The comment about the font size in the menus made me laugh out loud, because I completely agree! If the narrow font is readable, just make it all the same!
The Fujifilm menus are by far the most mental and nobody else even comes close 😆 There's not even just two fonts, I think they straight-up have the Instax trademarked logo as a menu item on the X-H2S, and it can't even connect to most of their current Instax printer lineup 🧐
Genuinely had me giggling ahahahah
The complaint about the menu typography is perfectly justified.
LOL!
It does matter if you connect with a camera or not... I had the V, but after a couple of years of using it, I never once enjoyed the experience. So I swapped it for an X-E4, and that's the camera that brings a smile to my face.
The neck strap trick is brilliant because even for someone with a not particularly brilliant motor coordination, it took me ten seconds and a single try to figure it out.
More X100VI videos please! It’s the camera that got me back into photography after 15 year hiatus. You’re my favorite photographer and RUclipsr and I would love to see you cover it more. ❤
I've found the X100 series to be a type of special treatment for photo hobbyists who have, for whatever reason, fallen out of love with their hobby. Most probably because one has fallen victim to the constant gear hustling in the (social) media, has accumulated mountains of gear which is to heavy and/or expensive to take out and ends up collecting dust. As a consequence, one doesn't use the cameras at all. Enter X100 which is so pretty you just have to pick it up and use - people ask you about it all the time which just adds to the excitement. After a while, you're into photography again and you don't mind taking a camera with you. At the same time, you're realizing: Actually, my trust old (--name your brand here--) wasn't so bad after all. Also, it was actually more fun to use and produced better results in this specific situation than that flashy X100. You end up returning to your old system / or another system. But a SYSTEM. You keep the X100 along for a while. Just in case. Then you realize the still crazy used prices and sell it - defending its original purpose because of the great resell value. And the cycle resets. That was my experience exactly and from what I am hearing from others >> not that uncommon.
That's an interesting comment.
6:40 that is a crime against humanity
the lettering and font size/stretch differences? If so, I agree whole heartedly
Even though it is aesthetically ugly, it is actually clever. This way, the absurd abbreviation mumbo-jumbo can be avoided, which often plagues other brands' menus. For example, this menu says:
- "Instax printer connection setting", instead of
- "Insx. prnt. conn. stg." or so... 🙂
Blew my mind with the neck strap trip. Borrowing that idea for sure. I have always just wrapped it around my hand too. Thanks for that!
WOW! Blown away by your strap solution! I'm twirling like you, since years! Never even thought about doing it differently! lol! Thank you so much! Changing my life! :D
I've got one and sold my X100V to fund it. I love the new one, battery life is great for me, the upgrades truly are upgrades. One remaining irritation however is the exposure compensation dial. It desperately needs a lock button in the centre of the dial. Every time I take it out of my bag it's on +3 or -3! Normally use C so that I can change exp via the finger dial but it flips round in the bag so no end of first shot under/overexposed (they've all done this). Perfect night out/low maintenance single camera. As for focal length, the 50mm adaptor is excellent. Get on the list now as the wait for that is as bad as the camera. Hope your camera arrives soon, luckily I ordered mine 3 minutes after the email arrived!
Just returned from the Biltmore Estate in NC here in the US...took the 100vi and the WCL 100II and loved using it as my only camera.
Thanks for the video ... Nice to see you giving the Fujifilm a second go. The ironic thing is that the features of the x100vi you mentioned are all present in the x100v - built in ND filter, same iso selector, same lens, EVF and OVF (and a hybrid view), battery life of the x100v has never been bad. Can't comment on the x100vi. Main upgrade as you said Is the 40mp sensor and ibis. Other than that, they are the same! It's great we all like/ get used to different systems, be a boring world otherwise. BTW, I loved the neck strap trick... Cheers
holy shit! that wrist strap trick has just changed my life i can’t lie.
I fecking hate the X100’s. I’ve borrowed/ used them on many occasions over the years. They’ve always been a feckin delight to use, and a quality bit of kit. Forever, I’ve been promising myself the previous (or earlier years models). Have i got one yet? Have I fuck. I’m an idiot. My pockets now aren’t deep enough to pay the current used prices. you aren’t helping my angst. cheers mate. 😁👍🏼
I'd definitely go for one of the older models, mate. I picked up an X100F two years and I still absolutely love it.
Should take a look at a used x-pro, they're still pricey, but far less so than the x100's, and are a better/more versatile camera, slightly less portable though if that's a concern
I'd rather shit bricks than pay out that much for the X100VI
A used X-E4 with the 23mm F2 gives you something very similar to the X100V, for less
Same. I've been thinking about getting one since the T dropped, and Kai convinced me back when they were Digital Rev in Hong Kong.
I always held off though, the V was the first time the value proposition actually aligned, new lens, weather resistant. The VI jumped the shark a bit, and the F wasn't quite there with the 24mp and a the old lens. They both have the same issue, too many megapixels for the lens design.
I'd go for the T but I got the X70 a few years back and it was the same camera basically, just a hit quicker AF, because of the lens.
Please make another photo book. I feel like you have a TON of great more recent photos and find them extremely inspiring.
I would love to see you make another video on your photo editing process specifically using the fuji files
0:56 I aways used my neck strap as a wrist strap too, but you actually just changed my life with this tip
designer here- no you're absolutely correct, people who switch fonts for the sake of content volume should go to jail. fix the content.
No, u.
@kids11111 You forgot to add your title before you commented. 😀
The strap struggle at the beginning spoke to my soul haha.
That strap hack is fooking genius ! It's well over 40 yrs since i picked up my first SLR (Praktica from memory) , and i cant believe that i haven't tried this before. Mind blown.
The neck/ wrist strap, I do the same thing and have done for years. You're not the Muppet because you still came up with the better option!
Which rope strap are you using in this video? What length is it?
I also used the neck strap for my wrist, but after years it was too uncomfortable for me. I've had a wrist strap for a week and NOW you come up with this tip! Too late!😅
Just remembered a time, prolly 50 years ago. I was cycling in Folkestone, and a running down from the station, turned a bit too sharply, and a camera he had on it's strap round his neck/shoulder, swung out and hit the steel railings. The SLR and lens parted company and the lens bounced across the road!
For us Boomers, this camera does not look like a toy. It looks like the first serious camera we started using.
I just wanted to listen to you talk while I worked, but I walked away with a great tip for my neck strap!
Old school ISO dial! Seems like a sensible use of a small area, which is why it was standard on lots of film cameras.
neck strap-to-wrist strap maneuver is truly a game-changer
I have several Fuji cameras. TheX-T1 got me back into photography. Well designed, well made and the best UI and ergonomics of any camera brand. Personal preference obviously but they are always a joy to use.
Hi Mr Popsys! Where did u get your camera strap from? Thank you!
1:00 made me audibly gasp. i think you've just changed my life
Masterful cold open with music.
I’ll have to settle for an X-T5 or T50, but all of the buzz over the X100VI has me seriously considering a Fujifilm camera for the first time ever. Two notes: I agree, all the Fujifilm models do look and feel a bit like toys, or at least not a very serious camera, but I can easily get past that part because the small and light form factor is a bonus for EDC use. The other thing I’ve noticed is kind of a double-edged blade effect - and that’s even though the beautiful color and fun film sims are universally appreciated, all of the example images I see in videos like this are starting to look exactly alike. That great Fujifilm film look is so strong that it seems to overpower a photographer’s personal style. For that reason, I think Fujifilm cameras can be wonderfully inspiring and encourage you to shoot more, but they may also limit your own creative growth. For me, Fujifilm = a fun camera.
The intro it's mindblowing! Thanks for the trick!
Hello James ! I wanted to know if you got a video explaining what setup you use to shoot your videos ? Or at least what products ? I imagine it’s your 24mm coupled with your a7IV but I guess you’re using a gimbal ? Thank you !!!
I own the X100VI and I can‘t complain about the battery life at all. I was using it for a whole day when I was in Madrid, took around 500 photos even in burst mode and I had around 30% left at the end of the day. I wasn‘t shooting any video, just photo.
The different size lettering makes a lot of sense, IMHO. You see more words at first glance.
Fun fact, the technique you mention at the very beginning is called the lark's head knot. It is really common in kite flying to attach line to the kite because its fast to tie, tightens with tension, but is easy to untie after.
I shoot wildlife and astro, so the X100 VI is absolutely not for me, but I tend to agree about the styling. Especially from the front it reminds me of that no-name junk you get for $100 on amazon, although im guessing the 'inspiration' is the other way around. At least the fuji takes quality images. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And the menu font! How did that happen??? That better be fixed in a firmware update..
35mm at 1.5x is a 50mm equivalent for Full Frame. I just did a video with the 55mm Zeiss and 50mm Sony Crop and I wouldn't recommend to vlog using those lens especially in crop mode. Cheers!
Think it’s 23mm so the equivalent of a 35mm. There is a wide converter that’s the equivalent of 28mm and a tele converter that’s the equivalent of 50mm.
As the inbuilt mics and horizontal only screen limit its use for vlogging a better option is probably the XS20 and kit zoom.
Or for most amateur video makers the amazing iPhone 15 pro max and a rig…..
Damn that's pretty cool regarding the strap idea! Just tried with my rope strap on my 100V and works a charm thanks 😂
That wriststrap hack is embarrassingly clever, will never use anything else on my smaller cameras anymore.
Don't forget to purchase the water-resistant accessory. Since you love a little rain lol
Man I just realized I haven’t seen your videos in at least a year. That’s wild how RUclips be hating
I use the fuji pancake lens on my fuji X Pro 2.
I truly hope your attempt to hate it goes awry. Would love to see you using it. Greetings from Guatemala, the "Land of Eternal Spring".
I was quite excited about this camera but the more RUclips videos I watch the more convinced I am that I should hold on to my Sony A7iii until the next Fujifilm iteration. I WANT a flip-out lcd screen for my next camera. It's not up for discussion.
Thanks James. I'm happy with my A7CR and small Sigma I-Series primes. Whatever FL I need in a similar (but 61MP full frame) form factor. No wait either.
Thank you for informing us that you have no interest in unique features of the X100VI. Useful that.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc I'm sure the X100V is a fine camera. I previously shot an earlier X100S, so I am aware of some of the series features. I was just sharing my opinion that this is a fixed focal length camera, and there are some limitations with that. And the size of the A7CR (or A7CII) is not much different. Hope I didn't offend you 😉
Right there with you on using a neck strap as a wrist strap
The black may look like a toy but the silver looks aesthetic. In fact, the black looks better than black Ricoh GRIII.
Ricoh is plastic construction. Literally a toy.
@@Thisnotmysandwichthe ricoh gr is magnesium not plastic
Hey, James! Did you use your presets to all your raw photos taken with X100VI?
The font comment was hilarious and sooo true. 😂
In this location I would prefer 50mm.
Personally I would use this camera more for street photography in high density areas.
Greeting from Madeira. You would probably like it here. So many human made things in a very green nature.
I’ll be there the beginning of May😊
I used to live there, I really miss it! Amazing place
Hi! Is it Madeira on these photos?
I watched this, not only because I subscribe but also because I thought I recognised where you were from holidays 40 years ago. Anyway, suspicions confirmed when I saw the name of the dinghy “pride of moelfre”. I think all landscapers should tell us where they are and if they don’t, they can go to jail too.
Love the channel.
Blimey, I grew up near there. Used to camp in a friend’s garden in summer and go to the chip shop that was called Knockers (teenage sniggering). Haven’t been there in years. I love my X100t and can’t believe what they sell for given what I paid for it, used, some five years ago.
Inspiring shots! So, I'm going out today with my Nikon Z fc from MBP on a street full of color, junk, begging for attention. And the menu tech should get life in prison and required to read books with the smallest fonts available.😊
If I get another note that my preorder is not expected to be filled in May...I believe mine will get cancelled as well. I also was not a fan of the x100v (mostly the lack of IBIS didn't lend itself to the way I like to shoot). Giving this one a shot but not going to wait too long for it.
I too, do not use neckstraps.
when neckstraps were all that were available, I too, would wind them about my wrist.
but
I also don't wear shoes that need to be tied, so that wouldn't be a reason to
use one to free up both hands.
that's what pockets are for.
I do have wriststraps. I don't use them often; only when it feels like I am in a position where the camera
might slip out of my hands into an irretrievable place.
like water. or a chasm, with water.
water kills cameras.
it's my favorite one-handed camera that I own.
I love the neck strap - wrist strap tip xD
I enjoyed 2 years with my x100v, sold it to get an x100vi. While awaiting delivery I unexpectedly landed an open box "used" Sony a7CR. Then the x100vi arrived. What a difficult choice of cameras: my a7Rv, a7CR, and the x100vi. Quickly I found the a7CR to be my favorite, replacing both the a7Rv and the x100vi. Coupled with the f2.5 40m G it may weigh 100g more than does the x100vi (with its needed filter adapter and UV filter to complete its weather sealing) but it handles infinitely better, has better EVF and a fully articulating LCD, better MF, better AF-C. Too much of the x100vi is devoted to film simulations for which I have zero interest. I shoot RAW, process carefully, and never wish to have film simulations. I sold the x100vi weeks after receiving it (sold it in 17 min, for a bit more than it cost new from B&H).
I love film simulations. Compose, frame, and use the JPEG. Just like film. We never had pray and spray shooters with film. Every photo taken was a careful and deliberate choice.I can see why RAW is more appealing for unskilled photographers who try to compensate for their inadequacies in post.
Where can I get that strap?
I was wondering have you tried the Nikon Zf ?
Honestly, the x100vi boosts my productivity so much.
Thanks to keep the 10 to 15 minutes format 👍
There is even a video „tutorial“ on how to use a neck strap properly as a wrist strap. Basically put your hand through, go around once on the right, once around the left and you are good to go.
I got my X100vi on release day (very lucky), and 11 days later it was on it's way back to Fuji faulty, they had it for over a month and I have just received it back after repair, fingers crossed it's OK now
Welcome!
Hi James, could you tell us the brand of neck strap (it appears to be a braided one) that you're using? I just received my X100VI and would like a strap something like the one you were showing at the beginning of the video. Thanks!
Its funny how we try and convince ourselves we need new gear. Do you still have the Ricoh that you bought with the 4omm fixed focal length? I would have thought that between your Sony and Ricoh... you would be sorted...
Sure you’ve talked about it before, but where did you get your camera strap? (I love it!)
In older videos, he said he got it on Etsy.
6:10. What are you doing to be constantly charging? I’ve used all versions of the X100 line except the S.. walk around with daily.. and get days of battery life.
Hi James, I am in a quandary too about the X100VI. I think it is the best retro looking camera on the market with those lovely manual knobs. The jury is still out until all the hype has settled down,.
If that is all you want then get a X100S, T, F....or X-E1, 2, 3....or an XPro etc
I pre-ordered one of these and it has fit into my life perfectly - I shoot mostly when out with friends and doing other things, photography always being unfortunately secondary - My Z6 was just too large to deal with in that situation and missing shots because friends wouldn't wait - or missing shots because I was aiming a very obvious camera at said friends made them a bit too aware of it and killed the candid moments. (don't even get me started on how cumbersome it felt to find a place to put the camera away if I didn't want to go through the full process of getting it all back in my bag just to sit for a coffee)
So the Z6 is now my "bigger planned trips" camera - and usually gets the pleasure of shooting landscapes with a telephoto because I have the X100VIs 35mm otherwise and loved this combo in a recent wales trip!
then the X100VI is the casual weekend camera that makes photos and carrying gear easy... stopping for that coffee? shove the camera in a pocket.
I love the neck strap, wrist strap tip xD
I do the same thing with my neck strap with just wrapping it around my wrist!
Bought the X100v, sold it.. regretted it. Bought the X100VI. The IBIS for me is the gamechanger, I love long exposure during the day (which you can do with the built in ND filter). The most important thing is however how people react to this camera. When you point a DSLR (or DSLR looking camera) at someone they will change their demeaner, with this camera you get a different response. I just like taking this camera with me more than my other cameras.
I would prefer it to be 28 with crop modes at 35 and 50mm though. Would just find it more useful. However the lens would probably be bigger. So it's all good.
Thanks for the neck strap tip buddy!
Months? I ordered my X100VI on the morning of 2/20. There are 1,000,000 preordered. I may have to wait a year or two for my camera to arrive. Annoying indeed.
I too am considering canceling my preorder. One or two year wait is crazy. I may have more luck preordering the XT50 when announced.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
1 Mio. pre orderes are probably pure fiction. Even the 400k in China were just some lottery tickets to get to buy one. But yeah, its annoying. Fujifilm wants to up their production again in 4-5 loooong months. So the waiting is not over. 😭
I’ve got the V and bought it as soon as it was released. I’ve not been disappointed and I love it even though everything else I have is Nikon this all in one package is superb imo 😀
Your videos always make me want to go out and shoot. This is of course my highest compliment ever. Cheers.
BTW I want to try a new daily camera. Has to be something other than Canon and under $500. Most importantly it has to be fun. Suggestions anyone?
When I started watching James he shot and loved Panasonic! Good options at under £500 if you look at older models and m43 eg G90, GX8, GX9.
I’m debating whether to get the 100VI or the XT5. I like the simplicity of the VI and it reminds me of my grandpas old Minolta HiMatic 7s. He always had that thing around his neck. It had a fixed lens. There’s a certain joy to simple shooting, but I’m planning on doing mostly nature and wildlife photography so the long focal length lenses are a no brainer.
Interesting video as always. There is so much hype for the VI features. Not a camera for me, having owned the V. I have a XT5, XT1 and now a XE1. That will do, for now, good luck with your decision.
I think the only reason James ordered that camera is because it's the thing to have. Without the hype, he wouldn't have given it a second thought. GAS is real.
In this video, James invents a girth hitch.
I really love the photos in this vid. Was it the Sony you took them with? If not then hate it all you want, the photos speak by themselves how good this little fellow is.
Love your photos, do you mind, tellng us the recipe you are using? :)
I think it can be said, for what it's worth, that your photographs still look like your photographs. What that observation contributes to your decision to own or not? Can't help. Frankly, when the review -- of anything technical really, anywhere (it's particularly awful with coffee gear reviews, grinders in particular) -- devolves into aesthetics, well minor aesthetics or "what I *really* don't like..." we're getting into the more noisy part of the content; I tend to turn off or down at least. That said, I envy your proximity to these beautiful locations. The photos are wonderful. Thanks.
Great images James. I’m sure it’s a fab camera but to me it looks cheap from the front. I’d get bored by the fixed focal length and does an APSC really need 40mp? I’ll stick to my Sony RX100 mkiii for a compact and my a7ii & a6500 for interchangeable lenses.
The ND filter is very handy for stills. Battery life for me has been better than on the V.
You'll have plenty of time to chop and change your mind over the do i want one or shall i cancel it. Two months + so far for me. Neck strap tip, Doh why hadn't i thought of that myself lol.
There’s very little to hate about this series of camera. It looks cool, jpegs look great for those who don’t want to edit, and it’s small. My only gripe with it that was a dealbreaker is the manual focus experience. While being a film and leica Leica m user I just couldn’t stick with the autofocus of this camera. I much prefer manual focus lenses. Otherwise this camera is almost perfect.
That neck strap to wrist strap tip. Boof! Mind blown.
Good review. I've tried a few "cult cameras: GR Digital (the original - lens stopped extending), GR II (dust), the original X100 (autofocus problems and just didn't get on with it, despite loving 35mm focal length and getting some good photos). Luckily, most Leicas are well out of budget, even used, so I didn't go down that path. I think cult cams can be overhyped and can more easily disappoint than something less exciting. My most fun camera lately has been a Lumix GF6 that fits in my pocket and produces photos I'm pleased more often than the GR or the X100 did. Cost a lot less too.
What? Call yourself a YouChoob maker? You aren't even wearing a back-to-front idiot cap! You didn't shout at me! You didn't refer to me in the plural. What on Earth...? A breath of fresh air. Thank you very much.
"It's not mine.... but I've ordered one".
Classic James 😂
Yech. I tend to shoot telephoto. No thanks. Also, that ISO dial goes back to film days. It's fine, but not particularly impressive.
I have heard that its capable of shooting some sort of “compressed raw” (HEIF?). Would be interesting to see the mobile editing capabilities, if possible.
The ND filter is more useful for photography than you think. To maximise bokeh quality you should really use moderate mechanical shutter speeds… to maximise dynamic range you should consider turning on DR400%. This latter setting sets ISO to 400 minimum… and both together means you need the ND to reduce light, especially for wider apertures.
You've made a typo on the ISO. On the X100VI at DR400% it is minimum ISO *500* (and DR200% starts at ISO 250)
You've obviously typed DR400 and then the same 400 for ISO :)
@@JackBurton-qp4hc thanks for the clarification! I’ve only had the camera two weeks (usually use Sony and Canon), so I’m still working on the setup. Impressed so far.
@@albedo0point39
Ah ok, here's a free tip from a long time Fuji user.
If shooting jpegs and using ACROS then you want higher ISO, the higher the ISO the more grain you get.
ACROS alters level of grain depending on ISO setting. Higher ISO = more grain.
Shoot ACROS at ISO 3200 to see what I mean.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc thanks!
Actually this is my second Fuji… my other Fuji is a GSW690iii 😆. I’m a big fan of Astia, since that was my go-to film… need to try the others.
I tried the X100f a number of times, but always ended up selling it. So I skipped the "V", but I do have a "VI" on order will to give it another chance. That all said, I think the XT-50 could be a better overall buy.
