      Actually the entry for it indicates the Valor is faster and more maneuverable than the Harrower while still being armored, so the Valor would be able to flank or use its fighters to flank the Harrower, get behind it where it is vulnerable and take it out easily. Eckhardt left out a few things. They also appear to have very powerful shields and more often than not completely held their own against Harrowers and other ships.

    The Harrower proves itself worthy of being called a dreadnought pretty easily while the Valor Class Cruiser is better off as a starfighter carrier than an actual frontline capital ship slugging it out with other capital ships.

  • @jaredevans8263
    @jaredevans8263 3 года назад +47

    I think the firepower of the Valor was downplayed. You can't base the ship's firepower solely on the image/art because art doesn't always show the weapons in full detail. The Valor is described as follows: "The ship class served as the heaviest and most powerful warship in the Republic fleet, allowing it to match the Harrower-class dreadnought in terms of size and firepower but it was only armored where needed, allowing it to be faster and more agile than the Harrower." (Wookieepedia).
    So I think the Valor had just as many turbolasers and whatnot as the Harrower, however the Harrower can use its guns more effectively due to its wedge-shaped design. The Valor can't bring as many guns to bear in most directions, so the Harrower would have an advantage due to its design, but the advantage wouldn't be 2-3 times greater like stated in the video.
    I think the Valor's speed and agility makes up for its less efficient firepower design because the Republic wouldn't use it to counter the Harrower if it couldn't. The Republic would have built another ship class to counter the Harrower or they would have sent in waves of Valors to swarm Harrowers. Neither of which they did.

    • @Zeknif1
      @Zeknif1 2 года назад +7

      Actually… the Star of Coruscant appears to have been just such an attempt by the Republic to build something to counter the Imperial’s fleet. It would fall to a massive Sith Ambush above Hoth as the final result of a year-long campaign of espionage and subterfuge carried out by the Empire to ensure it could be destroyed before it could make a meaningful contribution to the war. The result is that a portion of Hoth’s surface would become a starship graveyard. It’s also worth noting that the Star of Coruscant and its escort vessels were loaded out with numerous experimental weapons. So there was definitely an effort to try to build a proper counter to the Empire’s Harrower. It also clues us in that the Republic has a significant industrial capacity as they were ultimately able to absorb such significant losses and still maintain some level of parity with the Imperial Navy soon after.
      I think the likeliest scenario is that while Imperial warships like the Harrower were better able to trade favorably against Republic Warships, they lacked the ability to efficiently replace losses as fast as they were incurred while the Republic could. The so called “waves of valor” would only occur much later in the Sith/Republic conflict when attrition against the Harrowers allowed the surviving and newly built Republic Valors to properly outnumber the remaining Harrowers and a far fewer number of newly built harrowers.

    • @jaredevans8263
      @jaredevans8263 2 года назад +2

      @@Zeknif1 you bring up good points. Tbh I think the Star of Coruscant was an attempt to counter Sith superweapon/fleet killer designs such as all the ones made by Darth Mekhis during the Great Galactic War and Cold War. Perhaps also as an undefeatable symbol of hope to boost morale across all Republic owned space, since the Republic was suffering tremendous losses.
      Looking back at the Valor cruiser, I now realize that it's hull shape and weapon placement does have the benefit of being able to shoot equal firepower at all angles including out the rear, which allows for greater versatility and positioning options than the Harrower. The lack of firepower blind spots and good amounts of higher quality starfighters would make the Valor an effective counter to the Harrower alone.
      I do think that the Star of Coruscant would have been an effective counter against large fleets of Harrowers, where a mere Pyrrhic victory at best could be achieved with Valors and other vessel classes. Basically a trump card to call upon when needed most

    • @Zeknif1
      @Zeknif1 2 года назад +4

      @@jaredevans8263 My biggest issue with the Valor is the combination of its armor profile with its engine placement. While it is a given that a space fairing vessel’s propulsion systems will be exposed when attacked from the rear, the Valor’s is also exposed from the front… and we aren’t even talking about tertiary propulsion… all of their propulsion systems are housed in the module jutting out from below the main hull. I would be able to forgive this had this area had significant armor to its sides and front… however, the front of the propulsion system housing is so completely exposed that much of it is exposed from the side profile as well (as well as much of the thruster components themselves). Attempting to maneuver the ship to protect this vulnerability only results in exposing the vulnerable, unarmored sections of the hull superstructure.
      The Likeliest scenarios for Harrower vs Valor are as follows:
      Short Range: Valor attempts to flank the Harrower attacking it with its broadside firepower… results are dependent on the gunnery of the Harrower in their ability to consistently target the exposed engine housing of the Valor, vs the Valor’s gunnery to consistently target the Harrower’s guns. This scenario is about the closest to parity the two ships will be as they’ll be limited to broadside firepower. Once the shields are down, the Harrower knocking out 2 or three of the Valor’s engines (assuming they are designed not to go up in a chain reaction) would bring the ships into parity as far as agility goes… which will quickly snowball into a Harrower win. If the Valor can drain the Harrower’s shields and knock out enough guns, the Valor will then have the option to park on the Harrower’s ass and target it’s most vulnerable section for an easy victory.
      Long-Range: Valor attempts to leverage its agility and the long travel time of the Turbolasers to evade Harrower volleys while returning fire. The Valor may see initial advantage in the shield drain game because the Harrower simply won’t be able to dodge, the sheer volume of fire will give the Harrower the option to fire in a wide spread to ensure some bolts hit their mark. The biggest issue is that the Valor’s evasive maneuvers will slow its rate of progression relative to the Harrower that will likely fly in a straighter line, allowing it to close the distance. The inefficient weapons placement of the Valor means that at any given time, the return fire that the Harrower must absorb is minimized. This matchup mostly ends up being dependent on the skill of the Harrower gunnery to hit and corral the Valor vs the helmsmanship of the Valor at dodging the incoming bolts.
      Mid-Range: The Valor picks between closing the distance, in which case it’s poor armor profile and ineffective weapon placement ensures it loses the shield match against the Harrower’s blistering frontal firepower before having the engines quickly shot out from under it… or try to open the distance… essentially the long range scenario except they don’t have the room necessary to dodge.
      Obstacle involved: This is the scenario the Valor needs to catch a Harrower in or draw them into. A debris field offers the Valor many opportunities for it to leverage its advantages in agility and starfighter compliment against the Harrower’s defensive and armament advantages by using the debris or asteroids to block fire and obscure observation of their maneuvers, as well as hoping the lacking agility of the Harrower results in greater damage from the environment. This would actually explain why many of the SWTOR space battles are in asteroid fields. Alternatively, a Valor could deploy in a way that puts an entire planet between itself and the nearest Harrower.

      There’s a reason why the Valor ship design virtually fell off the face of the galaxy, while the Harrower gave birth to one of the most successful capital ship designs in the verse.

  • @ryanyamada2645
    @ryanyamada2645 3 года назад +7

    Something I do not think was even taken into consideration was “Didn’t the Harrower have a massive array of anti starfighter / bomber guns”. Like matching that of the Dreadnaught class heavy cruiser, that most republic pilots feared as an anti spacecraft gun ship platform. I really do not think that even with the harrowers entire air wing crippled, that the bombers or their bombs would have an easy time of just landing their ordinance. They or their missiles, torpedos, bombs, would get cut to shreds trying to close in on the Harrower. The Sith empire was so feared because their ships pretty well stomped anything in era into the ground and they could blanket the battlefield in said ships. I am far from a lore expert, but what vague things I remembered were that it would generally take 2-3 ships like the Valor to even stand a chance. Even then 1-2 of the Valor classes would pay the price for the win.

      Meaning - if the Harrower is maneuvering it can have shileds and defend itself by quads... when it reaches right orientation it stops powering engines, rellying on innertia and pound target with tubrolasers...

I agree that the Valor is less armored than the Harrower but it's speed and fighter superiority would compensate for that. I would say that they are more-or-less equal

    If you were to update the technology on the Harrower to Galactic Empire era but keep the overall design, that ship would be a fucking beast.

  • @martinsleight9652
    @martinsleight9652 6 лет назад +11

    Very few ships can fire all guns at once, and I imagine the Harrower is one of those ships, or I doubt the Republic would've won any battle. It's been stated before that the Valor is more than a match for a Harrower so read into that what you will. Perhaps it's defensive abilities make up for lack of optimised gun placement.

  • @Bloo_DMT
    @Bloo_DMT 7 лет назад +1

    I would agree the republic relied upon the Thranta-class. and star fighters to engage capital ships like the Harrower. While the Valor-class cruiser. was heavily armed and armored it was in essence a fighter carrier/flagship it was no match for a proper dreadnought class vessel as it relied on speed more than fire power or armor for its protection and offensive capabilities.

      Katana Dreadnoughts only difference from normal is a lower crew need.

    • @HrothgarHeavenlight
      @HrothgarHeavenlight 7 лет назад

      Not really. Statistics for Dreadnought are for ships which were modified after funding Imperium. Partially that's why this ship have this big heavy turbolasers (from modification) , and low power old turbolasers from before modification. It is possible they have more hangar bays as slave-rigs gave much free space, 18k crew need much more supplies than 2,2k . For weapons, at best these are mostly medium turbolasers . similar to power of ISD main weapon, but it's optimistic assume. Old Republic Dreadnought carry 20 quad lasers, 10 turbolasers, 10 laser cannons and some ion cannons, compared to 10 heavy turbolasers and 20 quad turbolasers. One advantage of Katana fleet was ground troops, they were equipped with advanced walkers for this era, ATPT was decent walker , similar to ATST but smaller.

      HrothgarHeavenlight Garm Bel Iblis's dreadnaughts ,which were from the katana fleet,were equipped with ion cannons in thrawn trilogy,and those were not listed in the weapons roster. So katana dreadnaughts were equipped with some additional weaponry

    • @HrothgarHeavenlight
      @HrothgarHeavenlight 7 лет назад

      We dont know if it was a all Katana Dreadnought feature or Garm Bel Iblis own modification, it is even stated in that way on Wookiepedia.
      As Garm had quite strong force it can be possible he equipped (or replace some turbolasers ) hes ship with some ion cannons.

    One on one the Harrower has the advantage but rarely do lone ships meet lone ships. As a Fleet the Valour has the advantage since its broadsides allow it to target multiple targets simultaneously. Whereas the Harrower is a lone brawler the Valour can work in formations to concentrate on a wider selection of targets. Plus the more Valours there are the greater their fighter advantage becomes. In groups of 3 or more I’d give it to the Valour.

    if the valor class cruiser is faster it can stay out of cannon range and attack with the more numerous star fighters and bombers and when needed (or if most of the Harrower class dreadnought cannons are disable) the valor can com in and turn use broad side to attack then enemy.
    this is how i see it because from the looks of it the harrower is made go for ship to ship combat

    The main difference in war time tactics in SW mirrors WW2 in the pacific. Many commanders thought big battleships were the way to go whereas fewer commanders started realising air superiority was the way to go. As WW2 went on it became clear fighter superiority is the way to go, basically whoever had the most aircraft carriers and aircraft won. To me it seems like the Republic quite rightly go with air/space superiority and the Empire are stuck in the older way of thinking of Battleship superiority. Basically the Empire are way behind in tactics
    By this reasoning your taking the Valor out of its element and intended use. A Valor is never going to close to direct combat range. Its going to stay way back and operate as a fighter launcher like its designed to, utilizing its own weaponry as point defense of any enemy star fighters

    Inclined to agree with this assessment. Even though the Valor does carry more fighters and bombers, it only carries 15 fighters and 8 bombers more than the Harrower, which is not enough of an advantage. The only thing not covered that may provide some room for argument was in the weapons area, both ships carried missile/torpedo tubes but the Valor has access to Ion torpedoes which may help tip things (or may not). So far as I can find, the Harrower class only has access to normal Proton and Concussion systems, which are still good but are not designed to bring down shields the same way as Ion torpedoes. Also both ships have access to Ion cannons, though I cannot find any info about numbers.

  • @bostontracy5151

    I admit, the Harrower is MADE for combat, whereas the Valor seems to have been designed to be part of a fleet. However, lets not forget how time after time capital ships are severely crippled and often straight up destroyed by several snub fighters; when your fighters have numerical superiority and they're built MUCH better (better weapons, better shields, better hulls, etc.) so they also have overall air superiority, as well as a light capital ship supporting them, I would give this one to the lighter Valor Class Cruiser due to the sheer numbers of strong fighters it carries, as well as the fact that it's designed to be a light carrier (hanger bays on each side and large amount of fighters/bombers). We've seen x-wings destroy an entire star destroyer, I confidently think an overwhelming number of x-wing predecessors and bomber variants could tip the battle vs. a star destroyer predecessor with fewer fighters in the favor of the Valor.

      Ok.
      The name of this pilot in canon is Evaan Verlaine. She was a Alderaanian fighter pilot. During her childhood she was mentored by the mother of Leia Organa ( Breha Organa), wich later led her to folowig her planet's leaders into rebelion. Her first mission was in fact the battle of Scarif in wich she flew as Gold Three.
      After the battle Alderaan was destroyed. She personaly took the battle of Yavin becouse the Death Star destroyed her homeworld. After the battle she joined Princess Leia in her quest of gathering surviving remeining alderaanians. After the mission princess Leia passed her title of princess to Evaan.
      I hope I helped:)

    If the fight started at long or extreme ranges the Valor could play keep away until its fighters do their business but that's not the premise of these VS. videos. So I think you are 100% correct and the Harrower stomps the Valor into the floor.

    By the time the two ships meet thhe Valor would launch its fighters long before being within attack range of the Harrower. And fighters can make a huge difference between space battling vessels.

    i'd have to disagree with your conclusion here, the valor would probably use is superior speed to keep out of reach of the harrower until it's bombers had crippled it, then move in for the kill. the only way the harrower really stands a chance is if the valor is forced to stand and fight (eg. defending an immobile target such as a planet or space station)
