The Many Gangs of Calgary, Alberta, Canada

- NOTE: All information in this video is publicly available and has been presented previously by other news organizations. This is intended to be a general overview for informational purposes.
In this video I talk about the gangs that have developed in the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Calgary routinely has some of the lowest overall crime rates among major Canadian cities, but many people are surprised to learn about the lengthy gang history within the city. This includes one of the most deadly gang wars in Canadian history.
I cover the following groups in this video:
Fresh Off the Boat Gang (FOB) - Started by Nick and Timothy Chan in the late 1990s, major gang in the 2000s.
Fresh Off the Boat Killers (FK) gang - Major rivals to FOB in the 2000s
403 Soldiers - Prominent gang in the 2000s, allied with FOB
The Family - Active 2015-2020, led by Lawrence Orubor
Calgary's Youngest Savages (CYS) - Minor youth gang
Aryan Guard - Neo-Nazi terrorist organization started by Kyle McKee
Devil Boys - Vietnamese-based gang active 1980s-1990s
Young Dragons - Small Asian gang active in the 1980s
Rude Boys - Vietnamese gang active in the 1980s
Kung Lok - Asian gang active in the 1980s
Grim Reapers MC - Outlaw motorcycle club established in 1967
Kings Crew MC - Outlaw motorcycle club established in 1977
There are also a few other small gangs that have developed in Calgary that I did not mention, the video was just getting way too long.
If you got some value out of this one please consider subscribing to my channel - I upload at least one new video per week.
Thanks for watching!
CORRECTION: At 7:37 I say that Lawrence Orubor was given additional time on his prison sentence in July of 2024. Obviously I am not a Minority Report operative and I cannot predict the future. Lawrence Orubor received additional time on his sentence in MARCH of 2024. It wouldn't be a Strange North video if there wasn't at least one mistake, so there you go. Thanks for watching folks!
"Lawrence Orubor, 55, of Calgary handed 6½ years on top of 10-year sentence" - Front and center with a google search. Your error is not to worry about. Dude's lawyer argued the sex trafficking sentence would result in a combined sentence that is unfair. 16.5 years is a large bit. Most murders in Canada are less. Court disagreed.
Everything with a grain of salt and understanding that things are subject to change.

you messed up... john pheng was not fob gang member. it was stated on the news back then when it happened
I went to school with Sanjeev. The kids parents were wealthy. That's the worst part of the gangs in Calgary. None of these guys are gang banging because they need money. They're all rich kids.
thats 90% of gangs in Alberta.
@@cole9058 BC too, to be honest. All the brown and asian gangs in metro vancouver are all rich kids. It's such a joke.
we dont have a gang culture its just a bunch of cokehead weirdos lol

Your mention of Rebels MC reminded me of that big fight they had with members of the Canadian Airborne in Edmonton. You should maybe touch on that one some time )

First video of yours that I've seen. Sent chills down my spine. Used to work at the Centre of Hope where I would often meet people with associations to some of those groups.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - yeah a lot of people just aren't aware of the level of gang activity in the country. Cheers mate!

@@strangenorthdont bother. Halufax has fake bloods & crips 😂 they aint shit.
Awesome video. I grew up with friends in FK, Sanj was a good friend of mine in high school into uni. My childhood best friend Jason Dang was needlessly killed on a new years eve as well, by an FOB member (who was shot in the club, I thought was Kismet ), and you indicated this as well. I hope you can delve into the newer shootings/criminality by South Asian and Middle Eastern crews that are coming in. Lots of drive-bys and shootings on the roads, YYC police have been worried but maybe its all media hype. Thanks for doing this 👊🏽
Jason Dangs death was sad to hear about, I went to school with him and he was such a nice guy. I applied for a job once that was to help people get out of gangs but because I went to flhs in the same years as Jason and knew quite a few people that were tied to the gangs it was determined that I was too close for it to be safe to work with that agency. In jr high a group that I hung out with was even questioned if we knew anything about the prostitution ring happening there.
Hey thanks for watching and I greatly appreciate your support - that's actually the first time someone has done that, still very new to RUclips/video production and that means a lot and it's pretty cool! Damn, sorry to hear about your friend being killed - that would be a brutal thing to go through as a friend. Yeah I really didn't go into newer gang activity in this video, I focused on bigger players from the past. But I'd like to probably do another Calgary (and maybe Edmonton) gang video down the road talking about newer gang trends in the prairies, our rapid growth seems to have brought some new criminal elements. Cheers mate!
@@strangenorth Jason Dang's death was actually in 2004 and was related to the fob/fk . So it was in reference to the stuff you talked about. Good vid
Great video!! I just unloaded in Leduc. Headed to Lloydminster and taking tomorrow off there before headed home to Winnipeg. I was thinking Lloydminster AB and SK might be a near comparison, though probably couldn’t be a vs video.
Stay clear from the a&w on the Sask side hwy 16 😂
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed this one. You know what I'm actually working on a video comparing Moose Jaw and Prince Albert in Saskatchewan. Also posting one this Sunday on a bunch of UFO sightings in Alberta in 1967 you might find interesting. Thanks for watching, safe travels!

South Edmonton is the fastest growing suburb in Alberta. Just trying to spark some ideas for more vids bro, great job great channel.
Yeah good point, I've seen firsthand how rapidly that area has grown. Good idea, thanks for watching and I appreciate the support. Cheers!
I appreciate this Video.
I've lived in Clonegary for 62 of my 64 years. The only motorcycle gang that was missed is The Banditos. I remember seeing them around in the late 1970's.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - yeah fair enough, you definitely hear some stories about those guys. Cheers!
Great video, amazing research.. Keep up the great work, amigo!
fresh off the boat & fresh off the boat killers gang names have always cracked me up
once, i went to a karaoke bar in the mid 2000s and was so nervous with all the flashy vietnamese men there.
Ah good ol Nantas. Awesome place, kinda scary sometimes.
This video seemed very well researched and had great detail. A video for the Vancouver and surrounding area gangs and violence would be extensive I imagine. Vancouver just had a targeted daylight shooting downtown, cameras everywhere caught it. All the crime here the cops always say "suspects are known to police", which is infuriating. Then there is the corruption at the ports which is a whole other angle to the crime here.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take time to comment - I plan on doing a gangs of Vancouver video down the road, but I want to do a lot more research first. And that's a good point, Canada's port cities definitely have a lot of corruption - seems it's the way of the world really. Cheers mate
Always interesting watching your videos. Keep up the good work!
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - glad you're getting some value out of them, cheers!
Do you worry as your channel gets bigger if the gangs will respect you or put a hit out on you for talking about there memebers and how they operate? Videos are good to watch I do enjoy would be interesting if you started interviewing some of these gang memebrs or past gang memebers that reformed. Awsome videos keep it up and i might have to sub
It's not like this stuff isn't already know, like how do you think he found out?
@@NotLugale Your right but how do u go after wikipidia? When the news covers gangs its usualy one story in the hour news not a whole channel about ganglife just wondering if the creator ever worries about pissing the wrong gang off and getting hurt over there created videos.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to comment - in terms of your question, I have had my concerns about presenting the gang information. But all of the stuff I talk about is publicly available information that has been presented by others. It also annoys me when other RUclipsrs present this information while they hide behind AI voices and video clips. I could be wrong, but I figured it was more honorable and respectable to at least show my face. And I also realize that gang members are human and they realize that people are already well aware of them. I also don't want to be too timid with approaching more contentious issues, I have to really tread carefully but fortune favors the bold! I'm surprised how popular these gang videos have been, and it's definitely not the main theme of my channel.
In terms of interviews, I think they are a great idea and I plan on doing them on my channel. I actually have a couple interviews planned for the summer that I think a lot of people will find really interesting.
Thanks again for watching, cheers mate!
@@witherscreations I mean I can understand a gang not being happy about someone reporting about them, the part that really doesn't make sense is that losts of people do this and if they went after everyone it'd take too much time and effort

There have been some REALLY interesting "BARS" in Calgary that you could do historical crime deep dives on, like The Cecil, The King Eddie, The Highlander, The T&C, The 17th Ave (Forest Lawn Hotel), The Shamrock, The Beacon, Reggie's (St Regis Hotel) , The Spotlight (a peeler bar on 7th Ave between Center Street and First St SW),The "OLD" and "NEW" Calgarian, and 3 or 4 of the clubs on the old "ELECTRIC AVENUE", and any of the "Cowboy Mafia" places like "The Ranchman's", Cowboys, and there was also a "cowboy" bar on 7th ave up near 9th or 10th street (just before where the C-train goes north west over the Bow.)... There would be some great stories come out of some of those joints...lmffao... hell I worked in a couple of them.

Just to clarify, I worked with one of Bendle's best friends. One of the things they didn't really talk about with Aaron's death was that they had him for over 24 hours. They were more or less torturing him to force him to trick Mann in to a meeting. I'm not condoning gang violence, but Bendle was low level and Mann was literally a day or two away from leaving for Vancouver permanently.
Yeah, it's still one of the worst gang murders in the city. Bolsa still has articles up in the restaurant about the shooting.
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take time to leave feedback - damn, that sounds brutal. The whole gang war between the 2 groups really stands out, it's probably the worst open gang war in the Canadian prairies. I'm surprised Bolsa keeps articles regarding the shooting in their restaurant, but I suppose it does sort of make them stand out. I've also heard that restaurant has great food, never been.

The FOB/FK battles were wild which was HS era for me, as the video said they had no specific territories, so you could have a murder or shooting in an affluent NW neighbourhood, anywhere downtown YYC essentially or at a club on a Saturday night, sleepy SW neighbourhoods. It wasn't solely located in the less ideal places of the city aka the NE.
FOB/FK members were in also a lot of the HSs too around the city in both public and Catholic school districts, so you usually knew at least of someone directly who was in either group or someone who knew a person in one of either groups or were associated with them.
You're missing the Calgary police force and the NOTORIOUS RCMP.

What about fto? Or ftok?
What about the Cps and eps gangs?
The biggest gangs in Alberta. A monopoly on violence. Don’t want to be extorted by the political class? Resist being kidnapped?
“Don’t resist tax cattle”
NW Calgary is so safe I didn’t even know we had gangs
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to leave feedback - gangs definitely aren't a rampant problem, I just wanted to highlight some of the big players in the gang history of the city. Cheers!
Interesting
Don’t forget the Flames
No one is very scared of them
“Fresh of the boat” are what people are forced to deny by mainstream media outlets!
Fresh off the boat.... in a land locked province.
Please dont mention those fake gangster wannabe thugs. They’re not worthy to be listed on here actually would be an embarrassment.
they seem to be proud of it lol
@@DarkDramon his light switches are ON or OF. No wonder there is confusion.
@@DarkDramondo you know what fresh off the boat means?
Id love to mention Ottawa again.. but i think ill be careful. Haha
Great video. What part of Calgary is the safest to live? I am thinking of moving out from Toronto. Had enough of Ontario. I would appreciate the feedback.
North West...
Hey thanks for watching and I appreciate when people take the time to provide feedback - you know what, I'd have to personally agree with what the commenter below said. The northwest area of the city seems to be the safest overall. But I didn't want to make it seem like gang activity is wild and out of control in Calgary right now, it's not. There will always be problems in any major city, but the reality is that Calgary is actually one of the safest major cities in Canada and a wonderful place to live. Cheers mate!
Beside me on Springbank hill
NW & west side of SW
@@realalbertansouthwest of canton meadows and nw of rosscarrack more specifically.
you're a good guy
I appreciate it, thanks for watching!
Can you do a program on the parents of the thugs?
This better explains why they are who they are.
You forgot about that Lebanese crime family in Calgary that is in a gang war right now with a Mexican Cartel
12:02 is that hollohan?
I've always known there was gangs but I've never seen any when visiting Cowtown from Red Deer
It's not so bad out there, you're unlikely to encounter gang members. Just wanted to highlight subject as an overview - thanks for watching!
Good thing, usually you wont see any unless you are involved. The moto goes out of sight out of mind.
July of 2024 Lawrence Orubar was given and additional sentence? time stamp 7:38? theres some fortune telling going on
Damn, my bad - and I went through the video a few times and still missed that mistake lol. Cheers mate
Deport or lockdown
@@Rohityourface We could always defund them.
@@Rohityourface good point there a few bad cops also, my point is the newcomers that come here now to work and have a good life can F off , but on the other hand the politicians are really the people making it hard for the little people, We need too work together
The FOB x FOBK split was over a watch and a girl.
A lot of bloodshed was caused by that rift!
You should do a one on edmonton rappers like me !
That's not a bad video idea down the road, I actually plan on doing a bunch of interviews with different people too. Congrats on your RUclips success, cool to see Edmonton channels do well! Feel free to email my channel email as well, cheers mate!
@@strangenorth thank you! And yeah doing that video will bring a lot of exposure on the music in Edmonton, keep going as well!
