- If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s possible to 3D print a fully functional working model train then this video will answer you question…
This is a sponsored video by Anycubic, they have a brand new large format printer called the Anycubic Photon Mono M5s which I used to complete this project. They have given me a link for you to use to take advantage of the early bird offer they have for the 3D printer:

And to get the Sunlu resin you can check out this link:

Also for those wanting to 3D print their own Comeng EMU train I’ll have the edited STL files available on my website for free, you will also find a link there to the original files by JamosTrainos as well.
I’ll also include the templates and decals for you to print as well.

It would be cool if he had a venue to display all his creations for the public to see in person. Truly works of art. Id have to fly to Australia though, I live in the states.
He destroys them after every build.
@@JethroButton How do you know that??
I think he actually sells them, similar to the way Ferrari sells a F1 car after it becomes somewhat (*) obsolete at the end of each F1 season...but you might be right. I do think Luke moves onto his next project pretty often, and there might only be so many old ones you can store before kicking them to the curb.
@@JethroButton Clearly not, given they are on shelves behind him in his workshop.
How bout Luke comes to Oregon and displays his Multnomah falls at the falls’ gift shop
You're a master of modeling. You not only do top-notch landscaping & architecture, but you also invent and manufacture pieces. Thanks for so many good ideas. Cheers from Spain.
He's basically a mad man!
My mum used to work for Connex - she was at the station early in the morning greeting passengers. She has made some great friends that she is still in touch with.
Luke that has come up looking awesome! All you need now is the trailer car and other motor car to complete a 3 car Comeng!
Thanks, I'll be printing those over the next couple of weeks 😉 just planning to make a few more minor changes to the model, mainly around the windows to make it a bit easier to install them 😀
I have to tell you, your tips and techniques have helped me teach my kids to all love building models and terrain.
My 13 year old built a scene from the American Revolution that was of museum quality.
Appreciate everything you do.
Keep going ❤

As a fellow train travelling Melbourne teenager of the 90's who knows a little too much about our train systems, the first thing I thought of when you pulled the wheels out was, are they broad-gage or standard-gage, if they are not broad-gage you'll only be travelling from platform one at Spencer St to Sydney oh and you'll need to bring a diesel loco with you. Love seeing Melbourne PT represented, thanks
Its comforting to know that even you, a very calculated and talented modeler experienced the same challenges I have when painting and modeling. The thing is, you know how to respond when things go wrong. Great looking model, and I really like your videos!
Love the models and the videos. Not that I don’t like 3D printing but the older videos where everything was made from scratch hits different.
This is the only channel I have notifications for on, the videos and builds are always so high quality.
I only have the notifications on for Jason Jensen Trains....
Is it weird that I have notifs for all my subscriptions?
It looks like is just came from the factory! Simply stunning!
It's always a good morning when there's a Luke Towan video waiting.
Finally the legend returns
these kinds of hobbies are the main reason 3D printing excited me so much. I always knew it would be widely adopted by people like Luke Towan and hobbyists of all kinds. Even cosplay hobbyists benefit greatly from 3D printing, and it doesn't take away any of the skill or labor or artistry that goes into making the plastic look like something that is real. It's just another useful tool that talented people have at their disposal to make even more amazing things than they could make before, and it doesn't cheapen their accomplishments. And the longer it takes for me to get a workshop setup for a 3D printer, the more affordable and advanced they become.
Really nice Comeng
I think if I ever get a printer it’ll be one of them, the tough resin looks great for a robot I’m going to build, you did an amazing job on this train too.
Yeah I was presently surprised at how durable it was!
3D printing has definitely come in clutch for me. Im not a great scratch builder by any means so having the printer handle the details like that has been a great tool! The model looks great!
Long awaited is right, my friend. I've been missing your videos. Welcome back.
good to see our man is back at it 🙌
Thanks mate... still here 😉
This is absolutely awesome! Love the accurate details and extreme effort you went to! Great job mate.
This is one of the more interesting 3-d printing videos I've seen yet.
Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks Ian, glad you found it interesting 😊
Glad you're back
I am 😄
This is fantastic! It is indeed amazing what can be achieved with 3d printing these days. But I have to say the printing bit is only part of the process. The model you've produced here, and the skills used, are still beyond most railway modellers. The CAD stuff alone takes hours of research, measuring and tweaking, but it is a very rewarding process to see your work emerging in 3D!
Superb creation of detail and an explanation of not just what you've done, but why and how. Absolutely expert filming too and could easily be dropped into a documentary or film of that period. Salutations de France
WoW,😮not sure I have the patience to get into this much detail……..You Have to be passionnate about this😊
YES! Finally. I have been waiting for a new video for a while. It's great to see you're still around.
Thank you, Luke!
The key to realism is understanding the correct level of detail for that scale. You nailed this! I have learned to make many things on both my filament and resin printers.
Tinkercad is restrictive yet capable.
My uncle would love this video, he's really into model trains, but I don't think he has a computer and he lives quite a way from me. Great video, anyway, as usual :)
Nice build, a project like this is perfect for days when the weather is less than pleasant.
Luke Towan , Nightshift and Plasmo
The trifecta of master modellers..
Great build , highly detailed and well explained..
Cheers
That is very nice Luke. I got to drive that type of train for 13 years and I always had a great time with them.
So nice to see a video of yours pop up in my feed again 😊 The models are fine art as always, but I want to appreciate the work you put into editing these videos because you do an excellent job. So easy and fun to watch, but there’s clearly a lot of effort put in to make it so. Thanks for allowing us all to live vicariously through your projects once again, see you in another few months! 😅
the thought of doing some melbourne rolling stock has been bubbling away in my head for years, i had no idea that so many people were already on it and had progressed it this far, fantastic work yeah
It's been a while. Good to see you're back.
Dude holy shit, I used to watch you so much but I forgot you, I’m so happy I found your channel once more
idk if you already have one, but i and alot of other people would appreciate a video helping people get into model making.
Another work of art! 👍those windows! damn 👌
I've just messaged Jamos was definitely shocked that you used his files. Good job Luke!
Glad you're still alive! I was afraid you might have been taken out in a train crash.
that vat cleaning process is genious. And the mono 5s looks like an awesome machine. makes me want to buy it even more. Ive always wanted to make my own model trains
The first thing that popped into my head when i saw what you were building was "The 8.12 to Flinders Street has been delayed, and is now expected in 10 minutes. Connex apologises for any convenience" Oh the high school memories.😂
Awesome work, Luke. 3D printing has opened up a world of possibilities when model making. Without it I wouldn’t be able to recreate the iconic Washington Metro stations to go along with my HO scale subway cars.
Connex! 😆
back when I was in Melbourne, searing the connex's service was always the best starting piece with other passengers, and Yes, mostly happen on the stopping train, or a crowded platform waiting for the train which should showed up many minutes ago. 😆
Ooh this is really cool. Just like last time years ago when I watched a bunch of your videos, I am getting all sorts of ideas. Might get into the hobby someday when I have money for it.
Insanely calming, with loads of tips and tricks! thank you, Luke, you are a legend mate.
You made this very well....I like it!
This is an awesome display. You are a fantastic modeler. I can’t wait for your next video!
Paint cracking can be frustrating but in this case I genuinely think it adds to the weathering.
Fantastic modeling work as always.
Yeah I did think that as well, I definitely need to do a bit of weathering in general 😉
Well this is perfect timing....now i know exactly what im watching on my lunch brake! Very cool, Luke
Thanks Lorrie, hope you enjoyed it 😊
This is incredible! I hope one day I'd be able to do this with my own designs, and you absolutely knocked it out of the ballpark.
Amazing job, and keep being awesome! :D
Nice workshop, top job with plenty of skill and patience. 👍
glad you're back! with the sea of youtubers quitting without further notice, any prolongued inactivity is scary. that being said, personal life comes far before youtube
Congratulations very nice model, excelent craftsmanship and atention to detail. Well done.
SWEET TIP FOR WOOD AGING.
Take a pice of steel wool and put in a can of vinegar, leave it over night, or up to 48 hours.
Take out steel wool and "paint" with the vinegar. The wood get an gray/brown old look. It`s AMAZING.
Keep it in a can for many years. I have also used it on my homebuildt sofa table, tv table and some shelves in my house.
You do Amazing work!
Love from Norway
Its simple. I see Luke post a Video and I click.
Another nuts model. Well done!!!
Such an impressive stuff I wish my grandfather was still alive so that we could do model trains together I think he would have loved this
Awesome Luke just awesome!! You are indeed a GREAT artist!!! Keep up the good work! Cheers Onno.
I love the old Comengs, I still catch one to work every day on the Upfield line. I'll be sad to see them go, they've been real workhorses of Melbourne's metropolitan fleet.
yaaaaay! welcome back!
Just imagine; these HO-scale railcars can be built with camera systems for a forward view on whatever layout they'll run on!
I love SUNLU resin, man
A great almost 10 minutes anycubic ad Luke. The rest of the vid. You know, the part of the diorama. The other half of the video, great. As always. Hughes from Spain
Thanks Sasurai, yeah it was a sponsored video but I'm glad you enjoyed the last 10 minutes, hopefully there was still some tips and techniques you enjoyed seeing 😉
To be honest I think it's really helpful to see him show what's actually different in a new model instead of other people who just show the machine but don't go into detail.
Every time that I realise, that there was not a new video from you for a long time, next day or two - bam! - there it is :)
Cleverglogs! A nice job Luke. Thank you for the inspiration to try something.
I liked this channel more when it wasn't so much about 3D printing
You know what that sounds like... someone who doesn't have a 3D printer 😂
Sorry to say but there will be lots more 3D printing... it's the way of the future!
yoo the 90's VIC flash back - amazing work!
Imagine telling one of the old guys 30 years ago that you could build your own train models at home with perfect accuracy and detail, crazy!
Mate it looks sick and Amazing for making a Comeng train
I lived in Melbourne for thirteen years (originally from Perth, now back living in Perth) and I can't count the amount of times I rode on one of those Comeng trains. The Connex logo is a fun touch, they were famous for being a terrible operator and lost their contract. Moaning about them was the favourite pastime of ever Melbournian. All your dioramas are like little tributes to life in Australia.
"...they were famous for being a terrible operator and lost their contract."
Many people unfairly denigrated them, but for the first few years they met their (highly-set) performance targets about every second month, doing better than M>Train which hardly ever met them. Connex were so bad that when M>Train pulled out, the government asked Connex to take over the entire operation! Perhaps they weren't that bad after all?
They lost their contract because the contract was up for re-tender every few years, and they were outbid by another company.
I used to catch these trains to school every day back in the early 2000's, so I was surprised you chose the connex livery over the current metro one.
Excellent! Thanks Luke.
Wooooo! Here it is!!!
great work again. still enjoy the fact that you still use tinker cad :) I still use it too.
Ha ha, yeah it's just such an easy program to use! And can do just about any job when it comes to making small details for model railroad 😊
@@BoulderCreekRailroad My little girl started to use Tinker Cad for school around 6th grade. So I ended up using it along with her for class and school. I know a few things I wish it had. I wish it worked on the PC and not in the cloud. I wish it had a way to filter down into the layer object list. I wish it had a better radius tool or a way to bend objects etc. but for the quick speed of use, tinkercad is my go to 3D tool. The girl will be going into 12th next year. So I have been using the tool for around 6 years now.
Oh wow, I definitely agree with those missing features! They recently added the magnet 🧲 tool so hopefully they'll figure out a way to integrate more features like that in the future...
@@BoulderCreekRailroad I have seen the magnet tool, but have not tried it yet. I'm still working on the basics of the 3 Dimensional Shapes (Cube, Sphere and cone) :)
I plan on making the same Comeng only it being a 3 car set. and with the modern Melbourne Metro livery
Well done, very detailed build.
I remember those as verycold during the winter month.
Maybe a Harris trainnext.
On.y the other day I was wondering if you were all good! Looking forward to this vid!
MVP here is the modeller who created the 3D model and elected to upload it for free!
A big plus I see to 3D printing these, is that you can work in the less popular gauges without having the hassle of not being able to get the model of train, buildings or whatever else you might like.
Comeng train!
Quite cool also since they are currently in the process of retiring them sadly
Yeah, I spent many hours on these, and the Hitachi with the windows that could go down... those were freezing in winter!
@@BoulderCreekRailroad Freezing in winter, blazing in summer.. and always with that burnt brake dust (?) smell.
Ah memories.
Oh my gosh! I never new anyone can do that! Thank you so much for the great ideas you made me a great modeler!
This will make me realaxed for the rest of the week
Ola Luke Towan muy lindo su trabajo %100 saludos desde Urguay 👍😉🚂🚂🚂🇺🇾🇺🇲🇺🇾🇺🇲
Very nice. I design and build my tram models since 2011 with 3d prints.
Awesome!
Excellent video. I hope to acquire an Anycubic resin printer soon.
OMG….. long time no see …. Well done
I was waiting for a new video! I was so excited when I got a notif for this video, I love your videos and have been watching for years!
Thank you once more for a true vision of descriptive view of this build.
This is an unbelievably excellent video, and what an absolutely beautiful train! Thank you!
No worries mate, really glad you enjoyed watching 😊
Welcome back Luke. Great to see more videos.
As always. Amazing level of detail. Inspiring and I always look forward to watching your video's. Craig
Very cool creation!!! You did make me giggle when you said, "average hobbyist like us...", I would consider your skills well beyond 'average'. My main geekage is scale 1/10 and 1/14 scale rock crawlers, semi trucks and construction equipment. I use my FDM printers mainly for making support pieces that are hidden so there is little finish work that needs to be done. I have been looking at resin printers for printing more detailed parts that do not need as much work to finish; however, I lack a space to set it up where I can have adequate ventilation. If I did take the leap back into HO scale, I would likely get a resin printer for custom creations.
It's been a while Luke, Welcome back! ❤️
Fantastic video Luke!! Great to see other people doing this as I've been experimenting with 3D printed British N Gauge locomotives and rolling stock with great results. I've been using Tomytech TM series chassis bought from Plaza Japan, but I'm about to have a go at designing my own mechanism to get the correct wheelbase, which can be printed and built by anyone. These kids of models may not always have the same features and fidelity as those from major model train manufacturers like Bachmann etc, but they give modellers who enjoy a challenge a much more affordable way to enter railway modelling using their own printers. It's something I'd really like to expand on as part of our range.
I would definitely watch a video of you going into more depth about modelling in Tinkercad. 😊
OMG!!!
I missed your videos!
I miss your soothing voice.
My wife and I were wondering where you went.
🙂
Great to see a new video from you Luke, hope all is well. Very impressive as always.
Thanks mate 😉
Absolutely fantastic. You certainly achieve realism. It was well worth the wait.
Incredible effort!!!
Wow! Amazing!
Finally a new video!
Just a short 5 month wait 😄
