69 and still listening it dos'nt get much better than this the late 60s early 70 was the best time for music if your still listenin good for you your still breathing
For me, the "magic" of the era began with the awakening that took place ca. 1965 with groups like Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, [so many more], accelerated and more "electric" as the 60's closed. The greatness faded by the mid '80's and was damn near gone by the 21st Century. What can we say? We lived through one of a precious few "Enlightenments" that have visited our race. This composition, almost classical, is a good example of those times and the talent that inhabited it.
66 on March 13th, put the cd in my 500 watt system w/ tower speakers lay back in my leather Big Man Lazy Boy, fire up a fat one. And enjoy one of the greatest songs ever in my 16'x24' den. Man you can't go wrong w/ that.....Enjoy All
66 last Nov. Why to much drugs and alcohol the first time I heard this version but I stood up and took notice. The original is way to short and the the live Japan version was long enough to almost become out of hand. BTW, I couldn't listen to the whole 32 minute version the first time that I listened to it, to much party materials then to. The "electric" part got me. I don't have the wattage that you have but I can put the headphones on, turn the volume to 100 and tear the knob off, drive thru the waves and remember when. Have a good day
My cousin, Sheldon Rosen (RIP), was the equipment manager for Mountain. Previously, he managed Bartholomew +3 in Montreal and then joined Mountain alongside his friend Corky. Great memories.

My formative music years were right smack dab in the middle of all of this. So much great stuff, so little money to acquire, but plenty of friends to borrow from!
I would slide your years a couple of years earlier, with ‘64-‘72 getting my vote for the span during which the best music was recorded. I feel especially strongly about the ‘64 end. Starting at ‘66 cuts off too many great artists and songs, stuff like The Kinks, The Animals just to name a few.
Seventy-five years old and I'm still digging this. Just wish I had a room with very large speakers that I could play very loudly and some good hash to smoke.
Yes indeedy. I might be 70 but I still know my good music and play it often . Crank it up in my apt. and let the youngins know what it sounds like. Fond memories of me and late husband seeing them in Portchester NY at the Capital Theater.
I have been listening to this song since I was a kid in the 70,s, and it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. One of my favourite songs ever.
Well put Ian. I'm with you word for word. I saw Mountain many times. Leslie West never played any song the same way ever. But Felix was the man. This was Mountain at their best.
In England we were blown away by an American band - Mountain in the early 70's, and we were not starved of talented musicians then, Clapton, Davies, Winwood etc. But for some reason that big guy with a big voice and a big talented band has always stayed in my mind. No replacement.
Age is just a number, inside we are the same as we always were. My introduction to Mountain was "Don't turn around" on an Island sampler vinyl album, bought the "Nantucket Sleighride" album the day after. I will be 80 in June and music is my life, cheers.
Okay, I have just finished listening to this 3 times in a row. This has to be the greatest example of bass playing ever recorded. I have been a bass player for 52 years and I say that Felix was an absolute monster on bass.
I agree with you bigly, the greatest example of bass playing ever recorded. David Freiberg's bass solo in QMS's Who Do You Love is right up there with it. But what do I know, I've only been a bass player for 45 years. I used to channel Felix's fuzz bass style in a certain pissant metal band I was in during the 80's, because I saw Mountain from the front row in St. Louis in the mid 70's. I just had to do fuzz bass after seeing him. I wore out a vinyl copy of this album, still have the cover as a souvenir of those days.
@@JoeSchmenke Nice you did mention David Freiberg... and his fantastic solo on the Happy trails album... David is maybe the most underrated bass player in rock and roll ...

Incredible Chemistry Between Felix,Leslie,Corky and Steve. They were Mountain... You can feel it right down in your Soul.. One of the Greatest Bands of our Time in History!!
They are comparing life to a Nantucket Sleighride. I think... For whoever don't know, a Nantucket Sleighride is a whale of a ride. The ships let boats down on the water when they saw whales. The guys in the boats harpooned whales and then went on a Nantucket Sleighride until the whale gave up. Yup, that's life. I'm pushing 70 and I lived through the best of times and music. Thanks Leslie and crew.
41 here. My dad and I would listen to this after a hard practice or training to decompress. Played d1 college baseball. I was immediately drawn to this because I felt it was their portrayal of captain ahab after the white whale in moby dick folklore.
I don't think they are saying life is like the Nantucket Sleigh Ride, maybe about lost and found love and someone named Robin Marie. Ask Gail Collins if she is still alive.
Saw them at the Fillmore East in April 1971. My ears were ringing for 24+ hrs. Was hoping someone would mention what a Nantucket Sleighride was. My ancestors were whalers, just a bit south of Nantucket, out of Sag Harbor, NY. On Main Street is the Whalers Museum. A true blast from out past. Rock On!
I had tickets to see Mountain at a shore venue in N.J. in the winter of 1972. We had a huge snowstorm that night so I was unable to make the drive down. I will always reget it.
mountain on 8-track cassette 1970 green Maverick and a road trip to Massachusetts never forget .Didn't we take it for granted that this was the way it was suppose to be for all of eternity.
Lucky enough to see them 4 times live. Watching them loving what they were doing and challenging each other ! Sad to say, does'nt happen any more.We were damn lucky ,all of us, to be able to hear this
The keyboardist. 70's rock. So many memories. Once bands transitioned and eliminated so much quality sound. I still love music in many eras. But to just eliminate was so sad. I think most people love Mountains for being who they truly were.
I saw Mountain for the first time in 1970. I took this girl who i was dating, and later married. The place was filled with smoke (the good kind) she asked me what that smell was. I told her to just breath in deep. Love Mountain and always will.
Both my son and myself think this is the greatest rock and roll song every, Just listen to that bass blends in so well with West on guitar. its amazing and drums and keyboards. Saw them live back in 1970
I played this song religiously when I was a young teen not having a good time in life. It helped me feel like I wasn't alone. This is one band I really wish I had seen before it was too late.
Oh yeah! This old lady loves the way that bass player just took over and carried it all! Old friend was a studio musician, sitting in in a lot of recordings when whatever band needed an extra kick-ass guitar. He said that he loved playing with Mountain and hanging with them when the work was done! To this day, I don't know why some band didn't snatch him up. 50 years later, he's still rocking!
Sad that great bands like this burned so bright, they didn't last too long. There's a long list of truly magnificent bands that made great music and poof something happened and they were gone. My ears were so happy back then. Thx so for this post.
This is my favorite version of this beautiful song. I saw them in 1974 during their brief reunion tour as a trio. As much as I enjoyed them, what I missed was Steve Knight’s keyboards. They add a depth, color and counterpoint which made their sound unique, as is witnessed throughout this masterpiece.
Felix wanted Steve in the band, even though Leslie really didn't want him. They didn't get along. But Felix didn't want to be another Cream, so he added the keyboards of Steve. I like the counter point they add.
I also saw them as a trio in 1974 as a sophomore in High school. What a great show, they were a powerhouse but with beautiful melody. I’ve seen hundreds of live shows and Felix was one of the best bass players I ever saw.
" R & R Hall of fame "...is an artificial construct created by a small group of masons . mostly from England and the only value they have is what your energy gives it . Mountains talent is self evident and doesnt need any validation or approval from the MSM . Besides I DONT UNDERRATE THEM ....They be A list rockers for eternity
Listened to this on vinyl when I was in college, some 40+ years ago. It still pops into my head every now and then. Felix was on fire the night they recorded this, and Leslie was in the same zone.
I was a high school teenager when I first heard this song. I remember being blown away by the total majesty of this track. Even when I listen to this these days, the music will reverberate in my mind for a few days. My favorite time to play this is when I'm out on a long-distance motorcycle ride... I can almost feel the waves.
The great, the underrated and the tragic Mountain. with drugs, Felix going deaf and personal differences they never reached their full potential. As it is, this live track proves they could stand comparison with the very best of their rival heavy bands, eg Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. Felix's bass playing is awesome here - and Leslie hits a truly brilliant riff around 6.30. A truly epic live performance of a bona fide rock classic! Today's stuff seems so tame...
Leslie screaming! Was listening to my sister's Nantucket Sleigh Ride LP when I was a kid and loved it..... now 50+ years later getting back into them hard..... !
Mountain was truly an underrated band. This song has always been my favorite. I can tell because whenever it comes on the radio I stop what I'm doing to listen. I bought this album when it was released, later the 8 track, then a cassette, then a CD, now this. Although the sound quality might not be as good, its very interesting hearing the different jams from over the years.
In my formidable years I was 18 when I first heard this and listening to it today now at 65 brings back so many memories of a time I wish I could live again and do nothing different. Wherever my good friend Chuck may be today, the person I did acid with listening to this back in '72, I hope your well and share the same memories of that time! Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin was the place.
I saw this wonderful band in London in around 1971, supporting Faces and Pink Floyd. To this day they are still probably my favourite hard rock band, and this beautiful song is an anthem, no less. Thank you Leslie, thank you Felix, thank you Corky, thank you Steve, you made this guy's day back then ... a day that still continues with this song!
Great Trip You Had thanks for sharing I can only wish I seen them in concert, I thought I did at Concert #10 Pocono Mountain’s July 8,9,1972 but I might be wrong !
I first heard this track as the theme to a british tv show called 'Weekend world' I think it was, I was still at school in the 70's and waited for Sunday lunchtime TV to show the program purely for the bridge part of the chorus. with NO INTERNET tracking the music down was a struggle with only 'Theme music by Mountain' to go by, eventually things fell into place and with the music press and "older guys who knew" I managed to buy 'The best of Mountain' and now, 63 years old I've just found it again.
This was the era where music made sense! I seen Mr. West many times when he was still alive. Never disappointed! If there is a rock and roll heaven it must total ass kicking! So many music possibilities!
Just incredible. First heard this in the late 70's as a boy. Still damn well loving it now. I want an EB-1 Bass to play like Felix god bless him. Keep on rockin!!!
This song is perfect in every way. I'm 28 and it's a miracle that I found Mountain. So many copies of that cool cover lying around in record stores and I finally had to buy one, and so this was the first version of Nantucket Sleighride I ever heard...hope one day I can have even a fraction of the musicality that Felix Pappalardi does. The lyrics really transport you to another world. Historical references as others say, but also both somber and hopeful tones as the vocal parts come and go like West's guitar does. This whole song just does so much. It's a trip.
Had to listen.... again to one of my all time favorite live recordings after reading about Leslie’s demise. Although I never saw him live He brought a great deal of highs and joy to many with his melodic playing. RIP Leslie ... you won’t be forgotten
4 guys. Live, with no computers or overdubs. Unique band and under-rated. They didn't play Woodstock because they were slackers. Felix Pappalardi was a genius producer and musician. I saw them do the opening tour for this album and got to meet Leslie West backstage when I was a kid due to family in music biz. Nice guy, monster of a man, and Monster guitarist. Nobody played like him. Long Live Mountain.
Totally agree!...The only thing that I can really recall of the 70's is the music collection I had, lol!...Still have most of it too, and never grew out of it!
Agreed. Check out the live NS on the Twin Peaks album 31mins! It kicks ass too. also check out Mountain Capital Theater Passaic,New Jersey bootleg series vol #6 there is a NS on there for about 11 min.
This is my second comment on this great piece of rock guitar accompanied by bass, drums and keyboard. Notice how the bassist, Felix Pappalardi, sustains the tune on a long stretch of the work, then the lead guitarist, Leslie West, comes in and out to shadow and accompany him. The full band begins to play together when Steve Knight, the keyboard artist holds forth--and Leslie West begins a mounting crescendo. Meanwhile Corky Laing on the drums sets the pace--whether faster or more slowly, and toward the end he hits some special rhythm work--then the Vocalist's poetry ends it.
Felix p.has been my favorite bass player, singer song writer for about 50 years. In this recording his bass sounds so incredibly huge resonate and melodious also his vocals are clear distinctively strong it is so tragic what happened to him one of the most bizarre stories in the history of rock and roll
been in love w this track since i first heard it 20 somethin years ago. the bass is the main reason. scanning thru comments tonite to see if anyone knows what gear he was using for this show? any thoughts? possibly greatest electric bass tone ever
First time hearing this. Wow I’m totally blown away. There’s certain groups that can only ever be done once. Mountain 🏔 is definitely one of those bands. I don’t want to say ahead of their time these guys were perfect for the time in which they were. I remember watching a guitar world disc on my computer and it showed Leslie west busting out his les Paul junior totally amazing. Good music never ages it’s like a fine wine it just gets better
Mountain and other successful bands of that era form the Soundtrack of my life. I feel privileged to have been alive when such amazing musicians walked amongst us.
I'm still listening to this, remembering when I was care free, when life was young. Nothing could hurt you......I'm still that till this day. Good friend's good times with the music we played. This is one of those song's
Listen to the lyrics, don’t just “hear” them. Historical references abound. The lyrics are deep and well thought out. This is a true story of history, find it, and absorb it on your own. The lyrics of this song remind me of a group of a totally different genre, Genesis, before Gabriel and ultimately Hackett left. The ability to write songs with connections to history with both acute and obtuse references is what makes these sort of songs both educational and sonic gems at the same time. Mountain could hard rock but could switch it up easily to softer tunes. Ironically, I pulled out my old Mountain albums just a few days ago to listen after a long absence only to find out now that Leslie West had just died at 75 of a heart attack. Strange indeed.
Genesis, long time since I heard that name. You reminded me of of The Moody Blues for some reason. Maybe because I listened to both around the same time. Anyway, cheers!
This is sort of true in terms of what is called a Nantucket Sleigh Ride actually is re: dragging a whale that's been harpooned. And referring Moby Dick, but some of the lyrics are odd. Pappalardo was a great musician.
I remember in the mid 70's going to a friends house and going through his older brothers record collection and finding early Alice Cooper , Sabbath , Zappa and Mountain . Loved em all and still do
When I was a junior high school student forty six years ago,I listened to this music so many times. So Naturally I drew a picture inspired by this music. After a while I could win the first prize by the picture at an exhibition . It`s a good memory.
Good Man, hallelujah to yuh. I'd love to see it. I imagine an anguished, injured, dying whale trying his damnedest to live as he pulls these other mammals out to sea only to die a horrible death. But this particular song was about no whales but trouble on the sea and cannibalism of a fellow sailor and friend..
For a heavy rock band that could really get in your face, they played some beautiful compositions, like this and Theme For An Imaginary Western. If a band feels the need to show some "sensitivity", these are far better musically and lyrically, than the usual wimpy love ballads a lot of bands in that era and later, put out.
Geez-this is my favorite of all rock extended pieces mainly because ,other than Dead pieces, this is led by the bass player(the late great Felix) and almost sounds like a composition(and Steve is INVALUABLE to this).
This is one of the better versions of Nantucket. Thanks for uploading it. I heard this version about 1974 when these guys played at my college. Pappalardi was spectacular! My ears were ringing for a week. In fact, they're still ringing 50 yrs later.
Hot damn. The Holy Grail. Last time I saw Mountain as a four piece in 1971 they did the extended version of NS. Every band member showcased their talent for 20 minutes. I dropped acid and was 12 rows from the stage. I just recall Corky Laing being a blur.
This was recorded at the rainbow in London and I was there stoned it was a great night and a bloody loud night shortly after this concert they split didn’t finish the tour such a shame one of best rock bands ever
Oh,YES,MOUTAIN SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK HALL OF FAME, L.WEST,F.PAP.CORKY,STEVE, ONE OF THE BEST ROCK BANDS EVER,THAT BASS ,GUITAR PLAYING,THAT ORGAN,DRUMS, THEY MADE MUSIC SMART, HISTORIC MUSICIANSHIP.😎🎸🔊🎶☮️ BOB
In the spring of 1970 I was given the opportunity of doing lights & sound for Mountain at Ramapo High School in Rockland County, N.Y. Felix Papalardi was one of the most laid back & brilliant individuals that I ever had the privlage to work with...very open about how he produced Cream's WHEELS OF FIRE, two years previously...Leslie West was a panic...Mr. MOUNTAIN collected & played Les Paul Jr.'s exclusively....baby guitars in his hands, but man...scream, you ole steel strapped piece of mahogany....They were an excellent band to work with & thoroughly enjoy...

Haven't heard this for fifty years. What wonderful memories thanks guys❤️
On every Mountian LP and all the repro CDs it says "THIS ALBUM IS MADE TO BE PLAYED LOUD!"
Turn it UP!!!!
RIP Leslie and Felix.
( soft Gentle Smile's)
Do not forget Steve Knight. The beautiful keyboard and second guitar.
Sad that great bands like this burned so bright, they didn't last too long. There's a long list of truly magnificent bands that made great music and poof something happened and they were gone. My ears were so happy back then. Thx so for this post.
One of the greatest tunes ever, and the album kicks butt too.!!! Pure talent Leslie,Felix, and Corky.!!!
One afternoon my Guitar teacher put on this album and my life was forever changed. What great days those were then !
Your teacher knew exactly what he was doing. Fantastic.
I've listened to this version of the song since 1973, which is almost 50 years, and it still moves me ...
Yes, it's a story about cannibalism on a whaling ship, which was wrecked in 1880 something. They ate the youngest mate, just to stay alive.
Absolutely my favorite version...an anthem to my youth!!!!
Thanks for the amazing ride Leslie West!
Mountain has to go into THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME . THEY ARE SO UNDER RATED .
That tone and vibrato,..RIP Leslie West,...
I agree his tone and vibrato are legendary and will always be remembered. RIP Leslie West
anyone who has tried to play guitar understands how difficult getting vibrato on the bend up without the whammy
RIP Felix
@@kevinblake7078 5 years and still aint got it
This never gets old. Brings me back to a better time every time I hear it. A true masterpiece.
Formidable? I think you meant FORMATIVE.
Incredible clarity for a live recording.......... This is something very special.
💜 So ein schoenes Lied.
Wenn ich träume, träume ich dieses Lied. 💜 Michael.
65 years old and still listening. Great music!!!
Charlie
Crystal Palace bowl, I was there, great gig!
I was at that show too - still one of the best concerts I've ever been to although the white lightning might have had something to do with that!
Great Trip You Had thanks for sharing I can only wish I seen them in concert, I thought I did at Concert #10 Pocono Mountain’s July 8,9,1972 but I might be wrong !
I first heard this track as the theme to a british tv show called 'Weekend world' I think it was, I was still at school in the 70's and waited for Sunday lunchtime TV to show the program purely for the bridge part of the chorus. with NO INTERNET tracking the music down was a struggle with only 'Theme music by Mountain' to go by,
eventually things fell into place and with the music press and "older guys who knew" I managed to buy 'The best of Mountain' and now, 63 years old I've just found it again.
This was the era where music made sense! I seen Mr. West many times when he was still alive. Never disappointed! If there is a rock and roll heaven it must total ass kicking! So many music possibilities!
This song reminds me of the most beautiful time of my life, and is awesome. Cant go wrong with this one.
Never gets old. Gives me chills!!
RIPPING
It’s crazy how good he was❤️RIP Leslie West🙏🏻
Love the chimes towards the end. The whole extended play makes you feel you're on the ship sailing on the ocean.
Had to listen.... again to one of my all time favorite live recordings after reading about Leslie’s demise.
Although I never saw him live He brought a great deal of highs and joy to many with his melodic playing.
RIP Leslie ... you won’t be forgotten
what was played between minute 9:00 and 15:00 is something of the most atmospheric and unique of rock music
Brings me back so many years, but the strength and the freshness are still there!
Best music, best group, nothing like or ever will be like it
Exactly
Uh, they did play Woodstock.
Yes. They did.
Thx.
They did play Woodstock.. They set was cut from the movie. Johnny Winters was cut too.
Thank you.
The Best Ever Version of this song...indisputably
You know your music.
Classic Bob No Felix
Robert Lane what? explain
Nice analysis 👍✌️💨
Hell yea.. its a complete “team effort”... attention to detail..
very nice observation,well thought out.
This has been my favorite rock song since I first heard it. I'm 61. Still listening .
Brings me back to early television with Brian Walden on a Sunday. Tremendous track. Thunderous stuff.
It was called Weekend World ♥️
One of the few groups that I have all of their albums on vinyl. Very underrated band.
Hadn’t heard this in years, so good I had to play it again, couldn’t believe my ears
This Album is the greatest, listening to it for 50 odd years. Still have the lp
I turned this song on a few years ago, and it hasn’t ever stopped
So frigging good! Went to a Mountain concert years ago, amazing! This is real music.❤❤❤
Thanks. RIP Leslie West. Great loss of a true rock legend with a signature sound. I just heard about it, wrote some friends and included this YT link.
Genesis, long time since I heard that name. You reminded me of of The Moody Blues for some reason. Maybe because I listened to both around the same time. Anyway, cheers!
@@rhmayer1 My favorite recording of this song by him. Cheers

This is sort of true in terms of what is called a Nantucket Sleigh Ride actually is re: dragging a whale that's been harpooned. And referring Moby Dick, but some of the lyrics are odd. Pappalardo was a great musician.
What a great tune during a great time for music... 8 tracks and all Cruising in my 69 Firebird! My HS daze!
I would like to see it
Good Man, hallelujah to yuh.
If a band feels the need to show some "sensitivity", these are far better musically and lyrically, than the usual wimpy love ballads a lot of bands in that era and later, put out.
that was a cream composition. Jack Burse if IRC.
@gary bullis. He said "played".
And a few more, For Yasgur's farm, Travelling in the dark
Brings back memories of the 70's. My best friend couldn't play it enough.
I'm 75 and saw Mountain in Toronto at the Imperial theatre a million years ago,one of the best concert I've been to.
Mountain were an incredible band and this prove's it! God bless Leslie West.
One of my favorite bassist’s. Live For Ever ✌🏼
This is what Rock n Roll is all about a monument of talent no bullshit here
When I got home from Vietnam-the guys in the next room in our barracks played Mountain non stop all day everyday- this was by far my favorite song.
Best version of Nantucket Sleighride.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT OUTSTANDING MASTERPIECE!!!
Hot damn. The Holy Grail. Last time I saw Mountain as a four piece in 1971 they did the extended version of NS. Every band member showcased their talent for 20 minutes. I dropped acid and was 12 rows from the stage. I just recall Corky Laing being a blur.
How I miss WABX.
music hall or orpheum in boston>
This was recorded at the rainbow in London and I was there stoned it was a great night and a bloody loud night shortly after this concert they split didn’t finish the tour such a shame one of best rock bands ever
...are you still there??
Great memories WOW
One of the most under-rated band I have ever listened and enjoyed - and I worked in the music industry for 35 years....
Im 66 and been playing guitar 50 plus years.Leslie West was one my big influences.Still is.❤
In the spring of 1970 I was given the opportunity of doing lights & sound for Mountain at Ramapo High School in Rockland County, N.Y.
Couldn't agree more. Felix was super cool …. and Leslie made me such a fan of the LP Jrs with the black standard pickups.
Wow ! I remember that concert at RCC .
what a tragedy the way he died .. one of my favorite players ...
