Duane Allman was a badass! One of the greatest guitarists ever... And to think he played this brilliantly and magically on this live record, and on Derek and The Dominos, between the ages of 21-23 years old, is nothing shy of mind-blowing! I've heard some amazing guitarists in my time, such as Terry Kath, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton, Frank Zappa, etc. etc. etc., but Duane was absolutely up there, at the very top of the list, with the best of them! And he did something with that Les Paul that no one else could ever replicate or duplicate. Magic.
Yo, Deadhead, what about Jerry Garcia?? I know, I know - the Dead were a completely Other bucket of crustaceans. I’ve also always loved the minimalists: John Cale, Robbie Robertson. But yes, this may be the world’s greatest live album. Although Europe 72 by the Dead is up there too. And people listened to teensy weensy talents like Peter Frampton. IMHO.
Fillmore East live. Someone shouted out: Play all night and they sure did. Ive listened to this album 1000s of times. It doesn't get any better than this.
I think one of the main things that set Duane apart from all other guitar players, and this applies to slide guitar and regular guitar, was his crystal clear and perfect intonation. Not to mention his fabulous tone, with out the gimmicks, pedals, etc. that other players used. Then there is his dynamics, and touch.... unparalleled in my opinion. I play a little, and every time I listen to this, since it came out eons ago, I am blown away. Truly, a once in a lifetime genius!
@@ricknelms "Nope" what? I state the four greatest live albums and you belch out "nope?" Oh, I get it, you just popped off without understanding. No wonder the world despises Americans. We don't even bother to make sure we are understood any more.
Iv'e seen Jimi,The Doors,Janis,Grateful Dead,The Who,And of course Stevie Ray six times.Nobody rocked and jammed as the Brothers did when Duane was alive
Agreed....I saw the Brothers a dozen times with Duane and Barry and the whole band.....Never have I felt nor heard anything like it since. Shared a stage with them in 1971(May 1st) in North Carolina when I was playing with Chuck Berry.
I cant agree with you anymore than I do. Duane was a GOD that didn't finish . Even though he left here just starting out, they are all listening to that magnificent slide in the sky. Play it SKY DOG!!!
My first concert at 14 years old in 1973 at Philly Spectrum. Started with the best live group ever. Like smoking a Cuban as your first cigar, it aint gonna get better!
I certainly agree with that. In fact, I have read that the Dead and Allman Brothers met Miles Davis at the Fillmore. He influenced both Duane and Jerry , as well as Phil Lesh and Barry Oakley. They would jam and get high backstage .. Thanks to Bill Graham.. lots of cross-pollination went on. It was Bill's goal to expose guys playing Blues-Rock to the likes of Muddy Waters, Miles Davis, BB King and many many others. They got to see and hear the roots of their own music.
The fun starts at about the 7 minute mark and just builds up to one of the great guitar performances ever recorded. Love the solitary guitar working w/ the 2 drums.
karmapeach ... I agree karmapeach.... Duane Allman is one of the top 5 guitarists of the past 50 years. Rory Gallagher is the only one who could match him playing electric, acoustic AND slide guitar. Gallagher also wrote, sang, & produced the bulk of his output. Not to mention he played a great harmonica, sax, mandolin and sitar. I CAN'T THINK OF ANOTHER TOP GUITARIST WHO COULD DO ALL THAT !!
I am American(,not that it means much but just for the record,) but Rory Gallagher is right up there with every one with his own uniqueness and style.....
God came down this night and spoke through every player in the ABB gifting the world with the Fillmore East album. There are few examples of this phenomenon but this album speaks to and from the human soul more than any other.
What a great jam session, just throwing out one idea after another. Hats off to Howard and Gregory Allman, and Forrest Betts. You were some of THE best ever.
Fuckin A !!! That Coricidan Bottle of Duane's sure as hell got a good workout this night ! Original Allman Brothers Band circa 1969-1971 and Hendrix best bands I ever saw Live.
when you listen to this you are making a commitment, to donate 1/3 of an hour of your life to this song, Ive donated many , many hrs over the yrs, listening to it, .....
Perhaps the best cut, from perhaps the best live album ever recorded. The soloing moves beyond brilliance, and I still get chills hearing Gregg's organ build into the finale, just before "Joy to the World". Will never tire of listening to this masterpiece. God bless all the Brothers!
Those WERE the days my friend!!! The 70s, were bands full of raw talent. So down to earth. Not trying to outdo anyone else, just honor and respect for each other, pure, plain, and simple. That's the way I see it, nothing fake and no lipsincing. I'm watching The Allman Brothers at Filmore East, and the whole band is as real as it gets. No question about it.
Walked in the guitar store, ask the clerk for a glass slide. He looked at me like I was asking for a space ship. Says " no one plays the slide anymore. And I told him, thats why music sucks now ".
Malcolm Carriere Yup, and now MR Betts (Jaime too) are the only ones left. No disrespect to Derek Trucks and Warren. Just not part of this original grrrrreat stuff!!
Playing this song in the park on a speaker. It wasn't so loud, but a group of toddlers that were playing came by and started dancing to the music. There is hope yet folks.
Just amazing! I have always loved this album and especially this song. Based on the old question "If you were stranded on an island and only had one album to choose to listen to, which would it be?" I've always told people I would choose live at the Fillmore East. Never, ever get tired of listening to it. Just love it!
Listen to Bill Graham's intro on the 1971 Fillmore Concerts . . . he says it right - the Brothers were the best he ever heard! Remember, he heard every rock band there was in those heady days at both Fillmore venues and he offered the ABB the opportunity to close Fillmore East! For those who know, The ABB at Fillmore East was a classic that will stand the test of time of any live performance! And for those who understand Brother Duane, the ABB "layed it down" with power and passion not many can begin to emulate or match. In 1971 those boys from Macon Ga. blew you away . . . as they still do now. Listen sometime to "Dimples" from the Ludlow Garage gig. It's the only song Duane sang. "Time goes by like fallin rain and much faster things" but the music of the ABB goes on forever. Listen and experience a soul serenade.
Easily one of the most moving musical pieces I've ever heard. Duane does to the Guitar what no one else can. You know that when he's whippin' it, you're hearing his story.
What an amazing time. When the best rock and roll came from about a five or six year spread- This double set, Blind Faith, Derick & The Dominos, The Band, Youngbloods,Ten Years After, Canned Heat,Clapton, Dr. John, Neil Young, on and on ....... all in a few brief years. What a great time to experience (Hendrix) and be old enough to know what you were hearing was truly history in the making. !!!!!! The Filmore east and west gave Graham something he could not buy or sell.
I never had the chance to go to the Filmore that's some thing I'll always regret but feel lucky to lived through an amazing period of some of the best music ever put out. I was lucky enough to get to go to the Main Point outside Philly for the beginning of the Springsteen Phenomenon. What a Blast it was in those days!
***** Yes it was .... was is the operative word .. what a shame that so much has diminished (or at least so much has gone south) God help us.....!!!! Can anyone answer just what the hell is going on - where is love for one another .. where is truth?
I saw this concert, way back when. I was 13, and to this day, I believe this is still one of the best albums of all time. So happy I was there. These guys were so gorgeous and talented.
It's amazing that all of the best music was made 40 & 50 yrs ago. And it still stands the test of time. My favorite song ever is Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman on 'Loan Me a Dime'. Duane's guitar playing in that song alone inspired me to buy my own electric guitar and learn to play. I also share middle names with Howard Duane Allman. Yea, my daddy is the biggest ABB fan on this planet. Slightly bigger than me lol. I grew up in the 80s listening to vinyls of the Brothers, Jethro Tull, Jeff Beck, etc...but mostly ABB. So they were a huge influence on me. TBH, growing up, I hated my middle name. I didn't understand how important Duane is to Southern Rock & rock music in general. I knew he was a great guitarist but I didn't get it. Well I finally get it now, at 38 years old, and I couldn't be prouder to share middle names with the greatest guitar player to ever live. ❤️ YOU, SKYDOG! Oh yea, I just bought my first glass slide yesterday, a Dunlop Derek Trucks Signature medicine bottle. Yes, I'm learning that, too. 😁🤘🎸❤️
Loved this from day one ...Duane just was the best guitarist ... Duane Allman was the best guitar player I ever heard who didn’t read a note Gregg Allman
The seamless work of two great drummers gives the band a wholly unique sound. They provide a superb rhythmic underpinning to all the great music the rest of the band laid over top.
You are so right. I remember, as a non-musician, trying to figure out what made the ABB sound so unique, and of course is was the twin drummers. I so miss going to their concerts.
Butch I think knew by now Gregg was dying. His whole life was wrapped up in this band. I read he sat in the dark and played AAB for hours. He had pride n money troubles. He should have reached out for help from friends and therapists. Pride does come before a fall. God Bless Butch. The pain got to be too much. Man, you should have reached out for help. Dark times always pass if you hang on!

IMHO.
Still have the original vinyl - best live album ever.
Fillmore East live. Someone shouted out: Play all night and they sure did. Ive listened to this album 1000s of times. It doesn't get any better than this.
And we know someone shouted "Whipping Post" 😎
Incredible how they could transform any 3-minute song into a great jam session.
I liked them in high school, but now in my 60's I have a whole new respect for their amazing body of work. Doesn't this song just blow you away?
ummm....yea it. does!...
Oh yea and then some
I think one of the main things that set Duane apart from all other guitar players, and this applies to slide guitar and regular guitar, was his crystal clear and perfect intonation.
I totally agree
Skydog, Greeny, Hendrix, Clapton, Winter, George, Beck, on and on and on
Been listening to this album since it came out in '71. Never gets old.
I would add Duane's phrasing too.
the finest live rock performance ever committed to vinyl.......14:08,...that run is just fricken killer....
"Live At Leeds" - The Who
"Get Yer Ya-Yas Out" - The Rolling Stones
"The Mothers of Invention LIve At the Fillmore East"
And this double album.
That shuffle is deadly and the fills are over the top great. 🤘🤘❤️

"Nope" what? I state the four greatest live albums and you belch out "nope?" Oh, I get it, you just popped off without understanding. No wonder the world despises Americans. We don't even bother to make sure we are understood any more.
7 to 15 and in particular ,12:46 to 14:08.
So almost 50 years later this album is still a favorite and one to pull out and blow my friends away
Iv'e seen Jimi,The Doors,Janis,Grateful Dead,The Who,And of course Stevie Ray six times.Nobody rocked and jammed as the Brothers did when Duane was alive
Best jam band ever if not the first?
Agreed....I saw the Brothers a dozen times with Duane and Barry and the whole band.....Never have I felt nor heard anything like it since. Shared a stage with them in 1971(May 1st) in North Carolina when I was playing with Chuck Berry.
@@scottmoyer1357 I can't even imagine. You Boomers had the best music. By far
@@scottmoyer1357 You mean BERRY, as in Oakley, bassist supreme n glue Duane n band needed to b THE best...
I cant agree with you anymore than I do. Duane was a GOD that didn't finish . Even though he left here just starting out, they are all listening to that magnificent slide in the sky. Play it SKY DOG!!!
it was rated one if not the best live recording EVER in history so perfect every note and perfect sound. RIP DUANE eat a peach brother.
And Gregg :(

I grew up on Allman's and i'am proud of it!
hell yeah
My first concert at 14 years old in 1973 at Philly Spectrum. Started with the best live group ever. Like smoking a Cuban as your first cigar, it aint gonna get better!
You and me both brother.
We, the lucky ones....
He'll yes! My heros!
This song is like a religious experience. Imagine being in that audience in 71...
My Allman Brothers Band religious experience is "Mountain Jam." An anthem to the 1970s music scene and a lasting memorial to The ABB.
My friend Fred, was there. He said they stopped playing at 4AM
I was there 🙏. Lucky!
The potential was immeasurable
Only the Allman Brothers (when Duane was alive) & Miles Davis can play for 20 or more minutes and not bore the life of you.
I read that Duane claimed to listen to "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis for a about a year. Only album he listened to.
The Grateful Dead too
I was going to bring up In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida as another exception, but I checked and it was only 17:06 minutes long, so I agree with you. :)
ever hear of the grateful dead?
Thank you ABB for all the good times you gave us.
The fun starts at about the 7 minute mark and just builds up to one of the great guitar performances ever recorded. Love the solitary guitar working w/ the 2 drums.
Never, ever gets old. Been listening to the brothers for decades.
WHAT CAN I SAY GUYS? IM IN MY SEVENTIESAND STILL LISTEN TO THIS...
No one has and no one ever will come close to the amount of skill Duane had on the guitar
your so right, but may,be Rory Gallagher, though i am a little biased cos i am Irish, but wayne is probably the best ever.
karmapeach ...
JoJoJo Sky Dog!!!
+Stephen Rajczyk : Oh man, don't me going on Rory. What a prodigy he was! I thank God we had him, even if only for a short while.
SkyDog was an angel from Heaven.
Best live Album of all TIME!!🤙🏻
Man, it just just doesn't get much better than this.
I’m 64 , Nobody, nobody comes close to em Seen em all

The Joy to the World finale riff - Wow!
Damn you, The Allman Brothers Band, for setting such high standards that no other blues band can even come close to this kind of cooking
The Allman Brothers Band are STILL trying!
They weren't a blues band.
Bob are you serious. The Allman Brothers are the essence of a blues band. Blues is a feeling and the Allman Brothers got it.
And they had funk and soul too!
Bob huh? Are you serious? Try telling that to Dickey Betts, or Jaimoe and be prepared for a rumble!
The BEST live album ever made!
Anyone who says otherwise will get a fat lip at recess!
This double album was so great, 223 people turned their computer upside down and voted thumbs up twice!
anyone that would interrupt this midstream with an add...well y'all get it!
What a great jam session, just throwing out one idea after another. Hats off to Howard and Gregory Allman, and Forrest Betts. You were some of THE best ever.
Best jam of ALL TIME!!!
BEST LIVE EVER
I jammed with 30somethings several yrs ago. They said "Hey wait a minute--are you The Allman Bros.?" From WPB FLA! The People's music!!! Jim N
Fuckin A !!! That Coricidan Bottle of Duane's sure as hell got a good workout this night ! Original Allman Brothers Band circa 1969-1971 and Hendrix best bands I ever saw Live.
The late Great Skydog Allman showing us how it’s done.
I love it!!🍄🎸
when you listen to this you are making a commitment, to donate 1/3 of an hour of your life to this song, Ive donated many , many hrs over the yrs, listening to it, .....
Perhaps the best cut, from perhaps the best live album ever recorded. The soloing moves beyond brilliance, and I still get chills hearing Gregg's organ build into the finale, just before "Joy to the World". Will never tire of listening to this masterpiece. God bless all the Brothers!
Oh man, the parties we use to have listening to this.
Man am I jealous! You play this at a party these days people just stand around and wonder what the hell is playing!!!??!?!
ABSOLUTELY!!!!
Jack James is that a thing ?
Indeed!!!
Walked in the guitar store, ask the clerk for a glass slide. He looked at me like I was asking for a space ship. Says " no one plays the slide anymore. And I told him, thats why music sucks now ".
WTF?
That’s hilarious and very sad at the same time
THE BEST BAND EVER
Malcolm Carriere Yup, and now MR Betts (Jaime too) are the only ones left. No disrespect to Derek Trucks and Warren. Just not part of this original grrrrreat stuff!!
Thats a fact
Playing this song in the park on a speaker. It wasn't so loud, but a group of toddlers that were playing came by and started dancing to the music.
There is hope yet folks.
Just amazing! I have always loved this album and especially this song. Based on the old question "If you were stranded on an island and only had one album to choose to listen to, which would it be?" I've always told people I would choose live at the Fillmore East. Never, ever get tired of listening to it. Just love it!
Duane Allman once commented, "We have 2 little guitars (Duane & Dickey) and 1 big guitar (Berry). Now all we need is a bass player." LOL.
Berry was the needle, the others were the thread
So true!
Surrounded by great musicians,he chose.Duane Allman proved time and time again, why 5 decades after his passing. He has no peers.peace
The Bill Graham point says it all. He saw everyone. 👍
Thank You God for Duane Allman!!🎸☮️🍄
Yes it was -hard to describe -and maybe that isn't even possible- damn near spiritual ... amazing !!!!
***** Yes it was .... was is the operative word .. what a shame that so much has diminished (or at least so much has gone south) God help us.....!!!! Can anyone answer just what the hell is going on - where is love for one another .. where is truth?
Thanks for mentioning Canned Heat
I remember Duane with one leg up on the monitor speaker head down rocking front to back just killing it...
You were lucky to be there but we feel lucky reading your fantastic comment.. Thanks for sharing!!
The best live album ever
Bar fn none!😎
The greatest recording by the greatest of all time.
This intro has stayed stuck in my head since 71. I hear it a dozen times a day every day!
I saw this concert, way back when. I was 13, and to this day, I believe this is still one of the best albums of all time. So happy I was there. These guys were so gorgeous and talented.
Listening to this 1st Jan 2019 I won't hear anything better than this the whole year!
Duane Allman was the best guitar player I ever heard who didn’t read a note
Gregg Allman
The seamless work of two great drummers gives the band a wholly unique sound. They provide a superb rhythmic underpinning to all the great music the rest of the band laid over top.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live from Gainesville Florida I forget your belt 5 to 7 years ago please search and put up now thank you so much
You are so right. I remember, as a non-musician, trying to figure out what made the ABB sound so unique, and of course is was the twin drummers. I so miss going to their concerts.
p- t Dual drums are amazing! Love it!
RIP Duane, Barry, Butch and Greg...
Not Butch. He blew his brains out in front of his wife. he should rot in hell.
@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 that's bullshit you don't no what was in this man's head..
You should hope to leave behind his level of work...
@@paulfrombrooklyn5409 who the fuck are you to judge what he was going through. if we were to judge all rock stars by your standards the only bands left would be the Archies. keep your dumb ass opinion to yourself
Berry, not Barry.

It doesn’t get any better the rhythm section is excellent
Out of all the fantastic music on this album, I have to say this my favorite. Play all night!
This the gem on a diamond of a music listening experience still the best in my collection...
