Last year, I said that the print version of The Skeptic's Annotated Bible was my favorite book of the year.
Well, that author, Steve Wells, is back with a new book. It's called Strange Flesh, and it's all about what the Bible says about homosexuality.
I asked him if I could share with all of you his first chapter, about the so-called "Clobber Verses" and he said yes. So a lot of what I'm saying here comes directly from his book.

There are only a handful of passages in the Bible that deal explicitly with homosexuality.
Conservative Christians cite them all the time.
Liberal Christian hate these verses. They call them the “clobber verses,” since they are the verses that conservatives clobber them with.
They claim, however, that none of these verses have anything to do with the issue of homosexuality.
It sounds like one of those things we ought to be able to figure out by looking at the verses themselves. So let's do that, and see what the two sides say about them.
1) Leviticus 18:22
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
That's how bad homosexuality is, right? It's an abomination!

Personally, there's a clear takeaway from all this. The Bible may condemn homosexuality, but as with many texts, there are ways to work around that if that's your desire. If you want to believe the Bible is truly a good book, you'll have to do a lot of rationalizing. And if you want to believe the Bible supports your anti-gay bigotry, you can make it do that, too.
Which is exactly why it's silly to say the Bible should be a rulebook for life. With so many ways to interpret it, it's not very helpful at all.

Ryan Harris No they don't. You can be an agnostic christian. Agnostic simply means you don't/can't know. Atheist simply means you do not believe in god. Anyone who says they don't know if there is a god or not, but they don't believe in one is an agnostic atheist. If you say you don't know there is a god, but you believe in the Christian god, you're an agnostic Christian.
Seriously People Belief in something is saying your absolutely sure of it, you can't have a belief in a god or no god if at the same time you're not sure at all. I mean, saying you don't know if there's a God but at the same time believing in the Christian God doesn't make u an agnostic Christian it was just make u a Christian! Ryan Harris Gonna have to disagree with you there. Obviously anytime faith is required is an example of belief without knowledge. I've never been to Canada, so I don't absolutely know it really exists, but I believe it does. Another example: Say your wife is screwing around on you. She tells you she isn't. You can believe her without having knowledge if it's true or not. In that case, you can believe in something that definitely is not true.

Binge eating is addictive to some people. The 7 deadly sins were to list the things that are addictive and to avoid becoming addicted. Knowing a lot of addicts in my life, this isn't something to mess around about. Some people are very sensitive to being addicted to those listed items.

I will admit that you seem to have a valid point when linking the study and knowledge of science and scientific theory, to the culture of theism, and the like. Obviously, the classes were not too in depth and were rather rudimentary. That being said, my knowledge on the subject is dwarfed by the minds that had actually made their theories into common knowledge, which can actually be seen and observed. Now, where your argument begins to falter is when you say that people only take a cursory glance at the bible, without taking into account the reasons or intents behind it, the culture, or all the other things you can supposedly "go on and on" about.
Furthermore, you claim that atheists who have come and gone actually didn't read or know most of the Bible. Really? You think they just look for random quotes and verses to add fuel to their argument? Let me tell you something, they don't have to look very hard. The Bible basically does it to itself. And the gullible just overlook the dark stuff and quote all the light hearted, fluffy stuff. You know? Like the difference between "smite every man, woman, and child you see, then take the young girls to be your wife" vs. "Be merciful to the poor"
As if the intent of the author writing about how gays are all going to perish in a lake of fire, or how a woman who gets raped can also be stoned to death 'because she didn't scream loud enough', is any justification for the bullshit to be written to begin with. It doesn't matter who wrote the book, why it was written, or what the culture of the time was like. The thing is, the words don't lie. They're not hiding in another dimension, they're plastered on thousands upon thousands of pages in imitation leather books sold in every Walmart on the face of the earth.
One thing I find very peculiar, is that you obviously have a very pronounced disdain for atheists, not for what they believe, but because you say they speak out of bigotry and arrogance? Try saying that to people who were spoon-fed literal bullshit like Christianity since their early childhood. Personally, I think Christians are the last people who should be pointing the finger.
Take a look at the perspective of an agnostic asking out of genuine curiosity, "Is it really fair that God would send me to Hell, just because I don't believe in him?" With the stereotypical response from the "All-loving" Christian, "Hey, Woah there, pal. God doesn't send you to Hell. You send YOURSELF to Hell by choosing not to believe in him." Kind of makes it sound like a....what's the word....ultimatum?

Thanks for the story, I do believe that believing in it's own of course is a choice.
This video wasn't about believing in god though, it was about Homosexual people being discriminated and hated and killed for their way of living, those people didn't hurt anyone.
They just wanted to live and be happy and open to others about who they were.

I want to let you know that there are atheists who became believers in God due to either of the following reasons: # 1. They felt God's presence in an open vision or during NDE [Near death experience] or # 2. Through their study, they explored and studied the accuracy and fulfillment of biblical prophecies.
Now, studying the prophecy doesn't take a lot of work. If you truly want to prove the validity of the Bible, study the prophecy..it made many atheists change their perspective about God and the afterlife.

Slightly off topic, but the part about god making people homosexual for not worshipping him enough made me think about how a lot of these rules and things god did were based off how much people worshipped him and in order to make sure people keep worshipping him. And people say I'm selfish...

No one in this world can live a holy blameless life. Only holy beings can live with God in heaven, that is why God gave His only begotten Son to save us from our sins. We cannot do it on our own, we need a Saviour, we need Jesus to get us back home

I'm openly an atheist at my Catholic school (the best school in my area and only choice really) and kids will sometimes try and pick fights with me about it. I think the bible was a coming-of-age story about a deity.
He starts by making something he thought was perfect, and got bored, so he gave that which was most like himself (some angels, and then humans) free will and thought. When one angel thought he was better than the young god, he cast him and his subordinates into a bin (we call it hell). And when humans decided to defy him for the first time, rather than destroy them, he put them on a world where they wouldn't bother him and they could learn a lesson in his absence. But he quickly got bored and started messing with his mortal pawns...
Eventually, he grows to late adolescence and seeks to have a child. Then Jesus's story happens.
Eventually, in his age, the god of the bible grew up and left us in his basement. Only to return during his midlife crisis where he plans to kill everybody and start over so he can feel like a kid again.

No Christian that practices the Bible would have an inherent problem with someone who disagrees with them; if any do they are practicing hypocrisy.
Deli Cheese I've been in many discussions with theists here on RUclips. Any dissent is usually met with a range from mild anger to outright vitriol. Tolerance is merely an illusion.
That said, Christianity doesn't appear to be the fast track to any sort of politeness.

One thing I recently hear and I like a lot.
If God gave us the liberty to choose what we want to do, why do you (religious guy) want to force us by making these rules laws of the government? Aren't you going against god's will by doing that?

Tomayah mayo No... what I was implying is 1) we often learn from books, they are a great resource for learning especially history and 2) the age of the information does not matter if the information is accurate so even though we know from over 6000 years ago 2+2 does equal 4 we still hold on to that truth and don't act dismissive of it solely because of its age.

A correct translation of Leviticus 18:22 says
"And with a male, thou shalt not lie down in a woman's bed; it is an abomination."
Not only is the verse found in modern versions of the Bible a mistranslation the original phrase is reflective of an aspect of culture that doesn't exist in today's society. [BTW, if the version of the Bible you're reading uses the word homosexuality you might as well give up - that word wasn't coined until the late 19th century.]
+Superficially Steph - just because it's in modern English doesn't mean it's a correct translation.
First question to ask is what version of the bible did the translators start with? If you check you're probably going to find that they started with the Latin version which is already a translation of the Greek which is a translation ....
Those translations are not necessarily correct since they're translations of copies of copies of translations of copies .... In many cases the copyists didn't even speak the language they were copying. The important point is that a mistranslation or copyist's error at any stage means that all subsequent copies are going to be "wrong". That's a fancy way of saying that, unless the translators were working from the original texts in the original languages the simple fact that a Bible is in modern English does not mean it's correct.
And there has been a significant amount of controversy over some of those modern translations. As a complete aside, don't know if you know it but William Tysdale, the individual that first translated the bible to English, was burned at the stake for doing so - the claim was that he was perverting scripture when the real reason was political - an English version of the bible could be read by the people rather than being filtered thru the clergy (since most people couldn't read Latin and the standard of the day was the Latin Vulgate edition).
Another complete aside - there are over 400,000 versions of the bible in existence (that's versions, not translations) and they don't all agree - think what that means in terms of any modern English translation - which one did they start with.
+Superficially Steph - it goes beyond not being translated correctly. In addition to translation errors there are copyists errors (remember that it was not uncommon for a copyist not to speak the language of the text he was copying) but texts were also changed to make it agree with the copyist's personal orthodoxy.
And there are wholesale additions. For example, everyone is familiar with the story of Jesus and the adulteress ("Let he who is without sin ..."). Great story and wonderful moral but it doesn't appear in any version of the bible before the 12th century. Who added it is unknown. Or the gospel according to Mark - that book originally ended with Mark 16:8. Everything afterwards (Mark 16:9-20) does not appear in the earliest bibles in existence. It was added at a later date, probably to make it consistent with Matthew.

One guy I know one told me a story about him getting shot point-blank in the right side of his chest. He was a "sinner" at the time and begun to drift off. He is now pleading for "God" to spare his life. When he wakes up he is in a coma and is told that he is in stable condition. He gives "God" all of the praise and props, but not once commended the effort and hard work of the doctor. He now claims it was the BLOOD OF GOD DRIVING THROUGH THEM TO DO WHAT THEY DID.

I have read Paul's letters in 7 languages, including Greek, and I have far more knowledge of Koine Greek and the context surrounding those 3 little verses you so love than you. Do you know why Paul wrote those letters, and why he was where he was when he wrote them. Do you know who he was writing about, and why they did what they were doing, do you even know where Paul was when he wrote those verses?

One thing I don't understand about Christians, is why they don't look back to the original texts when there is a translation problem causing a likely misinterpretation. Is it because they don't realize it's a translation? Maybe they assume other people already did? I get that most can't read those old languages, but many can.
As for homosexuality in the old testament, there is good evidence of it being added later on when the politics of the region changed and that it was not in the inspired original laws.
I personally think people don't really care to check these things because they like what they are hearing and choose not to think critically about any of it in the first place.

The verses in Romans chapter one that you quoted do no say that God made people gay. Not even reading the context.
The specific verse is Romans 1:24 "Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,"
and Romans 1:26,"For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature."
The verses say "God gave them up". In other words God just let them do whatever they wanted. It does not say God made them gay.

As a Christian I tend to interpret the bible based on the two greatest commandments as defined by Matthew 22 verses 34-40 which state that the two greatest commandments are to "love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength" and to "Love thy neighbor as thyself" Which means to love others as yourself, so if any other commands make me feel that I am not treating someone as I would want them to treat me I would just flat out disregard it.
The New Testament verses reference Deut. 6:4-5, and Leviticus 19:18. Jesus didn’t make up the concepts, he quoted them.

Before chutch the preacher asked me what I did last week and I told him that my son has a son that is a year old. In Matthew, Jesus says something along the lines of: Whatever you hold true on Earth shall be held true in Heaven, and whatever you discard on Earth shall be discarded in Heaven.
Doesn't this mean that we get to change our laws to suit our society, and not go to hell for it?

i know this is off topic but i'm doing this assignment for my English class about how religion affects public schools and i seem to have trouble finding sources for it such as statistics and articles.If anybody helps i would greatly appreciate it.
I would look at some news articles for that one. For example the controversy of regions texts in schools. Even some kid got an okay to bring a dagger to school due to it was a sacred object (in their religion they aren't allowed to have anyone but them see it.)
So, I have a dilemma. Whenever I try to point out all the immoral things in the old testament, mainly Leviticus, to my mother, she always says I'm "taking it out of context." I find her retort to me is just a way to try to justify herself. I'm not exactly sure my retort to this. Does any one have any ideas on how I can have an "intelligent" conversation with her, without my point being shot down immediately?
You could open up a bible and show her exactly where the verses are and she'll see that you weren't taking them out of context at all.
I have religious friends that always say I'm taking verses out of context or if it's from the Old Testament the verses are no longer "relevant". So if she's super about Jesus, that's probably what she'll say back. Just say this back, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Matthew 5:17. (It's a quote from Jesus)
But anyway, if she isn't willing to listen at all, there's not much of a point.
Ohoh, or you could direct her to the Skeptics Annotated Bible website. There's a section where you can click on "hatred", "murder", "sexism", "rape" all that stuff and find huge lists of everywhere those subjects come up in the bible. It's pretty rad.

You want a resolution for you dilemma? Don't have them altogether. Trust me, my Mom is the same, when I first got into Atheism I used to have debates with mine and just like your mom she always say something of that nature repeatedly in almost all arguments because her mind is basically programmed to trust in God no matter what. There's not really anything you can say to change that. It's best if you just enjoy your time with your mother in doing other things than engaging at this endless cycle of debates.

In the terms of loving God is about following and trusting in Him to become more like Him. Once this manifests (by the Holy Spirit), you will love like God. How to do it is first Read his WORD and prayer. Caution: You might know how to, but staying in the WORD and prayer keeps you steadfast. In other words, don't think just because you prayed once and went to church and read a verse that you are better than anyone. Continuation.

How Christians justify supporting homosexuality despite certain Bible verses:
Leviticus Chapter 18 - In context, gay sex is only an abomination if done in a Pagan temple (wtf??).
Leviticus Chapter 20 - Let's pretend this one doesn't exist. Besides, this is in the Old Testament, which is nullified by the New Testament (even though the word of an omni-benevolent, all-knowing being shouldn't be wrong to begin with).
Romans Chapter 1 - Paul said some silly things, we shouldn't take him seriously (even though this would mean the Bible isn't infallible, opening up a can of worms in regards to the credibility of the rest of the book). Also, more Pagan temples.

Im not Atheist, and was raised in the south in a Baptist Christian church and trust me when i say this. I love that this video brought the topic to mind. I discussed this with mu church community and everything he said was true. People have different views of the bible and i apprecaite the views from both sides.
As a Christian you should have loved this. He is not an atheist. He is arguing to try to convert homosexuals into christianity. Most christians want to do that because they know that their beliefs are dying off faster with each generation, and they are afraid of not being to conn enough money out of people their money to support the vast wealth of churches. The bible says stars can fall. They cannot.
The bible describes the sun and the stars as being separate things. They are not, they are the same.
I could continue, but the point is, the bible says many things, and many of those things are outright false.

I think that people just need to realize that the bible or nothing in it was written by god himself! The bible was written by the high priests of that time and they added and embellished as they saw fit. Not all stories are true they are wrote to make a point. Hey guys guess what, GOD didn't write the bible. People who believed in him did. If you had the ability to write a book of rules then wouldn't u include some of your own concerns too. Also there is the case that if back then homosexuality was very uncommon and considered wrong by all it would still be put in the bible even if God specifically think against gays.

The idea that you can be superior to other people is partially due to the belief that you are unlike them in a superior way (one God ruling in your favor against a pantheon of Gods randomly dictating your luck is a good way to go about it, and what better way to sell it whilst expressing your disdain for such unfavorable gods than going against them?) is very powerful and easy to sell. The new testament verses are an issue but i think you missed a bigger objection to Leviticus. Namely that theres a very serious question of how that should be translated. Namely that it may more accurately be talking about pedophilia or child prostitution. Again i agree this doesnt affect the new testament verses but leviticus is another matter.

Equating all laws in the Old Testament to each other shows a misunderstanding of Christ's purpose and the scope of his mission. He changed _ceremonial laws_ and _dietary laws_, but _Natural Law_ (e.g. sexuality) remained. Thus, the verses quoted regarding fish and goats are irrelevant.
I'm not sure how we can conclude that God makes someone homosexual from that passage (Romans). I'm not here to argue homosexuality is _choice_ or if people are _born this way_, but the passage itself merely shows that the people have chosen against God by _acting on their passions_. God doesn't inhibit their free will. Ultimately, the sin is not in _having homosexual temptations_, but in _acting out_ on them, which these people did.
Perhaps the most applicable passage to marriage and human sexuality is in Matt 19:5, "Have you not heard that from the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So, they are no long two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no two shall separate."
From a secular and religious pov, the above passage is a great explanation of the purpose of man and woman's unitive and reproductive nature. They were and are, as we see from a natural pov, intended for each other. We can simply _appeal to nature_ to explain that marriage between a man and a woman is a commitment to what nature has intended for us.
With that said, hatred toward any group of people is unethical. Tolerance, however, applies only to people, and never to principles.
Leviticus 18:22 is about lesbians as well which is common sense that didn't need to be mentioned for both and back in the days people only referred to men when speaking.
The fact that the Bible is not clear on homosexuality says a lot, I could go into all kinds of detail on the translations etc but it seems so unlikely that it would matter.
To say the Apostle Paul, 'Said a lot of silly things', is one of the biggest understatements I've heard in awhile.

Remind me again why it is important for a christian who have read the gospels to know the old testament and believing that is the same god as the one God Jesus talks about?
