The video shows how to make a delicious chicken katsu curry, which is a combination of two of the chef's favorite Japanese foods: curry and katsu. The video also features a sponsored product, achinamoto, which is a type of glutamate that is safe to eat. The chef shows how to make the dish step-by-step, starting with the optional yukari pickled cabbage, then moving on to the main event, the curry. The chef explains the importance of caramelizing the onions and adding an apple to give the sauce a sweet flavor. Finally, the chef shows how to fry the chicken katsu to achieve the perfect crispy texture. I think this recipe is fantastic, and the steps are easy to follow. I like how the chef emphasizes the importance of caramelizing the onions to add a sweet flavor to the sauce. I also appreciate the optional yukari pickled cabbage as it adds a refreshing tanginess to the dish. As for the chicken katsu, I think it is essential to use panko breadcrumbs to achieve the perfect crispy texture. Overall, this dish is a perfect combination of sweet and savory, and I can't wait to try it out!
As South East Asian i can promise you that the amount of MSG that's added in this meal is not even that much, compare to the insanity alot of us ate every day.
In Japan, you dont eat Katsu Curry with chopsticks, any rice with “sauce” or curry you normally just eat with traditional utensils so fork and you good, otherwise its near impossible to grab the rice and the curry at the same time.
In Japan, curry with apple and honey in it is known as "Vermont curry" (the roux is made by House Foods). It's likely the case that many people in Japan have heard of "Vermont curry" but not the state of Vermont.

As a clinical dietitian, THANK YOU for talking about the whole MSG myth thing. Irks me to no end that people have been so utterly misinformed. yayayay, you're the best papa!
I'm really happy you're talking MSG, but would appreciate you talking about the xenophobia behind it. "No one knows why it started" but it even says it in the link?
via the web site of the mayo clinic: Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified MSG as a food ingredient that's "generally recognized as safe," but its use remains controversial. For this reason, when MSG is added to food, the FDA requires that it be listed on the label. MSG has been used as a food additive for decades. Over the years, the FDA has received many anecdotal reports of adverse reactions to foods containing MSG. These reactions - known as MSG symptom complex - include: Headache Flushing Sweating Facial pressure or tightness Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations) Chest pain Nausea Weakness However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MSG.

I question "this is where you could add some steamed veg" (the commonly used combo of carrot and potato tastes incredible if you let it cook with the sauce - I typically cook the veggies until fairly tender in just stock, before adding a thickening agent, whether homemade or not) - but aside from that tiny detail, this looks incredible!

I've made this recipe twice now and I LOVE IT SO MUCH OMG
My husband and I made this last night. It was absolutely brilliant. Thank you for the lesson.
i literally made this before even seeing the end lol that's how much trust I have in this man
The food god has answered my prayer. This is absolutely one of my favorite dishes. I have been waiting for him to do a version that is completely from scratch. Will be making this soon!
This brings back major childhood memories. I would often go with my parents to a sushi restaurant where all the dishes were on a conveyor belt and one of my favorite dishes was the chicken katsu. Can't wait to recreate this recipe :)
We just got your cookbook in! My hubby is a kitchen manager at an assisted living in new braunfels and we watch your videos religiously. He’s hoping to get some ideas from your book on new foods to cook for the old folks.
Yes papa! The recipe I have been waiting for I was in Japan for 3 years and would eat coco ichibana pretty much every day with tonkatsu and scrambled egg mmmm thanks excited to make this.
As someone who lost the top portion of his ring finger thanks to a mandolin slicer, YES.
Those mf'ers are out to get you. Be SUPER careful when using them because you have the possibility to cut something off and never get it back.
Rip man. Really sorry
I've got a slice missing from the side of my thumb. Terrible experience!
just throwing it out there, there's a fusion cuisine "Indo Chinese", originates from Kolkata area of india, main dishes are 3 types Chicken / Paneer (indian cottage Cheese) / veg (mixture of veggies : carrots and cabbage being the main ones), the dishes : Chowmein, fried rice, Manchurian (dry or gravy), chilli (dry or gravy). I would love to see your take on those josh
Sponsored by Ajinomoto? Uncle Roger is so proud right now

V proud as a Nomoto
I made this today and oh lawd I'm in heaven. the pork was so crisp, even on the last strip that had been sitting in the sauce. the curry was delicious and silky smooth. I''ve got 2 more jars of that sauce in the fridge, I cannot wait to have them again.
Hello Josh. This was one of your best videos. Equally entertaining as it was informative. Thank you.

Not even uncle Roger:
Joshua: [ gets sponsored by *Ajinomoto* ]
Why should the man who submitted to CCP demands get a JAPANESE sponsor?

Just received my copy of your spiral bound cookbook in the mail today. Everything looks awesome and I can't wait to try some of the recipes. The smashburger looks "to die for"!
Amen!
It's possible msg is actually a healthier alternative to salt because it's ability to improve umami is greater than that of salt and so you end up eating less sodium overall.
In the Philippines there are small stores called sari-sari store and I work in one and we sell MSG and its *Ajinomoto"
I made this one again and holy shitttt banging yet again. Still Josh’s best recipe imo
I'm so here for Josh standing up to misinformation around MSG at the beginning of the video. Made my night better
since you already made katsu curry, how about give katsudon a shot? One of the best rice dish ever!
I appreciate you posting this!!! Seriously it is really hard to find a good Japanese curry recipe on RUclips that doesn't use pre made curry mix.
Never had Japanese curry but it looks sooooo good. Is it like gravy with rice and fried pork?
As South East Asian i can promise you that the amount of MSG that's added in this meal is not even that much, compare to the insanity alot of us ate every day.
In Japan, you dont eat Katsu Curry with chopsticks, any rice with “sauce” or curry you normally just eat with traditional utensils so fork and you good, otherwise its near impossible to grab the rice and the curry at the same time.
Spoon dude you eat rice with a spoon not fork.

In Japan, curry with apple and honey in it is known as "Vermont curry" (the roux is made by House Foods).
It's likely the case that many people in Japan have heard of "Vermont curry" but not the state of Vermont.
As someone who lives in Vermont when I saw Vermont curry in an anime I was like "OMG".
Dude. Straight up. One, if not THE BEST AND MOST ENTERTAINING cooking video I've watched. You're incredibly talented & witty. Thanks for sharing you, with us ❤ "where the hell do you think you are?" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Definitely saving this recipe for later...but I'm still using the ready made sauce for now 😅
As someone who used to live in Worcester, y'all driving me nut with this. It's pronounced Wuss-Stir. One is what you do to your coffee, the other is what kids called you in grade school. 😅
Tried the recipe turned out great but I used chicken instead of pork because my family dosen't like pork much but it all turned out great took me a little longer to caramelize the onions
Funny enough I just bought some MSG by that brand for the first time 2 days ago, and made some yummy chicken stew (it was yummy without it tbh but it definitely added something)
BRO I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS!!!!! You’re a god
Makes you eat more than you would without it. Not always a good thing, but does make food taste more elevated.

Absolutely my favorite Japanese dish of all time
Joshua: uses MSG
Uncle Roger: YES!
That's the first thing I thought...

via the web site of the mayo clinic:
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinese food, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats.
These reactions - known as MSG symptom complex - include:
Headache
Flushing
Sweating
Facial pressure or tightness
Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas
Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)
Chest pain
Nausea
Weakness
However, researchers have found no definitive evidence of a link between MSG and these symptoms. Researchers acknowledge, though, that a small percentage of people may have short-term reactions to MSG. Symptoms are usually mild and don't require treatment. The only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods containing MSG.

Hi! Im from Holland and all my mother teached me is how to cook potatoes and some meat. When I moved out I turned to Asian cooking and ur videos reallly helped me out. Thank you , for the videos and your lovely book! Keep it up!
You’ve answered my prayers. I’ve been dying for a legit from scratch j-curry recipe for years now
I question "this is where you could add some steamed veg" (the commonly used combo of carrot and potato tastes incredible if you let it cook with the sauce - I typically cook the veggies until fairly tender in just stock, before adding a thickening agent, whether homemade or not) - but aside from that tiny detail, this looks incredible!
