    Even as a person who believes in God. I like this guy. He's being truthful and honest and open minded. That's very wise of him to point out a few things that happen to be a little controversial. I guess this man deserves some credit as well as the person who helped him.

      I'm talking about the people who do not care whether there's inconsistencies, like a Christian debate club at my school. "God can contradict himself and still be right because he's God."

    • @hazzrokkuchiha4828
      @hazzrokkuchiha4828 10 лет назад +35

      RandomCanEHdian wow. That's when you ask them why would you worship a being like that? A god that doesn't have to abide by his own laws...then why should we? Of course I would be expecting something along the lines of a response like "because he is god and we can't comprehend his reasons...serve him or you go to hell" ....after that response stand firm with your chest out and say something they can't begin to conceive like "well I am not scared of hell and if god is real he should come face me right now... I am willing to be a sacrifice for skeptics everywhere... Well where is he?" You might have to take extreme measures for people like that...have no fear though as god is and always will be a bitch he won't do a thing... ^_^

    • @RandomCanEHdian
      @RandomCanEHdian 10 лет назад +19

      Nolight Modarkness
      It's very biased, and goes as far as bending factual information, because God.

    • @hazzrokkuchiha4828
      @hazzrokkuchiha4828 10 лет назад +8

      RandomCanEHdian well there is no point debating then.... They are the "ultimate right" and it is impossible for them to be wrong Since they represent god... Smh if they can't or just refuse to have an open mind...you aren't dealing with rational people... People like that would probably not recognize their own god if god appeared in a disguise.."saying I am god" and perform miracles right In front of their eyes... They would belittle him and call him blasphemous Because that man in disguise doesn't match their interpretation of god...yet only god or anything giving credence to their beliefs can influence them... Just quit man you are way ahead of them in mental capacity.. Its not worth the frustrations

    I don't choose to be an Athiest. I just simply don't believe in a god because I don't. It doesn't make sense. I can go through the motions, I can read the book, I can go to church, I can sing the songs, but I can't believe it.

      @East West South Slavs United Atheists arent afraid of death. Religious people believe that they have an afterlife and sure, may not fear death, but we all fear pain, no matter who we are, unless your nervous system is defective when you are born. It has nothing to do with this comment here. What i think alexander means is that despite the overwhelming evidence presented by scientists who work hard instead of following some claim with no backing such as the concept of Heaven and Hell, people hold on to beliefs as they are the ones truly afriad of death, and what comes after.

      elibeth1211 Stop forcing your religion into other people's faces. You could've simply said your opinion, but nooooo. You had to call this person, who believes something different from you, foolish. We understand that you are a follower of Christ. You don't have to tell us that atheism was a foolish decision. What if you're wrong? What if you've been praying to the wrong God this whole time? Out of the millions of Gods in the universe, you chose the Christian God. I believe you haven't even done any research on other religions. You just went with what they gave you as a child, and was brainwashed. I don't mean that in a negative way, but it is technically true for a lot of Christians. I understand your faith and have nothing against it, and I understand your need to spread the word of God, but if this person has a set religion (or lack of one, in this case) then you shouldn't try so hard to convert them. How would you feel if someone of a different faith tried to convert you repeatedly? Exactly. So stop telling every atheist in the comment section that they made the wrong choice. I identify as a Deist, because I believe in the Christian God (which I believe the only reason was because I was taught that from a young age) but do not follow the religion.

  • @brucebaker810

    One thing the religious should stop saying: homosexuality is a "lifestyle". You can be gay from the day you're born. You aren't Baptist from the day you're born. Sexuality isn't a "lifestyle"...RELIGION is a lifestyle.

    • @brucebaker810
      @brucebaker810 9 лет назад +7

      *****. Yes it's possible to "be" gay, but never express it. But the rest of my point was that religion, acquired as it is after birth ( and in ref to your point, I will add, typically "acted upon")... Is a lifestyle. Would you agree? And, a bit deeper, how about someone "being" Christian...just never acting on the "impulses" of the religion? Beliefs without acts?

    • @brucebaker810
      @brucebaker810 9 лет назад +4

      ***** They don't live your definition of the religious lifestyle. You don't live theirs. Funny that. And all by -obsessing over-
      -focusing on and discounting different parts of-
      studying the same book and all.

    • @brucebaker810
      @brucebaker810 9 лет назад +3

      ***** I was pointing out, Alicia, the silliness of saying that its okay to for a gay person to 'be'' gay, just not to 'do' gay. Yet, about the religious person, doing the thing is inextricable from being the thing.
      Certain things may be objectively true. But not one sentence in your bible qualifies. It's the subjective words of men...who claimed objectivity by saying "cuz this all comes from the Invisible Dude Who Invented Everything.
      (...who did it wrong, so he killed a bunch of folks...then tried the same strategy again. And that didn't work, so he killed a bunch of folks and tried the same strategy....etc. but that's the Competence discussion, not the Existence discussion).
      I'll end with this. Gay doesn't lead to deliberately killing people. Not if you're doing it right. But Religion certainly CAN lead to killing people.
      --- The book demands it...but thank -God- goodness most Christians weasel out from most of the murder requirements. And even some of the hate ones. --- In specific ways , for a long list of "offences". Itemized, at great length, then repeated...in your "holy book".

    Here are some things everyone needs to do
    1) Do not shove your beliefs down others' throats
    2) Do not think you are smarter just because you have different beliefs
    3) Believe in yourself before anything
    4) Find your own beliefs
    5) Be respectful towards everyone
    6) Always do the right thing
    7) Do not do something just because it is cool to do

    Sorry, can't agree with the Extraordinary Claims one. They often CAN provide a little bit of evidence (flawed of course) for things such as prayer, and we don't want them to think that's "good enough" for us to take them seriously.
    I do get your point though, but I just think there is nothing wrong with the term. In fact I think it is one of the most thought provoking things you can tell a religious person.

      I agree with EEVblog. Not only can they not provide the requisite extraordinary evidence, they can't even provide the tiniest bit of evidence, so it's just so far below the bar that we can reasonably ignore their claims.

    • @Hesse3
      @Hesse3 10 лет назад +4

      Me neither. There are a lot of things that I would accept based on eye-witness testimony (e.g., there's milk in the fridge). But I would not accept that as evidence for, say, a diamond the size of a basketball or a 6 meters high ape living wild in Hong Kong.
      Someone telling me they're certain that there is milk in the fridge will probably convince me. Someone telling me they're certain that God has spoken to them will probably not convince me. In the first case, their conviction is evidence, because the claim is trivial.

      ziffulmyer ,
      Which "belief" is more rational and logical???
      Two people, one Christian the other Atheist, are walking through an apple orchard coming upon 377 apples "perfectly" in a row and "evenly" spaced apart.
      The atheist concludes "nice accident" and continues walking. Obviously, not thinking anything more about it - as that is how he/she is brainwashed by "secular" society and his/her education to believe.
      On the other hand, the Christian sees the exact same 377 apples "perfectly" in a row and "evenly" spaced apart, and concludes "WHO IN THE WORLD DID THAT?"
      Which has a more rational and logical conclusion???
      Logically, behind "order" is an "orderer". Behind every "building" you see is a "builder" you cannot see.
      Behind something that is "moving" there is a "mover" - that caused it to move.
      Behind an intelligent "design" is a intelligent "designer".
      Now, let’s raise the "accident" odds. For me to write this post I have 3 Billion DNA "perfectly" in a row and "evenly" spaced apart and for you to read this post you have 3 Billion DNA "perfectly" in a row and "evenly" spaced apart, so over 6 Billion DNA working. Now, is that just a random "chance" and "accident" to have 6 Billion DNA in a "row" to carry on this conversation???
      www.genome.gov/25520880/deoxyribonucleic-acid-dna-fact-sheet/
      Is that really a logical and rational conclusion???
      Please get to KNOW the supreme "orderer" of this universe, and what He expects out of your life to find "TRUE LIFE" ITSELF.
      Now, I recommend you watch former atheist Lee Strobel's "Case for the Creator".
      ruclips.net/video/ajqH4y8G0MI/видео.html
      Then listen or read Josh McDowell's "Evidence Demands a Verdict".
      ruclips.net/video/HRemWMIy2IY/видео.html
      Follow the "Evidence", facts and "TRUTH" right into the ONE and ONLY established Church of Jesus Christ being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH.
      May GOD open your eyes and heart guiding you to TRUTH HIMSELF Jesus Christ (John 14:6).

I know a woman who cuts herself off from every atheist in her life because she doesn't want to be tempted to be sinful like them. So it does happen, just not often. Lol
    We'll see how it goes when I "come out" as a non-Christian. I'm still doing research right now but I think I'm probably an atheist or agnostic. But I'm sure no matter what I choose to believe in that if it's not Christian (which it won't be) that they'll think my friends corrupted me 😂😂

    I think #4 is not 100% right. I know many religious people, some of them on TV with huge audiences, who claim that atheists are immoral and that nothing stops us from comitting terrible crimes. Many more go on to say that Hitler, Stalin and other did what they did because they were atheists (and statement that is wrong on many levels). So saying I'm good without God sounds OKto me.

      I agree. I've lost count of how many times fellow students in my high school said atheists are immoral, as well as people I work with whispering roughly the same thing. Sometimes I just want to shout at them that I'm a moral person without god. Of course I've also heard them saying atheists are ruining the country. Sometimes I hate living in the south.

    • @loulabelle5082
      @loulabelle5082 7 лет назад +17

      WarioWareProductions It's not a mean comment. Stop reading between the lines and seeing some intent that is not there. I did not say that Christians are insane. I said I reclaimed MY sanity, which is what it feels like to ME. If I thought Christians were insane I wouldn't imply it I would SAY it. I don't care if someone is offended by something I say, I can not control someones emotions or feelings of offense. I DO care if people are offended by something they think was implied but was not.
      Realising there was no God after years of being pulled by 2 different grandmothers between Catholic and Protestant services felt like I finally gained real perspective. I felt like at last I had come to a real conclusion through logic, common sense and using empiral evidence. It felt like a light had come on. Therefore I felt as though I had gained my sanity after years of believing in something I couldn't see or hear or feel (which to me IS insane).
      I'm a Philosophy grad so I know believing requires a leap of faith even if using "proof" arguments, whether a' priori or a' posteriori. Believing does not make YOU insane but it felt like becoming an atheist finally made me FEEL sane.
      I hope that explains it.

      WarioWareProductions Oh and I have never cared one way or another what anyone believes in. You can believe a big pink invisible banana made the world and that's ok with me. Believers need to stop being so offended if someone says there is no God. Why do you care? If there is a God its His place to deal with non believers not you. I wish there WAS a God and I wish I believed, not least because it would be nice to believe that one day God will resurrect us and rid the world of the wicked and earth will be a paradise. But I just don't.

      Here is my opinion. As soon as I hear these 9 points, the very immediate reaction is that it's not wrong for an atheist to say that. But after I think a little or start hearing the explanation, it strikes me that we should stop saying this. Anyway we will be saying this to theists who are not capable of thinking things out. If they were capable of thinking things out, they wouldn't be theists in the first place. So we need not stop saying these things.

    • @Houndoomgirl77
      @Houndoomgirl77 9 лет назад +3

      you may think that all religions brainwash children but that simply isn't true. Christianity is an example: you can be free and run all you want, u aren't forced, when youre old enough you can do what ya want, you aren't tied down just taught something that you may or may not agree with.
      this comment is like a Christian saying "dont teach children evolution or science till they are 18" same boat. ur taught but you dont gotta agree

    • @TheSunchaserElMalo
      @TheSunchaserElMalo 9 лет назад

      Kind of wrong. Here's why: If an atheist teaches their children religion when they are 18 years old, most of the. 95% will be too mature to believe you. They would of probably already developed critical thinking by then. And if any religious person tells their children of 18+ that there is no evidence for any God, there is a high chance he/she will believe it.

    I hate to be that guy, but I do know some religious people who say that it is impossible for anyone to have any real morality if they are atheist. They also argue that we aren't good people because of our atheism. So trust me when I say this, the most right winged people in this country do infact argue that we as atheist don't have any morals. It is literally something I have to deal with everyday. So to say that "no one says that is we don't have any morality" is just plain wrong. I am accused of having no morality everyday, and thats inside my own family. (Being the only atheist in my family is a real burden sometimes.)

    I was literally tortured when I was young. (I don't mean I was forced to listen to music I didn't like or something silly like that. I mean I was outright tortured.) I actually have PTSD because of it. (Just typing this is making me panic really badly, so I won't go into detail. )
    When I was a Christian, even though I didn't believe in Hell, (annihilationism) I was so afraid if the possibility that Hell exists and that I was actually not going to the right church or doing the right practices, or I would end up dying before I get the chance to confess my sins that I got really obsessive. It was so bad making any mistake made me beg God to forgive me and not torture me. When I was begging for forgiveness, I would degrade myself, even punishing myself hoping it would please God so I didn't go to Hell. I even had strict rituals I followed as to not displease God. For example, I would pray every hour and whenever I felt the need to, I only listened to Christian music because I was afraid listing to secular music would displease God, I would harm myself because I thought my pain pleased God, I did whatever it took to please God that I neglected my own well being. In fact, I was diagnosed with religious OCD.
    Even now, I panic when someone brings up Hell, I punish myself by inflicting pain whenever I do anything wrong, I can't handle any form of criticism, especially any that makes me feel like I'm a terrible person.
    Most people can't imagine being tortured, and eternal torture scares them. Imagine how much the concept of eternal torture scares me, someone who actually experience torture.
    I reject Christianity because I just can't believe a loving God would send people to get tortured because they don't believe. Christians say we all deserve to go to Hell, but I just can't accept that's the punishment we all deserve. I don't think anyone deserves an eternity of extreme pain. In fact, I don't believe anyone even deserves extreme pain for a short amount of time, I don't care what their crimes were.
    When Trump proposed to legalize torture, I couldn't even leave my house I was so afraid that I'll do something wrong and get arrested and tortured.
    If you think anyone deserves torture, especially for eternity, you obviously don't know just how terrible torture is. (Hint: it's far worse than you think.)
    The worse part of being tortured isn't the physical pain, (and that's extremely terrible. It's the psychological pain that follows. I've been able to mostly recover from the physical pain. The psychological pain still affects me to this day.
    Have you ever been in so much pain you outright begged for death? I don't mean just thinking death would be better than what you're feeling at the time, because I'm pretty sure most people experience that. I mean begging to die and desiring to die to the point where you ignore all your instincts. Still don't understand? Imagine your pain is so intense that you outright drink large amounts of harsh chemicals just so the pain would end. That's exactly what happened to me. I drank an entire bottle of lighter fluid and loss conscious.
    Obviously, I didn't die. I woke up in the ICU and found out I was in a coma for 6 months. I never knew how I got to the ICU or even how my body was found. All I know was that my captors were arrested and charged with billions of crimes (slight exaggeration. It was a lot)
    I'm safe now. Can't say I'm a productive member of society, but I'm not in any danger.
    I won't explain exactly how I was tortured because I would end up panicking really badly and fainting. (I know this from first hand experience.)
    Tl;Dr: no one deserves torture. Take it from someone who actually experienced it. Eternal torture is not just, and if that's the punishment for sin, God is not loving.
    You will NEVER convince me that God is loving when he thought it was a good idea to even create Hell in the first place. Even if he doesn't want us to go to Hell, the fact that he created Hell is proof enough he's not loving. Don't even get me started on how I can be saved through faith! I got a lot to say on that subject!

    Unlike religious people, atheists aren't bound by things we should or shouldn't say, it's not like there's a atheist bible with the atheist 10 commandments.
    So it's fine if you don't say those things, but don't expect every atheist to take you very seriously if you expect them to follow it or something.

      +Sm0k4bl3 It's funny how people are so misled by the fact that religious follow rules of the bible. Of course they do, but that's not the reason why they'll only be bound by those. We are all people before being a religious or not, and it has been proven by a research study that people are born good, to make good choices. We are only influenced by the environment as we grow up. So if you think about it, laws are only there to remind us what is good and what is not. And even if religious people follow rules, at the end of the day, we all live in a country where we have to follow rules!

    • @Orion3G
      @Orion3G 9 лет назад +2

      Chris Mentalist The guy in the video gave me the idea he wants others to follow his example like he's the atheïst messiah telling us all how we should act and behave.
      I make my own decisions about what I say or not, I don't need him for that.
      Yeah I know there are rules and laws, doesn't mean some random youtuber can create these laws for me and expect me to take him seriously.

    • @menacedemort2878
      @menacedemort2878 9 лет назад +1

      +Sm0k4bl3 Yeah, I understand what you mean, you won't follow him...
      What I was pointing out is the fact that people think that believers are stupid because they follow rules of a book and don't think by themselves! That's why I mentioned the research study. What I want to say here, and you probably won't agree, is that: the bible doesn't force us to do things, it just reminds us of what is good and not good, because as we grow in the society, this gets blurry. We are all born good, but our environment changes us, and the bible is just a reminder, just like states' laws are. You are free to follow laws or not, you'll just deal with the consequences, good or not.

  • @KrisBlueNZ
    @KrisBlueNZ 10 лет назад +13

    1. "I lost my faith": I agree we shouldn't say that.
    2. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence": I think that's a fair thing to say. True, there's currently no evidence, but if someone DID provide some weak evidence, it wouldn't be convincing. So we WOULD actually expect extraordinary evidence. In any case, that line emphasises the huge gap between the actual evidence and the evidence that would be needed to make a skeptic believe an extraordinary claim. So I disagree on this one.
    In any case, theists generally believe there is plenty of evidence that their god exists. "Just look around you!" Perhaps we need to be more specific about the kind of evidence that is needed - evidence that can't be used to support a competing religion's god, for example.
    3. "Everyone is born an atheist": I agree that "atheist" usually means a person who has thought about it.
    Some atheists, Matt Dillahunty for example, are quite clear that "atheist" simply means someone without god-belief, which would include babies, Buddhists, deists/pantheists, and people who haven't been exposed to any kind of theism, for whatever reason.
    When theists see the word "atheist", they think of Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens or David Silverman - public, outspoken atheists, who might even be called "career atheists".
    I was glad to see tornado survivor Rebecca Vitsmun interviewed by Wolf Blitzer, demonstrating that a sweet housewife can be an atheist too.
    4. "We can be good without god": I'm not sure that "no one ever says that atheists are bad, immoral people". I think theists generally think that atheists are less moral than they are, because we don't believe in their god. Perhaps we should say "We are AS GOOD AS god-believers", or "Statistically, the most atheist societies are the healthiest".
    5. "I trust science, not some 2000-year-old book": I do NOT think that saying that is implying that something special happened 2000 years ago. Parts of the bible were written MORE than 2000 years ago, and some, less, and translations and edits have been made ever since. I think the phrase "bronze-age mythology" is a better one to use though.
    6. "You can't reason someone out of something they were never reasoned into in the first place": I agree with you.
    7. "I don't believe in god": Depends what you mean by "believe in". I do not think that saying that is implying that "god does exist but we're choosing to delude ourselves".
    I agree, it's better to say "I don't accept the claim that [your, or any] god exists" or something like that. I just say "I don't believe that [your] god exists".
    8. "Religion doesn't make any sense": I see your point. I think that when anyone says that something "doesn't make sense", they're saying that it "doesn't make sense TO ME". But I take your point that it's better not to say that, and "illogical", "incoherent", "contradictory", etc are better, although you could argue that they amount to the same thing as "doesn't make sense to me".
    9. "You can't just pick and choose what you want to believe": I think the point of this statement is just to point out inconsistencies. Christians say the bible is the perfect inerrant word of god, but then they eat shellfish, wear clothes made of more than one type of fabric, fail to stone people to death, etc, directly disobeying god's commands as stated in his perfect book. Why is it wrong to point this out?
    Thanks for the video. Plenty of food for thought.

    You must not be talking to the same theists I am. ALL of them that I encounter seem to pull out the "you can't be good without god" argument first thing. Heck, just browse through the comment threads of almost every atheist video out there and I bet you'll find a Christian claiming that atheists are senseless heathens with the moral capacity of beasts in at least half of them.
    Also, I think the "we're all born atheists" argument is more about religious indoctrination than anything else. Many atheists believe that atheism is a default position and are trying to use this as an argument against bringing children up to believe. It's not about including babies in our numbers; it's about making sure they *stay* part of our numbers as adolescents and adults. Or at least most of the times that I've heard the argument.

    1. Lost faith- I agree.
    2. extraordinary evidence- used when theists don't understand that every claim is not equal in believability.
    3. Born atheist- used when theist asserts that everyone knows about their god from birth.
    4. good without god.- used when theist asserts that their god is the moral law giver. (This is still a popular argument among many fundamental theists and most bible literalists). Though "good despite god" could catch on.
    5. 2000 year old book- I agree.
    6. reason- I agree.
    7.I don't believe in god- I agree even though I am guilty of saying that all the time.
    8. Religion doesn't make sense- I agree. (For real and lol)

      1)-2)-5)-6)-8)Agree
      3)Agree with MRuth. I think it initiates discussion that religion is a taught behavior. Usually followed by the examination of how unusual it is that babies end up with the same behavior as their geographical location. Or, I could go with the 1, 3 combo, "I haven't Lost my Faith b/c I wasn't born with any."
      4) Agree with MRuth. -I don't know who HM is knows but his saying that "no one, including conservative christians say that all atheists are bad and immoral", ummm, yes they do. Some really, really believe that. Although I liked his seat-belt reference.
      7)Agree, but. I can say, "I don't believe in Unicorns." and unlike the death penalty reference where we can prove that it exists, there is no proof to the existence of unicorns, etc. Although I agree that changing the way I phrase these sorts of statements is an easy fix to a nit-pick argument. But to say, "I don't believe in the existence of a god/gods" is pretty much the same thing. Wouldn't something more along the lines of, "I don't accept the premise of" be a better phrasing?
      9) Pick and choose/HM"it doesn't give them an out" but I don't want to give them an "out." I want them to hit the brick wall so that possibly, #6 can happen. Although again, I get his point. We need to be more accepting of the small steps.

      The problem is that eyewitness testimony is a form of evidence, even if it's the least reliable, it's the most frequent form used in court. So when a religious person claims to see god or some other heavenly person, their testimony can be entered in as evidence, even if we suspect that they're lying or delusional.

What is the worst thing that can happen if God is real? 3. Do you love anyone?

    • @alondrasp
      @alondrasp 10 лет назад +8

      Joshua Underwood Jesus himself said that the second coming of god was going to happen before his generation was over.... that was over 2000 years ago. Do you think that the first failed doomsayer in recorded history is reaching out to anybody?
      1. What does saying "OMG" matters anyway? The same way that sometimes I say holy s h ! t doesn't mean I'm venerating somebody's feces.
      2. According to the bible, many bad things can happen if god is real. If he doesn't like a few people, he burns down a whole city or floods everything. He will kill your firstborn or give you a painful disease just to prove a point. He is a very malevolent and narcissistic god. Even if there was proof that he was real, maybe I would believe in him, but would still not praise such an insecure and petty deity.
      3. Not believing in Santa Claus doesn't make me not love gifts, not believing in the Easter Bunny doesn't make me not like chocolate, the same way that not believing in an invisible man in the sky doesn't make me incapable of love. That question is none of your business, and irrelevant anyway.

    • @Hyginx
      @Hyginx 10 лет назад +7

      Joshua Underwood First of all, i would like to ask you how you know that you're the one that is sent to warn me? has this deity spoken to you directly,, and even if he did, then why did he not come to me? If he is so powerful to reach beyond space and time to connect to you and supposedly countless others, then why does he ignore some? Any rational mind would come to the conclusion that that it would be illogical to claim that everyone should know your existence but only tell a few people. Secondly, similar to Suny Portalatin said, the use of the phrase "Oh my god" has strayed from the literal meaning to a more metaphorical meaning that could best be described as expressing a state of shock. As for your next point, "what is the worst thing that can happen if god is real?" If a god does exist, and he is the one that you speak of, then i would hope that he would look at all the things i have done in my life and decide that I am a good person. However, I must ask you what if he's not real? Have you wasted your entire life worshiping a nonexistent being? Or even worse, what if you have been worshiping the wrong being. Surly that would be worse than denying his existence. At least when you question the legitimacy of their being, your not saying that some other god is better than them. Moving on to your third and final point, i find it quite offensive that you assume that everyone that doesn't believe what you believe is incapable of certain emotions. Yes i do love someone because I love everyone! Sure i get mad at others at time, but I never truly wish death upon someone. And if your entire bases of love revolves around the existence of a god, then do you truly love someone, or do you have a sort of pseudolove? I would guess that these question are pointless due to the fact that there is no supporting evidence to a deity of any kind, but for the sake of the argument, then please do answer them. I will end this note by recommending that you take a look at his other video of what Christians should not say.

    I wonder what that'd make me. I mean I believe in God sure, but I really have no evidence or proof he exists and therefore cannot back it up in why I believe in him I just do.I believe in a forgiving and loving God, unlike most false prophets these days. I don't need to believe in him, I just do. It was how I was
      raised. I was raised Christian but I gave up the bible and kept my faith in God
      and Jesus. I believe in a God that loves all his creations and when the time
      comes if we ask to go home with him and accept him as he accepts us we will go
      with him and he shall forgive us for any sins we have done.
      That's what Jesus did; all our sins went to him, which is
      why his blood was spilled. Our sins are to be forgiven through his selfless
      sacrifice.
      Now I'm not saying that the only reason I still believe in
      God is because of how I was raised, I still believe in God because knowing that
      helps ease my fear of what comes after death and it helps soothe the ache in
      knowing that there is a place for the loved ones I've lost and for any of my
      pets that have gone. I just don't want to believe they vanished into oblivion
      after they left this earth. I'd like to believe that after I die I will see

  • @Hadgerz

    You say 'faith' but what you really mean is religion.
    Faith is what you invest into something.
    Religion _is_ that something.
    For example, I choose to invest my faith in *logic and reason*. Some choose to put their faith in -The Chronicles of Mr Skybeard- the bible.

    • @beauxq
      @beauxq 10 лет назад +6

      You should not put faith in logic and reason. You should only rely on logic and reason if you see evidence that it works.

    • @tetramirferrand8641
      @tetramirferrand8641 10 лет назад +2

      beauxq Given the amount of hard data and the time it requires to test them, you should definitly put faith in he claims of others in order to live: by now, it would require a thousand lifetimes just to make sure by yourself what about modern day science is true or false...
      If you decide not to check eveything first hand, but trust your sources, you have put some amoun of faith (as in belief that is not confirmed by evidence that you've experienced firsthand) into them, and that's OK. I believe that's what BrEnNo1023 implied.

    • @beauxq
      @beauxq 10 лет назад

      tetramir ferrand I didn't say anything about what's true or false. What's true or false doesn't matter. No one can ever know what's true or false. Even if you had a thousand lifetimes, you still wouldn't be sure.

    • @tetramirferrand8641
      @tetramirferrand8641 10 лет назад

      beauxq Well of course...what I meant is that faith can be applied to non religious matters.
      Depending how you define the word, it can qualifie the trust one has in science or logic.
      It's just choice of words. And saying religious people don't have the monopoly on faith could turn out to be a good thing in a religous argument.

    • @beauxq
      @beauxq 10 лет назад

      tetramir ferrand Faith is not a good thing for anyone in any situation. You shouldn't want any part of it.
      Faith, applied to non-religious situations just means you believe something even when the evidence shows it's wrong.
      If you have faith that there are 6 oranges in the bowl, then even if you count 5, you still believe there are 6.

    I became an Atheist after exploring the Bible. I didn't just read it. I explored it. I contemplated on the ideas and stories it had. His first point about saying, "I lost MY faith," made me think, "It was never MY faith! It was forced upon me from an early and tender age."
    I didn't give up MY faith. I didn't reject MY faith. I rejected and gave up my parent's faith. I rejected my Pastor's faith. This is hard for people to deal with. They are giving up something they were brought up to believe and value. It's a form of brainwashing that I have to constantly fight in myself to try and maintain my rationality.
    When I was eight years old, I had to fight to BELIEVE what they were teaching me, so I valued it even more when I was older.
    I agree that the "cafeteria" christians are a big improvement over the fundamentalists. That being said, I just can't BE one. I hear a sermon based upon all these myths and legends and I think, "When is humanity EVER going to outgrow this stuff?"

      I wish it was that simply but some people just dont know how to let it go or they are just plain disrespectful. There was a guy that felt it was ok to be disrespectful just because I told him I was an atheist and he thought it was a good idea to say that atheists have no morality or they have no moral basis, and started comparing atheists to Mao and Stalin. I'm respectful to christians, except for when they start being disrespectful. That's like if you started generalizing all muslims because of what certain groups have done. Everyone is a human being and should be respected as such.
      Also, that is untrue that atheists are obsessed with talking about christians. Sometimes it's just things (a certain group of) christians do that makes up angry or bothers us. Maybe once these groups stop trying to enforce their ideas on others, atheists will stop giving a damn and they'll have to find someone else to do.

      I went through the same struggle. I felt so frustrated that I couldn't just be myself and I had to pretend to worship something that so obviously was fake. I ended up just gradually hinting at it until it was obvious to my family that I didn't believe any more. Once they confronted me, I didn't lie. I'm gonna be honest, most of my friends and family were accepting. Although my mother was very upset at the time I think she's given up on trying to win me back. I still haven't told my grandmother or most of the more religious side of my family and I think that's for the best. They wouldn't understand and they would only think less of me for it. I think that as long as you don't have to see them very often, just keep up the charade until you're an adult. I've found that adults don't take you seriously until you're out of school. Believe me once you go to college, no one gives a shit and it's amazing. Just keep pulling through. I hope your family was as accepting as mine was.

    You make the bold assertion that there is absolutely no evidence that faith healing works. Wow...that makes you as all-knowing as the God you say you don't believe in, or...you lack the common grace of intellectual integrity. You then go on to put forth the challenge that it a person doesn't have to put forth a high demanding challenge of proof, simply a low one of one single piece of evidence. Well, Mr. Voice of Atheism (are you sure other atheists are happy about you being their representative voice?), my simple evidence is several instances of my own, my wife, and some folks I know, personally. Of course, you would say that my experiences don't count unless I am able to provide corroborating scientific or medical evidence (of course the kind that you would accept as valid). I understand that you don't have to believe it just because I said it here, but I'm not arguing a theoretic religious doctrine. I'm speaking from personal experience. But, then....I've been to this rodeo before. You will likely now say that my experiences are some kind of coincidence. Some perhaps. But many, absolutely not. I would say that one thing that atheists should stop doing is to drop all the extreme hyperbole. You, Atheist's voice cannot prove that there is absolutely no evidence (anywhere implied) that faith healing works. If I were an Atheist, I would ask for my money back for admission to your show.

      -Sicher 1998 showed some improvement, but only 40 patients, so it's statistically not that useful.
      -Mayo clinic 2001 - no effect
      -Leibovici 2001 very minimal effect that fits within random chance.
      -MANTRA study 2005 - No effect
      -STEP project 2006 - No effect when double-blind, actually showed that it may be bad for you if you're prayed for and know it (performance anxiety).
      Known errors, frauds and controversy:
      -Byrd and Harris 1998 and 1999. Type I errors / sharpshooter fallacy.
      -IVF-ET prayer scandal 2001 - financial fraud.
      -O'Laoire 1997 - positive effects shown. Controversy. Original article claims benefits, "Psychological Perspectives on Prayer" claims no effects.

That's how you interpreted a 2001 study and that only deals with one field of illness. Cancer. Did you have someone die of cancer and are pissed off that they died? I'm not trying to be insensitive because that would be horrible. But, what is emotionally driving you to disprove God or healing?

    • @gnagyusa
      @gnagyusa 10 лет назад +6

      Gary Ellis "But, you still are discounting my personal experience and insisting as valid your impossible standards of proof that corroborates the idea of nobody anywhere?"
      No. What I'm saying is that a positive personal experience (hit) is statistically useless without the context of the corresponding misses.
      Sure, there may not be an perfect way to collect ALL the data, but we should strive to be accurate.
      I'm in computer science and deal with a lot of practical probability situations on a daily basis (numerical integrals of non-linear multi-dimensional functions with extreme low-probability/high-contribution events etc).
      You'd be surprised how easily humans get fooled, as a lot of statistics is not intuitive because we didn't evolve to deal with it.
      Quantum mechanics is unintuitive for most people, we didn't evolve to deal with it, but without it, we wouldn't have the computers to have this discussion.
      Don't get me wrong. I'd like to believe in these faith healing etc, I'm just not willing to compromise.
      I mean, if we lower our standards for evidence, where do we draw the line? Alien abductions, Yeti, Homeopathy?
      This is getting to hypothetical without knowing the exact details, but of course, you don't have to disclose them here.

    I totally disagree with the part about "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" When you say faith healing has no evidence, you are wrong. It has some evidence, just not any good evidence. What evidence does it have? Anecdotal of course. And anecdotal evidence is poor evidence. But it is not zero evidence. And, in fact, we accept anecdotal evidence every day. If I told you I walked to the store today, that is anecdotal evidence, and yet you would probably believe me. But if I said I flapped my arms and flew to the store, you probably would not believe me, even though I offered you the same amount of evidence for both claims. Why? Because *extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence*, that is why!

    • @XPSChaos
      @XPSChaos 10 лет назад +3

      In science anecdotal "evidence" isn't accepted as evidence. So they still have absolutely no evidence to support their claim. The reason someone might not call you out on going to the store is because there is no reason for them to do so but once they do call you out on it saying "well I did do it" simply isn't enough. It wouldn't be considered evidence then either.

    • @CaseAgainstFaith1
      @CaseAgainstFaith1 10 лет назад +3

      Ouro
      The reason anecdotal evidence isn't accepted in science is because it is not *good* evidence. It is not *no* evidence. And you are completely correct that different circumstances call for different levels of evidence. And where anecdotal evidence might be sufficient in some circumstances, it is not in other circumstances. In short, someone saying something happened is *of course* some evidence that it happened. Testimony is by definition some evidence.

    • @XPSChaos
      @XPSChaos 10 лет назад +2

      I would consider anecdotes information and not evidence. Once that information is shown to be accurate then it could be considered evidence for something but until then it is just a claim, an assertion with no ability to prove anything since it has yet to be verified. I'm not too big on arguing semantics so I'll just say this, science doesn't operate on bad evidence therefore there is no reason to accept any religious statement on bad evidence. We scrutinize all ideas just the same and without bias. So regardless of if you consider it evidence or not it still wouldn't meet the basic standards that we require in science.

    • @CaseAgainstFaith1
      @CaseAgainstFaith1 10 лет назад +4

      Ouro
      Well, for one, there are "hard sciences" and "soft sciences". History, for example is a "soft science". And in history, there are lower standards of evidence, and people's testimony is often what is given as sufficient evidence of an event -- so long as the event is otherwise reasonably probable.
      Did you know that in Texas, you can be convicted of a crime based on purely one person's testimony? I was on a prospective jury panel. The prosecutor told us some basics about the case. It was a mugging. The prosecutor told us that the primary evidence is the testimony of the victim. And that on Texas law, if you believe the testimony of one person, that is by itself sufficient to convict. That seems wrong to me, your word against mine. But, that is what the prosecutor said.
      Theists will often conflate different standards of evidence. And that different circumstances call for different standards. And of course hard sciences will not accept simple testimony. So theists will try to say they are using the standards of evidence of history and law. Of course they are not, they don't understand how to apply the different standards.
      But, I think it is NOT helpful for us to basically do the same thing -- to not understand that there are different kinds and standards of evidence and that the different standards are applicable in different situations. Thus to say "no evidence" when people's testimony is clearly evidence is incorrect and not helpful.

      Chuck Mick morality does not exist, its a construct made by society to keep order. its a good idea but creates problems over time. hope is a word i use to describe leaving it up to chance. one tends to hope when a situation its out of their control. also common sense does not work in science. for example non newtonian liquids don't make common sense, and in math .999999= 1, it does not make common sense but it is true. faith is what people use to explain phenomenon without any proof. im sure real scientist dont claim it popped up out of nowhere, we don't know how but i'm sure over time we might figure it out, lack of evidence is not a good reason to substitute faith.

    1) Ask why aren’t they Mormon? They believe everything Rick Warren does plus some extra stuff. Great reply when they throw out Pascal’s wager.
    2) Do they care if their god is moral? Point them to Exodus 21, and ask them about slavery and owning a human.
    3) Do they care that the Bible is errant? Ask them how Judas died exactly according to the holy book.
    4) Do they care if what they believe is true? If so, how do they know beyond a feeling? I can believe that a girl I just met wants to marry me based on a feeling but without evidence my proposal would be crazy.
    5) Do they care that none of the 4 gospel books were eye witnesses nor were they written in the name sakes language?
    6) Do they care that prayer doesn’t work? Site the Pubmed references
    I could go on but this stuff is poison to a Christian that is questioning

You would get no such statement under the doctrines of fundamentalism, and thus we can conclude that (although it is possible to twist his words to fundamentalism) , Dawkins is not proposing that in the slightest.

    I think I may have accidentally proven that the Christian/Jewish/Muslim versions of God do not exist mathematically. All three of these versions define God in part as a being of infinite power who created the Earth. But it just occurred to me to ask, "How easy would it be for a being of infinite power to create something finite, like the Earth?" The answer to that would be that it would be too easy, literally, meaning that he couldn't do it because it was too easy.
    The reason is this: If someone's power is infinite, then what percentage of that power would be needed to create something finite? And the answer is simply: Too small. Even 0.000001% of infinity is still infinity when you look at infinity mathematically.
    So even if we ignored the fact that creating something of infinite energy would instantly create a black hole so dense that everything in the universe would already be inside of it, what would be created could only have an infinite value of energy. The Earth is big, but still finite, and to create a finite amount from an infinite power would require an infinitesimal amount of effort.
    Now, you could go on to say that God is infinitely subtle, since he would have to be in order to make something that is not infinite, but if God was infinitely subtle, he could use as much power as he wanted, and he still would not be able to make anything occur.
    I think an easier way to visualize this is to think back to the lunar landing. When the first astronauts were being trained to walk on the moon in a low gravity simulator, they had to retrain their muscles to be more subtle to compensate for the lower gravity, since using their normal amount of power for a step made their leg just go up and up and they couldn't complete the step. Now, if they had an infinite amount of power, then it wouldn't matter how subtle they were trying to be, they wouldn't even be able to complete one single step.
    And there you have it. Mathematical proof that the Christian/Jewish/Muslim versions of God are not real.

    *On point number 6:*
    I tend to say there's no point in trying to use rationality to prove a point to someone who believes in things that require them to reject rationality.
    Religious person: There IS a god.
    Me: Why do you think that?
    Religious person: Because the bible says so.
    Me: Why do you believe what it says in the bible?
    Religious person: Because it's the word of god.
    Me: How do you know it's the word of god and not just propaganda?
    Religious person: Because it says so in the bible.
    I could go into the psychological tendencies we have as human beings that can give rise to these type is silly beliefs. I could demand proof. But if they can't find an answer off the top of their head, they tend to just discredit me by saying something like "..well, you are ugly" or "you will burn in Hell".

      Great description of religion's circular arguments.
      My favorite summary of religion is:
      When encountering the unknown:
      A scientist will say: "I don't know. Let's investigate and learn / find it out.".
      A religious person will say: "I don't know. Let's make shit up."
      ("God of the gaps").
      A scientist will also adjust his/her view in light of new evidence, which I can respect.
      A religious person will stubbornly try to defend his/her "shit" for centuries, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
      This gets to a point of desperate and ridiculous.
      At first, gods lived on the tops of mountains (Zeus etc.). Then, we went up there and didn't find any gods.
      Then religions said: "well, actually God is in the sky. Yeah, that's what we meant.".
      Then we built airplanes and spaceships and realized that the sky is just the light scattering around Earth's atmosphere and there are no gods there either.
      So, now religions claim that God is this outside of time and space being.
      Does anyone not see a pattern here?

    I have a great #10... Stop using the word "atheist"
    In just the same way that we don't use the word aleprechaunist to describe the people who do not believe in Leprechauns, we should not need the word atheist. We should be able to say, "I am a normal person" and be done with it.
    The problem is that, in America today, if you say, "I am a normal person," what everyone assumes is that you mean, "I am a Christian." Currently we are a minority, and as long as we are a minority we need a name.
    It is time to choose a new name for those of us who know that all human gods are imaginary. There are two good reasons for picking a new name. First, the word atheist is overloaded with extraneous meaning right now, most of it negative. Second, there is no reason to define ourselves as the opposite of theists because theists are delusional. The word "atheist" gives theists way too much credit. The new name that I would like to propose is Rational Person.

    • @TermsOfProduction
      @TermsOfProduction 10 лет назад

      You're not rational because you think my God does not exist. No, I can't prove to you that He exists but you can't prove to me that He doesn't. Also, atheism is not a minority. Its a helluva lot bigger than Christianity, but don't think that automatically means its right.

      Ioncehad60000views It is time for Americans, both religious and non, to openly discuss the evidence showing that God is imaginary. Let's stop hiding the discussion, or attacking it. Let's talk openly. Let's have an honest, open, rational, civil conversation about all of the evidence we have seen. If we have that debate in an open forum, the majority of us will reach agreement that God is imaginary.

      You still have faith... that God doesn't exist.
      Until an atheist can prove that ALL of life can arise mindlessly and purposelessly from non-living matter, you will continue to depend on your faith, that God doesn't exist.
      I don't have enough faith to be an atheist.

      Who gave a flying sh1t about faith? Why are you even replying to my comment?

      Darwins Myth *siiiiiiigh* you assume I really give a damn whether or not god, or "gods" for that matter, exist. I don't. atheism is simply a disbelief in any and all deities. the reasons for this may vary widely. So believe it or not it is possible, and in fact likely, to be an atheist for logical reasons, zero faith required.
      We cannot know everything, nor do we need to, I for one disbelieve in god because he is simply the least logical possibility that I have been presented with by far. If evidence for his/her/it's existence were to be presented then I would step back and reassess the situation. I have never had to, nor do I ever expect to have to, as religious groups have been nothing if not consistent in their failure to present evidence. good day.

    Christian rules to athiests
    (I’ve had it with disrespectful Christians, they make us look like rlly bad people)
    1. Don’t treat athiests wrong.
    2. Don’t force religion into others.
    3. Don’t hurt athiests.
    4. Don’t be mean to athiests.
    5. Respect atheists.
    6. Don’t think you are better than them just because of your religion.
    7. That’s basically it.
    And for athiests, pls listen. I’ve had a bad taste in my mouth with CERTAIN athiests, (not all) and it’s ruining your reputation.. I really don’t want athiests to be perceived as mean people who hate cristians, so please, Atleast, try to AVOID THESE THINGS!
    Avoid:
    1. Disproving ones belief
    2. Being rude to one another for one’s belief
    3. Hating someone for believing something
    4. Saying things like “Well why doesn’t God help the sick children?” That really hurts us. We would provide an Atleast acceptable answer, but most of the time you don’t respond. We rather avoid the whole question entirely...
    That’s it! Thank you athiests for being so kind and reading this!
