You should test your Mavic after updating its firmware. Rumor goes that Mavics produced after april 2017 get fixed 60fps mode with version 1.04. My drone is from 2017 july and I updated it. Weather has been bad but I did run around with the drone indoors shooting at 60 and did no longer notice that weird aliasing problem ;) Theres also many videos on youtube indicating that the problem has been fixed for the lucky owners of newer Mavics.
satikass A few other people have mentioned that, and I went out to test the theory. There’s no difference for me, 60 is still bad news for my Mavic Pro.
Regarding the Mavic Pro thumb stick protectors that are shown at 6:10. I've got an MP but I flip those over the other way. I was thinking that bar was for screen protection. If you look under the bar, you'll see that it's recessed where the screen is. Not a big deal, but that's what I was thinking.

Great review and video Ed. You are right - that's a loud drone. Thought DJI would have incorporated the low noise propellers they developed for the Mavic Pro on the Mavic Air. Other than that looks like DJI has got a winner.
Such a great review, I would have to say a very accurate comparison. I just purchased the Mavic Air and started a channel to showcase the Australian landscape, after some more use I’ll also do a review on the Mavic Air from my personal experience.

Another great video. At this point I'm still happy with the portability of my Mavic Pro and I think if I did get another drone it would be in the opposite direction - a bigger drone with higher quality. If I were in the market for a fold-able drone right now though - this would be a tougher choice.

May I ask are you seeing any warping on the horizon when you fly.... the reason is that some users like me are seeing this when you circle the aircraft whilst the horizon is high in the video.... I have just noticed what could be this in yours at about 11:35 when you start to tun the camera left, the horizon looks like it starts to warp to the right of centre on the horizon... more and more users are seeing this and I wondered if you had seen more of it... its more evident on a very flat horizon
Just had the first flight with mine, very extremely happy with it. But upgrading the firmware was hell, I started trying to update it as a 30year old and ended up at the end looking like Old Rose in Titanic. But watching it fly around perfectly with the wind blowing though my long white hair was worth it
Great Video - Trying to decide between the Spark vs Mavic Air. I had the spark and crashed it while shooting because of no rear sensors. I shoot mainly vacation videos, how annoying is the sound? The spark wasn't too bad at all. No one paid any attention to me, but I'm concerned about this attracting too much attention. Can you compare sound between the Spark and Mavic Air?

Not a bad video but I clicked on it because I just bought a new mavick air and I have never flown before and I wanted to know step by step how to set it up after you unbox it, how to put in the micro SD card, where it goes, how to do the compus calibration etc.

I debated between this and the Mavic Pro, ended up ordering the Air in Red, now that I've seen how loud this is, I am afraid I may have made the wrong choice, I Hope DJI comes up with some quieter props like the Platinum.
Just got mine and one thing that kind of freak me out a bit. When I was holding it by the body and turned on, the props moved a bit and I thought - what if the mavic went on, for some weird reason, I would have my fingers cut for sure. They are in props way when turning it on. I understand it is very unlikely to happen, but it did freak me out when they moved.

Thanks for the in depth tutorial. Just tried my first flight with heart thumping against my chest. It took off and landed safely but there was continuous beeping sound from the RC or my mobile device I don't know exactly where it came from but is it normal to have continuous beeping?

I have a problem with my mavic air. Please help. When I shoot in 4K with 30fps when I import the videos all the footage is in slow motion. How can I get normal footage in 4K. I am so excited but now frustrated as I tried everything but all my footage is in slow motion. Please help. Please advise how to adjust settings to shoot in 4K in normal mode.
I have had bad experiences flying Mavic Air. My first MA suffered minor crash after losing contact with the controller (on the 3rd day)....IMU and accelerators errors (still with DJI service centre after I sent back 3 weeks ago). The second MA without any crash.....could not fly because of ESC errors.....also sent back to the seller (after only 2 days with me)

Ben Thunder you haven’t made a mistake at all, your MPP has longer range, longer flight time and is much quieter. It’s essentially an upgraded Mavic Air :)
Absolutely no mistake at all. I’ve had the mavic for little over a year and can’t speak high enough about it. I am very recreational in regards to level of use but it has far exceeded my expectations. I’ve actually been able to carry with me easily on a dirt bike trip and never had any issues.

Question, as far as phone dji app crashing, I see it often on RUclips. Is this an automatic pro towards the Mavic Pro/Platinum because of the LCD screen that allows you to still keep an eye on your drone? I'm new an considering Pro an Air. If the app crashes with the air, what happens to the drone, does it just hoover until app comes back up? Thank you in advance?
So the mavic pro has reached end of life according to DJI and the price has gone down to $799. With the air being $799 which one would you choose if you didn't have a drone and wanted to spend $799?
How does the shoulder bag size compare to the dji bag for the mavic pro? It lookss similar or bigger in the video. Wondering if the flymore combo will be bigger in size to carry over the flymore combo of mavic pro. I see the case for the drone adds bulk to it whereas the mavic pro goes naked into the dji bag.
The Mavic Pro Fly More bag is more like a cube whereas the Air bag is more like a brick in shape...if that makes any sense. I think they both take up the same amount of space in that way. By the way, I don't use the small case when I'm using the bag. The Air fits snuggly in without it, so honestly it feels pretty much exactly the same, just a slightly different shape.
Ed I would like to ask you a question. I hear your drone say “Take Off” but mind does not do that. Is there some setting that needs changed? Thanks in advance!
Hi, that's based off of your phone or display device volume. If you've turned the volume down on your phone that you're using as a display device with the controller, you won't get audible notifications like that.
They're both pretty equal video-wise, but I think the Mavic Pro is easier to control for finer movements. The Mavic Air seems to have snappier yaw that takes more stick to engage, whereas the Pro turns soooo much more smoothly. That could also be settings that need to be tweaked, but I'm talking right out of the box. But the Air is great in its own way of course.
Thanks Ed; concise and helpful tutorial on this new drone. As there is no screen on the controller, DJI are forcing the buyer to use a phone or tablet and as DJI are biased towards Apple, does this mean us Android owners need to purchase an iPhone or iPad? Mike in Oz
Hi Mike, no that shouldn't be the case. There are many examples of Android phones working with DJI products...though sometimes there has been app crashing and such. But I don't think an Apple device is necessary.

The Mavic Pro is still the way to go. I had mine for one year, with no complaints. It’s great companion with my Inspire Pro.

have they fixed the +1 sharpness ? the footage seems to be much better on normal than the pro's normal ?

No mistake at all. This is a noisy Spark Pro (aka MAVARK)...
Unless you want a more compact/cheaper drone, no you've made the right choice.

Does an iPad Mini fit in the Mavic Air controller as it does in the Mavic Pro controller?

They're both pretty equal video-wise, but I think the Mavic Pro is easier to control for finer movements. The Mavic Air seems to have snappier yaw that takes more stick to engage, whereas the Pro turns soooo much more smoothly. That could also be settings that need to be tweaked, but I'm talking right out of the box. But the Air is great in its own way of course.
Thanks Ed; concise and helpful tutorial on this new drone. As there is no screen on the controller, DJI are forcing the buyer to use a phone or tablet and as DJI are biased towards Apple, does this mean us Android owners need to purchase an iPhone or iPad?

Hi Mike, no that shouldn't be the case. There are many examples of Android phones working with DJI products...though sometimes there has been app crashing and such. But I don't think an Apple device is necessary.
