- Join me for a hike along the Royal Creek to Royal Lake on July 30, 2020.
This hike starts at the Dungeness River trailhead, just outside Olympic National Park, and then goes into the park. The first mile or so follows the Dungeness River, then follows the Royal Creek up to the Royal Lake. The starting elevation is about 2,500’ and the lake is about 5,100’. The hike is an out and back, total 14.4 miles. If I had more time I could have added another .8 and climbed into the Upper Basin.
The weather was sunny and clear and was a perfect day for hiking. There were plenty of wildflowers- especially Tiger Lilies! One new flower I noticed was the White Bog-orchid.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate all your comments and thank you for subscribing!

One day I'll be able to hike this many miles. Beautiful, I love the peninsula! Liking all your videos, can't wait to see more!
Hi Lori! Thanks for watching and saying hello! I really appreciate your support and comments! We started hiking a few years ago, just keep going and the miles will add up! I love the peninsula too! 💕💕
Very beautiful and inspiring 😊 Thx for the hike 👍

Beautiful hike! Amazing river flows, trail along the creek, to a wonderful valley and spectacular lake. Such a great day for the trek. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend 😀👍
Thank you! You too! It’s always wonderful to have sunny weather! Thanks for stopping by - I appreciate hearing from you! 🌞🌞🌞
23.175 KM that is quite a hike for a day. The wild flowers are amazing and I am glad that you name them Jennifer. Loved the lush vegetation. Your brave eating as you walk, we usually sit somewhere and enjoy our lunch whilst enjoying the ambience. Pretty lake jennifer. Look forward to seeing you get up to the upper basin and more wildflowers. A beautiful hiking trail, thank you for taking us along.
Hello- thanks again for stopping by- nice to chat with you. That day I thought it was fun to keep walking, since I was going pretty far. I agree, if I have a friend along it is fun to stop and enjoy the moment 😊 It’s fun to learn new flowers and plants- such beauty in nature 😊😊
💙🐠🤿🇦🇺Dan, thanks for the walk

Thanks so much! I always enjoy hearing from you, my friends in Quebec! Merci!
14.4 miles ? Wow ! What a hike !! Beautiful !
Hi Kim! Yes... it was one of my biggest mileage days recently! You would really enjoy the river there.... it’s just a long way to get over to the Peninsula! 😊
This is so cool! Thanks for making this. Gonna hike this in the labour day weekend.
That’s great! I hope you have a wonderful time!! 👍👍
Such this is Beautiful natural and great view. Always support you my friend. Have a great day

Wow, the view of the lake and the mountain is magnificent. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day! 👍👍
Very scenic trail ..I like it. I never eat on the move... I am never in a hurry unless i am running out of daylight and I had no intention of doing an overnight...LOL
Haha! I know! I usually like to stop, and along this trail there are lots of great spots by the creek! The area is very popular and requires permits for overnight - maybe I’ll be able to get one next year!
wonderful landscape !
Thank you friend! Thanks for stopping by and saying hello! Have a great day! 🌻🌻🌻
Hello Jennifer m 14,4 mile hike wow great job my friend. Beautiful hiking place I enjoyed watching/ Gosia
Hello Gosia! Thank you for watching and saying hello! 😊 Great to hear from you 😊 The wildflowers and river made it an enjoyable hike! Have a happy day ! 🌻🌻🌻
I’m very much enjoying your videos. I particularly like the plant/flower identification. 🙂
Hi MelanieMint! Thanks for stopping by- I’m happy that you are enjoying the videos and that you like the plant/ flower identification 😊😊 I’ve been learning new plants and flowers each year, I think it makes the hiking trails even more interesting! Thanks for sharing hello! Do you make videos?
Jennifer Lupine Hi, I don’t make videos (at least not yet). 😄 I live here in the Pacific NW, so I’m getting hiking route ideas. My sister and I hike/backpack, and this one here in Olympic NP looks lovely. Plus, I also enjoy the wildflowers, avalanche lilies being my favorite. 🙂
@@melaniemint7757 That sounds great! I hope you can start making videos too, if you like 😊 Do you have favorite places to see the avalanche lilies? I’m going to try to plan some wildflower expeditions next year! That’s awesome that you hike and backpack with your sister! Do you know how to get the permits? I think that is sometimes the biggest hurdle. Once you have the permits, the rest almost takes care of itself. Let me know when you start making videos and I’ll subscribe to your channel. It’s really a great community of hikers and friends on RUclips.
We mostly hike/backpack around Mount St Helens area, but years ago we did an Olympic NP day hike (somewhere near Port Angeles) and nearly the whole hike it was a awash in wildflowers, lots of avalanche lilies in places! Just stunning! This season we’re planning on going to more places in Olympic NP (starting at the Staircase Ranger Station in the SE) and are looking into starting to explore Mt Rainier (southern side, since we’re coming from Portland).
- Thanks, yes, I’ve been researching the new permit system (for Olympic NP), and it seems almost easier than before...but we’ll see how it goes. 🙂
- i’m now contemplating doing an experimental video of an upcoming day hike and seeing how that goes! 😄 I’ll just use my iPhone, nothing fancy. If it comes out reasonable, I’ll create a little hiking-themed channel and put it up (I’ll let you know if that happens, and you can give me notes). 😄
- Happy hiking! 🙂
@@melaniemint7757 Sounds great! I mostly use my iPhone too! It works great, clear video, and not a lot of extra weight. My tip would be to take a few short clips, as opposed to longer clips, and then combine- it seems like it works for me, less editing. I use iMovie to edit. I tired a few times for practice before I uploaded a video, it’s all fun! Sure, let me know if you have any questions... I’m just a beginner too- there are lots of people with experience sharing tips on filming and editing .... I’m looking forward to supporting your channel!
Nice hiking along the creek and the sounds of the water is refreshing I should say during summer hikes. We would always have a bite to two without stopping. But nowadays, we take extra steps to stop and wash and clean to eat our foods. Happy trails and have a great weekend, Jennifer!! Safe!
Yes, I know what you mean about being careful. One nice thing is that every hiker on the trail that day was polite and wearing a face covering and turning aside, though still saying hello. Hikers are a really great community of people! 🥾🥾 👍👍
Absolutely beautiful there. You have such wonderful places to hike. That water is captivating. Nice idea, turning the backpack around...I’ll try that. I think you invented it. You should patent the method...🤣✌️ Well done. Hope all is well with you and your family. Crow✌️
Hi Crow! Yes, all is well here! I think you’ll like snacking as you go, just not where there are roots and rocks! Everything is so handy! 🤣😂 Great to chat with you you - hope your having a great summer! 👍👍
That lake was beautiful to see! From all of your videos I think I would really enjoy hiking out in Wa State. This trail looked like one I think I would really enjoy! Truly beautiful out west!
Thanks! I’m sure that you will love it! It’s really special when we get sunny skies - quite often it is rainy and misty, which is cool in its own way, makes it moody. Really, our whole country is so big and beautiful with so much variety! With Covid I appreciate getting outside even more! 👍👍
Beautiful hike Jenifer ! How about that lake wow ! Thanks for taking us along
Thanks so much - great to hear from you! It’s pretty nice here when we get a sunny day! 🌞🌞🌞
Hi, we love your knowledge and plants identification notes. We like learning about plants especially those we can forage and add to our meals. We are quite opposite when it comes to eating on the trail. Food and snacks are great excuse to sit down and take break.. we need lots of breaks lol at least until our fitness level gets better :-) have a great day friends 😀
Yes, I know what you mean about resting! I was trying to get in a few miles so was being a bit funny! 🤣😂 over here this is a great time for foraging berries- I think you guys have blackberries too! They are just ripe now for the next week or so- do you have wild blackberries near you? We pick extra and put them in the freezer. I am really enjoying your channel, and going to catch up on your Wild Atlantic Way trip. I was a single mom for a few years - hard work, but you’re doing great! I’m really happy to meet you 😊😊
Great vid and another fun hike. Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Dan! Great to hear from you - it felt great to get outside on a sunny day! 👍👍
Hello Friend how are you?. How beautiful the olympic national park. I really liked all that forest. It is sure full of wildlife to record and photograph. A great video friend. Thank you for bringing us such nautical places, it is much needed on RUclips. I send you a huge greeting and have a good end to the day.
Hello- thanks so much for stopping by and watching! I really appreciate your support and kind words. It’s a lovely trail and the creek is beautiful music. Greetings to you and also I wish you peace as well. 🌞🌞🌞
Beautiful landscape
Thank you! Have a great day! 🌞🌞
Very nice, thanks for the look.
Hi- how are you in Thailand?
Great hike. Ambitious to go for 16 miles. That forest at 2:18 is so cool. That Queens Cup flower is really pretty. The only time I wore a pack on the front was to carry Kristy's pack in addition to mine on my back. I couldn't do that for very long! I saw that fish. I think I'll go fishing in the morning. Great hike even at 14+ miles that you did. Cool ferry. Great job!
Thanks! This is a popular trail, and I was hoping to go earlier in the season, but couldn’t because of covid. I’m really happy that it worked out and I had sunny weather too! Man, having two packs would be crazy! Mine wasn’t too heavy, and it was a daypack. The woods are beautiful and it would be refreshing to snack by the creek.... I thought it was pretty funny to just keep on movin’. Btw, hope you catch some fish! 🐠🐠🐠
@@JenniferLupine I'm glad that you made it up there. It was beautiful. I just got back from backpacking and fishing. The fishing was hard. the fish were smart and didn't want anything we threw at them. However, I did get my 15 quota to finish off my 50 plus i landed my biggest tiger trout ever! Bonus. 👍🐟😃
@@Packsalot Do you catch and release or save to eat? I haven't made it out fishing again- we've got a heat wave this week- would love to be out by the water!! I'm glad you got your 50!!
@@JenniferLupine Thank you. I catch and release most of the time. We only harvested 2 fish for the entire weekend. It was really hot here too. Owen and I both got sun burned. I'll send you a picture.👍😃
@@Packsalot 👍😊
I have never turned my pack around while hiking, lol. Novel idea though. 14.4 is a great day of hiking. I usually keep mine in the 5-7 mile range since I hike with my grandson alot and his feet can't handle much more than that. I can't remember the last 10+ miler I have done. Anyway this is another great video Jennifer.
Thanks Jim! You should try turning the pack around for snack time! All my treats were on top, I was laughing and having a good time! I wanted to get in as many miles as possible, that’s probably why I thought of it, and also it helped on a prior hike when there were tons of mosquitoes 🤣😂! I’m so happy that you get to hike with your grandson! You want to make sure it’s fun for him, taking time to explore along the way! Good memories!
Gee Jennifer I would make that 8 miler an overnighter. Love to spend the night in the woods but I usually have company. I'm a scardy cat at night when alone. Lol
I totally agree! It would be an awesome camping spot! It’s restricted to permits, to limit impact. I’m planning to try for a permit next year!
I have not put the backpack in the front ... but maybe I would if I were doing 14 miles 😆😊. You may have invented it . But I will likely try it now 😊
Sure! Give it a try... if your pack is not too big, it’s sort of like a baby carrier from the old days, just have to watch the ground a bit for rocks and roots.... helps keep the miles going! 🤣🤣😂 ha ha - got to have some fun 🥾🥾 How are you? Maybe in a few weeks, when it cools off, we can go on a hike together after all... just let me know 😊
Beautiful hike and great locations! Positive vibes when you hear the sound of water stream ! Planning to visit the state this fall. Will shortlist the hikes you did and will do couple of hikes when I visit...) It’s a daunting task to pick your top hikes though..)
Hi- I’m excited that you’ll be coming to Washington! Do you know about Washington Trails Association? It’s on the web at www.wta.org. It’s a great resource for hiking in WA, easy to search by location of hike or type of hike. They have trail descriptions and trip reports from hikers sometimes with photos. They put out a magazine and help maintain the trails in the state through work parties, and they support outreach in many ways. Let me know if you have any questions! I’m sure you’ll love hiking here!
Beautiful place to hike Jennifer, very scenic. Males unlike females aren’t very good at multitasking, I could never eat and walk at the same time! 😉
Haha! I started turning the backpack around on my prior hike to avoid the mosquitos- they were bad if I stopped for a minute- and I wanted a little water and snack. I laughed and thought it was pretty funny. Got to be careful on rocks and roots though. I always enjoy hearing from you - have a great day!
Hi Jennifer I stopped by to visit you're Lovely channel. I hit all the buttons and bell I hope you do too Tyfs ❤ I'm soooo Looking forward to seeing more videos!! Have a wonderful day much love to you 🥰
