    As my one friend used to tell me when I "lucked out" : "You live with the gods!" Glad you got it back safe. Perhaps try 5.8ghz next time .. less interference (but not as strong RC signal). I tried those supposed "range booster" reflectors on my Spark, and they were terrible .. started getting choppy wi-fi at 100m. Took them off and didn't have any more problems. Most of those cheap "range extenders" are not optimized to either 2.4 or 5.8 ghz, and they are NOT "parabolic" .. simply curved. In order to really punch out a signal, the reflector has to be parabolic and tuned to the transmit frequency (ham radio experience here). We'll watch for your next attempt. On your way back, I kept hearing Captain Kirk yelling to Scotty: "Scotty, I need MORE POWER! " "I'm givin' ya all I can, Captain!" .. ha ha. Cheers!

      +Tony Krause Surrounding interference I suppose.

  • @twin9408
    @twin9408 6 лет назад +2

    Flying around neighborhoods tends to have a lot of interference in 2.4Ghz. Before flights with the Air I set the channel mode to custom and choose a higher end channel that's not used. Helps connection stability massively at long range.

  • @douglarsen4801
    @douglarsen4801 6 лет назад +5

    Great stuff Dustin as usual. This is why I chose the Mavic Pro. I grabbed a barely used model with 2 batteries and filters for $650. The range is insane, and the Air feels just too limiting. I love the modes, and the size but honestly I can't give up the OcuSync. OcuSync makes me feel confident for those long range flights.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

      +Doug Larsen I still don't get great range with the pro in this spot. Occusync still has it's issues with interference but yes it does do better 👍

      Well I pulled the trigger on the Air. What an emotional rollercoaster! I look forward to your long range test. Hopefully its decent and not as much of a compromise. There is much to like about the Pro and Air and its a tough decision!

    I’m glad I ordered the Spark. I was torn between the two, but for a first time hobby drone owner the 4K video really means nothing. For the money and what I want it for, the Spark is the only way to go for me. Thanks for the videos, Mr. Dunnil.

  • @dronehome7605
    @dronehome7605 5 лет назад +2

    Love some of the features on this drone but I am a spark owner and just looking at the specs. The transmitter on the air has 3-4dbm more then the spark and on the rc it has 1-2 more dbm. So I just can’t justify getting it. I mean I get around 2 miles sometimes more sometimes less with the spark so I’d be spending 800$ for 3 minutes of flight time. Just can’t do it. But it’s an amazing drone and I think dji aced it as they always do. I will say if you have the spark and want an upgrade. Get mavic pro or pro 2. It’s a more powerful bigger unit. But the spark is just fun and reliable. Great reviews as always Dustin.

  • @alty68
    @alty68 6 лет назад +8

    Looks like OcuSync wouldn't hardly matter on this drone as sending it out any further would prevent it from making it home. I have now seen a few similar range tests and battery life, not range, is often the limiting factor.

    • @L3x4Pr0ne
      @L3x4Pr0ne 6 лет назад

      Ron Altman agreed on the battery. Shouldn’t need too much more “umph.” Image transmission is a part of it too, though. 1080 downlink with good range, plus added security of a solid connection is a big deal to some.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

    Great review as always Dustin. Clearly DJI still have bugs to sort out in this bird. Your Bat% stayed at 79% from 4:39 to 12:52, at which point it then tells you it's at 37%!!! No wonder you had such a close call getting it back. You could say it was wifi interference but all the other telemetry was updating correctly so to me at least, they have bugs to iron out (Maybe that was addressed in the firmware update it called for at the beginning of the flight). Either way it's a REAL BAD bug to have on your battery reporting stats. I can see that bug catching a lot of less experienced pilots out resulting in drone loss. Well handled in the heat of the moment, could tell you were getting a little concerned though lol. Keep 'em coming, good job!

    Mr Dunhill,
    I enjoy the range test videos you make. I think some people are under the impression it's all about the actual distance, going off some of the comments regarding flying within line of sight etc etc. I see these range test videos as a way of finding out the strength of the signal, therefore the effectiveness of the drone, within the legal limits of course! In built up areas or where there might be obstructions such as trees etc, a drone with a long range will have a signal with a better capability of penetrating such obstacles as trees etc. Just my opinion.
    Looking forward to your next range test video.

    This thing went further than I thought it could for a wifi drone that was amazing. The auto landing feature that tried to take over at 16:51 would be useful if you could find an open field to hover over with GPS lock in the event that it isn't going to make it back. Good to know that it wouldn't just fall out of the sky and break.

    I bought the Mavic AIR 2 months ago. And the video quality and extra features and auto modes made me go for it even though i could afford the Mavic PRO. But now (off paper) the Mavic AIR doesnt give me more than 100-200 meters in certain open areas. Tried different phones etc. My hardware is in CE mode so that might also be a contributing factor, but even then. In about 14 hrs of flight time since i bought it. Not once has it crossed about 200 mtrs without signal break up and lost video feed.
    2 Weeks ago it lost connection 50 mtrs that too flying straight up for a ROCKET styled shot. Technically that's the only direction where you wont lose signal easily. It did this all over the resort campus which is about half km wide. tried at different spots and same result. Kept antennas laterally facing, chose the least jammed Wifi channel etc etc. Same result. This was in the city outskirts. Finally i just could never get a overhead shot of the small property in the middle of the campus bec the drone would repeatedly get cut off connectivity. And DJI is the least helpful company maintaining the Chinese business style (not racist, but the whole world knows about Chinese quality) of after selling it, they give a F for you. On their forums all you'll get is one answer and by the time you can trouble shoot it with their help theres no more replies as they have newer complaints to handle.
    They just come and reply a little to each post to make it look to passing viewers that they solved your problem. They wont even help with knowledge much less actual physical help and warranty etc. Cant blame them because they are busy minting money and they have too many complaints to handle. I have nothing against the Chinese companies, some of their cheap products even work very well.

      LOL and you think cursing people out and insulting others will fix the issue you think exists.. because it seems hella unwelcoming and actually will only do the exact opposite of what you wish. also nothing wrong with flying over other people's private land, they dont own the airspace above them, that's just how the FAA is with it, considered a public highway. im also registered with the FAA and am certified.
      and what safty concerns would you have? most high end drones such as ones DJI creates have tons and tons of built in fail safes, they can self recover if they get struck in the sky, even self level if one of the props gets chopped up and stay in the air, change channels and frequencies if getting too much interference, know exactly how much power their battery has and exact positioning on the planet and they can sense the wind in any direction and adjust the thresholds and runtime estimates..
      also thats cute, 2M liability insurance.. i personally have 10 million dollar liability insurance, i never had even one event where i needed to worry about my drones, even flying over other people's property and shit, the fail safes work as promised when connections are broken or the battery has an issue, and i'm a fairly experienced drone pilot.

    Very good video Dustin, I really like the sunset but you have shown us that just because it has some extra features, it to me is not as good as the mavic pro. DJI still has some issues to work out with the mavic air.

  • @MouldyPIX

    Great test Dustin, but the view from you’re helmet cam (GoPro) made it difficult to work out the angle of the controller and the antennas. Were the antennas vertical ? In a lot of the views they looked near horizontal, which severely affects the signal strength... looking forward to part 2!

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

      I was (as much as possible) making sure they were perpendicular to the Mavic Air

    Hi Dustin....Great video as always the footage was pretty of the sunset, I wouldn't of taken my mi drone out if it had an update, I would of updated it first... I don't know DJI products that well because I haven't got one, but I will say you got some balls taking it out that far lol...Im' glad that you didn't lose it either...great video as always tho keep up the good work and have a nice day. :-)

    My Spark did the (battery signal loss) same thing and it was three feet away. Most likely inconsistent firmware issue is my guess..

    Dustin when u come back in rth instead of doing 18 mph... hold the right stick forward you will still be in return to home mode but you will be doing about 29 miles per hour it's not quite sport mode but it is a very decent speed and won't totally kill your battery

    I think if you use the parabolic reflector and start off in sport mode you should get a bit more distance. 😈 also you won’t be fighting RTH the whole time.

    Dustin, flying my Spark today I had a situation with bad signal loss when it was nearly right over my head. I finally realized that the sun was almost in line with my controller and the drone similar to how you were heading towards the sunset. Then I remembered that there is a problem satellite dishes encounter called “thermal noise” where the intense waves etc. from the sun will interfere with the signal when a satellite comes between the dish and the sun. I believe that’s what was messing me up today and I wonder if that’s what you encountered with your signal loss too?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад +1

      That does seem logical and possible. If it keeps occurring in the same conditions you may be right 👍

    Very entertaining video. What a beautiful sunset in stunning 4k video quality. And very exciting ending, landing on only 3% battery life after going out almost a mile and a half. This calls for more testing but I think you did better on your Spark range test. The wifi signal on the Air isn't nearly as good as the occu sync system on the Mavic Pro. The Air only looks safe out to about 2500 feet. Thanks for taking a such a risk, after the second time it asked to do a RTH I would have given up and let it come home.

    • @DustinDunnill

      Everyone seems to be forgetting I'm flying in high interference residential area in this test. The spark was in the boonies away from interference. I'll be doing the same for the air 👍. Also the update is apparently supposed to fix some issues I was having. Will test again.

    • @RonaldBrown59
      @RonaldBrown59 6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the correction. I hope you have better luck in the boonies, especially with the new update.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад +1

      Correct. I did not have a fast enough card in so it defaulted to the lower res. I didn't see that on my small phone screen and produced the whole video in 4K not knowing it was 1080 60. Looks good though

    I am a little leery of the "enhanced Wi-Fi this bird uses. I fly a lot of park areas where there is all kind of Wi-Fi interference. I have a P3A and it does not seem to bother it much but I can't bring myself to put full trust in a unit that runs on Wi-Fi in the areas I fly in. I am looking forward to your test with the antenna boosters. Also do you think there was a glitch in the software causing the faulty battery reading? That could be as dangerous as the bad Wi-Fi connection. Thanks for sharing and fly safe.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

      +dheller777 I'm thinking it was evening and everyone is using WiFi more at home didn't seem to have any glitching in my short range test in first flight test. Perhaps there is a specific data stream specific to the battery voltage that was getting interference. I'll try again in 5.8 and or with the dish extenders

    you use a lot more power from the drone in a hover position than you would flying i round i believe because if im flying around i get more time out of the battery than just hovering plus when im going long distances i use sport mode like you did to get it back.But very close call man lol you were very close to crashing but great video. i have spark and mavic pro but wanting the mavic air for the better sensors

    great review Dustin and what I was expecting with the Mavic Air's wifi range. the video is not smooth after 2000 feet which for me is a fail. the Mavic pro is far better for range and flight time.
    You mavic air batteries wont last very long either flying them that low
    I want to be able to fly that far out and further and not put up with the choppy laggy video of wifi

  • @pvitale
    @pvitale 6 лет назад +1

    That was way to close. One of my first flights with my mavic pro I had to crash land because of the wind which I did not know played such a big part. This gave me flashbacks! LOL

    While that was very close, it could have potentially kept going well past 0% for a little while. Not good on the battery cells but still.

    Great videos Dustin .. TY .. I have a simple question .. which phone(s) or Apple product do you find works best with the Mavic Air or Pro? TY
    One observation .. have you tried adjusting your channel manually instead of using auto?

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  5 лет назад

      I only have an iPad air 2 and it works quite flawlessly. You may know my personal phone is Android. Android has gotten much better since my first tests with Mavic Pro 1 but is never as stable as apple likely due to Android fragmentation (so many devices). I sometimes look at the wifi graph but it seems to always auto choose the channel with least interference. Of coarse that could change quickly for the craft once it's out a few hundred feet.

    • @DustinDunnill
      @DustinDunnill  6 лет назад

      Wow, yes. Looks like you are correct! My SD card was too slow so it defaulted to 1080/60 according to the screen. I'll have to change the title 👍. I have some extreme 4k SD cards on the way. Thanks for noticing that.

    • @didactylos4diddy474
      @didactylos4diddy474 6 лет назад +1

      Yep. I should have noticed that and 1080p does reduce the power drain but even so cutting the recording should have given a few more % of battery life.
      Wouldn't have been as pretty though
