Recipe
Ingredients for 4 portions
2 tbsp grapeseed oil
1 brown onion, diced large
2 carrots, peeled and diced
2 potatoes, diced
1 green apple, diced
600ml chicken stock
1 packet S&B Golden Curry
2 chicken breasts, sliced in half
200g flour
2 eggs, beaten
200g panko bread crumbs
Oil for frying
3 spring onions, sliced thin
Salt to taste
Steamed rice to serve
Method
1. Start by cooking some rice in a rice cooker to serve the curry.
2. Heat the grapeseed oil in a large frypan and sweat off the onions and carrots with a pinch of salt.
3. Once they start to soften, add the chicken stock.
4. Now add the potatoes and simmer for 15 minutes or until the veg is just starting to soften.
5. While that is cooking, heat the oil in a cast iron pan for frying the chicken katsu.
6. To crumb the chicken, season it with salt and then dust it with flour followed by a dunk in the egg and finally the panko crumbs.
7. Back to the curry, after the potatoes and carrots have been cooking for 15 minutes add the apples.
8. Once the stock comes back to a boil, add the Golden Curry and stir through.
9. Cook the chicken katsu in the oil at 170°c until golden brown on both sides, about 7-9 minutes.
10. Once cooked, let it drain on a wire rack and season it with salt.
11. To serve, add the rice in a bowl and the curry next to it, finally slice the chicken katsu and serve on top.
12. Garnish with spring onions.
13. Enjoy! - Хобби
The way you explain things is helpful to me, thank you. Explaining that you’re not looking for color on the carrots, just sweating them - that sort of thing is SO helpful for those of us who can’t cook.
Oh man!! This is my newest favorite also!!
Had it first time last summer, and have made it a few times since!!
A tip to anyone who likes to make things in bulk.
The curry sauce with the carrots, potatoes and onion mix does freeze very well for quite a while.
As does the fried up chicken.
You can basically pre cook all this, then reheat it for a quick dinner at your convenience.
Do recommend air frying the chicken upon reheat.
Made this for the family tonight. They loved. Thx mate.
I love how Andy calls himself out. I noticed how the board was moving on him. Most chefs wouldn't say a word about it but he used it as a teaching moment. Same with the egg shells. Great job. Excellent video.
Thank you, i appreciate that!
Don’t have to be perfect Must acknowledge our humanity Lovely to see Chef Andy not trying to pull one over on us. His approach is so refreshing
his wet hand got dry too :D
@@andy_cooksplease, please teach us how to chop!! I need knife skills to make my life easier!
@@andy_cooks Hey Andy! Love your videos and watching them during lunch time (in Germany) keeps me going till I can try to recreate your magic for my dinner ;)
I have a question regarding your cutting surface... How on earth di you keep your big wooden cutting board clean..? Thanks in advance for your feedback! :)
Wet hand dry hand. Genius idea, I always have more breadcrumbs on my fingers than on the food 😅
The videos that you make are comforting too haha - keep it up mate :)
Thank you!
Andy, can you make a japanese Karaage chicken dish. That is my favorite guilty pleasure.
Thanks Andy! U r a great chef with passion without the swearing.
Holy moly!!
Cooked that dish and I'm stoked! I will include that definitely into my mental cookbook!
This recipe absolutely smacked. One of the best dishes I have ever made. Thank you Chef!!
Just ordered the curry blocks! Must be pretty good when all you add are simple vegetables and still makes best dish if the year 😋
I love andy's head shake everytime he tastes his food

Man! this Master class it´s so great that I hit all the buttons!!!! Thank you chef!
Andy your videos and recipes are EPIC!! I’ve just ordered the curry paste, looking forward to cooking this! More Thai recipes please 🙏
Yo Andy , this one of those dishes where if u get a recipe for an authentic from scratch one, it is night and day better than the store bought stuff. If you’ve ever been Japan and just eaten at any of the Japanese curry restaurants or even chains (like CoCo Curry) it’s remarkable the difference there is despite S&B being a solid curry.
This is true. Coco curry is awesome!
Very good video. I make it all the time. I use the same curry cubes. I prefer it with a chopped pear instead of apple. The stickier short grain rice rather than long grain is a good idea. I top mine with cashew nuts. Some places top with coconut and raisons. Many options, all good.
Japanese here. Instead of adding big chunks of apple, we like to grind it up to a paste like apple sauce then add it in. You can also add a little bit of dark chocolate, some people do that as a secret ingredient.
Interesting! I normally use honey for sweetness and add star anise and fenugreek for savory. Will have to try chocolate!
Yeah, Japanese here and I was like "diced apple? Seriously?".
@@itsmederek1 Honey and star anise sounds awesome too.I will have to find out for myself :)
Ive experimented with grated apple and other grated fruits in my curry and found that the sweetness is not missed when not including it and the flavor is better without the fruit in there. Only add fruit into your curry if you know thats what you want
@hanjiplayer thanks. I was wondering what apple in curry would taste like. I'm tempted to try it put but I'm worried if I don't like it, a lot of food will be spoiled. Maybe I'll grind some apple up and mix it into a single portion
You can grate the apple and then put in the curry. You will love it. Japanese don’t leave the pieces of apple in chunks
Love this video! This is a classic in our house growing up in Hawaii. Chicken katsu curry is bomb.
I discovered S&B last year. Great product to add to a simple meal. Love your work Andy. 👍🇦🇺
Day 53 of asking for satay pork curry please 🔥
Embrace the satay, Andy.
Yes!!!
The satay revolution! ✊️
Aye Andy, ffs lad
Satay yes pork naahh
Thank you so much for showing how easy these recipes can be for a starter home chef. I’m trying to do better at cooking for my family but also that are delicious. I want to see if I can do Chicken katsu later. Thank you for helping me be reignited to have passion.
Tried this tonight. Was amazing, thanks for the video
Happy New Year , from Germany. In the past two years, we have increasingly discovered the cuisines of Asia for ourselves. Thank you for the list of ingredients and the recipe. We will give it a try.
Happy New Year to you! Let me know how to recipe goes 👌
Fun fact! If you do not have apple cube green cabbage up very small and as the sauce cooks with the carrots it breaks down in the sauce and gives a silky texture ❤️ ✌️ 🇺🇸
Andy, thank you for introducing Japanese chicken katsu karē. Please enjoy pork katsu, beef katsu, fried prawn, hamburg steak as toppings as well. I think adding soy sauce , lea & perrins sauce and ketchup and pitting karē sauce into the blender would be better.
Letting it rest overnight in refrigerator is also a great tip.
Make curry with those roux cubes for my flat mates every so often, always goes down so fast
Oh no, he made the most common mistake of eating curry with chopsticks... nobody in Japan does that.
yes
Looks amazing! First had S&B in college 30+ yrs ago when a Japanese friend made some for Sunday dinner. Still one of my favorites!
Seeing the apple chunks being included brings me back to my childhood, my mom used to make it this exact way. Might have a go at this preparation for nostalgia's sake
Woah didn't know it was that easy defs giving that a go! Also low key ramping up the Asian cuisine for that uncle title aye ;) haha
ʟᴇᴛ'ꜱ ᴛᴀʟᴋ☝️ ɪ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ꜱᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ (ʙɪɢɢᴇʀ) ᴛᴏ ɪɴᴛʀᴏᴅᴜᴄᴇ 🤝
This is my favorite Winter comfort meal! I use the S&B powder because I don't like the mouthfeel of the roux cubes, and because it's more versatile. But regardless, S&B brand is the way to go!
Why do people always use the pre-packaged curry sauce with katsu? It seems to be a recurring theme. Is it time consuming to make in small batches or something?
Nice video, I live in Japan and have been here for 30 years. Never seen apples cut up and put into Curry (Kare). My wife is Japanese and she even said no one puts apples into the curry. There are curry packets that have apple flavor already in them.
You are right. I was like "diced apple? Seriously?" I'm Japanese btw
Never and no one are a wide brush. regional variations happen. people put apple in curry in Hirosaki region, grated or diced. There is even restarants putting apple in the pork katsu. You should take her there.
Andy made this for my wife tonight and she absolutely loved it! Thanks Mate, Andy
One of my old head chefs told me not to trust chefs that didn't have tattoos or use "substances" he was right. RIP Chef Wayne, long live Chef Andy.
TAIWANESE BEEF NOODLE SOUP PLEASE! I NEED IT
Just tried this recipe. Absolute winner. I’ve always seen those boxes on the shelves and never known what that are. Thanks for enlightening me Andy. I wish we were mates sometimes.
Hey Andy! Can you please cook a hangi? 😅
Im doing a homemade curry pretty soon, im going as far as making beef stock from scratch. Im so excided to try it

Ramen please!
Any you'd like to make!
Just interested to so each person's take on they're favorite type of Ramen 🍜
A tip i learnt from Mum: A knob of butter in the curry at the very end helps make it a little bit richer!
I cooked this tonight for my wife and myself, and she loved it. And I’m definitely no cook. This one is going into the “Favorites” list. Thanks Andy, keep up the great work.
Looks great Chef! Ive got a mate who's wife is Japanese. She belts out this and many, many of these gems like we'd pontificate over a vegemite samo..... and leaves us for dead. Looking forward to this years adventures!!
I’m very quickly loving the diversity of food that Andy cooks. I’m of Asian background, so Asian food for me will always be my first choice to cook. I’m impressed that the meals are all very authentic across all cuisines that he makes
I made this.
It was absolutely delicious. I did omit the apples though but even without it was amazing. I was fortunate enough to find the exact Japanese curry powder.
The only issue I had was that I overcooked the veggies. I think with a little more practice I'll be able manager my time better. But everyone loved it. It was so good. Definitely a keeper!!!
I really appreciate that he understands how time-consuming some parts of a recipe are and will use available store-bought ingredients like the curry.
That's how they make it in Japan, with the curry cubes. It's authentic.
Looks amazing, thanks for sharing it. This is usually eaten with a spoon, by the way. No need for chopsticks.
What brand pot is that? The white enamel black outer?
Lamiaayyyy (Filipino/Bisaya language) 😍😍😍 Yummy 😍😍🤤🤤🤤🤤
never seen whole pieces of apple in kare - only grated or incorporated with the roux. i've used house brand vermont curry my whole life, but recently found the deliciousness of kokumaro curry. if s&b golden curry isn't up to your tastes, feel free to try other brands. also, you don't have to eat curry with chopsticks, most japanese will eat with a spoon. it is a stew, after all!
So true about everything you said. Apple, chopsticks....
My japanese wife was mortified by the apple. Usually Japanese MIGHT add some apple sauce but her family never used it. I've had it both ways but i can definitely say the curry without apple is better.
I love curry rice but I cannot use the flavour blocks because they contain wheat flour as a thickener.
S&B make a curry powder which is gluten free (it comes in a small, red tin). A maize flour slurry will thicken the sauce. Rice flour crumbs (or potato starch double fried) are the closest things to panko people with wheat allergies can use to coat the chicken (or you can put bite-sized pieces of cooked meat in after adding the apple).
The main rule of Japanese curry someone from Japan told me is: there has to be potato and carrots! 🤣
Instead of using plinko chicken and chicken broth, soft beef brisket with a little fat still on the brisket and beef broth mixed in this curry sauce on rice is amazing.
We made this for dinner! It was so amazing! The chicken is next level! And I love LOVE the green apple in the curry! This is totally worth doing! The grapeseed oil is a must! ❤️❤️❤️
家庭料理が知らんところで世界一とってるの面白すぎる
you've tasted japanese curry, but have you heard about kaigun curry (curry made by Japanese navy)
This looked so good until I checked out the ingredients of the curry paste. First ingredient was flour! Way too many carbs for me 😭
I make curry a lot from scratch. I bought those curry blocks but have not used them yet because I am a creature of habit. This dish looks good with the apple.
Really, this? People should stop be amazed of every bullshit, just because its from japan.
Can u say something on how ungle roger watch ur ytshorts was not disappointed on ur fried rice and got the compliment "fUiyOh!!"
I agree totally with you. An absolutely delicious meal that is fast and easy. Pork loin for tonkatsu would perfect. The Golden Curry is kind of addicting. Thanks for another great video.
Looks delicious love all the vegetables and apple. I'll be making this recipe yummy Thank you for sharing Andy have a blessed day stay safe and healthy.🙏❤🙏❤🙏
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
My favorite dish also
It a great one 👌
The special curry that was added. Is there anything else I can use instead of it. I can't seem to find it in any stores here. I'm in Africa
please can you Come up with a dish thats great in protien low in fat and carbs and tast great. i always see you make known Recep. i thank you in advance.
Good Job💯💥

japanese curry
Each family has a different secret ingredient,
I put two small pieces of dark bitter chocolate
this will always be a great dish. ever had Sinigang? :) soup season baby
Anyone else dumb enough to bite down one of those chocolate-lookin curry cubes? Just me? Aight.
No it is very tempting for lots. Aka the forbidden chocolate

@@andy_cooks satay pork curry ✊️🔥
Best dish, period 😎
this is on of my fav meals for the winter, it's so comforting and ez to make ! i make it with chicken tighs, it's so juicy 😋😋
It's a great dish
one of my fav's!! thanks Andy :) Pro tip, if you use a spray bottle to moisten the panko before you crumb, crisps up awesome, and gives you time to remove the loose crumbs before they overcook in the oil :) That curry also goes awesome with the aussie classic curry sausages :)
SALUTE FROM OTTAWA CHEF..
VIDEOS ARE FYAAAA !!! 👊🏾🍺
Thank you brother!
Replace the chicken with pork! You'll never go back.
I always wonder, what do you do with the frying oil once it's cooked down after you're done with it?
Japanese-style curry is absolutely delicious! I am curious, though - would you be willing to make a version that doesn't use the premade curry blocks? I know most Japanese households tend to use the blocks, but they can be kind of tricky to get a hold of where I live - plus, a 'fully homemade' version would make it easier to control what you actually eat, and thus make it a little bit healthier!
Japanese style curry roux is quite easy to make with fairly basic ingredients - butter, flour, garam masala, curry powder are key, from memory. There are many good videos on RUclips.
@@ticctacc I've sort of made it from scratch before myself, but it ends up being quite a hassle to... well, properly mix the curry roux into the curry itself; following the recipe my girlfriend found (if I remember correctly, it was a version that was supposed to replicate the curry shown in Persona 5, which she's a big fan of - it turned out pretty delicious, so we've stuck with the recipe, despite it being a hassle to make), I'm supposed to take a small spoonful of the roux and slowly stir it into a ladleful of the curry, and then mix the stirred curry + roux into the rest of the pot, repeating the process until all of the roux has been mixed in. It's annoying to say the least, and it's always fun to see alternative methods!
I saw J. Kenji Lopez-Alt do a super simple version of it, but I somehow suspect my girlfriend won't be a fan of his version.... plus he emphasises how important the specific type of curry powder he uses is, and I've never seen the brand locally.
Still, thanks for the advice; all too often, people feel the need to put others down for asking simple questions, and it's nice to be met with positivity for a change :)
If you have access to Amazon you can purchase there.
@@rebeccagammel656 Is that the curry powder? I'll look into it - thank you for the advice! Would prefer finding it locally if possible, but if not... what can you do.
@@eivind261093 I have not looked for it in our local Asian groceries but I bet it is available. The brand name is S&B which is well known. The product is named Golden Curry Japanese Curry mix. It was available in mild, medium hot and hot with different serving sizes as well. I opted for the 5 serving container in mild and medium hot. I combined one of each with 1 1/2 cups of broth and it was quite tasty. Tonight I will use additional seasoning servings and more broth to see if more is better.
CAN YOU MAKE A CHICKEN NAMBA VIDEO ONE DAY ? PLEASE

The Steak Fiorentina that I gave been waiting for (102days) would have been the best dish for 2022.
I lovvvvve Japanese curry. It’s one of my go to easy comfort foods. That and okonomiyaki.

this curry brand is so salty, I could never use more than a than one piece.
Definitely going to make this. Love your videos.
Can confirm...delicious!! Thank you sir

When Andy cook(s)book?
G'day Andy. Been looking to get a dough scraper to use at home for a while. (Managed bakeries for the last 30 years so always have one to hand at work). Do you sell yours anywhere?
Very similar to the recipe I use although I add some fresh ginger. Smells amazing.
nice 👌
I am a big fan of your channel from Japan. This is called katsu curry. Katsu curry is mainly made with pork. I also like it very much😃カツカレー大好きです❤
Andy, did you see that Uncle Roger approved of your fried rice?
The best Chicken Cutlet Curry’s I’ve ever had was both in Japan! One is from Coco’s Curry House in Okinawa, Japan and the second was a street cart in Mainland Japan! One was a well known restaurant and the other was literally just a guy who brings a cart to high popular areas late at night and he said he also goes out during the late afternoon rush when people are going and coming from work or wherever they are going. Just can’t get enough and I can’t wait to go back to get my hands on it again! lol
You can also make a curry stew. Cook the onions then add cubed up chicken. Once cooked, add stock and potatoes and carrots, serve over rice.
That looks so delicious. I might have to try and make this dish!!!!
Absolutely worth a try!
Like from Japan.
I can lift 1000 lb after this meal😄❤️❤️
