Met him at a meet and greet years ago, he shook my hand as i said "dude, youre the man." he simply nodded and said, "well, yea." lol He also looks like hes lost a lot of weight, looks really healthy. good for him.
If Dave Lombardo is the Godfather of Double Bass, and Gene Hoglan taught Dave how to work with Double Bass, would that make Gene Hoglan the God of Double Bass?
drummed for death, testament, SYL and dethklok. one of the most busiest guys ever in the metal scene and yet he finds time to do this interview. All the while being chill as all hell. what is he, absolute legend. Seems like a genuinely nice guy
His drumming in Death's Symbolic is unreal and blows me away every time I listen to it. For someone with such ungodly talent Gene comes cross as a total down to earth guy. One of the greatest drummers out there.
Eli Simmons his only album with Fear Factory was Mechanize. I think the last 2 Testament albums were better because of him. What can you say for him being almost 50 years old and just recently releasing the album with his fastest blast he ever recorded?
And the first 6-7 minutes they were only talking about Slayer. I mean, people ask him about that stuff in every interview. We don't need to hear that again.
It's funny I always thought I was one of the only people who actually learned how to play the drums pretty well by literally air drumming and playing with sticks only on whatever I could hit! I literally taught myself literally maybe 50-100 songs before I ever played a kit. And surprisingly, once was at a kit was able to play the songs well in weeks bc my hands and feet already knew where to go and when! Awesome to hear GH started the same way!
I love the fact that he told Chuck and the other Testament guys that he was committed to SYL. If only Dev could of continued his Strapping insanity. Love that band!
Very down-to-earth. Hoglan has played some epic tracks with some epic bands. Was a highlight for me meeting him with Testament in Hollywood, FL, a number of years ago.
I got 10 seconds of Gene's time on 8/12/18 to say "Thank You and Thanks for coming to Nashville," He was very cordial and even put his hand out to shake mine.
Why do you care whether I say "cool" or "cool as fuck"?! It's my comment, I'll say whatever I want to say however want to say it. Go get you some business and stay up out of mines!
One of my fav drummers ever! he is a beast on the kit but i have never listened a bad word from random people when they talk about this awesome human being :D
I met Gene and his wife at a souplantion in SAN Diego,California.where I used to WORK at,him and his wife were real cool people. a real down to earth man. my RESPECT to them.
Uncle Ram. right up there with Vinnie? I do like Vinnie. he is a good drummer and a huge personality but he's not in gene hoglan's league. not even close
Why create a discussion on who's the best? Gene is a beast behind the kit. He's by my opinion one of the fastest, tightest on either hand and one of the most technical drummers in history. But Gene has his place, I doubt that he could have contributed to the sound of Pantera, the same goes with Lars Ulrich, a lot of people says Lars is a shitty drummer, but i haven't heard a single drummer who has created a similar aggression or sound in their playing. I'm so lucky to be alive in a time of so much different inspirations! 🤘
When I first heard Brotherhood of the Snake, I had no idea Gene was the drummer. I just remember being blown away by the drums, never actually researching who the drummer was. It all makes sense now
What a nice guy. Really a positive personality and a huge drum influence. I've met him once and recall buying him a drink at a club. I wish more people were this personable and approachable.
I'd love to jam with Gene! Man, that would be fun!!! Seems like he'd have fun playing almost any kind of metal. I've been a fan for over 20 years! Someday haha...
Imagine my surpise learning that after listening to Brotherhood of the Snake and then a few months later watching this video learning that Gene played the drums on that record. The drumming is phenomenally good. A lot of technique, amazing fills and intricate beats.
"How long have you been playing double bass?" "I don't know, like, three or four minutes?" :D :D Epic. Very entertaining to watch. I don't know how tall Graham is, but the other videos don't make him look overly small, so... that would explain why Gene seems to hardly move behind the kit, he's just enormous and can reach anything with hardly any motion.
This is one of those amazing guys that you just have to love. Crazy good drummer, he has done it all and also he seems really down to earth and friendly. Great!
Nothing about the mighty Dark Angel? And Rush opened up for KISS more than any other band did. The double bass on Angel of Death - Dave and Rick used a digital delay to make it twice as fast.
Not only is Gene Hoglan the ultimate Metal Drummer but he’s also the nicest and humblest guy in the business. I had the pleasure of meeting Gene during Testament’s Dark Roots of the Earth tour and he was super cool to talk to. Not pretentious at all! To this day I not only consider him the best drummer in the scene but I cherish the time I spent hanging out with him! Super cool guy! Also, Dark Roots of the Earth, Brotherhood of the Snake, And now Titans Of Creation are some of the best albums Testament has have ever produced! I think a huge part of that is because of Gene’s drumming and all around involvement! In my opinion Testament’s current lineup is the best it’s ever been! I can’t wait until this covid-19 scare is over so I can see Testament live again! I really want to hear some of their new songs live in all of there glory!
Woooow this was very cool!!!! I remember in my drumming days doing exactly the same and funny enough, also with the music from Dimmu. Thank Gene, Graham & Loudwire!
Met him once as the band I was in at the time played right before Pitch Black Forecast. I'm a long time drummer myself. So there I was, turned around, " Oh look it's Gene Hoglans kit" He was using ddrum at the time.
Hearing him talking about air drumming made me think about what my brother used for a drum kit before we had one, a metal fan for a high hat and a cardboard box for a snare. \m/
My old hommie Per M. Jensen, former Invocator & 10 yrs in The Haunted, was support to Dark Angel, where Gene started drumming. After that tour, Hoglan was after that European Tour, his biggest inspiration & Drum "God", in the days.. Just a little anekdote..
Gene Hoglan seems like an awesome guy.
Yeah seems real cool.

yo
The Abyssal Archivist yup, he's totally cool, he used to come in to the drum shop I worked at in Vancouver - great dude!
He is, I worked with him once
If Dave Lombardo is the Godfather of Double Bass, and Gene Hoglan taught Dave how to work with Double Bass, would that make Gene Hoglan the God of Double Bass?
GENERAL T-BONE amen brother
GENERAL T-BONE that is correct .
No, Pete Sandoval is the double bass god.
Jay Tuck yup. Gonna go Per Ohlin on my brain box because I disagreed with some dude over a drummer.
The Irate Metalhead yes, exactly. Please do that.
drummed for death, testament, SYL and dethklok. one of the most busiest guys ever in the metal scene and yet he finds time to do this interview. All the while being chill as all hell. what is he, absolute legend. Seems like a genuinely nice guy
He played in Dark Angel too. Why do people always forget about that?
He also played in a band called "Zimmer's Hole."
Not to mention all those solo Devin albums. The dude's kept busy for a long time.
Fear Factory too.
opeth temporarily also. he's in the grand conjuration video
His drumming in Death's Symbolic is unreal and blows me away every time I listen to it. For someone with such ungodly talent Gene comes cross as a total down to earth guy. One of the greatest drummers out there.
Even better on ITP
Hoglan rules!
He's like the long lost brother of Vinnie and Dime.
Kei Kurono yea foot taller lost brother
I just imagine some kind of Malcolm in the Middle dynamic with those three together as siblings
They’re all from Dallas too and they play thrash metal
@@AAVVVAAADDAAAKAAADAVRAAA I have no idea how tall Gene is, but I'm guessing 6'5"-6'7"
@@mrs_death_metal_ 6'7 yep
I was expecting some reference to his time on Death...
Or Dark Angel
Right...Chuck Billy ain't the only (or first) Chuck he worked with!
TheMetalGaia yeah! For one second I thought he was talking about Schuldiner when he said "Chuck was telling me (...)"
Lol, I saw an interview with Gene once where he talked about Schuldiner at length. He really looked up to him. What a shame. Fuck cancer, right?
+War Never Changes i thought the same! Especially when he was also mentioning "Eric". Thought he was talkin bout Eric Grief manager of Death. Lol.
One of the greatest metal drummers ever!
drum911 *One Of The Greatest Drummer EVER in Any Genre \m/
The best of every genre.
The best drummer
What? Dethklok usually kills their fans! Now they save people, they've gone mainstream.
nice failure pfp dude thats pretty gnar
Worldwide suicide has begun sweeping the nation after Dethklok has gone mainstream
How could you NOT talk about Dark Angel and Death?

I'm in love with this guy for over 20 years. It's "symbolic" love of course.
nroks Yea,I love this guy to "Death" as well
I love the way he thinks as well. He has some pretty interesting "Individual Thought Patterns".
nroks I wonder if he speaks Black Prophecies (Dark Angel reference for those who don't know)
TomShreds way to kill the strings of incredible puns man. I have "Zero Tolerance" for that sort of thing.
You mean it's Symbolic Love? Oh my fucking god that was terrible.
Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo have to be the most down to earth guys in metal.
The stuff Gene played on the drums with Death was the craziest drumming I've ever heard and is impossible to play I have no idea how he played that
Eli Simmons his work in Fear Factory and Testament is almost as good as his work with Death imo
Nellson Stout I'm gone check it out it out because I love his style on the drums
I think he took all that to the max in Strapping Young Lad, although the Death stuff is impressive too.
Eli Simmons his only album with Fear Factory was Mechanize. I think the last 2 Testament albums were better because of him. What can you say for him being almost 50 years old and just recently releasing the album with his fastest blast he ever recorded?
Nellson Stout I absolutely love Genes playing thanks for letting me know what's his material with fear factory and Testament
they do get that wrong sometimes
He says that every time
Never seen that shit.
He should trademark that. Like the "lets get ready to rumble" guy.
Oh ok
Read this comment as it was being said lol
Greatest metal drummer of all time in my opinion.
Matthew Elliott same the stuff he played with Death was insane
Many would agree with that statement
I'm thinking it's probably not just your opinion. The guy is definitely the standard everyone else tries to work towards
His playing is so effortless, just flows naturally. A true legend that should receive way more recognition...
Agree. He had played with so many bands and different styles and made masterpieces with all of them.
this dude just earned my respect, damn good fucking guy.
It's Dewple All great drummers should be this cool.
gene is such a nice guy and what a drummer, his drumming in death's symbolic are just out of this world

Exactly, and even then it sounds perfect...
I love the fact that he told Chuck and the other Testament guys that he was committed to SYL. If only Dev could of continued his Strapping insanity. Love that band!

I don't think he's underrated at all. Pretty much everyone in the metal scene knows he's one of the best.
One of the most respected and recorded drummers in metal. Yeah very underrated.
Honor to Gene Hoglan , one of the most best metal drummers
Not long enough! He's so well spoken, I'm sure he has a thousand stories. He needs to do an autobiography; I'd definitely buy it.
So if you're from Texas and you got your start playing to KISS records, you're probably going to be a kick-ass drummer.
Yep. Same with Vinnie Paul.
