    Boardman was a total freak, a beast, and a legend. He rode clean in the era of dopers. And he had a medical condition which meant he had very low testosterone. He was eligible for a medical exemption certificate for testosterone which would have boosted his performance, which he refused. We should all be in awe of boardman.

    Before this race Leblanc had sniffed at how half the peleton could beat Boardman's hour WR. After Boardman tore him to pieces in this prologue Boardman hit back with "at least we know which half Leblanc is in." Legend!

    • @alanben75
      @alanben75 7 лет назад +8

      Chris was actually refused a TUE for testosterone, due to his condition, osteopenia. Pre Tour de France days as an amature cyclist, he had a VO2 Max that was compatible to Saïd Aouita. It was VO2 max that was the reason that Lance Armstrongs figures didn't add up. VO2 was a more acurate measure of natural ability. Boardman didn't dope. If had, some one who could produce the wattage that he did for his first hour recored and could have consistantly road and recovered (a lack of testosterone prevented that) would have gone on to challange overall. Boardman did what his body allowed and did it well.

    • @benedictearlson9044

      I'd agree. If he was doping he'd have been far more successful, as it was he could do these massive efforts but they would take it out of him and he'd be quiet for the rest of the 3 weeks.

    • @And-rc9yy
      @And-rc9yy 5 лет назад

      Alan H, I thought I read that Chris Boardman was offered a TUE for his condition when doing his hour record on a conventional bike i.e. as close as possible to Merckx. Did you make a mistake in your comment, did you mean to write that he was actually 'offered' a TUE.

    they are all about saving a second or two.. the biggest aerodynamic brake is the rider, which makes up to 90% of the front surface area of a bike and rider travelling in the wind so the maximum a modern bike could save over on of those bikes is far less than 10% plus the lotus was a very aero frame to begin with, a shape like that would surely be banned by the UCI.

Ok he was in the form of his life using the Superman position, he beat Rominger's record, who at that time was being coached by EPO kingpin Dr Ferrari. Armstrong didn't win every long TT in his career. Thing is with Boardman he races in precision, he can control short time trials, or 4km pursuits, not long TT's.

    @bergslag Boardman did ride the fastest ever prologue, FACT. Lemond would beat anyone, he rode 25km in 1989 @ 54.545 km/h. Boardman was a track cyclist, he had more pure speed than Cancellara. But i"d say Lemond was untouchable over longer distance, his VO2 max was in the 90"s! (very high!)

  • @nightowl8936
    @nightowl8936 12 лет назад

    This is the fastest TT in terms of speed, and LeMond's 1989 ride was almost as fast over 24 km, and Lance Armstrong was just a tad slower than this over a 58 km time trial ... but of all of these, I would say LeMond's is probably the best because both Boardman and Armstrong were riding more advanced bikes than LeMond had in 1989. That Lotus bike is one of the best, and Armstrong has the HED3 and Trek technology on his side. But all three rides are memorable and should be respected.

    @phillyvinilli "In 5 years time cancelarra will be forgotten" I beg to differ. IMO cancellara is one of the greatest cyclist of this era if not the best. For me cancellara is the essence of a true cyclist. He has practically made a mockery of the ITT in the past decade, while steering away of any doping suspicions (which both AC and LA can't say) He has also participated and won many one day classics. Just watch TDF stage 3 2007 and 2008 Olympics road race to see what this guy is all about.

    Brilliant observation that. Of course we all know how effective drug testing was, particularly in the 1990s when EPO wasn't even detectable and out-of-competition testing was a farce. I'd like to think that Boardman was clean, but passing drug tests doesn't prove anything.

    • @treygray2817

      @@treygray2817 Boardman said in an interview that he never doped because he was shit scared that if he did, he would have tested positive and his reputation would have been in pieces. I don't think he ever took EPO. Which means that with a bit of luck, he will live longer than a lot of the other top riders of that generation.

    Ja I enjoyed this guy at his best, I just never understood why he didn't win a longer time trial in the tour and give Indurain a carrot there he had the pedigree for it if you can do the shorter distances of 2minutes or more effort you can do long distance it is a fact.Only sprints use different muscles for 45 seconds or less, he had the lungs to do it potentially.

    I'd put boardman above cancellara at their peak, only in the prologue. And only because no one else can focus like boardman. here boardman thrashes riders full to the brim with epo. boardman won clean. QUITE a feat. An amazing athlete, with the best ability ever to focus it all on 5 minutes.

  • @genderpretender

    nothing against chris boardman
    but it was also the shortest ever prologue (i think)
    i reckon cancellara cud ride that course in less time - and can also be the first person to ride 50k in less than an hour

    boardman was a clean rider,rominger was not,and im not 100 per cent sure indurain was clean as well,boardmans power to weight should have made him a tour de france contender but as he was clean he could never recover in long stage races.

      and you know that boardman was clean because...?

    • @markhancock7527
      @markhancock7527 9 лет назад +7

      he was able to stay with the top riders over a week but then did not recover as well as them.he produced the right amount of power and was the right weight to win a tour de france.this was said by greg lemond,so why didn't chris finish high in a tour de france because he was clean.all the top riders of the time where taking epo,it is well known that from about 1992 onwards epo was being used by some top pros and as years went by most pro riders where force to take it to get work,so yes I believe chris and a few others stayed clean.

    • @alanben75
      @alanben75 7 лет назад +1

      Chris was actually refused a TUE for testosterone, due to his condition, osteopenia. Pre Tour de France days as an amature cyclist, he had a VO2 Max that was compatible to Saïd Aouita. It was VO2 max that was the reason that Lance Armstrongs figures didn't add up - and this was Greg LaMonds argument for a long time. VO2 max was a more acurate measure of natural ability. Boardman didn't dope. If had, some one who could produce the wattage that he did for his first hour recored and could have consistantly road and recovered (a lack of testosterone prevented that) would have gone on to challange overall. Boardman did what his body allowed and did it well.

      After your logic every track sprinter ever was ckean because "doping doesn't help on short distances". I think we need to call Justin Gatlin and Ben Johnson that they can stop doping now since it "doesn't help that much on 100m since it is a short distance"

  • @gregy55902

    Everyone that plays down Lemond's TT is an absolute wanker. I'd like to see CB do 55kmph after 2000 miles of racing, but the rides are incomparable for this very reason. Yes this is a good TT, but Lemond's was over 3 times longer and almost just as fast. Basically, all this bickering is useless. Boardman was best at short TT in the prologue, Cancellara is modern TT 4 time world champion, and Lemond was able to will himself to victory in '89 TDF with a devastating TT time.

    • @stevegandalf4739
      @stevegandalf4739 4 месяца назад

      Lemond was a much better all round rider than Chris, who was a TT specialist. He even managed to win 2 TDFs after his brother in law had blasted him with a shotgun in a hunting accident. If Greg hadn't been shot, he might have been able to win 5 consecutive Tours de France ... and without using EPO.
