Plus, Olympic is black bears only, it's pretty chill, not much need to make your presence known unless you see a sign urging you to do so. I was more concerned by a signpost at the beginning of Lake Angeles Trailhead that said there had been a mountain lion attack as early as a month ago.
I was excited to watch this video. I live in South Seattle and have hiked and visited Olympics many times. The tall bushes with red and blue berries are huckleberry. Blue berries grow close to ground and turn red/orange/gold in late summer, early fall.❤
Thank you for getting out there and doing it I've been a fan for years and recently lost my right foot from diabetes and let me tell you your videos are so great to watch feels like im out there with you guys! Thanks alot and may the force be with you.
This is my 2nd video I've watched of you guys hiking. The first was the Grand Tetons hike. I have a couple of compliments, 1, your filming is so good, it really does feel like I'm with you guys on this adventure. I even got my wife watching with me. 2, you guys come across as very genuine and friendly people, again I told my wife "I would love to have friends like that and go on those adventures with them" Keep up the good work. Greetings from New Zealand.
Great show guys we have been watching you for three years now it’s like so therapeutic the way you guys present the nature the music the message you convey awesome!! Thank you!!
Thomas mentioned how it was the quietest place he's ever heard. Not sure how close you were to it, but there is a place in the park called "One Square Inch of Silence". Supposedly it's the quietest place in the contiguous US.
I've been hiking vicariously through your videos since Dolly Sods. They are amazingly shot, the music is just perfect, and you guys (singly, two, three or four of you - and sometimes Sierra!) are always entertaining. I had a chuckle this morning, as I found your Monongahela National Forest episode in my feed, and re-watched it. "Day 3 - 2 miles hiked". I guess those days are long gone, but for someone like me who aspires to get back on the trails, it was a great reminder to start small.
I've only just discovered the channel but it's giving me serious wanderlust. I cannot wait to get up into the Pacific Northwest, even just for a day hike! Thanks for the cozy vlog, I loved this.
Got to watch half of this live last night, about to start the first half now. Your videos are always such a wonderful demonstration of friendship & nature. I spent 3 weeks in the PNW this summer. It's diversity can't be matched. Spent almost a week going up a foggy coast. A week of volcanoes with Rainer>Helens>Hood>Jefferson. Crater Lake the last weekend with some friends.
Amazing! Spectacular scenery and those mushrooms! Wow!!!! Purple mushrooms! Magic mushrooms! Reindeer pee? You guys never fail to entertain and educate! Thank you so much! ❤️
Thank you for filming this! I did this hike years and years ago and have always wanted to show my family how amazing this trail is. We saw Black bears at almost that same exact spot lol. Don't think I could do this hike now lol. We went the other direction and did it in two nights. one at lunch lake one at heart lake. We had elk bugling right outside our tents on the first night and my buddy slept through it lol.
Oh my gosh. I'm a ranger out there hate i missed yall. So glad you finally made it out. I work in Sol duc and the high divide is just such an amazing trip.
Hey there, I’m going out there for the first time from June 19-26th. I’m guessing that’s too early to be able to do this hike? Would it be too early to do the Hurricane Hill to Hurricane Ridge hike?
@@patrickwestbender4418 June would be good for hurricane ridge. Over nighting on the High Divide in June is a bit sketchy (but doable) with the snow thats still up there!
@ Okay cool. I don’t mind sketchy as long as it’s passable with crampons. The High Divide looks like the most epic trail in the park to me. I also plan on doing Storm King, and am really hoping the Hoh rainforest is accessible by then. Not gonna hold my breath though. Thanks for the info!
That place always has felt like home to me. I feel blessed to of been able to see this episode and hope to one day return there again. Keep up the wonderful work, it is very healing!
The peninsula is so cool, love all of your content! You guys mentioned on the first night that you didn't have a ground cloth for one of your tents. If you want a really light/cheap one, go get a roll of polycro or tyvek from the hardware store and cut it to size. For ~$10 its super lightweight and keeps you warmer/dryer in wet conditions.
Another magical exploration of our beautiful forests. Olympia national park is a wonderland. Those red/yellow mushrooms my favorite. I call them my Alice in Wonderland fairy stools. My yard is full of them. Thank you for sharing and enjoying your respect and love for each other. Definitely agree about the tarp.
A camper in 1972, squealed in glee at the majestic mountains in Hocking Hills. I nearly drove off the road into a field. I said, majestic mt has a glacier on top, all year. I encouraged her to visit Washington some day.
If those are Big Agnes Copper Spur tents, you should be able to setup the fly and footprint first, and then the tent body last. I have the one person version and that’s how I setup on rainy trips. Great video!
Did this hike a few years ago in the opposite direction. Saw a bear in the exact same spot you saw your first one. Olympic is my favorite place. So many of those views are still burned into my memory.
After watching this awesome hike of yours, im craving so much to go out into nature! You capture the magic and beauty and hardships so perfectly! One of my favorite scenes - textbook serenity :D
so fun to see you guys in a part of the world I know fairly well!! I love the lush greens of the Olympics. next time y'all should try the red huckleberries, they're the backpacking snack of my youth and tasty on oatmeal
Ha the first time he called it a blueberry i was confused. Learning is a life long process. It is great to see you all and this is an incredibly beautiful forest.
Welcome to Washington! Watching from Whatcom County! It’s so wild to see my favorite guys finally visiting our state!! You guys need to also visit Eastern Washington ( Leavenworth) if you get a chance to come back. ❤
For future use, you can set up the rainfly first on big Agnes tents if you have the ground sheet. Keeps the interior of the tent dry during setup. Rough conditions!
Awesome stuff. We did this loop a few years ago and camped at lunch lake and heart lake. We did the loop counter clockwise, and from what I recall, that’s the easier route - assuming you can get the right permit. Bears: we saw nine bears, one of which was not deterred by our presence and came right toward us. Always carry bear spray - regardless what the park’s website says. Some of these park employees are animal rights activists who would honestly rather have a hiker attacked by a bear than have a bear sprayed by a hiker. Doesn’t matter if there’s never been an attack at this park - bears are wild and dangerous animals, and even if there are plenty of berries, if you round a corner and surprise one, anything can happen. Thanks for another awesome adventure!
It’s illegal here in California to carry bear spray in national parks as well, but I’ll take a fine over a hostile bear encounter anytime. Especially if I have my kids with me. Some people are clueless.
@ that’s incorrect. It is not illegal to carry bear spray in California national parks, rather certain CA national parks have banned it - but that is simply a *park rule* that has no legal recourse. I agree with the other part of your post, though. I don’t care what the park says, I carry it anyway.
@ banned, illegal, either way I’m taking it with me. I’m sure if you’re caught with it or god forbid use it, you’d face a fine. But that might also depend on how cool the park ranger is. I don’t leave my life nor the life of my family to bureaucrats.
@@natlovell122bear spray is banned in places like Yosemite because the black bears of the area are docile toward humans, a relationship fostered over a century. They are curious towards food and food only. Since it’s inception, Yosemite has never had a serious or fatal bear attack. People like you threaten that by creating a hostility towards the bears. They are wild animals and are to be respected, but they have proven not to be dangerous when dealt with calmly. Hopefully the $5,000 fine and jail time deter you.
The rainforest and beach areas of Olympic are gorgeous, I was lucky enough to visit for a week 2 years ago. The Hoh rainforest and Quinault rainforest are amazing, as well as Shi Shi beach. It's not easy to get accommodation, but worth it. Surprisingly the least interesting part is the alpine part (still gorgeous though), in the center of the park. For that, Rainier, Glacier or the Tetons are more spectacular. But for a temperate rainforest, there's no better place in the country IMO.
it's my home territory! (I grew up in the pacific north west, oregon to be exact, but now live in texas) I miss the greenery. those "blueberries" were probably blue huckleberries to be honest. yes they come in two colors - they are both a mix of sweet/tart, they don't really get any bigger than that. We used to grow both on the property I grew up on.
So excited to see you guys coming to us in the PNW. I love living on this side, so green, lush, and fresh all year long. Believe it or not I haven’t been to Olympic NP yet, but its sure on my list to visit. What time of the year was this backpacking done?
So many questions! Before the parking lot there is a pipe of the hot springs. Did you feel it? Did you see the Hoh Rain Forest? Elk roam it plus world’s largest sitka spruce? Lake Crescent? REI’s huge Seattle store?
Any freestanding tent that is used with the ground sheet can be set up without getting the inside wet. You first put the poles into the grommets on the ground sheet, then throw the rain fly over the poles. You can then set up the inner mesh under the cover of the rain fly.
Welcome to my neighborhood. Thank goodness it was raining 🌦! We wouldn't want anyone to know what the Great NW looks like when it's sunny🌞😎. Too many people would move here. We couldn't stop the Californians 25-30 years ago, but we definitely don't want anyone else to move here. The comic relief at 1:03:04 - no response from Bryan! You guys are so tired, but it was worth it! I can't believe the 25 pushups from Bryan?!?!
It looks better in the spring and fall when it's raining. It gives you the full experience. Just feels "off" when it's summer. Like the vibe isn't there
