    I found the thumb grip doesn't get it the way at all. I use the Q menu often to switch between my preset options. It also makes holding the camera one handed all day perfectly comfortable. Like you say, I don't understand why people are moaning about the 'missing' controls. You can handle everything through the manual controls on the lens, the top plate, and the front button. What else is needed? Well, for anything else, I added them to the swipe functions on the screen. Bob is your proverbial.

    This is how I have felt since day one of seeing this camera. All the reviews make it sound like such a pain to use because of the lack of buttons. All I keep thinking is "how many buttons do you really need?". The reality is, if you just take the time to setup the camera based on your shooting preferences, you'll find it has everything you need and nothing that you don't. Personally I like the fact that it doesn't have tons of buttons all over the place. I'm never going to use them all and on a small camera like this they just get in the way.

    left swipe on the lcd is my focus mode selector, right swipe is focus type eg. single point/multi/zone, wheel press toggles between shutter speed and iso. Press in joystick you can wheel the focus point size. its really that easy. Lovely camera. I like the less buttons and reduced clutter. Everything is still there.

    The focus switch and an ISO dial would have been “nice to have”. Being used to my T3, which is my main camera, i personally would also prefer to have these. But you can easily do without: I set the AEL/AFL-button to focus mode (S,C,M), the front wheel for ISO (and f-stop) and the Fn button for face recognition. These settings work perfect for me and having less buttons not only helps the classic look of this camera, especially when doing street photography or something similar i find it even better because it’s less distracting for me. Different people, different tastes, but i really like this camera a lot and couldn’t agree more: don’t let the lack of buttons hold you off from giving this fine camera a chance. 🙃

    I'm using this camera as if it was an old analog camera. 99% old manual lenses w. a very basic set up. Never used the video function so far and never looked back to the buttons I used to have on my X E2. I've set the main menu to my liking which is how you ideally set it up by deleting all the functions you rarely or never use and by rearranging your main functions in the order that fits your work flow the best. All the functions you formally could access w. buttons now are as easily accessible as w. the buttons when setting up the ones left intelligently. It's my main walk around camera so memory on where is what plays a role too. All in all I fully embrace the lack of buttons in favour of a larger area to grab my big hands on and in favour of not accidentally hitting buttons without even noticing. IMO the X E4 is a masterpiece as for design and technical capability regarding photography. Personally I couldn't care less for the extra grip that so many people believe they couldn't live without. Most grips are just fugly and only good for ruining a camera's design. I'm using a leather half case which suits the style of the camera and helps the handling sufficiently even w. my big hands. I don't get the ISO fiddeling. I set the lowest ISO possible for a particular condition and go from there. That is using aperture and shutter speed. What else do you really need? All IMO

    I just appreciate that you’re the only one I’ve seen that says you can press up in drive mode to switch to video. It’s so obvious, but every other reviewer makes a point to say you have to “scroll all the way to the bottom for video” in an exasperated way, to an almost disingenuous degree making it seem so tedious. Like for real - just press up. The end. Great video by the way. Coming from an X-Pro 2 and x100f, I just bought an X-E4 recently and really looking forward to it shipping soon with all the backorders.

    Your absolutely right, the lack of buttons is so easy to work around. I got the E-X4 as a b cam to X-T3, I wasn't expecting to use the E4 a whole lot. The X-T3 sits on the shelf till the weather turns bad. I never question taking the E4 with me like I did with the T3.

    I have had both the X-T3 and X-Pro3 and sold them. Now I have the X-S10 and the X-E4 is in the mail. People talk about the X-T series og cameras giving an analog experience. This is completely wrong in my opinion. For me an analog experience was my Nikkormat FTn which I bought in 1969. You set the aperture on the lens and the shutterspeed on the camera. Since I generally used the same film, I did not alter the ISO setting. That was the analog experience. The X-T3 may look analog, but it is nothing like it.

    Liked AND Subscribed. THANK YOU! I mentioned most of this on "Big Head Taco"s video a few weeks ago.
    I can control the Exposure Triangle from outside of the menu. I use AF-S, AutoISO and AutoWB, so just like with an old film body where I wasn't switching ISO shot to shot, but Roll to Roll (rarely) so as long as I have access to AV, SS and +/- EV...I'm a happy camper with fewer buttons and dials to bump. MOSTLY I change my aperture on the run to control my Depth of Focus. I don't need to assign the rear command dial (or the second tap of the front command dial) to the Shutter Speed as so many do, because we HAVE a dedicated Shutter Speed dial.
    Personally, I'm not particularly a street shooter, but I use the flip LCD on my Fujis a good bit of the time for work (as a Real Estate Photographer) and for fun when I'm shooting low...instead of trying to get on the ground to frame a show of something a foot high, I can just flip out the LCD...OR when I need to shoot over the heads of a crowd I can tilt the LCD down so that I can frame my shot at arms length above my head.
    FWIW, I saved myself $170 (US) and cancelled the Fuji Grip and Fuji Thumbrest (which at the time were STILL on back order) because I found that the Lensmate LM-XE3 thumbrest fits this camera PERFECTLY (as does the Haoge thumrest for the X-E3/X100V)...I also purchased a $14 FlipBac stick on G4 'grip' for the front and that offers just enough grip to make it comfortable in the hand without adding significant bulk/weight to the body.
    The only place I think Fuji really dropped the ball on this (having fixed the LCD rotation bug you mention being fixed with the firmware update) is that the ribbon that connects the LCD is VERY exposed when the LCD is out away from the camera. My X-PRO3 had a protective bit over the ribbon on it's (odd) flip down LCD. To fix this, I put two layers of electrical tape on the ribbon to help protect it. The other quirk (though minor) is that the strap lugs are the dumb X-A1 style...to fix that, I just made 'strap extenders' to use with my Peak Design Anchor Links. Problems solved and this is the camera that I've been waiting for Fuji to make since I first held my X-E2 and wished that it had the LCD of my X-T1 and the smaller size of my X-20.
    I like this camera so much that I sold all of my other X-E bodies. Traded my X-PRO3 for an X100V and WCL and also bought an X-T30...Now all three of my main bodies have the same sensor, processor and flip LCD...I can use all 18 of my lenses and also have leaf shutter and build in ND when I need them. Life if GOOD.

      Fujifilm never stated in their latest firmware that the screen bug was fixed but I’ve not had the issue since.

      @@StreetsWideOpen My X-E4 still 'flips' the image if I get my camera body to close to my human body with the LCD flipped out. IF I extend the LCD all the way out away from the camera, my body is not close enough to make the screen thinks I want to be in 'selfie' mode. Of course, pulling the LCD that far out away from the body makes me nervous, the LCD ribbon that connect the screen to the camera's processor is largely unprotected, but it is ONE option to keep the flipping down.

    I really enjoyed this and I can't agree with you more. I ordered this bad boy, still waiting for it but I know it will be great and that so many times people complain about things that are not that big of a deal and every Tom Dick and Harry just perpetuates the same complaints they heard from other people. This reminds me of how people complained so much about the Sony menu system and that they had to google to find settings etc. I spent an hour or two with mine to understand which settings are most relevant to me, set them up in the quick menu system and never had to go into the menu again unless I wanted to set something very, very specific. This camera is not meant to be another space ship with 10000 dials, switches and levers, it is for those who want a simple to use, powerful and COMPACT camera. When you put all these switches and bits and bobs in it will no longer be a compact camera. A small camera with big performance like this one has to make many compromises

    People complain about anything. I program a FN button for ISO and the AEL for film simulation. As for using manual or auto lenses I make two Custom settings C1 and C2 - How hard can it be. This is a great camera at a great price. Sure the Pro3 is a good, maybe better camera, but with a bit of customizing before you go out and you have a equally as good camera. Love the review. Liked and subscribed. I pre-ordered the X-E4 as soon as it was announced back in January. My first Fuji camera and a move from shooting Canon SLRs for years. I was sick of carrying heavy gear up mountains to take photos. I'm so happy I made the move to Fuji and love how compact the X-E4 is. I'm shooting with a load of vintage lenses and it's perfect, I don't notice the buttons missing as all the lenses (apart from the fuji 27mm pancake) are manual focus.

      @callmelewy I made the same move, from Canon to Fuji, so I'm glad I finally found someone who already has experience with the switch. Bought 2 lenses (10-24 and 55-200), and am looking for a small, light and compact body to complement it with. I assume you're shooting landscapes ('carrying up the mountains'). I'm considering the X-E4 or the X-S10, and am in doubt which one to buy. I never had a camera with ibis, so I'm not sure what it is I'm missing. Both my lenses are stabilised, but I'm unaware if you can compare this to the degree of stabilisation ibis offers. Stills with a telelens and ibis could be helpful, and I'm going to use the camera for video. Not in a run&gun style (I have a tripod), but for handheld shots ibis makes up for shake and jitter. My apologies for the long story.......:)

I also edit all my photos in-camera and can now do it pretty much blindfolded in seconds with the d-pad. It's honestly the main reason I'm still carrying around this beaten up XT20. Might be a bit late, but I can't agree with this mentality. I switched from sony to Fuji because of their easy access controls without going through menus (later, stayed for the image quality of course). To justify lack of features because you don't use them often is like saying my smartphone doesn't need to make phone calls anymore because I hardly use it to call people. I firmly believe to hold Fuji onto the Kaizen mindset we should always point out the good and the bad direction they're heading in. Just my 2 cents.

I own three Fuji X flagship bodies for pro work but I'm also a daily X-E user since 2012 with all three iterations and a X100 series user and the X-E4 did not impress me once I got it in my hands [except for the tilt screen].
    Now what was an instantaneous flick of a switch without taking your eye off the EVF and subject is now is a three step process in the menu > Not Acceptable! as I depend on dedicated controls for quick random settings I use constantly. Fuji over the years were at least consistent with amount of button/wheel control but this felt like an incomplete camera.
    Honestly this camera operates like my a6000, which I cant stand and is now collecting dust on my shelf.

      I don't always shoot in AF-S and on the X-E4 I press one button to open up Focus Mode and then flick the joystick once to select Manual. Even have it on the touchscreen, swipe and choose. That doesn't work for you and that is fine. For others like me, it is fine. "Not Acceptable"? Choose a camera body that you like, it's not rocket science.

    Hi Streets wide open! I am very pleased to hear your opinion on this beautiful looking camera! I have it on order myself, with the 27mm 2.8 lens, and cant wait to shoot with it! But please, can you tell me, just how small the EVF actually is on the XE4??? I have been trying to find out from several reviewers, and apparently it is actually very small, in fact smaller then the EVF on my old X100T, but is it usable? looking forward to your feed back, buddy. Keep shooting!

    • @blood_n_guts_murphy

      Apparently same as XE3 which is bad for approximately a third of people. The XE2 was bigger and much nicer to use as a glasses wearer. One reason I didn’t fancy the XE4, but its not a horrible EVF, you just need to line it up better and get closer, so it’s slower to use than a bigger one like on the XT3 which is 10 times better.

      I really don’t have a problem with the EVF, I know some don’t like it. I’ve used cameras with worse, I have no trouble lining it up or reading the information I have set. Not as good as the v but I don’t find it a problem.
      Try one out in store if you can.

      I agree about trying in store as everyone is different. I actually started considering an XT20 today to use with its similar flip screen and pretty much ignore the EVF. The XE4 having the moving LCD will at least make up for the small EVF.

    • @StreetsWideOpen

      I’m just assuming Fuji had fixed this in the latest firmware as my screen hasn’t had the issue since. I’ve been constantly using it with the screen flipped out as well, if mine was still doing it I think I would seriously think about sending it back. I’m going to keep trying it with the screen out to be sure.

    your the one "moaning" about people who want a reasonable amount of key switches. Fuji went El cheapo with this, I stand by wanting a another function button and real switch for SCM in front, and rear dial.... Many like me hate swipe commands and constant menu diving

  • @marknadirworx

    how you gonna say a 3-4 click step is the same as 1?? just because u like shooting auto not everybody does. there r many shooting styles. if this was the only minimalist body it'd be ok for those that dont care about buttons but most fuji shooters got in the system because of the buttons. yes buttons r good they save time, having to go into the menus for basic control is steps backwards.. ps that was just an ignorant statement in the beginning, only makes sense for people that dont change their settings on a regular. just get a normal point and shoot if you shoot auto like that..

    • @fredbloggs545
      @fredbloggs545 3 года назад +1

      There was no ISO dial on the X-E1, 2 or 3 yet you don't complain about that. ISO is one side of the exposure triangle and far more important than a Focus Mode selector, yet the mythical "most fuji shooters" you claim to speak for were not bothered about missing an absolutely critical ISO dial off all of the X-E camera models. You had to use a programmable button for ISO!
      It is not, "a 3-4 click step" to swap Focus Mode. If switching Focus Mode is important to you then it is ONE button press and ONE flick of the joystick to switch from S to M. It is ONE button press and ONE flick of the joystick to switch back from M to S. Of course you can assign it to the touchscreen or have it in the Q menu, or even have a custom settings than when switched also puts the camera into manual focus.
      I have both the X-E3 and X-E4 so know what I am talking about.

    Seems that it has that lovely yellow tinted LCD that they all have now since the X-T2.
    It a disgrace they can’t even calibrate them before they leave the factory. B&W should be black and white.. not sepia. People having issues with LCD/EVF being yellow tinted all over.

    • @fredbloggs545
      @fredbloggs545 3 года назад +1

      I don't see sepia on my X-E3 or X-E4. You are seeing the colour profile used for this video not the actual colour of the LCD when seen with your eyes. The black camera body looks yellow/brown on this video so the LCD will too.

    • @StreetsWideOpen
      @StreetsWideOpen  3 года назад +1

    Sad to see this model has a yellow warming tint on the lcd as well. Since 2019 Fujifilm have ceased to calibrate their lcds and they all have this shitty warming tint so even the b&w acros looks a sepia color. Only GFX is calibrated to perfect color just like the X-T1 and others until 2018 were when sold. Now they don’t give a shit about the colour and people who actually care.
