    I got a tour of the Porsche factory. In the engine assembly room, the assembled engine went straight to the dyno and went to full throttle, full load the second it fired. Beautiful music!

      I build VW engines in the shadow of tallest I-5 summit, and never lost an "new" engine. Except for better metallurgy, crank counterweights, and dual carbs, they were the same. They had guided bombs, before we had a rocket. Thank God Adolf didn't listen to his advisors!

    Amen, Warren. Most techs (mechanical, electrical, computer, etc) are just parts changers. It’s rare that anyone takes the time to find the root cause.

      I’ve always preached to my son that it’s great to know what part need replaced/repaired, but it’s better to know why and how. He’s gonna be a hell of an AG tech one day soon.

      The learning can get expensive though! But to me, I wouldn't do it any other way. Knowledge is something no one can ever take from you.

      @@JustMike2791 I've been going to school of hard knocks for 40 years now ,I farm and I have my share of bills. In this case and in following Warren this lesson is in my opinion crazy expensive, That motor may be FUBAR, I wouldn't be surprised if Warrens repair bill exceeds $30,000, Head alone may cost $30,000. But I'm positive that when he done they'll have a good runner, How would you like that expense because dealer mechanic just fixed some issues and not what cause the issues, Hind sight 20/20

      Never look around to see what’s causing the issue in the first place..
      Some serious dollars have been spent on this JD and it’s still costing huge costs through repairs that most likely were there before
      Warren is in my opinion 1 class mechanic.
      Even if he’s detaching the quick hitch on the Deere 😛😂

    Awesome stuff, glad you mentioned it was going to get rebuilt, when I was still learning to be an ag mechanic, was called out to a farmer with a Massey Ferguson wheeled excavator (UK), wouldnt start. Took the air filter out and it was all melted, they'd been burning brush and using it to top then bonfire up, no compression.
    Farmer was in a hurry to get it backup and running, took the sump off, rods and pistons out, large screw driver, hammered the liners out, new ones in from the bottom, new pistons and rings, serious bush fix!

    Warren, I had this exact same problem this spring on a 9620 wheel tractor. Customer had problem for 3 years. Customer and other dealer had Put two turbos on it, one manifold. Other mechanics never once checked components over. I went out to unit and checked few things on it. Checked boost pressure zero. Looked over components and found cooler split just the same way. Hydraulic tank was melted as well. Installed new cooler and engine still seemed to smoke and knock. Found that aluminum plug had started leaking rail pressure right into the intake manifold. Drilled and tapped cylinder head was good to go.

      Hey Warren up here in Canada those intercoolers are like 7600 bucks. My customer had found a cheaper one down in the states, aftermarket actually. If your interested I can find that information out for you. Had to extend inlet side pipe of cooler for aftermarket cooler to fit but works great.

    Hi Warren I'm a John Deere Tec in firebaugh CA Great videos man . Great find on the inner cooler. When you pull that engine out you dont have to take the good off.You can stand it straight up and tie a rope from the top to the bottom of the tractor. Them hoods are a pain in the ass getting them off and on. Keep up the great work.

    My MYMC, back when he was a mere E7 had some sage advise. That in us all were three donkeys--one dumb, one wise, and one Jack. Once you got one out and loose, you could just get on with your day with that behind you.
    You are a good and deserving man, Warren, and worthy of the honors and gratitude other good men have to share.

    Sorry to be thick Warren, wouldn't a cracked intercooler result in boost pressure reduction and lower fuelling. I can't quite see how this alone would cook the thing. If the engine got more fuel than air, which shouldn't be possible, wouldn't it just belch out black smoke. As I say, sorry to to be thick. Glad you got back to civilisation Warren.

    Parts changers and casual "mechanics" will never fell the endorphins released by finding the REAL cause. Congratulations Warren, I know the feeling, and there's nothing like it. Being thorough has a price, and a pay-off. I'm retired, so keep up the good work. Charge appropriately, your in rarefied company!

    Great to watch you think through and diagnose a problem. I've always thought even though folks may share the same job title, don't assume they are knowledgeable or always know what they are doing. How many techniancs or mechanics care to understand or can truly understand the theory of operations of most things they work on? In this time where people are supposedly smarter it's always great to see someone who really understands the ins and outs of their chosen field. There's nothing that can take the place of God given smarts of course but training and experience can at least get you pretty darn close.
    The videos you share give me a better appreciation for the state of California. You show some pretty cool places.

    Sir, I'm an old maintenance supervisor from the plastics industry, its not that it caught on fire, but what caused the fire in the first place? You Sir, in my humble opinion are a dam fine mechanic, good job!

      If you are talking about the soot on the right side of the engine, that isn't from a fire. The exhaust gas temperatures where running high for a long time warping and cracking the exhaust manifold. This caused exhaust leaks at the manifold to head joints, and at the cracks.

    None of use are perfect. Only a few youtubers might edit out their mistakes, so you don't see them. I'm glad you included it. Some of the more 'perfect' ones, probably wouldn't have looked far enough into the problems with the tractor to find the broken inter-cooler.

    Over fueling and under boost equals hot exhaust and washing the cylinders. Great find Warren. Look for the obvious. That's what I do. The dealer should have pressure tested everything!!!! Can't believe there wasn't a code for low boost pressure. Thanks Warren. P.S. Make sure the driver removes the plugs or they will remove themselves. LOL!!!!

    I used to be a mechanic just like that. I've always found it fun to try to figure out what the problem is. I worked on pretty much anything from little Honda GX270 engines to big diesels. I work in IT now and I miss working with my hands, but I do enjoy sitting in a warm office during winter. I may start doing small side jobs in the future just for fun.

    Well, you say sometimes a guy gets lucky, I say experience and knowledge makes you lucky ! and yes, i used to rebuild Cat motors and the guy who taught me always put the machine to hard work after a rebuild, we never had a problem,. enjoy your downtime with the dogs and family

    Great find. I didn't know a charge air cooler could cause a overheat problem like that, but it does make sense.

    Hey Warren, the Milwaukee tool warranty sucks and it is very hard to get things repaired or replaced. I have a Milwaukee store and service center near me and I have had terrible service. If you are having issues with batteries I have a easy solution as long as your battery case is not all broken. I buy brand new batteries and take them apart removing the guts and I place the guts from my old batteries in the new batteries cases and then I return them for a refund.

    I learned about dampeners when Iveco engines in NH choppers kept breaking cranks at low hours - changed cranks but not the dampener and the new crank would break quickly. This cost NH the chopper business at one large dealer in CA that is now a Claas powerhouse. Glad you spotted the crack in the CAC - little things mean a lot..

      The ONLY things that sounds gooder than that tractor, is 3408 Cat with straight pipes, applying the jake brake on the high setting, while coming off the mountain fully loaded!

    Guess you didn’t win a jackpot in Reno! Great diagnosis on the engine, looking forward to the tear-down.
    Had a Renault in high school, bought it off a guy and it was overheating 🥵, put new radiator etc, finally dad looked at it and said I bet the timing is off. Reset timing and drove it for years!

    I recommend getting or building a charge air test set up. Makes life so much easier finding boost leaks

      Deere’s don’t have a boost gauge and I think this tractor is too old still to have a computer plug in for live data. I believe that started on the 30 series but I might be wrong. The computer would know it so at most it could throw the stop light. Not too sure on this big ones

      @@2nickles647 Presuming the operator cared about the machine enough to pay attention to it, AND presuming that the gauge is functioning properly. Those gauges, at least in the trucking industry, frequently are inoperable.

    Good catch, had a simular problem with a crab steer Scandia engine low hours, mechanical pump, split gasket on intake line off low boost pressure, just starved for air ran too darn hot. Assume it was missed when engine was rebuilt. Old cat mechanic told me when I was a kid to run the snot out of a reman engine, best way to break one in.

    IF they rebuilt an engine & DIDN'T replace the aircharge, I'd be very surprised. When my logging truck had the engine rebuilt, they insisted upon a new air intercooler, a new turbo, as well as new radiator, or they WOULDN'T stand behind the warranty.

    Another good video. I was confused about what you were doing with the quick hitch for a bit there , thought maybe you were seeing something that wasn't coming across on the video. I was in hopes of seeing it loaded by the end of the video but oh well. At the 20 minute mark I could see something that looked like a crack on the quick hitch. If you would be so kind as to look at it there it might be helpful. Anyway , see you next time.

    I would think the ecm would let you know you had low boost pressure before it burnt the manifold off. with a gauge you can notice a leak to a certain degree , nice work.

      Mobile mechanics like Warren are a special breed! They work LONG hours, & usually at least 6 days a week. I know from experience. When I hauled logs, the truck owner was a mobile mechanic. He was leaving his house as I was picking up the truck in the mornings, & would return home after I had dropped the truck off for the night.

    I'm guessing this isn't a candidate for on-sight engine R&R ?
    (Other 2/3) Exhaust, turbo, intercooler, radiator- then count whatever
    the "main" problem is, plus your labor/svce call. Holy crap!
    That Viewer/Friend is amazing- gifted you 2 new impacts!
    Now- tie a shoelace on each one, wrap round handle.
    Next time you must climb with tool- TIE IT TO YOU.

    Had a similar issue with Cummins KTA 50 marine engines. Exhaust temperature raises dramatically when the hose from turbo to inlet manifold leaks or blows off

      SHOULD have, provided the operator gave 2 fu@ks about the machine that feeds him! We have truck driver at work that don't care enough to stop & check things like that out. I know I've passed a few that just keep on trucking until it finally sh!ts the bed, & forces them to stop.

    A tool that works great for finding cac leaks is a smoke machine. Redline makes one that is higher pressure for cac systems. I use one all the time and it really simplifies diagnosis

    I would check the reading from the boost pressure sensor has not stuck reading full boost with low boost pressure the ecm should have adjusted the fuelling down in line with boost pressure......so its fuelling for high boost with low boost thats probably why its chucking a ton of smoke now

    Hi Warren,
    You've done a lot to teach me about mechanical things and I'd like to reciprocate on something that I was clueless to until ~ 2 years ago. I learned through a lot of research that the vast majority of celebrities and politicians (not just the United States, but whole Earth) are biological inverts. You have to be careful about what you say in this "free" country of ours or they'll pull your comments. I won't use the language and I don't think that I have to, you're sharp enough to figure it out. This is the group behind this scamdemic as well.

    Damn Warren, I walked away from the tv just in time to hear you start up a P-51’s Packard V-1650 Merlin engine. I had to come running back only to see that it was the JD....😂
