Growing up I was taught to question whether something was a want or a need, and if it wasn't a need I was encouraged to wait a day and see if it was still a want. A little thing but it's stuck with me and I think it works really well!
I am a firm believer in this practice because it's been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Now in my 40s I am starting to peak in life and I'm smashing all my goals. I'm a better man, father , spouse and business owner because of this 🙏🏾
In a world where everyone wants things now , immediately this message is very timely and hits home to be grateful for the here and now ! Slow down and be present. Thanks Emilio
Your mom and dad sound like 2 very hard working people and no doubt that is engrained in your too Mr Justo. Great talk and message. Thank you for sharing with all of us.
One of my fondest memories was finding my daughter sitting next to the newly planted strawberry bushes. When asked what she was doing she replied "Waiting for the strawberries". Lesson number one in delayed gratification.
Haha I love this! One of the memories my parents brings up a lot was when they walked out in the backyard to see me lying on my belly on the lawn. They asked me what I was doing and I said "Watching the grass grow!" I always go back to that to remember to slow down and be
Choosing to pursue medicine in my mid-20s was an extremely tough choice I had to make, especially since I was about to leave behind a career in engineering and financial comfort for a path that required hard work, discipline, and frugal choices. Now that I am finishing up medical school, I'm starting to feel the gratification and validation that I had made the right choice. It's very evident to me now the difference of being your own master of desire, rather than giving into convenient impulses when going through rough patches in life
I think the 3 steps are straightforward and actionable! Makes sense that defining your goals, making a plan and actively working towards them makes them achievable.
Wow, that chance encounter during your travels is incredible! It's amazing how delayed gratification can shape our lives and even lead to such serendipitous moments.
When we were in Ecuador this summer, people kept commenting on my husband's Purdue hat and shirt. What a conversation piece! You are so animated and I love that you move around instead of just standing in one spot. You are a great role model of being an inspiring presenter. Thank you for sharing your moving story about coming from Cuba at 3 and working hard to be the success story that you are today.
Brilliant talk and i have tried to implement your advice in my own life. You have inspired me to think about the bigger picture and what i really want to achieve , so thank you !
Thank you for sharing your story Dr. Justo, it really resonated with me as someone who also grew up with parents who immigrated. The concrete steps you provided and advice on how to avoid temptation and seek long-term fulfillment is really helpful, I look forward to implementing them :) -Rosa
Dr. Emilio Justo delivers a captivating TEDx talk, based on his own experiences as a Cuban immigrant. He learned quickly that people who practice delayed gratification are the most successful in life. Through his own journey, the audience learns the tips and strategies to master delayed gratification. An eye-opener and a key to the success you desire.
Fascinating talk. The idea that delaying our need for instant gratification will prevent us from being slaves to our impulses is profound. It supports his concept that the achievement of our most important goals depends on our willingness to delay and plan rather than living a life that seeks instant gratification in almost everything we do. This is an important issue that I believe needs to be expressed, especially to our youth. Outstanding talk and topic!
Dr. Justo is absolutely terrific. I am privileged to be a patient of his. He is an excellent clinician and above all an inspiration to all who know him. His caring, compassionate and humble personality comes through in his words and actions. His story is truly amazing!
