Manhunt, Manitoba: Two fugitives and the Cree trapper who helped close the case

- The search for young murder suspects Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod through the forests of Northern Manitoba in the summer of 2019 captivated the country and drew worldwide attention. The RCMP chased the shadowy teens from crime scenes in the mountains of British Columbia to Bird, Manitoba - a tiny First Nations community near Gillam.
As the police released tidbits of information to an anxious public, a local trapper from Fox Lake Cree Nation worked behind the scenes. He would have an impact on the search that no one could imagine.

Yes, all the more powerful for that quietness really. I spend a lot of time alone in the woods for my job as a wildlife ranger/hunter and the more time you spend alone with nature I find you become a quieter person. The quieter you are the more you see, both in the natural and human world.
Yes they speak with the heart , no need to raise the voice , you feel it as well as hear it, yes they are a beautiful people .

If we all could be better stewards for nature like the First Nations and Indigenous peoples naturally are, we would have no overfishing, no species on the edge of extinction, no oceans full of plastic, etc. We need to look to them for the answers to the problems the world has now and see them as the skilled and valuable resources and human beings they truly are.
I am a police officer in Ontario...Billy...Thank you for your Service to your Community, Manitoba and Canada and also the RCMP..I can tell you as a 32 year seasoned officer the police do not always get it right; but stories like yours help in the future to allow them to make it better the next time and even then there may be something else that their oversight will miss. I am thankful you did not get hurt and grateful to you for stepping up in defense of your community and for your fellow Canadians. I worked in the north for 5 years and I know what you did is part of who you are, how you were raised and the values you place in society and in helping one another.. Thanks Again.

Those two boys were murdered along with the others. The real murderer is probably dead but for some reason they won't tell the public the truth.

Billy helped out hunt down these two guys even though he was afraid. His love for his community is strong than his fear of death. He's a good man.
I want people like Billy and his wife for neighbours, what good, brave and caring people. God bless them. I appreciated the RCMP member admitting that the lack of bullet-proof vest was an oversight, that was honourable. I especially appreciated Billy's wife's acknowledgement that the two young men were someone's children, too. That can be a hard thing to even want to remember in times like these. We humans can be so quick to pride, so quick to judgment. This was a really beautiful video.
Billy a great bloke and deserved the recognition. He has a wife to match, caring even for the villains. Billy and family could come and be my neighbours any day they liked.

Many years ago, in fact very early sixties, free time after selling dairy herd in North Dakota. We would go up to the Overflowing River in Manitoba fishing. 62 miles south of the Pas on the north side of the river. A Cree Indian named Lenard Leesk cleaned the fish!! He we were 8 9 10 years old at the first time . He taught us how to filet fish the right way. We were from Mandan, North Dakota so were very familiar with Indians. Every chance we had, we would go over and talk to Lenard, but what was most fascinating was him talking to us. It was one of those growing up experiences you never for get. I was the 8 year old and today I'm 74. Now you know why I had to watch this story!!
I am from Manitoba and I frequently go north for peace and quiet and yes I’m also familiar with poeple from the opasquiac Cree nation they have taught me so much about angling and hunting it’s just a reminder of how important it is for these poeple to preserve and retain their culture!
Chyna was my friend's cousin. This story was super close to home and I have followed it from the beginning. I did not know about Billy and he was such an important piece of the puzzle. Great job putting this together.
He should have recieved recognition from the National Government, Prime Minister, or the Commander of the RCMP.

Thank you for risking your life to guide the RCMP in the manhunt, you are obviously the one without a doubt who found the bodies of the suspects, you deserve the recognition. I feel bad that you were not honoured by the RCMP for everything that you did. As some have stated on here, I heard about this, but never did I hear about you or your bravery! Your wife makes a good point, your life matters and you should have been just as equipped as the officers during the hunt. You are highly RESPECTED!!

That's slowly starting to change, as more First Nation people are getting degrees, building education facilities, and other resources for the North are creating opportunities for our Native Peoples. I wish I could live long enough to see it full bloom.

The compassion that this community has for the victims and the axis is really eye opening these are the people of canada that i know this is the love we need to spread across the world
What an amazingly kind, gracious, intelligent, brave man, Billy is. His wife deserves credit too, she obviously is a strong loving partner. Honouring him was late in the game but well deserved. Thank you Billy for all you did for your community and country as well as the families who suffered such tragedy and loss.

I followed this story in real time as it developed. I'm really impressed with this documentary. It's really well put together and I'm happy to see the public was honored for the important roll they played.
I'm not at all surprised with raven sighting.
I had mentioned to my coworkers that "the forest likely will "take them" and the ravens among other scavenger bird would be the first to find them... assuming they were dead and still on land. I have no doubt the birds would lead the authorities to the bodies."
I guess it could be viewed as kind of disturbing but the forest is powerful and has its own circle of life and we (humans) are just a small part in it.
I'm actually not all that surprised that the RCMP would not have notice that seemingly unmistakable sign of death. I get the impression they are masters in other fields and may not necessarily have that form recognition or specialty training.
Anyone who has invested countless hours in the forest, here or there would take notice of that as a key tool and utilize that unmistakable sign in recovery efforts.
Glad no more innocent people died.
Like mentioned in the vid, I too feel sad for those two boys and their families. I didn't at that time but now I do too. My heart goes out to those lives they took and their respective loved ones too.

we'll never know if the rcmp would have acted on the raven alone. its possible they would have searched the area on that piece of evidence had billy not mention it first. the rcmp are highly trained. doesnt change the fact that billy is a stellar canadian and is 100% responsible for solving this case.

I love the way they say, "He helped closed the case!" They had no clue what the bird meant! When the world goes to hell and all the modern conveniences are gone, people like him and his family will survive.
I'm so proud of the native people of Canada and glad that in the end he got his due. They are also desirable forest fighters as they 'know fire', according to my nephew who is a firefighter in Alberta. Just too bad that rcmp hasn't thought to give me a vest to protect his life.
Outstanding video, fellow Canadians would have never known about Billy Beardy and his amazing contribution to protect his family and community at large! He is a true hero, smarter than at least 60 RCMP personnel, not one of them thought about making sure he was as protected as they were. If it were not for this man, it would have been just another couple of missing fugitives, people living in fear for a long time, RCMP ... ya, I see the bird, nice! Thank you Billy. I grew up in Northern Manitoba and I totally understand the terrain. When the reports of York Landing came in, I knew it was a mistake. You probably did too. Thank you for all you did in helping to bring closure to this horrific crime. I wish the best for you. You've reminded me of what it was like to live in a simpler time.

Actually, he didn't want to have his name on the news until after it was done and he was home. The Rcmp couldn't mention him without his permission until recently. They didn't take his credit, he was to humble and didn't want the notoriety at the time...

So how come it has taken this long for the real behind the scenes story to come out and BILLY BEARDY'S part in it? All we ever heard was the RCMP and what they did! You mean to tell me there was no RCMP officer trained to operate a boat and a civilian WITH NO BULLET PROOF VEST was put in danger?!!
Where does it say that there weren't any cops trained to operate a boat?
Because the establishment are total government lovers and want everyone to only have confidence in government and not themselves. Same with the 1997 flood. It was private contractors with bulldozers and dump trucks getting dangerously close to streams and ponds to plug them and basically no mention of what they were doing. Just non stop praise of those two guys from the Manitoba Government, how they were saving the universe from getting flooded.
@dandivine The dive team? If the dive team doesn't have anyone that can operate a boat how would they even function? Ever heard of local knowledge? If someone with local knowledge volunteers to drive the boat and let the others focus on the job at hand why wouldn't they do that?
@dandivine they have RCMP police boats all over. It's not the fact someone couldn't just drive a boat they didn't know that land. You can be the most trained person, going into a strange place with maps doesn't mean I'll just know the place.

All of Canada followed this tragedy and manhunt. To not initially recognize Mr. Beardy is wrong. All of Canada would have felt better knowing that the RCMP enlisted the help of an experienced dedicated native man who cared so much for his community. Doing it afterwards is honorable but much better if it was done during.. would have shown the respect and gratitude that was due

As tragic and dramatic this blemish is to us Canadians, I’m glad to see that Billy was shown as a Knight with his involvement. With his kind heart and skillful knowledge of the area was the right person to have called upon. With the community promotion to chief and the RCMP acknowledgement is of coarse well deserved, it’s unfortunate that most of Canada will not be informed of this great Canadian. Thanks to those who filmed and put this together in order for myself and others to really see and know of this great person.
