    Love my X-E4. I was really disappointed in the lack of controls when it came out, but then I realised I didn't need many... so I bought it, and haven't looked back.

    I decided on this as my very first camera because of the minimalism. When I was researching other cameras, all the button and dials on them made them kind of intimidating. I didn’t even know the difference between aperture, iso and all these other terms. I bought this camera October of last year (2022) and I bring it with me everywhere. I love it. Since I haven’t handled any other cameras, I dont really feel like I’m missing out on all these extra buttons and dials

  • @GrainGaze
    @GrainGaze Год назад +85

    Another thing to keep in mind with this underrated little camera is that every C mode that you set from C1 to C7 saves all your settings including focus type and on top of that you have an extra slot for P (Program Mode) where the camera chooses settings. There is also a slot for no settings. So you end up having like 8-9 custom modes you can easily switch between, kind of like the dials on the X-H2 series. If you assign all functions to the screen, the lack of buttons isn’t all that bad!

    • @shred3005
      @shred3005 Год назад +12

      Also I use the custom C1, C2, C3 to be assigned to the different manual lenses I have which do not have electronic contacts. I name the lens in the custom settings (eg “TTart 35mm” for C1 or “TTart 50mm” for C2) and when I change to one of those lenses I just set the correct C setting under the Q menu and that puts the correct lens name into EXIF data for the image files with that lens.

    Ok folks, here's the thing: I upgraded from an X-E2s to the X-E4 and also was afraid I was gonna miss all the buttons etc. but one really doesn't need them all. And all the comments of people who actually have and use the camera support that. The angst is only with those who haven't tried it yet. I was a heavy back button focus user and was so afraid of not having the mode switch but I don't need it. I now use AF almost always because it is really reliable. Even when fishing street photos on a static scene I just set the focus point where I would have prefocused in MF in the past (to make sure focus doesn't get messed up).
    Have the focus mode on the top Fn button, ISO on the front dial, jpg settings in Q menu, done. Concentrate on photos not on buttons.
    Only thing is the buttons on the X-E4 are a little bit too flush/tiny.

    OK Fuji - You have proved that you can make the world's best 18mm f//1.4 lens but it's as big as the x-E4 body! Now the original 18mm f/2 compact lenses are selling for a fortune! What we really need is a replacement 18mm f/2 WR version as a 'pancake' lens for around $400. Oh - and a silver version would be nice!

    I'm really happy I minimalized from xt3 to xe4. The software options make so up for missing dials and I focus more on the scene. I use the thumb rest and a wrist strap that's basically just a flat waxed shoe lace looped through the lid. I cut it the perfect size so I can let the camera dangle from my hand and when I raise it to my eye the camera and buttons fall naturally into perfect place on their own. Most fun and convenient shooting experience ever!

    Never gave the X-E4 a second glance when it was released. I have the X-E2s and X-E3 for my small bodies.
    Bought Fujifilm for the knobs and dials, so a camera without them (AF Mode, really???) Is a non-starter. Also, as a left eye shooter, I have disabled all touchscreen functions because my nose would constantly be making some swipe or tap and change things just from viewing through the finder. So touchscreen work-arounds don't work for my shooting.
    This video did remind me though... how great is the X-E2? A real pinnacle in the series.

    Some content creators provide awesome info and give off a very genuine warmth, that supersedes the gear they use.

    I’ve been following your channel since the early days, but the supportive comment you dropped on a peers video, who openly discussed their trials and struggles over this last year, gave audiences across both channels an opportunity to see a genuinely kind soul.

    I’m so happy I bought this one. My 10-year old Nikon 1 and lenses were stolen when my studio was robbed this summer. I was so sad because I really loved that camera that everyone else seemed to hate.
    I don’t mind the lack of grip because I have little hands, and since I’m coming from Nikon I don’t miss buttons I never had. This is a major upgrade for me and I already love it so much.
    Thanks for all the tips, especially about customization. I am having fun trying out different settings. I bought mine with the 23mm f2, but I ordered the 18-55, too. I’m no photographer, but I like taking photos of my work in my studio space, and I miss having a real camera.

    I bought my daughter an X-E3 back in the day because she loved taking photos on her iPhone and I wanted her to have "a real camera". I had an X-T3 but I wound up borrowing hers a lot because of much of what was said in this video. I got one for myself to put in my backpack when I traveled for work (which was a lot) so that I had a good camera with me at all times. But at the end of the day, the improvements in the iPhone camera and the fact that I always have my iPhone in my pocket meant that I sold the X-E3 and put the money toward an iPhone 13 Pro Max. I'm glad I did.

    Thanks for this. I've sold all my other fuji bodies and now just run with this as my travel camera. Strong suggestions: (1) thumb grip with a piece of fishing line tied to the strap lug just in case the grip slips off the camera; (2) cage for use on full day shoots (for grip) or if the camera is going onto a tripod; (3) Pelican case iM2050 (I can get SIX prime lenses in the same small box as the body, with careful planning!). Major bummer... this camera is one of the only Fuji cameras that does not support tethering; I don't think any of the reviews discuss that.

However, if it is purchased new with the WR 27mm it does represent good value for money. Me, I will stick with my X-E3 and original 27mm or TTartisans 27mm. Much better value for money and usability. It has a small grip (that can come off with time)
    It isn't as cluttered as previous X-E cameras.
    It has a better viewfinder.
    It's almost perfect really. The only thing it needs to be perfect is a flippy screen, for versatility.

    For a stabilised video lens for a small system, one should really consider the humble nifty XC15-45mmF3.5-5.6 OIS PZ over the XF18-55mm as the PZ zoom has the advantages of being super light, notably shorter when off (only the two pancake primes are shorter!), and offers 2-speed smooth power zooming suitable for video, is cheaper (cha-ching), and in my view is more useful as it goes wider to 15mm which is more important than 45mm vs 55mm at the long end, I think. The glass is good for 4K. Perfect! At least on the X-T3 (I don't know about the X-E range, not on the X-A7), in photo mode (only) the exact focal length in mm is displayed on the screen/EVF when zooming, which would be neat for beginners to become familiar with exact focal lengths. The downsides? Although focus is fast and silent, the power zoom is noisy, so it is only good for zooming video that has music (or voice) laid over in post, or an isolated mic. For a stationary focal length when filming it's fine. The other downside it has no aperture ring, which is a pain on minimalist bodies, but hey, this lens is a minimalist too! Yes, its apertures are a bit less open at max too, which is Ok for video, but it's light. It comes in silver or black. One other annoyance, on the X-T3 it power zooms to the short off position every time entering review mode (!), but not on the X-A7, I don't know about the X-E line. That's my mini review.

It is a big lens especially for the x-e4 but it is so freakin’ sharp wide open and a bokeh beast. And the price is fantastic. I’m swapping between the XF 23mm f/2 and the Viltrox. I also picked up the TTartisans 50mm f/1.2 manual lens since I had never tried a manual lens before and for $100, it is an awesome lens. So I wanted an x100v but I am really enjoying the ability to changes lenses. I mostly use it for street photography and pics of my family as we go out but I have shot some portraits with the Viltrox.
      As for my Sony a7c, I’m loving it as well with the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 lens. I obviously don’t mind smaller camera bodies with big lenses on them. The Tamron is amazing as well and offers so much flexibility with that range. I also have the FE 20mm f/1.8 for wide shots.
      Having the film simulations on the x-e4 makes it very easy and fun to shoot with. I enjoy the a7c as well but always have to use Lightroom to get it where I want it. Although some shots are great sooc with the right lens. I did buy the extra grip for the x-e4 and a small rig cage for the a7c to help with the Tamron. Both bodies are not that different in size. Full frame is great but if you don’t want to mess with editing as much then I would go for the x-e4.
      I want to get a Fujifilm xh2 to try the 40 megapixels but I am sure I will never sell my x-e4. For Sony, I would love an a7rV but waiting to see what the a7cii will bring. I’m a hobbyist that is just starting to make some money with photography so I will stick with these two cameras for now. I hope this helps.

    The X-E4 was on backorder or unavailable almost from launch. 2 years on it's already been discontinued, and not a word about a successor. Some people with inside access to Fuji HQ claim they were disappointed with the E4 sales, but how can that be an issue when they were almost never available to be purchased? Personally, I think this is the end of the road for the X-E series. They've threatened it before, and this camera's poor layout and missing features suggests they're just not behind this line. Then there's the X-100V which is off the charts popular... and they also discontinued that. At least a successor to the 100V is certain. Meanwhile, dealers have piles of X-T5's, X-H2's, and X-Pro-3's that no one wants. Exactly what the hell is going on at Fuji?
