@cjordan7284 Do you have an email or contact number? I have just finished changing the gear oil on my machine and I found that so far it only took 15Litres tops. I haven't run it enough to see what oil is going back to the swing and propel vertical shaft box. but I did use diesel to clean it and it drained out.. so can only assume the horizontal rubber hose connection is clear.
Good vjdeo Adrian
When was the the last steam excursion that went out to cunnamulla
I remember getting the old wooden rattler home to Newmarket on a Friday and going to work on Monday in the new electrics talk about game changer. Bet that Indian junk won't last 40 years.
cable not wound on drums twisted
@edmcelhone4501 This was something I have learnt to do better. There was actually too much hoist cable and in actual fact it needs replacing as it's not the right type for this sort of work. My latest difficulty, is trying to get an Oil filter. It's a 6YDA MK2 Ruston Hornsby I pulled the old one out and now looks like none of my filter shops can find a replacement. Know of anyone?
Andrian nettlefold I don't want to be rude but can please answer my question why didn't the beyer garret get to haul this train to cunnamulla
@katrinalaw1479 I wasn't on the trip so couldn't really say why, other than the Garratt had a broken lubricator pipe which had to be fixed before the return trip. Perhaps the crews knew about the broken spring before hand as well... I just don't know. Sorry.
Oh that's ok I was just why the 1772d train had to pull the trip to cunnamulla and not the garret and I was thinking that the garret was to big to go to cunnamulla or maybe if they already had a last steam excursion to go to cunnamulla
Like with the passing of the _Capricornian_ to a Tilt Train only service, the withdrawal of the _Sunlander_ and the M series cars has left a noticeable hole in QR's Traveltrain fleet. I noticed the _Westlander_ and _Inlander_ services were sitting car only trains, which would make these services far from attractive to the average passenger for long journies. I feel that QR Traveltrain management have dropped the ball here, preferring to focus on their Tilt Trains and the _Spirit of the Outback,_ leaving a hole in train services to Rockhampton and further into North Queensland. Perhaps their intention is to destroy long distance train travel, aside from the Tilt Trains? As an aside, I found 1754 at Redbank recently, partially stripped. It seems her days are numbered... 😞
We will have to wait and see. I reckon after the Olympics there won't be any money and that will see things fall in a heap. 1754 if it is still being worked on will probably end up with a new maxi cab and 26L airbrake equipment, then head to Cairns.
Was the staff used for messaging between stations?
Hi, no it's the permission that the driver needs to ve able to travel from one station to the next. This ensures that his train is the only train that is on that section of track at that time and that he has no fear of colliding with another train. They used staff ticket as a safe working system, before electric signalling came in.
Needed a mechanical stocker

Hey Adrian, great video. Just a quick question, so I applied for a Suburban Train Operator job with QR, it’s still in progress but I was doing some research in relation to the position and I think I may have applied for the wrong position. I was wanting to become a train driver but it seems I got mistaken and thought the operator position was the driver job, but instead looks like it’s more shunting trains in a depot instead of driving them on the network. Just wanted to double check if this is correct, and if so do you reckon I should stick with it if successful and then apply for a driver job later down the track (no pun intended), or should I cancel the application and just wait for the driver job to come up instead? Thanks
Hi mate. If it's with QR, it sounds like you have applied to become a Rail Operater which is a.Shunter's position. This is a good position to get into QR and my advice is to take the job and when a guards job or a Driver's job come up you then apply for that position. External job offers don't come up very often and you might be without a job if you wait for them to offer a Driver's position. Getting your foot in the door into QR is the hardest part. Internal people get first chop over people like yourself as an External. Hope that helps
So just clarifying, with the shunter job, you get to drive and move trains, but only within the depot itself correct? Or do you just direct and attach and detach carriage etc.
@samuelwarrilow407 you don't drive anything. You couple up and detach, you switch points, you do computer work as in train lists, you operate signal panels. You call out trains from the stabling yards and put them into their allotted road when they come back to the yard. Driving is separate to this altogether. Like I said, if you are wanting a job with QR, take any job to get your foot in the door, then apply to become a driver. Otherwise look for a trainee driver's position with Aurizon or Pacific National or Watco
@@adriannettlefold9084 thanks for the advice, i have applied for PN and Watco, couldn't see any trainee positions with Aurizon. But I'll still wait for the results of the operator job and also keep an eye out for QR driver jobs as well. I have a causal job at the moment so I'm not at risk of being unemployed while waiting, but if I'm accepted in some form I'll go straight into the new job.
Great units. Sad to see them go. Like classic units in the UK, they've captured many memories in those who travelled on them for so long. 2023 was my last ride in a EMU, No 33

Is this locomotive still operating?
To my knowledge it needs a lot of work done to re-wire the electrical side. After an audit was done they found insulation on some of the heavy wiring melted and grounded it, from memory somewhere around 2018. It's parked out the back in the workshops at Ipswich.
