Warren, I’ve been following your videos for about a year now and let me tell you that you are definitely teaching a young guy in the business a lot thank you for going out of your way to record these type of repairs.
Your customers really are the lucky ones. You're very very good with all brands and projects. There's no way any dealer would go as "above and beyond" as you do. Great video, and I'm really happy you're continuing to make them!
Excellant video. Audio was perfect - diagnosis procedure was "spot on". You got-er torn down without much trouble - I understood everything you said. 👍
I am a retired mechanic from Haggisland, and watch your videos....you are a very clever guy i have gotta say...love your down to earth commentary....keep it going, it reminds of all the shit i had to go through, on busses artics and allsorts in all weathers.
Just when you think you've seen it all, something will crop up that's unexpected. I do electronics repair, but these videos help me. It's not the application, but that logical troubleshooting process that Warren does so well.
Hey Warren, I know you get discouraged from time to time with some of the commentors but please don't give up. I love your stuff and this was a great video.
Thats what our local deere dealer uses, an expensive parts cannon. They have run off all the good ones and hire 20 year olds with no experience. They can only do what the computer tells them. Ask them about a 4440 and they look at you like your speaking Greek.
Great video Warren Weiner dogs look alittle sad today lol. " When you eliminate all the other possibilities, only the truth (or in this case the real problem) remains". Thanks for the video!
Warren, your diagnostic abilities are incredible! This is why I think your videos are great! Would be interesting to see you and JayPaydirt try to figure out his new Peterbilt and why it has low oil pressure? It was a California reject due to emissions non-compliance.
Warren, Good call on Not mixing Antifreeze. Tends to turn acidic and Gel up plugging coolant passages and wrecking havoc on the cooling system and water pump seals
Seen that happen (45 years ago), with a Michigan shovel sliding down a hill, the four wheels had almost no grip and slipping/sliding. At the bottom of the hill, there was gravel. So the front wheels had suddenly full grip and a big bang in the right front hub was the result. The shaft was twisted and snapped like a match. Like your channel by the way.
If the operator doesn't own the machine, he doesn't really care about it ... sad, but that's just the truth. You really shouldn't be driving on paved roads with the MFWD switched on, not to mention, dumping the clutch on such surfaces. It's hell on the driveline. Awesome video, I learned something new !
Excellent video it may of had happen to it what one of my customers did to his 8400 John Deere tractor they were pushing on a stuck tractor trailer out in the field and when it got the weight of the trailer on the front axle it tore the whole front axle up and broke the king pins also. Make sure that the king pin bearings are good most of the time they are all hammered out especially when it has the big rack of weights up front there too.
Whoever owns that tractor takes really good care of it. That’s a slick 8200. Especially for its age, and I can’t believe I’m saying that because it wasn’t that long ago seems like that I owned an 8400. But I did trade it off 15 years ago 🤣
That stub shaft being twisted that bad would in my book warrant an inspection of the other side it could have been stressed as well.. great job Warren..
Agree Doug. You could see the amount of torque that had cracked the shaft from the twist in the spline when Warren removed it. Such a short axle would need a huge amount of torque to twist and break so that suggests metal fatigue. You'd hope John Deere will take the broken shaft and examine it to establish a reason for the failure, and supply a replacement free!
@@davidholder3207 The 8200 was made from 1995 to 1999. Tractor is at least 22 years old. How long should Deere be responsible for shafts!?!?! To me he has gotten good life out of that. Try to get warranty on a 22 yo car or truck cv shaft.
@@davidholder3207 You'd be broke, too. Those 8000 series tractors are pretty much bullet proof. They eventually break down. In the grand scheme of things, this is a small potatoes break down.
Having found this obvious damage in the hub do you have any concerns about, what to me, appeared to be really glittery oil that you drained from the Front diff? Also what about the condition and oil in the right front wheel?
Must been a realy heavy load on that driveshaft to broke it. Maybe some weeknes in the matrial in that shaft. But hit the ground with spinning wheel on this heavy tractor could do this. Have a good day Warren, always nice to look ar your videos.
Worked on bombardier track machines, 110 Nodwells. Every axle that ever broke there was never a load on the machine when it broke. At least the ones i were in when it happened. Never with a load or in muskeg mud etc. Nice flat ground is when it happened. Stress...
Another awesome video. I'm guessing your were relived not to have to split the big donk in to. At least your standing straight up. I love these findings.
Good diagnostic work there Warren 👍, my experience of broken drive shafts as you have there are overloading front axle, hard working conditions, tyre size mismatch, fatigue material. You’re front axle hasn’t been overloaded as it doesn’t have front linkage, you’d think that the operator could have explained when it happened and what he was doing, obviously they didn’t try the front diff lock either? Well done that man, thanks for the video as always Regards , Luke 🇬🇧🔧
Tgank You Warren. I remember watching a little while ago you did a JD steering knuckles. Well. The company I work for, has got 4 JD 6610r. Each knuckle joint has hone so far that the pins are two thirds. And the housing is completely oval. So complete new axles are required. Ouch.....
Wheel hop when your pulling something stuck in mud, the tractor on good ground getting some wheel hop with those nice tires with load the shit out of the entire drive line..
Hey warren i salute you sir you are incredible simpley the best i dont know how you do it ? And by your self ! These 55 series mechenical 4 w drive and computers technology just coming out when i changed careers ? Amazing to where it went what it takes to fix em i dont kno how you do it 7 days a week not enough time during harvest but you get it done ? You casually say split it in half like no big deal ? Remarkable ! Sad sad day when you hang up your wrenche thank ypu for the education ? I would like to take a ride and visit you if i can find you ??
That took some beans to twist that shaft off like that, that is a fact. Kinda wonder if he heard it let go, or felt it in the steering...but this is hydraulic steering so probably not. Beats the heck out of having to split the tractor tho!. Seen the right rears back on the old Blue Ford, that has to be a good sign!
Not sure what they were using this on, but when watching the first thing I thought of when it was a hub problem was it was power hopping and hooked up. Been through quite a few muddy harvests of processing tomotoes, and its not an enjoyable thing to do, but it has to be done. If they don't want to fix it, you are more than welcomed to haul that 8000 to my place to get rid of it and I will even pay the trucking. They are great tractors and I prefer red paint.
Hey man did you do any schooling to be a heavy equipment mechanic? And do you think it helped you get where you are now? Thank you and awesome content sir👍
Power braking at the truck and tractor show, or weak metals joined in critical places, who knows. You finding the problem is commendable, some people would replace parts before discovering problems.
Not sure if its the case with that tractor or any over there but in the UK when on the road in 2wd when braking tractor engages 4wd to give you engine braking on all wheels, I have known drive lines to shear due to fact the fronts are normally spinning slightly faster so when the 4wd comes on you get a snatching, quite often when you come to a stop and let off the brakes the front wheels will jump back as the gearbox is wound up. We had a Case mx150 once that sheared the main drive like this and lost all drive. power brakes, hydraulic steering etc on a steep hill towing a low loader with a digger on and a large chalk spreader behind as well, needless to say I think the driver needed new underwear when it finally came to a stop but thankfully didn't cause an accident. Just a thought.
i was told only use 4wd when needed & never ever on pavement. drove many of these 8200 mostly subsoiling but one on the 7200 gallon triple axle liquid manure tank spreader full load down hill on gravel roads pushed this tractor around like a toy. drive slow or jackknife & the tank spreader has hydraulic breaks plugged into tractor remote it's a must have must use was the only time i did'nt feel safe in a jd8200

Well ive spun a drive line a few times but when i was doing it .... rock crawling. Yea .... i abused it. But I did that full well of knowing what was going to happen.
I'm wondering how the shaft on the other axle looks.. torque on both of them should always be equal.. maybe it's got a bit of a twist to it too and hasn't let go yet or the one that broke wasn't tempered properly?
Saw this a few times (on 580 backhoes) when I was a Case tech, people would leave the transfer case engaged on pavement and turning the steering to the lock, it would take a while to happen but rental equipment will always find those people that can ruin a ball bearing with a rubber hammer. As just an observation, I was looking around your shop during various frames when it dawned on me just how much you have invested in your operation, your trucks, tools and support equipment dollar wise is a bit staggering, all mechanics of course share an investment in themselves but I just was overwhelmed by just how much you have invested, let alone your seeming endless energy and ambition to do the job right.
