    Where I live a D8 costs $5,000 but a brand new D850 costs $3200. The D850 is a well made beast of a professional camera. I don't do sports, wildlife or video.....for me the D850 wins hands down. I don't have much use for all the tech wizardry and features in a mirrorless camera and I dislike the viewfinders on most of them.

    You have to underexpose the D850 a little bit. Something like -0.3 or -0.5 to match the Z8. If you match the exposure correctly, you will see that there is no difference at all!

      Yeah that seems to be the case (or overexpose the Z8 a bit). Seemed odd to me that the two cameras didn’t produce identical exposures at the same settings

    I love having the "latest and greatest" gear, but the hard truth is, while the technology advances, the outcomes are so minimally different that it's rarely worth the upgrade until a "game changer" comes along. The D850 was a game changer. The low light capability was better than every other camera in its class at that price point. The large sensor gave unprecedented dynamic range and the ability to crop images while retaining remarkable detail. The form and function of the body and controls were near perfection, and the bottom line is it still produces excellent images that are making me money every day of the week. :)

    This was excellent - thanks! The only additional comparison I would have liked would have been shooting at 800 or 1600 ISO in a very low light situation. That of course is when the high ISO is actually used, and I wonder if the differences between the two cameras would have been more pronounced.

  • @dtcho100
    @dtcho100 7 месяцев назад +4

    The commentary keeps on essentially stating that the photos between the two cameras look pretty much the same. However, to me, the colors on the D850 looked consistently more vibrant, while the Z8 looked more muddy. Also, for the dynamic range, I give the slight nod to the D850. However, the Z8 clearly would be far superior for wildlife, action, sports, and video.

    You can equalize exposure of a set of images by selecting the set of images. Then press crtl+alt+shift+m. That will then adjust all the images to have the same exposure, as the image you have in focus.

    No Progress in Sensor Power, thats disappointing. I was surprised that even my old D800 can keep up that well with the new Cameras. AF and Video is another story, but for photography, damn they seem have come to a stop in terms of sensor performance.

      If you notice the camera advertisement these days, they will not brag about better image quality but mostly about the video capabilities etc. the reason for that is they haven't been able to improve anything for the last 10+ years, so when it comes to basic digital photography these days an older 10-15yo camera will do more than great. I keep watching these videos because I want to justify a purchase of Z8 but I mostly do photography and my D500 (which is the equivalent of D850 just a cropped sensor) is such a beast that I feel like I will never sell it and I can't justify the upgrade. Not to mention that one battery charge, depending on the image settings etc, can give me literally thousands of photos (once I took like 8000 photos with just 50% battery charge at some event).
      So yes if I didn't have a camera at all I might have started with Z8 because it's quite fancy and definitely a strong machine, but now that I see almost no difference I think it doesn't make sense to upgrade

    The F lens used on the Z8 has crimpled it's true potential(Dumb Down). I've done similar test with the correct lens for each camera. Z8 S24-70 2.8mm & D350 F 24-70 2.8mm and there is a lot of different in the two. I've tried my F lens on the Z8 and I get similar results as you. It is not anything like the correct lens. I have quite a few up to date F lens an adapter they do pretty good but not like the correct lens. It's something about older glass and the design of the lens not being the same for both lens for the type of camera. It's not always really Apple to Apple as one might think as I did also at one point. But I still use some of my F glass to fill lens gaps on my Z8 as I don't have a full line of Z lens yet, but working on it. LOL Was it worth getting the Z8; for me it was, Even as good as the D350 [IS] and it great , one of the best SLR ever made.(IMA and others) The Z8 still upped my game.

      I agree (850 owner). I never had a Z8 in my hands, but I think the most advantages of the Z series are the new lenses. I love the sizes of my 780 & 850 and the viewfinders, but I think the Z series has better lenses, which is technical the most relevant part for the quality on an image (more then sensors).

    I have never used the Z8 I actually own a D850 and an XT5 which finally enough is a couple of your videos. I think the D850 is still pound for pound one of the best cameras ever made, and I think the Z8 is a fantastic camera don't get me wrong even though I've never used it but I don't think we saw the leap in image quality that we thought we would see with the Z cameras. In fact, I think the Z7 and Z6 are rubbish to be really honest they are crap cameras but the Z7 Mark two and the Z8 and Z9 fantastic upgrades and they are well and truly great cameras. Okay that out of the way it is a fantastic camera but you can buy three 850s for one Z8 you need to think about that is the Z8 three times the better ...NOPE Z8 and 3 lenses will be 11 to 12K or more (in australia) D850 and 3 lenses in australia 4.5K ....... I know quite a few professional photographers still using a D8 50 because they know that the image quality is so good that they could get marginally better photos with the Z8 but it's very marginal. I know quite a few professional photographers still using a D850 because they know that the image quality is so good. Yes you're gonna get the benefits of all of the auto focus aspects but if you're shooting fairly still objects even studio work with models or you're doing general Photography I wouldn't be buying is that eight I'd buy a D8 50 and damn good glass and you're gonna get the good image quality you gotta remember the Z lenses are ridiculously overpriced as well for what they are. I'm sorry GFX lenses are way way better yet very similar prices where I am to the Z lenses. I find it extraordinary that Z lens sells for $2000 and I can buy GFX lens for that price and sorry but the GFX shits all over the Z8 it's not even in the same conversation for image quality not even close you should compare a Z8 to a GFX 50 and if you own a Z8 you'll be listing it on eBay within 10 minutes

On large prints , at 1000s of dpi prints , we used the nikon f mount pro lenses , this guy is probably using crap glass on d850 , they dont show facts , like the z85 f1.2. Gets left behind by the 85.1.4 F, yet they test the Z 1.2 against the nikon 85 1.8 budget lens 😄😄😄 cheesy , we showed the 1.2 z vs 1.4 f , the f is a pro lens , maybe thats why the 1.2 Z lens got traunced by it ,

      I used the same exact lens (Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR) for all of the images. On the Z8 I had the lens attached to the FTZ II adapter. For some reason Lightroom labelled the lens differently in the data in the top left of the images, and I'm not sure why. I also confirmed that the lens correction profile applied was not the issue causing the brightness difference. Could be that the shutter timing is slightly off on one of the cameras or the ISO is calibrated slightly differently between the cameras... or maybe the FTZII adapter had something to do with it... honestly not too sure.

    not sure if you have high iso NR off or the same for both. did you have active d lighting on for either. also the d850 shows more details in the shadows and is brighter in all the comparisons which means that you dont have to shoot the d850 at such a high iso and youll get less noise. I dont have either and not considering either. Im at the edge to leave nikon. I feel the regurgitated 24mp sensor is their feckup. they will will become the next penatx mark my work. im still on F. not sure if ill move to sony or canon. btw, 70% are still on F. thats because nikon doesnt deliver something in the $2500 thats tempting to make people move over. the z6/z7 i/ii was a complete failure and I feel they wont put the effort in to the z6iii to wow people. as nikon has always done "its just enough" mindset. they screwed up with the DF they screwed up with the d600 and even the d750. also the z6/z6 i/ii. I dont see them putting in the effort to wow anyone when r6ii/a7iv will be updated sooner and will leave nikon behind. nikon is the next pentax. they have fallen asleep. so few care to pay 4 and 6 grand for a camera. they should have released the z6iii first. not z8. and the same regurgitated 24mp. they should have used the d810 tweaked 36mp sensor. theyre not doing anything special with the zf nor the z6iii. watch and see. thats why theyre in a far away 3rd place and slowly dwindle away to minimal numbers. asleep and too slow to react.
