  • Mona Lisa and I have been living out of our 1997 Ford E350 since January 1, 2019. It's taken me nearly two years to do a van tour video because the van was always in a state of evolution and was never 'done'. Here's how we organize and have things situated right now! In six months it could be different.

    So great. I have been watching conversion videos and all the vans look like they came out of a showroom. Your setup looks like it's actually used. Absolutely right about using ice. You're absolutely charming to boot.

    Awesome job young lady! I have had 32 ft. Class A Motor homes as I traveled doing Volunteer Disaster Relief and Ministry! One day while I was working at my desk, I just wanted to heat about 10 ft, the space I was working in. So therefore came my decision to downsize! I am now down to a 1997 Ford, extended van. with a V-10 engine. It had 272,000 when I bought it. These engines are good for over 400,000 I love what you have done, and I am with you, I don't want cabinets on the walls. A fiberglass top would run $4000. So having built and being blessed with many talents, I cut the roof out and went up 20 " . That gives me a 5 " plus above my head. Me to! I have changed my van several times and I am getting close to a redo for the way it is now. A guy once said -- you will never get it right the first time, so I rough built most of it, so I could change things as I went. I have changed it about 5 times, and as I said, its about where I want it!! Glad you are following your heart and enjoying the road! I have been a rolling stone most of my life! Enjoy, stay safe, and thank you for your video!!!!!!

      Thanks for watching! Your journey sounds just as interesting. I'm a big fan of keeping builds flexible at first so you can figure out exactly where you want things. Keep it up and enjoy the journey!

    Having a year or so of living in 75 square feet of space under my belt, my best advice for this lifestyle is to develop a habit of PUTTING THINGS AWAY when you aren’t actively using them. In the limited space of vanlife, there is no luxury of just leaving things laying around,

    • @HollyPriestley
      @HollyPriestley  3 года назад +2

      Totally! Great advice. Everyone needs their own systems, routines, and processes and keeping it clean is paramount.

      @@HollyPriestley And putting them where they belong. I'm so guilty of just laying things down wherever, then having to search for them later. Ugh. Kind of like always having to look for the tape or the scissors when you're in the middle of wrapping Christmas presents. They were just here! OMG! :-)

    Great set-up! But you might want to get a Dickerson propane marine stove it fits on the wall. The good part is that it does not use any air inside your van to heat- it uses the outside air. Your van stays safe warm and dry. It was used as a small stove for small boats! They have different models. Try to get the one that Burns and uses outside air.

    • @HollyPriestley

    Thank you so much for sharing your video with us. I just bought a 2002 Ford E350, with a fiberglass top. I call him Finnegan. He is half built out. I am vegan so I am not too concerned about refrigeration. I didn't see any type of toilet accommodations in your van. I don't have running water inside the van. I haven't been living in my van yet. I intend to go out full time within the next 2 months . You are a great help to me because I really don't know what I want to do with Finnegan until I live in him for a while, but your ideas are wonderful. I don't want to put a lot of weight in him. I do not have a ceiling fan I do have a dog companion who will be living with me full time. I think the scary part for me living in the van is where I will be parking in the day time and night time . I know once I get out there a bunch of fear will be dealt with. I currently live in Las Vegas so the winter here is fine. NO way can I live in my van in the summer here. It's way too hot. I am so happy I found your channel, thank you again. Penny

    • @HollyPriestley
      @HollyPriestley  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching Penny! I have a video coming out Tuesday where I talk about my bathroom setup in detail. If Finnegan is an E350, you really don't have to worry about weight too much, these vans can handle heavy loads! I def recommend getting a good vent fan if you're traveling with a dog especially. I've got a few videos and blog posts where I talk in great detail about parking, it gets easier the more practice you give yourself - promise ☺️ enjoy the process! See you on the road soon!

    You can put water in 2 liter bottles or any bottle and lay them in the sun and they will get warm or hot. You can put water into a dishpan on a chair outside and use a cup to pour it over your head to wash and rinse

    A thought, utilize the extra material of the purple curtains by making pockets. Replace one side for your shoes & the other side for organizing the odds & ends that you want handy, maybe cooking utensils & silverware, hand tools, scissors, tape, pens, paper, stuff like that always comes in handy but hard to keep convenient while living in a vehicle. I lived in a Honda Civic for about 10 yrs. I have a lot of creative ideas. I’m in my own house now but am considering converting something to travel.

    I also keep cards etc on my visors and I collect feathers! I believe they ate gifts from my Mom and Dad ... white from my Mom, Black from my Dad! I used to keep them in a large round glass vase, but of course that doesn't work well in a van, so now they're just placed all over the van in various places! I just moved into my Ford E150, previously converted cargo van Jan 1, 2020 exactly one year after you!

    Loved the tour, thank you! You kno, abt the hair washing thing: yes ago, when I had long hair, I kept it clean-ish by pulling my hair back into a low pony tail at the base of my neck. Then I washed the hair on the crown & front sides of my head. Didn’t touch any of the length, it stayed dry. Rinse, pat dry & looks pretty good w/o a lot of fuss. Just sayin’🧝🏻‍♀️

    Electric blankets for the cold nights are amazing! You can even find them designed to plug into the car lighters & use little power. Put the electric blankets on the top of other blankets for the best results. The only downfall is you don’t want to get out from under it, so I also had one that I wrapped around my legs/lap while driving. The older vehicles seem to be harder to keep warm unless you keep the vehicle running constantly.

You might try condensing your tea collection into a single container, perhaps a pretty tin. All those boxes are space hogs. Thanks for watching! I really love being out in the woods with no neighbors in sight, plenty of sun, maybe some water like a river or lake. In cities, my parking overnights depends entirely on the area - usually I go for neighborhoods a block or two off a main drag/walkable/popular area. They're generally used to seeing vehicles they don't recognize and I won't stick out so much. I have a video/podcast on parking in cities on my channel if you want to dive in more!
