Nice pick of the 100 series. I seem to agree as well, I have always liked the 100 series the most, especially when they used to operate on the Gold Coast Line. Sadly, not much anymore but occasionally yes.
The only thing I hate about the IMU120 is the stupid chairs. The 'headrests' are more like 'mid-backrests'. I am quite tall, and the 'headrests' are just in just the wrong spot to make the seats probably the worst I have sat on out of the whole fleet. Surprisingly, I really like the ones on the NGR.
I don't live in Brisbane, but I think I have ridden in them all. The oldest ones had the handle you pull on the exterior doors when I first went there. The spirit of Capricorn intrigued me, with the pantographs on the end carriages, more like Melbourne's, not counting the newer HCMT or X traps.
i myself prefer those old classic EMU series, i was born in brisbane in 1995 and i have always loved trains but i am also a bit fussy too, yeah i'm a bit snooty but i do have an eye for the classics, Nostalgia is a big thing for me and if i were to do a list the old classic EMUs would be at the top
Yeah, I understand that! I do have a soft spot for the EMUs, and I do always enjoy catching them. For nostalgia, the EMU and ICE are definitely winners! That being said, the purpose of this channel isn't really to reminisce about old Transport, but to showcase a variety of buses, trains, Trams, Ferries, active transport options and a little bit of urban planning practice for good measure. I do always enjoy catching a few older Buses, trains, Trams and Ferries when I get the chance!
@@TalkingPlanning g'day mate thx for the reply, yes i too understand the reasoning for your channel, i guess i just have a bit to much love for the old classics i knew and grew to love, i've always been a huge fan of trains and planes especially, even a lot of things you don't really look at or you don't look at much of, such as old trucks, jeeps, tanks, taxis, even games, i am a gamer but i do love to go back to the classics now and then, like original crash bandicoot and even spyro, i also have a soft spot for specific animals such as bunnies, cats, horses, even tarantulas and foxes, while i love basically most animals those are just some of my most favorites, anyways i don't want to go to far off topic here so i do be hoping you have a great and glorious day and i wish you the very best of luck through this crazy pandemic the world is in right now, especially since having this whole pandemic is probably more than likely a thing most of us haven't ever had to really deal with before
As someone not from this area but who has an interest in trains, it's surprising to see such a big gap between the SMU200s and 220s, given they look almost identical in construction from the outside. Agree about one-size-fits-all not being great, in Scotland Abellio ScotRail have been trying to pull a similar stunt with the class 385s. Inevitably the result is a design that's simultaneously overkill on inner suburban services and also inadequate for express routes like Glasgow-Edinburgh.
Yeah, it's an interesting one - but a few small changes can make a big difference to a design. The SMU 200 hasn't had the best reliability reputation, but the 220 has held up pretty well. The truth is, you'll never please everyone with designing public transport, or ranking it, but I wanted to use a criteria that makes sense to objectively look at things.
The seats in the IMU120 would give it a comfort score of -1 IMO. Those bolt on head rests don't work unless you are shorter than 4foot tall. If your are normal person or above average height the hear rests dig into your back and force you to sit uncomfortably leaning forward. The one that runs on the early morning run (starts a Kuraby and runs on the Beenleigh to Ferny Grove line) reeks of mold and dead skin cells. If you sit down on a seat too fast you are greeted with a plume of dust and dead skin.
I am pretty sure that the SMU200 series has those sideways benches in both ends of a three car set, the only trains that aren't a mirror image like that are the ones with toilets, as they only have a toilet in one end and a few more bench seats with the wheelchair space since there is no room close to the cab for them.
It's been a while since i've caught an SMU 200, as I haven't caught many QR trains this year! Sideways seating is good if you need more standing space though
Heres to hoping that all of the trains on this list get at least one unit preserved as I am growing up in the Ipswich area, hope to see any of these ones in the future.
Its not a suburban train... but I do have another (early on) review I did back when I still lived in Queensland of the electric tilt train. ruclips.net/video/C8vJOcp3knU/видео.html
They can get a little uncomfortable after about half an hour, but I don't find the IMU 160 or SMU 260 to be much more comfortable either. At least the NGR seats offer a little extra privacy!
I believe the ICE and EMU use very similar electrical equipment, so that would make sense. The ICE would likely have different sound deadening inside, which makes them quieter for passengers.
I think your ranking is justified given the reasonable user perspective criteria. Two thoughts: 1. I would have explicitly mentioned the lack of intercar doors on the 160/260/NGR as a feature as I've noticed they encourages people to spread out. 2. I might be misunderstanding you but my understanding of the NGR upgrade is that the toilet is remaining in the same location, just bigger and now in both of the accessible cars. The toilet part of the issue with the current design is that the pathway around the toilet from the other accessible car is too narrow (Hence the solution of having one on both sides of the adjoining end of the accessible cars). Finally, if you have the time, an interesting video would be what you would like to see in the 20 new trains in Labor's election promise, e.g. one-size-fits-all or specific role; what features, etc.
Cheers! As much as I like the EMU and ICE, they are getting on in years and it is becoming harder for them do deliver a good passenger experience. I've always believed that the toilets were moving to the end carriages, but until the first refurbished train enters service, I'm not going to speculate any further! I didn't see Labor's election promise, but I'll definitely think about some new topics- as QR is no longer my local train operator.

Tangara also my favourite train but when I am inside of the tangara I can feel a bit sick. I don't know why but I think it's because they are starting to show there age.
