- Hi guys here is how to set up and find the best setting for your Mavic Air to achieve the max distance possible in the USA or outside the US.
The Mavic Air is great machine but unfortunately it is not a straight forward drone out of the box. Following this review you will learn in few easy steps how to reach the maximum distance for your drone without having video lagging in your screen.
We have been using the magic air for more than 3 weeks now and love it!

Beautiful country. I look at this in amazement, as I have to go outside and remove 2 feet of snow from my driveway to get to work. I really hate snow! nice video, thanks.
thanks a lot William
Wish everyone makes such to the point videos. Thanks from India.
The smaller the line the better is exactly the information I have been looking for. Mine always defaults to 5.8ghz, but I have been getting really short range - less than 200 feet at times. I am now going to try with a manually selected channel with a s small green line. Thanks!
Hope it works, let good luck
Did it work?
It certainly helped - I got around 300 metres before low a low signal warning. It bought a SunnyLife parabolic reflector set (dirt cheap, worth a try) and now have a range of about 500 metres before warning messages. This is still substantially short of the DJI promise, but I wonder if it is something to do with being in a Class D airspace? Although I am in the countryside there is an international airport 20 kms away - flight paths do not go over us - and we do see the occasional light aircraft at quite low altitude as well as rarely the air force flying fighters along the valley below. All that said, half a kilometre is probably going to be as much as I will need - it's so small it gets hard to see much further out.
Howard Worf it should go further than that . When you switch channel wait for 10-20secs to see if the channel gets busy ( long line) also check on the internet how to change to FCC mode.
Thanks for all the interest you are taking in my range issue, and for all your help. Re the wifi bar, I thought that the channel I choose would always show busy, because the Mavic is using it. Certainly I choose a channel with a small green bar, and then after it has been selected it goes full length - happens no matter which channel. I shall look into the FCC thing, although I am uneasy about flying outside the regs.
Fantastic, clear information super video, your English is perfect. Many thanks...........
Thanks for this video. I was so dissapointed with my Mavic air bc of range, can't wait to try this when I get home tonight!
Amazing video and very easy to follow. Great job much appreciated,
Omg! Amazing you changed my life haha!! Thank you soooo much sub
Happy to hear so!!
Got the same problem with Mavic Air's automatic channel selection while i'm in Bali. And ended up flying in short range.Thank you buddy so much for sharing this brilliant idea. WOW!! =)
Nice Shots and good tips on the channel selection
Thank you! That was really what I was looking for!
Oh man... Just returned from bali last week.. Wish I had seen this video earlier.. Was having the same issues...
Bali is a good place to come back to ☺️
excelent.. thank you very much.. this is great tutorial... for range extension...
When you set the signal to 1.21 jigawatts it transports your drone into the future!
Only if you have a Flux Compensator installed.
Buddy i tried it this night and it worked!!!! Thanks
Yes !! That is it !! We wanted to help enjoy the Mavic to its potential
Perfect!!! Thanks for this very helpful information!
Happy you found it useful
Huge thanks man! Definitely gonna try this and hopefully it'll improve the range which is currently seriously shit. Big thumbs up
Hope it works out for you!
Did it work?
Did it work?
Thank you sir, you have helped me solve a very irritating problem concerning the mavic air!
Glad it helped
2.4 JIGAHERTZ
Funny accent but at least man knows what he’s talking about and gave a shit to educate the rest of us.
At least, he didn't say NIGGAHERTZ :)
1.21 JIGAWATTS!?!
Very good video. Solid info on range!.
I definitely learned something new!! Thanks.
Very happy to hear so. Happy flying
Thanks for your comment flying with care is a must !!
I was dealing with 2.4G for the last 1.5 years. thanks! :D
I am strugle trying to get the consistent Video Feed, thanks for giving a great tips... I'll try tomorrow.
I will definitely try it, since I am experiencing a lot of lost transmission with automatic setting. I hope this solve major issue with lagging. Thanks.
Really great video presented in a very nice way and with super interesting information! Will try it out on next flight myself.
As for the format of this clip where I saw someone saying you should edit it and make it shorter...I for one disagree.
Again, I really liked how you framed the actual info the way you did where you by doing so allowed the viewer to not only get the fact but rather the complete picture.
Thanks for the info and for sharing!!
thanks!
Fantastic video - all made perfect sense and well explained. Hopefully will solve my problem
Thanks so much for this video!
Good tips
make a video on how to get better signal for mavic 2
Same principles should apply
@@Underwatertribe im using the smart controller, automatically switches which network to use for best reception
There should be a way to switch from auto to manual .
@@Underwatertribe there is an auto setting but still doesnt tell u on controller when signal is about to be lost and turn around, it just cuts off and pray you have RTH setting turned on
Nice video Brother. An honest opinion, should I buy the Air or go for a Pro model? Im on a budget and sold things but want best drone for flight time????
The pro ! Range and time in the air much better . The only advantage I see on the Mavic air is the small size of the drone
@@Underwatertribe Thanks friend. I am thinking of the Pro Platinum as slightly bigger and will handle wind a bit better high up here in the UK. What do you think as not bothered about a small size, as need weight and flight time as a newbie??? Thanks again for your help and advice ;o))))
Great drone! If you can get a good deal worth it. However, if you can afford it go for the Pro 2 zoom
@@Underwatertribe There is no way I could afford the Pro 2 Zoom... Would love to, but cannot :o(
Nice Review! Very helpful and everyone should know that ;)
You got a sub :))
Andrin Hettinger thanks a lot
Andrin Hettinger news flash 2.4 and 5.1 are, the, same, range in the dessert but in the city 5.1 channel is better you forgot to mention that when you are in the desert there are not any Wi-Fi interference way more in the city and your wernt in line of,sight that I know lol
Hi Luca, Just watched the video on Mavic Air range and it sounds so simple. However, others say you must do the CE to FCC hack using an android device. Cannot do the hack with IOS and it all sounds complicated.
Are you saying regardless of IoS or Android your channel change from 2.4 to 5.8 ghz is enough to increase the range? Thanks
I know is late 😂 but , not only switching can be beneficial , you also have to take a minute find the channels that are not that busy
Great video... helped me alot!! just now.. thanks!
5.8Ghz have less power because this is shorter wave but in 2.4 is more interferences so if you don't have interferences, use 2.4.The Best option is 2.4 Ghz with FCC mode
TheWieczu agree to both !!
Thank you !!! Like &subscribed😇👍👍👍👍👍
Happy to hear so!! Thanks
Good job, thank you
Tekkphoto Aerial Video thank you happy you like it
Is this issue fixed?
Good video -- thanks for the useful info on how to switch 2.4 to 5.8 GHz -- nice scenery in this video.
how about for urban setting?? ty for the insight
Not the best performer in cities, the problem is the that the WiFi signal weakens dramatically when loose the line of sight between remote controller and drone. Switch to 5ghz WiFi signal for the better results
I really enjoyed that, real world advice! I thought we were looking for green, but that the height of the line represented strength, not traffic? Completely wrong?? Can't wait to try out! Much obliged from a UK user! Subed!
I subscribed! What an awesome video and you’re almost to 1,000 subs! Hope this helps, I’m trying to get there too and learning how to fly my Mavic Air. Just bought a kit to hook up a 360 camera to it too and dying to test that out if anyone wants to see :)
Thanks for the video. I'll give it a go. I have been flying my mavic pro and it rarely happens. I'd have to be in a tall mountain range or with a lot of tall buildings for it to cut out. The Air on the other hand kept cutting cutting out in less than a 100m. Dissapointing out of the box, maybe DJI should not use this WiFi tech again. I'll try your suggestions. Thanks.
You are in a FCC region when you switch from 2.4 to 5.8 the transmission power rises from 398mW to 1000mW!!
In CE mode is the opposite, changing to 5.8 the transmission power goes from 63mW to 25mW.
The video lag and aircraft range are reduced.
Many thanks for that video!
Most welcome
Great video thanks.
I can't wait to try this!
awesome! very interesting video! i love the grading of the first shot at 10:21 how did you grade it so perfectly moody? 😍
Contrast and the right moment to shoot ( best light early in the morning )
I'll try it for sure. Nice video and new subscriber. :)
Thanks, but.. 7:20 wrong. antennas perpendicular to the drone for max range. 10:48 calibrate before every flight? even dji doesn't say that. only when needed
This was very helpful
Hi Underwater tribe! I'm surprised that 5 Ghz goes further, since 5 Ghz normally has a shorter range than 2.4 Ghz, thanks for this helpful tip!
Nathanael Horn it depends on the areas . You will have to find the best channel. Sometimes 2.4 sometimes 5 . Every time take few minutes and make sure to find the channel possible
Will do, thanks! I'm curious if this also applies in Shanghai, China, where I'm currently living... will definetly try out your trick!
It's my understanding that all things equal the 2.4GHZ signal will yield much better range (distance) than 5.8GHZ. Of course if all the 2.4GHZ channels are all busy then you will get less distance because of the interference. So if you can find an empty 2.4GHZ channel choose that one.
Good info. thanks
Thanks good help
Borat. Very Niiice.
Very informative
Nice job man, thank you! Any ideas how to avoid 100m limit in the Litchi app?
The JGhz made all the difference
He says he's in sport mode to get there faster. The title bar in the dji app shows normal GPS mode flying. Wont the logo turn to SPORT mode if that was true ?
same problem on my mavic air, poor signal if it reach 200m, sometimes 100m lost signal. tnx for this info. i will try to my mavic air also. ^_^
Oyek Creativeshots try also change to FCC mode . There are tutorials online .
Thankyou so much, i will try this. Im just in bali canggu right now and i get lag signal everywhere at 100m only!!
Hope it works out for you
And take your time watching those channels , start from the 2.4ghz . Also make sure you have no objects in between the drone and the antenna at all times
Underwater Tribe to be honest, i shot a wedding in canggu, inland abit, and still got the bad signal, not as bad as 100m, but, 200-300m max? I tried everything you said, custom wifi, 5ghz and select a good channel.... what am I missing? Cheers
Kingofthenorth did you switch to FCC ? Do you use iPhone or Android ?
Nice video. Where are you? Its beautiful there!
Tired Old Man we are in Bali , Indonesia
Love it!
Many Thanks!!!!!
Hi. My Air is stuck on 5.8G and I can not choose channel if I wan so. Is there an other way how to get around this?
Ciao.
No no, connect the drone and open the app . In the drone app on the top right there is the icone of the WiFi antenna tap on that
Hi there. How do i extend the range limit of the Mavic Air ? i want to control it while i sit inside a moving car and get the Mavic Air to follow me. But it appears to go back to base after 1Km. Can i disable this?
Luke Thomas set your return mode to controller instead of point of start .
Im now in Bali my Videos with the mavic are very bad. Over 200m its lagging. Thx for the video. I try it tomorrow how its work with 5.8ghz. Thank you.
Savi Hernandez did it work if I may ask?
nightsincitylife carpfishing it didnt work very well in nusa lembognan. I think there are to much boat antenas. But in other areas in bali it was good to 500meter. After 400-500 its beginning to loose signal.
So when flying above cities and on FCC mode. I should fly on 5.8ghz? Not 2.4ghz? Because from what I'm told 2.4ghz on FCC gives you more range.
Well , in short , the Mavic air cuts out very easily as soon as you have not a direct line from your controller to the drone. In theory 2.4ghz is better , but in reality the least crowded channel is the best .
@@Underwatertribe
I see okay, so what ya tryna say is that, if youre most probably flying at places where there's obstacles it's best to fly on 5.8ghz and 2.4ghz is more for line of sight flying?
5.8ghz should work more in WiFi congested areas , but yes , shorter range .but as you see in the video I still went 2km away
@@Underwatertribe
I'm using the DJI spark haha. I don't know how far it'll go on 5.8ghz
Forgive my curiosity, but, where do you come from ?
Switzerland
Thank you
@@Underwatertribe Svizzera Italiana?
Lmao ! Dude your accent reminds me of a movie named "Borat":) . Btw are you from Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan ??
Surinder Kakar Naice!! lol
Helpful
How do you link the remote on wifi setting?
Thank you for this video, question, if you are in a very flat area with a lot of homes, do you think that interferes with your signal....I have very bad range from my house.
JOHN WHITEHURST yes absolutely, Mavic Air range suck when there is an object between the remote and the drone .
Great, thank you for that info
thx for vid!
Does the same also work for dji mavic pro 2?
Thanks!
Ulas Aydin probably you do not need with the Pro2 as it does WiFi plus radio
Ive did sooo much research on why my signal is up to 200 meters. The problem is if you fly over houses with wifi or forests. What this guy did was find high ground where the signal isn’t interrupted by anything, so straight line. I thought my drone was defective, but it was fine. This is a great drone but fly it in areas where the drone and you are on the same line with no interference.
Welcome to Bali bro.. My first drone flight also in Bali, I tried to fly my mavic air in the crowded place in denpasar with 5,8Ghz but I just have less than 200 m distance before it starts to lagging in my phone's screen.. I didn't do the compass calibration before my first flight because the compass status is normal.. May be I should wait for a couple second to check the least busy channel as you said... Thank you anyway for your video... Greeting from Indonesia..
Dedi Rachman yes . Need to find the right channel . Try waiting a minute as I said . Also make sure that you are not going to have obstacle between you and the remote . Sometimes I find i good channel on 2.4ghz . In Sanur beach 2.4ghz was better than 5.8. Good luck
Fcc force hack your mavic air, ;)
Because CE mode masbro. Change MA to FCC first, and you will get long distance.
Great !!!!
When you do the change on dji go4, what is it you turn off and on on your phone or iPad so you can make the new change to work? My Air dont let me do this changes in manual mode.....🤬
With your air on and connected,
1.tap on the wifi icon .
2.choose custom
3. Scroll down a little
4. On the second line of numbers choose any number between 1 and 11.
Between 1-11 you will be in 2.4ghz
@@Underwatertribe thank you very much for answering quickly. So I turn off and on on wifi on my phone, correct?
No need for that. You can keep your phone on flight mode when you fly your drone
Why i cant chance those channel settings on my phantom 4 pro, it is just set to auto and it doest give me change it, it is just gray
Vilkka phantom 4 should not need that . It has got great range in automatic
@@Underwatertribe mine loses signal at 800m away from the remote...
Dude, thanx!
Will it work in Singapore if I had it channel tune?
quekgary most likely .
thanks very much my friend..cheers..
Were you in CE or FCC mode?
Byron B FCC , my drone came from USA never changed it to CE
Very nice but you want to try it in cold and wind like here in England :)
Carlo Salt haha , Happy with crazy hot and humid . :)
The range is just a matter of interfierence. Straight out of the box and with moderate intefierence in 2,4Ghz manage to accieve 800 meters of range in ec mode. In fcc at 5,8Ghz and in clean of interfierence environment 2,7 klm was a reality. And at the same time in a full in interfierence city environment in fcc mode at 5,8Ghz only a 450 meters accieved before loosing signal. So keep searching for an interfierence clean place to enjoy an extended range flight. Or install a signal booster. Thats all.
Athens ?
yeah its 2.4jigaherzt
Nice video but there's others hitting 4 thousand meters
when im out in the country of course you can fly further, ive flown 3,000 mtrs,, but you try it in suburbia ,,no good..
bocam57fe yes not good . Find the best channel in the 2.4ghz range , that will help.
But 2.4 Ghz is for longest distance.. ? Why 5.8 Ghz is better for you?
Piter Admski correct . It actually all depend on which channel is the least busy . In Bali seems to be easier to find a clean channel, but not always. So it all comes down to take a couple of minutes looking at the channels and pick the right ones. Because the distance is better on 2.4ghz, we check those first.
Please get your audio levels right. Music way too loud compared to voice.
and I am on 5.8
Nice vídeo and fantastic explanation of your research, but many Experts not agree because they are theorist slaves. The other good thing you answer nearly all the questions in polite form, that mean you are not hungry of LIKES and SUBSCRIPTIONS. Good luck.
Raul Barraza thanks for the nice comment !
1 - 11 channels. You're in FCC mode in Indonesia? =)
Umar Aziz yes , there are tutorials on RUclips to do it for both iPhone and android ! It is a must to have the machine running properly .
It's Wi-Fi no matter what you do it's going to be crappy especially if you live in a residential area DJI should have used ocusync they wouldn't be having these issues the mavic air SUCKS Because it's using Wi-Fi instead of ocusync what could have been a nice drone ended up to be a paperweight for some people i myself sent mine back and got a full refund I bought it just to mess around with in the backyard but the lagging is horrible and the signal lost warnings I own the mavic 2 Zoom talk about awesome technology it's in the mavic 2 especially the ocusync 2 unbelievable I just don't like flying in the winter that's why I bought the air for the winter and the backyard stay away from the mavic air
You bought the mavic air for winter flying? Probably you should consider changing your name then..
jigahertz
😂!! Luca Italianism hahaha
You spent 3 minutes telling us what you were going to do in a 11 minute video! Edit, edit, edit!
James Lovell lol! I agree
@@Nathan-wn5mc in order to generate revenue off a video, and we'll deserved might I add, it has to be over 10 minutes.
buy a mavic pro. that's the solution!
Too long and boring video.
...and you got it all wrong! 5 GHz has better range but does not tolerate obstacles. Concrete, leaves, metal simply isolate this high frequency more. In terms of 2.4 GHz penetration 2.4 GHz works better.
pianandrill thanks for your feedback!
It all depends where you are . In open fields like I was non of the 2.4 ghz frequency allowed to go further than 350meters without loosing signal. However , I found myself several times flying in 2.4 in other regions . Having said that either frequency when you have an object obstructing sucks. As I said in other comments , the key is to take sometime and find the best signal. Regarding the length of the video , I agree with you .
