    I think I was mentally prepared to understand evolution when it was taught to me in school because I spent most of my childhood reading about dinosaurs, how they went extinct 65 million years ago and seeing diagrams of that time period. When I later heard in History class that some Christian had calculated the origin of the earth at only 6.000 years ago, I outright started laughing.

      Lord Baktor Calculated based on a book. Not from fossils, stones or even by inventing new method of measuring half-life that will give the answer of 10,000.

      Ratta Toilete My brain is unable to derive any new information from what you said. Don't know if you are agreeing or disagreeing. Don't know if it's a recipe for a food dish. What I'm trying to say is: Please rephrase, clarify and/or explain whatever it was you were trying to convey...

    • @BaronVonQuiply
      @BaronVonQuiply 9 лет назад +43

      Lord Baktor I can translate. Ratta was saying that the christians had "calculated" the age of the earth by adding up laughable ages in a book of 900 year old men rather than doing physics and mathematical calculations because those are hard and disagree with the bible.

    • @LordBaktor

      Baron von Quiply Ok, I get what he was trying to say now. I think he's emphasizing the least relevant part of my original post, that got me confused.

    It's basically this ecuation "If I don't understand X, it must be supernatural."

    • @ada7180
      @ada7180 8 лет назад +13

      "If A, then B" is a statement, not an equation, and even less so an ecuation.

    • @davidgafo
      @davidgafo 8 лет назад +12

      Ok:) But it's the way a lot of christians and muslims see the world

    • @ada7180
      @ada7180 8 лет назад +1

      And what is your way of seeing the world and why do you think it is the correct way?

    • @davidgafo

      I think that if we don't understand something, we should try to get the answer using science, not making up a stupid fairy tale.

      +Rey hmm so you can only make conclusions about science if you are there and can test it at that point. So history, archaeology, astronomy, geology, nuclear physics, cosmology etc are a waste of time? Or can we make conclusions from the evidence left behind. If you are philosophical about it ALL evidence is in the past. Some light takes billions of years to reach your retina some takes milliseconds, but none of it is instantaneous. Its the quality of evidence that matters not its age.

    Just wanted to thank you, Hemant, for making these videos. As a lifelong devoted Christian on track to becoming a pastor, it was when I was watching one of your videos that I finally realized and accepted that I was no longer a theist. You helped me jump over a great hurdle, and I will be full of gratitude for the rest of my life.

      @chantellg4521 8 лет назад +9

      @Jacob7393 8 лет назад +93

      +Chantell G, I no longer believe in God because I realized that all of my beliefs were stacked on top of other beliefs: assumptions based on assumptions, ad infinitum. I thought, "well, it's ok if I have assumptions, as long as they're rooted in something solid and true." This is a very fair stance, I think. So I went looking for this solid and true foundation, only to realize that there was none. My spiritual experiences? My mind playing tricks on me because of the power of suggestion and desperation. My belief in the effectiveness of prayer? Selective memory/Sharpshooter Fallacy. The inerrancy of the Bible? Tarnished. The life, teachings, and resurrection of Jesus? Read any of Bart Ehrman's books and you will realize that the massive body of evidence indicating how manufactured and inconsistent it all is is overwhelming.
      In short, the reason I no longer believe in God is because, after exposing myself to unbridled truth and evidence regarding the Bible and the belief in the supernatural, I simply was no longer convinced. I didn't choose it -- it was simply the natural result of open, objective inquiry and intellectual honesty. I was/am no longer able to subscribe to a "God of the gaps" philosophy because of how dishonest it all is.
      Since my change, I have been immensely happier and more fulfilled. I have a drive to accomplish my goals and a confidence that I have never had before. I feel more moral because I have had to discover morality for morality's sake as opposed to imposed morality out of fear of disappointing a god.
      I remember praying in tears saying, "God, I won't let me comfort be an idol in my life. I will follow the truth *wherever* it leads me, no matter what." And that's exactly what happened. And now, in a more significant way than ever before, I've truly been born again.

      OKY you have made youre choice its really sad thouh that the devil could do that but the reason youre appiere is because youre focus isint on God anymore so the devil doesnt seem to have any intrests in you because he alreydy won so why would he try to bring you down ...he won so he is leaving you alone because he doenst need to worrie because you dont believe in God anymore .....but yess you made youre choice but oneday you wil be given another choice again a second change i hope that you will make the right choice .......im not being mean or anything because i only show love to people ....im just saying what i feel ....but yehh mahn i hope you enjoy youre life ...love u all ..may Godbless

    • @Jacob7393
      @Jacob7393 8 лет назад +64

      Chantell G Belief or disbelief in God is not a choice. You are either convinced of something or you are not. I obtained deeper knowledge about the Bible and spirituality, and it left me no longer believing. If you think that belief is a choice, I encourage you to earnestly try believing that, buried underneath the foundation of your house, there is a stockpile of diamonds and rare metals. You see, there's no way you can consciously choose to believe this because you are simply not convinced. Also, your reasoning about the Devil not bothering me anymore because "he's already won" in me is just ad hoc stuff you made up. What objective analysis led you to this conclusion, and how is it that you have access to the internal thoughts and intentions of a divine being such as Satan?

      If I was forced to have a faith, I'd choose Buddhism. He taught people the real practical things, like: "My teachings, you must examine." And that "I am not a deity, I am just a human like you, I have no power to help or hurt you. but if you do what I myself did, you should become a Buddha like me." Albert Einstein: "Buddhism is the only religion that adapt to modern science."

    When I talk to a Creationist about evolution, I sidestep the god issue. I point out that evolution doesn't preclude a god, it just doesn't require one. I point to the many god-believers that accept evolution so that they can at least feel comfortable with the topic. At least if I can get them to stop being a science denialist, I'm happy. We can deal with the god issue after that.

    Reason number 1: most people are intellectually lazy and/or incompetent. Reason number 2: the psychological and emotional need to believe (fear of death, pain and injustice/chaos). Reason number 3: indoctrination from a very young age. Reason number 4: group think or social pressure. Reason number 5: a serious failure of the educational system. Reason number 6: for many people religion is essential to their identity and relationships to others, science doesn't offer comfort and a sense of belonging. Good video.

      @lessur dgreat evolution actually has proof? Lots of it? Evolution is not just a theory, it's a fact. But every thing in science is called a theory because science is constantly evolving and growing and learning. Theories are conclusions made off of irrefutable facts.

    • @sygtymatory6667
      @sygtymatory6667 3 года назад

      @lessur dgreat A scientific theory is a schems, that explains why the things are like they are (ALL the things that have been proven true, like dinausors for instance). If we do find little things the theory doesn't explain, or wrongly, we change it (and it has happend). Thus, we can never say that it's the truth, because we need to accept that we may have been wrong, so we use the terme believe but that doesn't mean we don't have proof that what we say is true, when we have many that what the creasionists say is false. And futhermore, humans aren't the only ones to hav feeling, and cousciousness is hard to define, so, there is still a debate about animal consciousness, but the basis of what we call consciousness have benn found in mammals and birds. And what do you mean by a fine tuned universe, a stable one? Because it isn't, it's a metastable one, its enthalpy is forever growing until no energy (which is, be defenition, chaos) can be found.

    Luckily in my country, such thing as "believing in evolution" doesn't exist. We just KNOW the process of evolution, we are taught the theories of how animals developed over time and creationism isn't even mentioned as a "theory", cuz honestly, it's a joke. We all know it can't be possible. What we accept, and Christians here also agree, is that the Genesis from the Bible was meant in a metaphoric way. It shocks me that at my 27 years I realized a vast percentage from the USA actually believes the world was created in 7 days 10000 years ago... Like... Can you even think by your own??

      RUSSIAN ROBOT No one can prove whether or not there is a god, that's true. But atheism isn't nonsense. What makes your God more likely that Zeus? And how does a supernatural, omniscient being sound no more nonsense than the lack thereof? Furthermore, many religious people make nonsensical claims that we can PROVE to be incorrect. The earth is ten thousand years old? The why dose have ice cores with millions of labors, and why have we dated rocks to be older than that. Noah brought 2 of every animal on his ark and landed in Arabia? The animals would need to have migrated, so where are the fossils of the animals along the migration path? You say that God is truth, well where's your proof?

      Simple! Because the people who believe in the silly story are trying to get it forced into science classrooms. And trying to get their silly outdated "morals" put into our laws. So yeah, that's what the fuss is all about but you are right, there IS no argument when it comes to evolution and creation. If there is a creator, it used evolution to diversity life on Earth over billions of years.

    Your video was overall positive in laying out some reasons why people may not accept evolution, however from my experience you did not include what I believe to be the biggest reason.. because it just doesn't matter.
    Sometimes it's hard for science enthusiasts to understand that for a great majority of people, scientific details are completely unimportant, and to some possibly uninteresting.
    Sure, when they go to the doctor, they will want the doctor to know about evolution and be up on the latest medical science, but when it comes to their daily lives working at walmart, or mom and pops shop down the road, these scientific details are just not worth their time, and makes no large difference whether they accept or do not accept evolution in their view, and I can understand that.

      Jonah Schimpf I believe he meant that it doesn't matter in their everyday routine, and most people in this world are stuck in their everyday routines just to keep their head above the water. So if you add that to the reason that I believe religion has taken hold (fear of death), it kinda gives you an overall package that if you accept it blindly, you could focus on trying to feed your family while "knowing" that you will be rewarded afterwards, so it's okay if you're not happy right now.
      Of course, this is all _wishful thinking_ (coupled with stress of survival) until some evidence comes forth to support it, and I wish (oh how I wish) that everybody would be interested in finding out what's really true out there, instead of being content with just wishing how things ought to be (to solely pleasure us).
      Because if you eventually do find out what is _really_ true (and I'd argue that we're not there yet at all), then you can take actions based on reality to further change things to suit your well-being.

    Hello Hemant and Happy Holidays to you. I am grateful and with great appreciation and respect for you, having taken the time to convey the ongoing videos you have put together, for the benefit of our societies mental and spiritual growth and well being. I feel, one of the main things we need to do, in order to survive as a species, is to evolve in our understanding of life, by realizing our connection to everything. Which means, our need to question our current religious beliefs and our global understanding of "God" or "Higher Power". With the ongoing wars between the "Abrahamic Religions"(Jewish, Christian and Muslim) over the last thousand plus years, it's time we, as a people, seriously question the integrity of our belief systems, because our stubborn ignorance and arrogance, puts all our lives and the quality of life, AT RISK! So, I thank you and ask that you continue and fine tune your venture, so that it helps our people grow in better harmony with each other and the rest of life, in all its forms.

Why am I the one assumed to have crazy beliefs when there are mounds of evidence and facts supporting evolution, yet not a shred of evidence outside the bible for things like 10 plagues of Egypt, a creation myth that includes light created before the sun was made, or a world flood that covered even the tallest mountain on Earth? How am I supposedly worthy of mockery when I have to listen to all this BS whenever I visit my family? Anyway, I keep my mouth shut, I try to be respectful, but I really hate it. ***** I'm not visiting those websites ever again. They are paid for by creationists. They're too biased, and they deny everything biology is about. Realize that if you deny evolution you deny genetics and most medical knowledge we know to be true. Your arguments aren't even your own; they are practically copy/paste answers from these christian websites. Think for yourself, learn from people that aren't paid by religious funding. Challenge yourself a little. Because it's clear that you don't understand what you're talking about. Try a little. Be brave and just try to learn something that isn't necessarily in the bible. Learn a little something other than myth. Science is all about challenging preconceived notions with rational, unbiased tests. You don't start with the bible and try to manufacture a truth that fits... that isn't science. Science doesn't start with the answers a researcher wants the way Answers in Genesis does. It's backward and that's not how actual science is done. Real science is braver than that.

      They are just playing you and give you miss information.
      I will not debunk all of the miss information that those anti-sicence told you, but I will explain this one, you might stop drinking the cool-aid.
      This is an oversimplified example, but I hope it helps
      Positive mutation is any mutation that is beneficial for an individual in a certain environment.
      The increase in size of the genetic material comes from from chromosomal duplicates. This means that we have many version of very similar chromosomes, that originated from an original chromosome that was duplicated.
      The complexity per say increases when a gene is mutated because it becomes more different than the others gene that originated from the same chromosome.
      A good analogy are cuisines. When you create a new recipe most of the times you first copy a recipe that you like and over time you change it. Therefore cuisines changes over time.
      You modify your recipe by trial and error. You try different things, most of them do not work, but when one works and improves the recipe you will always use that.
      It is important to notice that yes, you loose the old recipe (assuming that you will alway cook using that alteration). And if everyone does that, the original recipe will be lost. Nevertheless, the cuisine just got more complex because the new recipes are more diverse than originally.

    I've always thought consciousness was a result of language as much as intellect. As we learn to relate words with ideas we can begin draw much more amazing and elaborate pictures in our heads. A baby is said to most likely see the world in the form of pictures, but once you add language, and those pictures can be twisted and redrawn you can see and think so much more. Over time I always imagined that language played a rather important role in our ability to self reflect and be self aware. I can't back that up, I don't know how, but I always thought it since I was young.

    The reason that people discard the idea of evolution is because they take the book of Genesis literally. Well Genesis 1:6-8 literally says that outer space is filled with water and Earth is surrounded by a water-proof firmament barrier. Okay, creationists, prove the positive. Prove that outer space is chock full of water as opposed to being empty space, like the Bible says it is.

I think that the Church has done so much to let us believe in it, how they've laid out a plan for what you should do for them your whole life. But I still cannot find any true reason as to why it makes any sense. And when I ask people about it, they just point to their personal belief or tell me to believe in God, but it makes literally no sense. So it is also not a surprise to find similarities of adaption when you create cities or countries in the games based on real life cities to find animals (or there pokemon) based on selected animals in the first place, which are living in the same regions. ;-)

      Obviously this will depend on both your definitions of religion and what would constitute a 'contradiction,' but on a basic level you can see a clear (and in my opinion, causal) link, with countries containing self-proclaimed religious people having a low uptake of evolution (polarised further if limited to a strictly non-theistic evolution) contrasted with countries with wider spread atheism and the relevant affect on its education system, showing far higher acceptance of evolution.

      ***** I think you are connecting two seperate premises that are not necessarily related: the mutual exclusivity of God and evolution vs. religion and evolution. If there is a single being that ultimately created our world (or more likely, the mechanisms which allow our world to function and grow), it is possible that this being is not connected to any religion and its nature is poorly understood. Or more simply, perhaps God is real and all religions are fairy tales. Personally I think it more likely that if the mechanisms governing evolution were created, it was a collaborative effort by many beings.

    There must be some malicious motif behind this strategy which consciously tries to push kids back into ignorance by jeopardizing the school system and pulling a foggy shroud over scientific achievements.
    I am curious: are there schools in the US where they are questioning whether the Earth is round?

    "A wise person does not need the promise of heaven to see the benefits of being good." A quote I heard somewhere... In my opinion, the social bindings should be based on how others feel, not on what you believe. By making others feel good, you feel good. To kill someone based on color, class, gender, sexuality or whether they have a disability is wrong, because it hurts them and others. Part of that is herd instincts, passed down by genetics. We're stronger together than alone. We should all remember that. Religion tears humanity apart. Wars were waged in the name of many religions (I'm looking at you, Christians). Only an open mind and an open heart can bring us together.

    • @primarysecondaryxd
      @primarysecondaryxd 10 лет назад

      to be clear i'm not "siding" here. But wars aren't caused by religious people and leaders, at least, it's not war's sole cause. From the beginning of humanity, even before we existed, even during our pre-human ancestor's time, wars have been there. Wars come with intelligent life, it's as simple as that. There is no place without war, that has a form of intelligent life (at least human intelligence). Of course, there are "good" people, but there is always at least one person who will destroy the "good" and yet, as the "good" try to defeat them, the "good" basically turn "evil" in doing so. If you think about it, when America bombed Japan, we bombed them in one of the most densely populated places in Japan, not only that, it was a nuclear bomb, effectively made by the entire population, mass genocide, and the criminal, is all of America (this is only an example). Theres also the fact that from Japans perspective, they were good, and America, Britain, etc. were all evil.

      Dominic Donahue War is caused by greed and fueled by beliefs. Religions unite people, and if you manipulate them specifically, you have an army "in the name of god"

I do, however, believe that Jesus did exist. There is archaeological evidence of his existence, so there's no doubt in my mind that he existed. I believe that at least some of what he taught was nothing short of brilliant. Forgiveness, open-mindedness and generosity are important values.

    • @Skystarry75
      @Skystarry75 10 лет назад

      ***** To be united, you do not need to believe the same things. You just need to agree on something. Religion grew out of our proximity to others, and the necessity to get along. We're stronger together after all. But now we live in a world where there are many, many religions, many at odds with each other, and we will run into people of these religions on a regular basis. We need to be united on a global scale, but these religions are now keeping us apart. Religion did some good. It helped up to accept the world we live in and ask the big questions, out of which science has grown. It's not completely bad (rarely anything is) but there are flaws, and it's becoming slowly irrelevant.

      Philosophically that is true. In reality the word cousin refers to someone with the same grandparents. We stretch that sometimes to include 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th cousins. Beyond that is really a stretch, but it is done.
      Animals and plants split billions of years ago. Who can say why some microbes preferred sunlight and others learned to "eat".
      Cacti are an excellent example of evolution. They were plants growing in a sea and the sea starts drying up. Those plants that could evolve to make use of dry land survived. Lots of deserts have cacti, but the plants are different from one another. They probably evolved from the same type of plant that was able to survive their environment drying up.
      Some deserts, while obviously being old sea beds, did not produce cacti. No plant resembling a cactus developed in those areas.

    I think one other point that wasn't mentioned but does tie in with the "everyone has a soul" reason is that some people are in denial that we only have this one life & that we become nothing but rotting flesh once we die. They refuse to believe that any loved ones that they had and eventually themselves will likely have no consciousness or "peace" (in the tradition sense of the word) after death. As a former believer, I completely understand why it would be hard for some to accept that there is no heaven as truth. Especially when people are always saying things like "I'm sure he/she is in a better place" or "May he/she rest in peace" or "He/She will be looking over you or will always be with you" after the death of a loved one. I think if more people accepted logic, science & actual facts rather than what they've been taught to believe from the Bible or other religions....they would live out their one and only life more fully.

    Why is atheism given loop holes, but the same isn't given to creationism. Does atheism or evolution have an consensus on the Origin of Life or even the Origin of All things. They claim that evolution is true but takes billions of years. That seems like an easy hand to play because you have NO way to observe that or to repeat it to say if that's true.

    • @bebopjelli2
      @bebopjelli2 10 лет назад

      evolution takes more time the more complex the organism, and so smaller organisms, like bacteria, can be observed evolving and adapting. chemists to my knowledge see this often with bacteria they grow for proteins that eventually become resistant or even immune to methods of killing it off when it loses its use.

    • @BSmitty4rm8Fitty
      @BSmitty4rm8Fitty 10 лет назад

      bebopjelli2 I can understand that with bacteria. But speaking only on humans, we cannot observe evolution due to the "long process" To say we can do it because another species can does seem valid to me. I just don't think that atheist expect creationism to explain every detail and to conform to every structural aspect of science when evolution can even be tested with humans nor observed.

      Josh Haws There are NO fossils and there are NO DNA records that directly relate us to primates. We have similar attributes but there is no direct correlation between them and us. Evolution is a thought process that tries tying it in all together. Without the links validating a DIRECT relation to primates, its just another worldview and not that final answer that atheist seem to often portray. Even IF that were the case, Evolution and/or Atheist still have no explanation of the origin of matter, life, or even time. Creationist at least have that rational to believe that something greater than what we see had created the things we see. Why? Because we observe that same process of creation here on earth. Babies come from parents, plants from seeds, etc. To say emphatically that NOTHING created this universe which is set on a self sustaining yet temperate operating system is not rational and that is the essence of the insanity of atheism. Most atheist claim an intellectual high ground in regards to Science but somehow throw the rules of of the window when it comes to the origin of all things. Someone with a rational state of mind would be agnostic at best. We say a higher being created the universe (God) because we see how reproduction of matter works here on earth. Atheist say that nothing created something but where did they observe that in nature?

      This whole stuff is pretty... confusing :)

    The main reason I rejected evolution for a long time was because it was basically (indirectly) teaching me I'm unlovable. While it didn't outright say I'm unlovable, it explains how certain traits are desirable over others, and sexual organisms with desirable traits were far more likely to pass on their genes, basically saying there are specific traits people are attracted to. I have 0 of those traits. I'm short, I'm weak, I'm mentally ill, I'm unintelligent, I'm socially inept, I have a very small penis, I have a receding chin, etc. the only positive trait I have is my extremely high pain tolerance, but even then, it's far more useful for party tricks than finding a potential mate. Evolution also seems to imply that our sole purpose is to reproduce, and since no one can love me, because loving me would go against natural selection, I will never pass on my genes. Basically, evolution made me feel completely useless. I admit, it's better than Christianity that made me believe I was an evil person who deserved eternal suffering no matter what I did. It's better to feel useless than someone who deserves to suffer solely because they were born.
    I believe in evolution, and I sincerely believe I'm useless. Not just useless in the Atheistic sense where everyone is useless. In 100 years, the vast majority of us will not matter. No one will know who we are, and any legacy we left on the Earth won't matter. I mean i don't even make a difference. I can't work, I'm unlovable, I don't have very many friends, I have nothing to give.
    Before you all give me a list of people with my traits that were able to find love and have children, without seeing the list, I can name something else that all have in common. They are all very financially successful. If you have enough money, it can override all your negative traits. Why do you think Donald Trump has children?

    In the mind of a Christian your great-uncle may develop dementia and hardly remember his family or sometimes even gets lost on the way home... But somehow after death the 'soul' you meet in 'heaven' has perfect memory of everything in life.

      ***** Bats can see... they've got eyes but they are not necessary anymore so their eyes are slowly vanishing, from Generation to generation, and will become very bad while their sonar improves. it fit's evolution perfectly and is what you would expect to find.
      If a bat has worse eyes than another it doesn't matter (as it would with eye-dependent creatures) since it's no evolutionary trait for them anymore, so even bats with worse eyes can reproduce without problems and pass on their bad-eyes-Genes to the next generation.
      After many generations they probably won't have eyes at all.
      In contrary: a Bat with worse sonar can't (for example) hunt as good as the others => less food => gets weaker => mating partners will regret it more often than the others with better Sonar (even if they find another bat to mate they won't be able to feed their offspring as well as the others) => Bad-Sonar-Genes won't be passed on to the next generation as much as Good-Sonar-Genes.
      If they were designed: why do they have eyes anyway since they don't use them? Bad design.

    This is one of the smarter (and more coherent) Atheists I've had the privilege of listening to, but unfortunately, he seems to deviate from Skepticism, a trait I would love to see within an Atheist (and have yet to find).
    That's just a personal crutch though. Still makes good videos, would highly recommend them to people of all religions.

      Viking102938 You've not seen skepticism within an atheist? We're skeptical of the claims of a theist, otherwise we'd be theists too.

      Arthur Fuksayk , I have talked to one, but it was like meeting a unicorn (I'm not totally convinced I wasn't asleep).
      It's a very rare thing, and is why I refer to Atheists as being religious (it's not the textbook definition, but, you know, whatevs).
      People that (claim) to be Atheists typically do support their own form of theism. They don't take my objection concerning their anti-theism thesis very well though.

    • @paulcooper1223
      @paulcooper1223 10 лет назад +1

      Viking102938 How can atheists support their own form of theism? Do you even know what the word 'theist' means?
      Atheists are skeptical. They're skeptical of any god claims as no evidence has been presented. I'm also skeptical of astrology, near death experiences, the existence of the soul among many other things.
      Now, do you have a coherent argument to present, or just ignorant statements about atheists?

    • @Viking102938
      @Viking102938 10 лет назад

      Arthur Fuksayk , if you can't continue this discussion calmly, then I won't be part of it.
      *Thesis:* "A statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved."
      It does not mean belief in a deity (I'm quite confused as to how people have gathered that).
      *Atheist:* "Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities."
      This is opposed to Agnostic.
      *Agnostic:* "Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims-especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, as well as other religious and metaphysical claims-are unknown or unknowable."
      As opposed to Skeptic.
      *Skepticism:* "An ancient or modern philosopher who denies the possibility of knowledge, or even rational belief, in some sphere."
      In summary, Atheism; belief in proof that there is no deity. Agnostic; belief that cannot be proved (it could be said Agnostic and Skeptic are almost synonymous). Skepticism; we can't prove religion (or anything else for that matter).
      If you're skeptical, that has nothing to do with being an Atheist. Atheism in of itself relies on evidence and a firm amount of faith (theism), whereas skepticism says "f*ck it all, I could be wrong about everything".

      Viking102938 I said:

      You replied:

      It does not mean belief in a deity (I'm quite confused as to how people have gathered that)."
      I'm guessing reading comprehension isn't one of your strengths.
      "If you're skeptical, that has nothing to do with being an Atheist. Atheism in of itself relies on evidence and a firm amount of faith (theism), whereas skepticism says "f*ck it all, I could be wrong about everything".
      Wrong, atheism is not faith-based.
      Theism: belief in a god or gods
      Atheism: Lack of belief in a god or gods
      The 'A' is the important part.
      Care to try again?

    This really proposes a false dichotomy between "God" and "evolution". The two are certainly not mutually exclusive. Creationism and evolution are mutually exclusive, no doubt, but classical Theism and evolution are definitely not conflicting and there are reasons beyond simplistic teleology for people to accept the God of classical Theism. (the argument from contingency, the prime mover argument, the distinction between existing things and existence itself, transcendental necessities, and many others). Also you presuppose the falsity of dualism without even offering an argument for monism. I can't say I am a dualist in the Cartesian sense, but you actually have to address the argument before using language like "sometimes it's hard to overcome" or "it may be hard to accept" because you're inserting your conclusion into your premise.

    • @MasteroftheRitz

      How is creationism in any way different than god they are both saying the same thing one leads to another. And this supposed "God of classical Theism" was just as fictional as last I checked, people trying to believe in the metaphysical seem just as deluded as those who believe a senior citizen built an ark.

      ***** Yes, his words do hold a false dichotomy. But since the dichotomy exists in the public mind, it's understandable to speak this way when discussing popular beliefs. I don't think Mr. Mehta shares that view.

      ***** Aquinas is wrong basically because his conclusions are based on a fallacy. "Everything needs something to cause it, except this one thing I simply assume doesn't". Why doesn't a deity need a cause?
      Simply put, Aquinas assumes God doesn't need a cause, he doesn't explain why the universe, or the preuniverse doesn't, he simply excludes god for no reason. I might as well say everything needs a cause except the universe and I'll be as correct as him (I'm not in this case). The correct question is: Does the universe need a cause or not?
      So is the universe god? depends, is it concious? No.
      What I mean is, if there has to be an unmovable mover, uncreated creator, and uncaused cause; Why does it have to be deity and not the universe? We can only trace back to the universe not a deity, so adding a deity to the causal chain only adds one more link, which is only assumed to be there, therefore can be disregarded.

    For The Atheist Voice, I think evolution means no God, and that's just not true..
    Evolution is a process and it could have been set in motion, by our Creator. We have so much to learn as a species..
    Neither the believer or non-believer, knows it all now.

      A lot of people believe that's the case, and that's how they reconcile their faith with evolution. However, the reason many people, including Richard Dawkins, don't like that, is because evolution is possible without God, so why bring God into the mix at all?

    I personally find it cool that I am related to everything. It really feels amazing when you realize that you and all of these creatures that evolved alongside your species are living on one rock near one star amid billions of stars and trillions of rocks, and this one is the only one we have found that supports life. It's amazing. It's also amazing that people say that atheists aren't spiritual when that second sentence is probably the most spiritual sentence I have ever written, and I was forced to attend a christian school.
