  • In todays video I go over how I pretty much fail on creating a foundation for the Dairy Queen. I had plans to do parking lot lines and curbs n such. Its not a big deal which is good, I'll just be changing the way I do things in the next episode. Last couple videos have been off for me but next week I will try to come out with a banger

    I used to have an air brush. When I first started to do my custom painted railroad car's. Now I just use the spray paint can's. I can get pretty many car's out of 1 can. I just got all my reindeer 🦌 figures that I ordered from the hobby shop.

    Nice thing about paint is you can add more paint. Do you want it lighter or darker? You could try some thinned grey washes to help it get to the color you want.

      Haven’t messed with washes yet. I may see if I can do that. If not I’ll just use joint compound and my acrylics

    It reminds me of olive drab. Overall olive drab color is a multitude shades of green. You can also try weathering. You can stated the DQ parking lot got a new coat of pavement

    Hang in there TR... just another learning curve. Step back from it for a bit and you'll bounce back.

    You could paint the Parking lot a darker grey/blk to resemble asphalt. I feel that would be more life like anyhow. But it’s obviously your call. I like the DQ tho. I look forward to seeing your solution. Thanks for sharing

      I do like the fresh asphalt look. I’ll see if I have the paint for it. Thank you for the suggestions 😁

    Easy fix. Buy a cheap sponge, grab a cheap bottle of stone grey, throw in a drop of white (any kind will do), and a drop of brown. Mix them slightly then dab on the sponge to give the parking lot a real-life look. When it's dry, add some chalks if you like. It'll look great. I've done that a million times. Enjoy your videos.

    Nice video mate. If your unhappy with the colour then try lightening it up by using a light grey wash or maybe some weathering powders to make it a bit lighter as that would work. Or just brush paint a lighter coat of grey over the top. Hope that is useful. - Nicholas.

    You might could try some weathering powders on the foundation. Right now it looks like brand new concrete.

  • @VSLAModelRR
    @VSLAModelRR 2 года назад +1

    If you are trying to achieve an aged concrete look (which is hard by the way) you need some tan in there. Camo tan or a Khaki Tan, misted, then back with the gray. If you have seen any of my videos, take a look at the big bridge I did, just gray and tan spary paint so far.

    The best concrete color spray paint I use, is testers 1233T light aircraft gray. It’s gray with just a little bit of tan in there to make it have that old concrete look.
    Hope that helps you, have a great day

    Hey man go heavier with the black then carefully wet a brush with thinner and light strokes to get that depth. I’ve done that with poly styrene and had decent results! Great job either way the joys of model railroading.

    Man am I gonna miss running my BN cascade and Santa Fe warbonnett diesels, new layout is set in the golden era powered by mostly small steam in south coastal Texas so they definitely don’t fit the time era or setting at all, I do plan to run occasional through trains when running a more modern era ops session from time to time to get use out of them but my geep40 and gp15 consist in really gonna miss running such great road switchers

    • @TopRailroad
      @TopRailroad  2 года назад

      Sounds like a great era to model. I love steam engines. Maybe you can make a small switching layout with those engines so they can still get some action :)

    Great video TR and its understandable that it's not matching the other parking lots. Was the paint you used on the others a canned paint? Don't let it discourage you and like Bob Ross would say it's a "happy accident" You'll get it figured out bcuz the layout looks great and it's an easy fix. I'm impressed with what you've gotten done and it won't overshadow the progress that's complete. That tank car looks sharp w the Blue Bearing Caps like I had to get lol. Small details like that catch my eye! Thanks again for sharing this series of videos with us along with your time and effort my friend!

    • @TopRailroad

      Thanks Shawn for the kind words! It is a canned paint. It was the only grey I had so I was kind of experimenting. I’m just too picky though haha

    • @TopRailroad
      @TopRailroad  2 года назад

      I may try that. The only thing is I only like to use spray paint with even surfaces like the polysterene. Acrylic paint is a pain sometimes when it comes to a even coat. If that makes sense 😂

    I'm thinking about using sandpaper sheets for a parking lot.
    Making a base with a cork sheet for height and glueing sheets of light grey sandpaper on top of it.
    The shade of grey and the sandpaper texture would be similar to a road, i think styrene texture is too smooth. What do you think of this idea?

    • @TopRailroad
      @TopRailroad  2 года назад +1

      I have seen people use it and it does come out pretty realistic. I think it would look nice plus it’s a lot easier. But if you want to really get crazy, the joint compound is perfect for making roads. It justs takes a lot more work

      I use beach sand. Glue it down first, then use country gray, Add cracks and fill with black India ink. Of course before you paint the concrete.

  • @Aberdude8
    @Aberdude8 2 года назад

    Wasn't the original color "Elephant Grey" or something like that? I have to watch your previous episodes to see for sure. I think you also would mix in white. However, if this is supposed to be part of a new shopping center, then maybe a "trendier" or "stylish" look could explain the weird shade of grey.😉 Ultimately, your call. (The beauty and freedom of having your own layout) 😀🌳🚂🌲🏭😺

    Why do you want all the concrete to look the same??? Concrete in real life has many shades depending on the age of the concrete, the use of the concrete, and the dirtyness of it. Allof the concrete with the same shade would (in my opinion) be boring... Embrace the differences.
