    Well when the picture is so dark the video encoder has nothing to do since most of the pixels are black. The video bitrate will be lower and that is why you can transfer it with no problem. Take the same test when it is sunny and you will see the difference.

    This was almost as nerve-wracking as the Mavic Pro on the mountain. Even you were much more nervous on that one. :-)
    But this is an amazing test. I'd have never thought you'd get that range from a Mavic Air, especially in urban conditions. Thanks a lot!

      Its fun as hell i bought one 3 days ago. Barely flew it yesterday for the first time. I been researching regulations and rules, Maintenance, pre-flight requisites. Basically this thing is to not be a considered a toy. Also registered my drone operator license from the FAA under 107 commercial drone. Went on a test flight and its super addicting and fun! Going to keep practicing today, as well as making adjustments on the camera and wifi settings, Calibration all that good stuff. Def a cool hobby to get into but you must do hours and hours and hours and hours of research. There are people who constantly lose their drones and blame dji but i realize they are just retarded of the highest type. People think "oh i can just buy a drone take it out the box and just fly it without any reprocussions. Nope, #1 you need at least 10 satellites before you even take off. #2 download an app called kittyhawk. It shows you the no fly zones and where you can and can't fly also allows you to get authorization to fly from nearby airport control towers. People wonder why their drone just fell out of the sky uhhh probably air control shooting down your drone due to negligence. Stay informed and good luck!

    Hi Dustin, me and my wife just flew back home (Calif) from Maui last night. What an awesome and relaxing place to be. Right before I left, I took a range test of my Mavic Pro at Kalama Park and broke my range record at 30,356 feet round trip, which is about 5.7 miles. I could have flown farther since I had almost no signal drop but chickened out due to low battery concern. My heart was pounding so fast but my Mavic Pro RTH safe and still go 18% battery left. What a nerve wrecking experience but also fun. Thanks for posting this night flight mission and I enjoy all of your video. Keep up the great work sir.

    The Mavic pro did 15,515 for rth trigger. The Air made it to 12,500 for its rth battery trigger.
    Still impressive in my opinion. I wonder how far the Mavic would get being pushed to 50% battery and using the stick assist.
    I'm actually thinking of getting the air. I like the quick shot features. Only 3 were added to the Mavic Pro.

    Pulling up a chair to check out another nail-biting drone range test by the master of the genre, albeit a few years after the video clip's first publication. With a used Mavic Air1 on the way in the post as I type these words today June 9th, 2022, this video clip addresses one of the more important considerations for me, namely how long the drone can stay aloft while flying a fully autonomous Litchi waypoint mission at the standard cruising speed of 17.9 mph.
    Recently my trusty Mavic Pro1 was inbound but far off having defaulted to a low battery RTH while out over a rainforest. Recalling this advice about pushing the craft into a nose-down attitude by holding the controller's right stick forward so as to increase airspeed, I saw that the altitude dropped gradually, which I of course counteracted by pulling back on the right stick slightly, to bring the nose up and slow that unintended descent during RTH.
    In this Mavic Air range test, I see that the 206-foot altitude did not decrease during the RTH return leg of the flight, despite a fully nose-down attitude with the right stick fully forward. This altitude stability maintained despite a full nose-down attitude is a valuable feature of the Mavic Air1 that my Mavic Pro1 evidently does not have. This is another reason I look forward to the delivery of my new-to-me Mavic Air1.
    Amid the mild panic one feels when a drone is still a ways off and running low on battery power, it would be easy for a Mavic Pro1 owner to ignore the altimeter readout and wind up with the drone flying that final homeworld beeline much closer to the terrain than the pre-programmed RTH altitude. That particular worry has apparently been eliminated for the Mavic Air1. Hats off to Mr. Dustin Dunhill once again for boldly venturing where mere mortal drone pilots fear to tread.

    This thing definitely has massive range anxiety in terms of battery life. I flew my regular mavic pro a total distance of 31,900 feet and arrived back with 30% battery life, averaging around 456 feet per battery percentage point, meaning I could have technically stretched that trip to 7 miles total and arrived back with somewhere around 19% battery life. Although, half of the trip was done via RTH, which may run more efficiently than the sport mode I used to go out in the first place.
    Nonetheless, it's quite amazing what such a compact device can do with a mere 2,375 mAh battery compared to the 3,830 mAh in the Mavic Pro.

    Great story telling. felt like we were doing it ourselves. I wonder if shutting off 4K recording and sensors in a low battery emergency would squeeze out much more distance? • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

      Yes I know. I honestly like this way better since it auto adjusts it's heading to point directly at home. Whenever I exit rth and try it's always a bit off and you burn some power correcting it anyway 👍

    • @Huwtube72
      @Huwtube72 6 лет назад

      Yes, but the faster speed benefit achieved by Sports mode would probably outweigh the small amount of extra power used by correcting a slight heading direction deviation. Sports mode may drain the battery quicker but you still end up covering more ground than if you were flying in regular mode. I always use Sports mode as the best way to go far and come back from afar. You can easily test this by doing some long range flights in the two different flight modes and seeing which mode covers more ground overall. I would also mention that Sports mode becomes even more important when returning home fighting any kind of headwind, and actually becomes essential once that headwind goes above a certain mph threshold.

    You've done us a great service in that now I don't have to do my own range test. I know how far it will go, and for that I'll probably never run out of distance as I like to keep it within 2000 feet. If I need more, I'll start closer. :D

    Great video, I don't think you would've made it if you hadn't press the stick forward. That was close.

    Awesome range, so close to 3 miles. Should turn off all avoidance sensors to help extend the battery life possibly when you try with the dishes to get Max range. Great videos!

    Wow this is amazing! Makes me want to run out and get one right now! If I'm not mistaken, the first time around you had a wind, and I think you had turned off some of the sensors, since you were just doing a range test. Unreal man... Woot!

    Great video. You probably already know this but I just found out today if you put your phone in airplane mode it blocks out other Wi-Fi interference for longer distance. I haven't tested it yet though. 👍

    Why are you the only guy who can get that kind of range out of this little guy👍🏻 alot of youtubers are still getting regular range. I live in Sydney Nova Scotia, do you think I could get close to that range? I hope so☺ thinking about purchasing the fly more combo.

      Megzamani i told him a few vids back that when returning home in "rth" mode the air will only do 18 mph.... well if u hold right stick forward u will achieve 29 mph while still being in rth mode....most dji drones do this...figured this one out a while back.... basically it's a relatively safe and efficient speed ...it's not like you're returning home in sport mode which would kill battery.... it has saved my butt many times

    Hey Dustin. UPDATE! Left you a message here 2 months ago about wanting to attempt to fly my Mavic Air over the Delaware River to Pea Patch Island to Fort Delaware! Flying over water makes me nervous but I got the nerve to do it last Friday and made it over and back! I was having some issues with wifi interference messages which were probably due to my friend flying his Phantom 3 nearby. ! I was using my range extenders as a precaution and had no problem with the battery with the 5517 feet distance. If the interference wasn't present, I'm sure I could have went beyond the island. I did post it and some friends referenced you! I told them that I am a big fan of yours and hopefully you will get to see the video and give me some feedback. I added commentary. (I learned that from you! Smile!) I will try another flight over there soon when I have time and the conditions are right. Next time I will push that right stick forward on the way back to shorten the flight and the video. BTW, I'm crazy about this night flight and show it to all of my drone friends! You are tops man!

    Mahalo for this vid. I had to send the link to several of my flying buddies who questioned my decision when I bought the air.”I should have waited for the MPII, it’s like the spark, it’s junk”.. etc.You just proved all those naysayers wrong! I too after the update was able to fly almost a mile out, during daylight though, too chicken to fly it at night.Watching your vid makes me more confident to it her further. I own the MP, and the Spark, but for being compact, longer flight time that the Spark, and 4K video, this is my go to drone. Question, do you miss your MP that landed in the lake? Keep up the great videos!
