Well it's more of a mind-controlling way for the parent to demean the value of their daughter's personal decision to date before marriage while, at the same time, impose some kind of religious doctrine through physical means.

What thoroughly bothers me is that I have dated some of these kinds of women in high school who have felt DEEP regret for having even held my hand. It saddened me at the time to see such indoctrination...and it saddens me even to this day.
Jonathan Biohoo Yeah, I would know a lot about that. I was brought up that way as well. I felt guilty to even talk to a boy, alone. It's hard not feel guilty when you've been brainwashed into believing these things since you were a kid.
Selina Rasul Also I think it sells the idea that girls and women are property like a car. Before they are married they are the property of their father. Once they are married they become the property of their husbands. Also, like a car they depreciate greatly in value if they have been "used." I reject this idea but unfortunately a large number of people think this way.
I had a friend who couldn't attend sex Ed class because her family were extremely religious but I always told her what happened in class that day.I felt she needed this information especially when her mom refused to tell her anything once she got her first period.My friend thought she was dying in happened in school so I told her what my mom said to me on the issue of your period.So I agree purity balls are so creepy and harmful.

dolphintattoogirl IDK, I remember a chapter in the bible that reads like a stud book for horses except the animals who's lineage was shown were human. Human pedigrees. Man's name begat Son's name, begat.... It really did look as if someone were breeding humans. It reminded me of looking at a stallion line in someone's horse breeding program. Even as a small child this struck me as weird. (I only recognized it as a breeding record because my family raised horses and I had my own class A Welsh Cob breeding stallion and kept my own record. We didn't say "begat" but that was the only difference.)Even now that sort of creeps me out.

I was 12 in 1959 and my parents gave me 'the talk' which included the admonishion that having sex before marriage was to be avoided. It seems as though men could have sex all the time, but girls who had it before marriage became 'fallen' and no decent man would marry a non virgin. As a result I became very uptight and afraid to let a boy even touch me, unless dancing, because of the fear of losing that precious virginity. Pregnancy was also a great fear as well as girls who got 'into trouble' were shipped off to homes for unwed mothers before they started to show with a story that they were going away to school. I personally knew three girls, including my cousin, who had this happen. Why now in the 21st century with several excellent forms of birth control available and the stigma of sex outside marriage a non issue would these poor girls be put through this degrading and old fashioned angst producing trial. Chastity belt anyone?
These kids of strict christian parents don't need to be coerced into a purity ceremony at 12. They need sex education! Encouraging purity without even explaining what sex is can be dangerous!! If teens (fueled by intense hormonal changes) decide to try something sexual, they can end up with STD's, pregnancies and a whole lotta misery...misery that is the failure of the parents to equip their pre-teens with factual information about sex. I say "factual" because in the church I went to, masterbation was considered a sin, and we were told that god would punish us... a statement that CLEARLY isn't based on fact!
And, in reference towards the idea that a girl's sexual behavior (or, more specifically, lack thereof) is a measure of her moral value or spiritual worth, I can't help but wonder what happens if a girl is raped or sexually assaulted? In addition to the obvious trauma of such an experience, how would it affect a girl's sense of self-worth, if she has been raised to believe that any sexual behavior, consensual or otherwise, will cause her to be "impure"?
Stacy Boyd Well, looking at the bible, since the girl was supposedly a virgin and not married, there are very simple laws about this: "If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives." - Deuteronomy 22: 28-29. So, that's really simple, rapist: pay the daddy 62,5 pounds of silver and you can ravage her as much as you want in the future, because you can never get divorced. Yay! whats screwed up is that inserting shame into sex and affection for years on end isn't a lesson that just turns off when you get married. The brain doesn't work like that. Most people's stigma, which they were bred into, remains even after marriage. Life lessons are not a switch you flip and "its okay after marriage" is irrelevant to a brain that has been trained to associate a certain subject (like sexuality) with supreme shame and defilement.
It taints you and your decisions, and thus your life choices, in ways you don't even realize.

I always thought the worst parents were the ones who just pop out the kids and then pretty much ignore them.
But now I'm not so sure.
It's about finding a medium of being involved and giving them freedom. This is too much, ignore them is not enough. We know telling them something is forbidden never works, if anything it fast tracks them to it.
I am all for dads being open and HONEST with their daughters about sex! Its a great thing, an important thing! Kudos to your dad for understanding the right way to do that. Its not by saying you're your daughter damn boyfriend, eww. Lol

Remington: I have to disagree. Parents do a lot better to "ignore" a child than to engulf and micromanage it, if the parents are at all personality-disordered. I'm not saying not to feed a child or make it sleep outside or things like that. Agreed, that would be worse.
My step dad suggested a purity ball to my mother when I was about 13 which was actually when I had just started questioning things and was basicaly on my way to becoming an atheist and I basicaly told my parents after that suggestion they can't control me forever and I'll do what I want and you can't ask that kind of promise of a 13 year old and you can imagine how that went over. Drug tests it went over with drug tests.

one of the problems is: you can tell your 4 year old son that he will eat the chocolate after dinner while knowing he wont be very patient to wait till then, but imagine telling your boy that he wont eat chocolate until after 2nd grade... the next problem: what if the girl stays "pure" and marries only when she's 27 or... never? or maybe the girl is so eager to be sexually active that she marries at 17 with a total jerk? i can go on naming problems but you get the picture. in any case this is totally damaging and in a sense even immoral.
In any case the best solution, if I were a girl, is to become a lesbian. And I'm not even kidding :-D

My best friend is very religious, which is nice, but all her friends from church (including her) marry in their early twenties (19-22) because they want to move in with their boyfriends and - yes - have sex. If they were not religious I am sure they wouldn't get married that young. Doesn't have to be a problem but it can be, as you pointed out.
Purity Balls give ownership of the girl's body to her dad. Then the ownership passes to her husband. So Wrong!!!

One of my biggest problems with "waiting for marriage" - Imagine you're buying a car. You've never driven a car before, never even been inside a car or touched many cars. You have to pick a car for the rest of your life, and you can't drive it at all until you've made the commitment.

Its sick to think in the bible fathers slept with their daughters and relatives slept together. It was perfectly normal for men to sleep with any woman they wanted to (read about Samson, before he married the second time), but if a woman has slept with a man she was not pure any more. The bible down plays us woman so much, I cannot believe I was ever a christian. Just thankful that I grew up with-out a father.
In the bible, only one father slept with daughters and they got him drunk to make him do it. Their children were considered enemies of gods people (but of course, as a people, individuals could change their ways and gain favor in gods eyes).
This is by biblical knowledge. I can tell your not christian, and that's fine, but in the bible, a man is not to have relations with a woman and her daughter, even if the daughter is not his (stepdaughter). Lev 20:14 the hebrew word for wife and the word for generic woman are the same word (isha אישה), so translations might mix it up.
If you think about it, the relationship Christians have with their deity is incestuous. Christians are God's children, and the Church, which consists of Christians (again, God's children) is his bride.

I feel like some kind of purity ball would only work if daughters were held back from socializing. For example, home schooled kids are much more likely to run away or have a child out of wedlock because their world is so small. Signing a certificate just gives the Dad something to hold over their daughter's heads later when he doesn't like what she is doing. And what happens to the really smart 12 year olds that refuse to go to a Purity Ball; Hos do their parents feel about her after that? This is too freaky to support.

As an American Christian, I can safely say that purity balls are not a common practice outside of some fringe evangelicals. I'd never even heard of the idea until I found this video.

I actually searched on google "Purity Balls" before watching the video for the same reasons as you but the these purity balls are as creepy as the "Purity Balls" I first thought of.

I think sex before marriage is a good thing because it helps you discover your own sexual needs and wants. The likelihood of being 100% sexually compatible with the one and only person you've slept with (and are now married to) is very unlikely.

This weird religious obsession with virginity and being "pure" unnerves me. How much evidence do we have to throw at them to make them realize that simply telling your kids that all sex=bad is repressive and ineffective?

I know a lot of people are pointing out the double standard here, and I'd like to point something out. The bible is quite clear on who you can have sex with - anyone you own. Wife, wives, slaves, concubines, prisoners of war, etc. It's the good book, remember?
And since women really can't own much, too bad for them. (OT says you can't take their jewelry away.) I need to get me a copy of that book... oh, yah, I have several copies and rejected their usefulness as anything other than toilet paper. And only in a dire emergency.

In one of several of these "purity ball" documentaries, a woman in her mid to late twenties explains how she's never been kissed or held hands with a man and has no intentions of that until marriage. Really! Holding hands! This means she's never known human physical affection outside her family in her life! She's young, attractive and sees the intimacy of the sexual act as filthy and to be avoided until marriage or death, which she perceives as one in the same.
That can lead to something very serious. She could mix up fraternal affection with sexual affection and that could lead to incestuous ideas. I'm not exaggerating, heh, wish I was. But not having any external physical contact (ven something so innocent as holding hands) can mess up with a person's mind.
Are those people aware we are not in the middle age anymore ?
i cant imagine not being intimate with my wife prior to marriage. how could anyone marry someone they haven't been intimate with? you can shelter kids all you want, but if people arent compatible in the bedroom, the relationship wont last.

I can remember promising and agreeing to this (not the actual ceremonies and such, but just the concept of abstinence until marriage) before I even knew the meaning of the word or knew what sex was. I always thought it was a really odd dynamic how until you're married, sex is bad, harmful, filthy, etc. but then somehow as soon as you get to your wedding night, all of a sudden it's supposed to be this glorious, magical, completely acceptable thing. That idea of literally going from filthy and immoral to expected and acceptable literally overnight was always confusing to me. Like if you shelter someone so much and condition them to think that it's all completely filthy, how do you expect them to automatically embrace and love it overnight?? I don't understand how people can think that is a healthy way to approach sex.
I remember in 8th grade there was this program at my school called Right Choices for Life. Thinking back on it, it may have been influenced by religion. Although most of the time it was them telling us not to do drugs, or have sex. I just joined because they came every week so we missed a class because of it and if we didn't we had to do work in the library. I remember the last day they were there they were just showing all the STD's you can get from having sex and that jazz. That was our sex ed.

Another problem I see with that is that the parents who pressure their children to remain abstinent until marriage is that it can pressure some young adults to get married too soon. I grew up in a Christian Conservative area, and I knew a lot of kids who got married to their high school sweetheart or first boyfriend/girlfriend soon after graduation, and the church would often pressure them to start of family soon after marriage. This made getting a career or education established even more challenging. Getting married too soon would also create friction in the marriage. This led to a lot of 20-somethings who were single parents, divorced, and struggling to get an education/career.
You should totally wait until "the right time and the right person", but your wedding night isn't it. Still, Do Not Ever begin having sexual relations until you are 100% ready and are with a partner you trust and feel comfortable with. For some, that's in the mid teens, for others it's early twenties, for some it never happens. Do what's right for you, not what you believe to be expected of you.

Sad part is my family has never told me about Sex, I had no idea how different men were from women until my friend explained everything to me. I was in highschool at that time, just about the age of 16. Heck I didn't find out most things until now, and i'm 18. All Family Life taught me was puberty and how it works. Never about birth control or anything else of that. And when we had it again, I think my mom opted me out of it, considering they only went over the same thing they told us in middle school. My school counties is so controlled by religious parents, it's not even funny. My friend would tell you the same things, they never taught us anything.
I guess i'm lucky I had a friend who's mom told her everything. Not many people are.
And to think, until the 'missionaries' showed up, and messed up, the Hawaiians hardly ever wanted to marry an inexperienced partner. Older tribe members taught younger how to give and receive pleasure. At least that was what I learned from a a Hawaiian history teacher of mine, in CA, back in early 70s! Love and Peace

Although I do admit that the name "purity ball" comes off strong when you first hear about it, you do know that a purity ball is doing the same thing sweet 16's were meant to do? Originally girls could not have a sweet 16 if you were not "sweet" (i.e. pure) because the point of having a sweet 16 was to honor the value of chastity by celebrating those who keep it. Not some excuse for a party. And gifts were given to the young lady by family and friends to praise her for this, because families wanted their young ladies to see that being pure was something praiseworthy, something to be admired.
If anything purity balls are simply bringing purity to the forefront of family values in a time where sweet 16's no longer mean what they use to.
I grew up Catholic and I was told the same little speech about no sex until marriage and girls need to be more reserved and boys can basically do what they want because they are boys. I was told that when a girl kisses or is with a boy that her 'value' goes down
. Well, when I was 18 and I had my first real kiss and relationship I felt... Dirty and terrible about myself. I have actually been an Atheist since I was about 16, but the teachings of Catholic Sunday school classss were so embedded in my brain that my first experience made me think terrible about myself and that I shouldn't have done that. I cried. Mostly through High School I felt pretty sheltered like this video said. Kids and teenagers need to be educated and be able to think critically about their actions and be able to make their own choices.
I still don't understand why my brother was able to go out and do all this stuff he wanted to do but I was not.
I have never heard of these Purity Balls, I've known of the rings, but these little Father-Daughter dances sound pretty creepy.
RockTheDragon, Most kids are pretty cool until their parents screw them up. I am proof of that and have never really gotten over it, and I am "retirement" age. I would have been better raised by wolves. The head knows better, but the emotional destruction goes to the core.
Fairness is a concept that life does not embrace. At least we now have the internet which allows people to be exposed to different ideas and cultures. When I was a child I believed everyone's life was very similar to mine. I know much better now.

What subject do you teach in High School?
I remember back in middle school. I was forced to go church and they tried the whole purity rings thing. My family tried to get me to do it but I refused, saying that I didn't need a ring or a signed paper with the added pressure to be a good person.

That is exactly what this brought to my mind. I was comparing Purity Pledges to Sharia.
A broken Purity Pledge, in America, probably doesn't result in a stoning or a beheading, but it can do so much emotional damage that it could influence the way a woman relates to matters of sex for the rest of their lives.

Lord = Husband + Dad = Boyfriend. So, God is totally ok with a lack of fidelity. Groovy. How come Dad gets Mom AND a girlfriend?! Poor mom.
But, here's the question. Does the Girl have to break up with her dad before getting a boyfriend. "Dad, it's not you, it's me. I just, I think we should just be immediate family and see other people.
I just wonder how many women over the last thousands of years have suffered and/or died because they were not born with a hymen or a small/weak one or accidently broke it through normal life activity or who's sexual organs were not "resistant enough" during their first times.
My school forces people, regardless of religion, to take sexual education.
They have moved a step ahead into the future.
In which countries do you have these "Purity Balls"? I haven't even heard about such an absurd and I live in Poland which is quite catholic country. I'm pretty sure you won't find even one old men/women who isn't catholic. At least some of us the newer generation are turning atheist.
+19arti10 I think it is an American phenomenon. It is linked to Christian fundamentalism. The abstinence only method for birth control and STD prevention would be an area of common ground between these people and the Roman church but not much else.

I waa catholic and never heard of this "purity" until recently, either. It's a new American trend you find in some of the evangelical protestant churches.
Its a evangelical/baptist american thing. I grew up surrounded by Catholics and this is not something they do. I've never seen this in Canada either.
Most of it made sense, until the part about the kids choosing oral or anal to remain 'pure' - since part of remaining pure is not even to kiss. If it were me, as soon as I was tainted by the impure kiss, I'd be headed right for the good stuff.
Never heard of these "Purity Balls" before. A very scary idea, but somehow not surprising behavior for Evangelicals. They seem to think "evil" is contagious, and avoiding evil is easy - just don't see it.

I'm 12 years old, from a SUUUPER religious country (Iran) and my parents never taught me ANYTHING about sex until i went to biology class (and i also learned what the hell it was on the internet)
I did something like this when I was around twelve, it involved an "abstinence ring." I'm a male in my twenties now and am not interested in sex or relationships. I can't tell if that had something to do with it.

Nope. I'm actually the same way with friends. I don't have any. I've sorta isolated myself from the world. I'm fairly reclusive but I don't have a problem talking to people. I just feel more productive when I'm alone.

Well, the sex part I haven't tried but I have tried socializing and find most people to be incredibly boring. I was super reclusive for about five years and got a job working retail, where I was often complimented on my affability. So, I'm no longer afraid of not being able to communicate with people, and now that I realize what most people are like, I don't feel the desire to do so anyways.
The only thing that bothers me is discovering something new and not having anyone to discuss it with. I feel sorta lonely whenever I laugh at jokes by myself. lol

I actually use to be like that except depression wasn't very often. You sound a little younger than me; I'm in my early twenties and went through a lot of those feelings you're having. You really just have to find something you like and stay focused on that. The things I like just so happened to not involve people, but if the things you like do involve others, then that's how you work through those issues. I don't know how severe your depression is but I've found to be relative to perspective. You have to focus on more than just how you're feeling. Feelings can be tempestuous and misguided. People tend to say "follow your gut," meaning go with how you feel, but some times that isn't the best reasoning. I tend to factor in my intellect and rationale when making decisions.

I'm 22 too. I like all that stuff albeit I quit playing video games about two years ago to pick up new hobbies. I started reading science books and plan on going to college to major in physics or something of the sort. Maybe, that will open new doors?
I honestly use to feel the same way you do about my purpose in life. I was never suicidal but I rationally convinced myself that my life was meaningless enough to not exist. I can't really say what changed other than me just focusing on the things I loved. I noticed how everyone was self centered when it comes to their existence and I just adapted that attitude to fit with how I felt about myself. I got tired of helping people for them just to ignore me or cut off our friendship entirely while pointing fingers back at me. I think that might be why I choose not to have friends now. Well -- it played a role anyways.
I figured if people are going to act that way about themselves, then maybe I should just act that way about myself? So, I ignored others and what they thought and just kept to myself and what I liked.
A good quote is "Those that don't want you to think are never your friends."
Anyways as far as not liking anything, I've sorta been there -- well, to the extent that I felt empty when someone asked me what I liked to do. As if, if I don't like the things they like, then I'm just boring. I've always liked music, films, reading. You already said you liked some stuff, so you can just focus on that? There's nothing wrong with what anyone likes, and for someone to claim what they like makes them somehow better, well then they have to prove that. "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence."

Being a woman it is natural you should be abstinent and pies and not have sex until after you are officially married.
The bible clearly teaches us that women are easily tempted and are of the weaker sex.
The bible also teaches us that god has ordained a place for all men in life and society, a carpenter must always remain a carpenter a farmer equally so, never must they step out of bounds to do so would bring chaos and evil to society.
As with men so it is with women their status in society and life is preordained by god and his holy words, so it is only natural that the woman should be subservient to her husband after all she belong to him as it stated in the law.
Also it is only fair that she can be ousted from society and the village if she is unfaithful to her husband her lord her protector.
After-all this is the 14th century we live in and are we not civilized god fearing men, we do live in those barbaric countries, where women dresses and speaks like harlots and think themselves above their station in life.
Okay lets see how many get the joke and if someone is good at translating stuff it would be fun to get this speech translated into 14th century English.
