Berry Oakley deserves some serious praise here as well. He is to bass as Duane was to slide. The entire band is killing it on this night. They were so much more than a southern rock band. In fact, Gregg said many times that the only reason people labled them "southern rock" was because of where they're from. They were a blues band above and beyond anything else. Truly one of the greatest bands in rock history. RIP Duane, Berry, Butch, and Gregg. You've left your mark and made the world a better place.

Blues yeah, but jazz and psychedelia too. This track has all of that. Then In the Dickey Betts years country and rockabilly flowed in. It was a tasty mix always expertly played.

Berry was overrated as was Duane in terms of playing. Both were heroin addicts which impacted their ability to play.

I saw this band twice in 1970, and the two things I noticed the most were Duane and Berry and their interplay. They were on opposite side of the stage and like 2 poles of a bar magnet, the energy flowed between them, ebbing and flowing, and the rest of the band hopped on to ride with them. It was truly musical magic. I am so privileged to have witnessed it. Changed my musical life.

Jk loftin. Couldn’t disagree more bro. Listen to allmans in 2010. Oteil outplays berry and trucks and Haynes vastly superior to Duane. Duane is overrated as fuck. Warren and derek a thousand times better bro. Listen to the tapes. Duane allman decent but he ain’t as hyped as you and others make him out to be bro. You should listen to 2010 version and you’ll know I am right bro

@@mojorising0071950 you guys need to stop with the overhype on Berry and Duane. The band was vastly superior when the brothers added Lamar and Chuck leavell. They got bigger in 73 and Derek and Warren were better players. Yo that’s fact not fiction. Try to listen with your ears bro. Duane was sloppy as fuck

The Brothers had virtually stopped playing Dreams. Then they get cleaned up and come back out with this great version. Duane does his solo work with cool Dickey notes and chords under. With Berry thumping along. Then Dickey is playing really cool stuff for a couple minutes while Duane has his slide playing soft notes. Then Berry has an almost solo before Duane screams in with his slide. In standard tuning!
I wish I had more technical knowledge of music. I’d probably appreciate even more what I’m hearing. And what I’m hearing is awesome!
    Love these guys!

Gregg is Ba-bro...as Duane used to call him. Older by little over a year. Just some trivia, but your thoughts brought tears to MY eyes...saw them a few months before music world caught on, in a small auditorium..maybe 200 seats...maybe. No one even there at the door to take our tickets! Don't know what seats we were assigned, thet werent used.....walked right down to first row, 6 feet from a small stage and listened to them play as if to a crowd of thousands, take a break after a while in the back corner of the stage, as they enjoyed some "refreshments", then get up and play for another I don't remember how long. The next year, they WERE playing to thousands. The next year, Duane was gone..followed by Berry a year later...in the same way at almost The same location. But, that show they put on for so few that night was the best birthday present of my life!

@Moon Shine of known recordings and of this quality there actually arent that many recordings of dreams thru 1971. fillmore west, brewer field house, and this one are some. tired id say not... i mean the band was at the peak of their hard drug use so maybe a little strung out but i hear too much energy in this recording to feel that theyre tired in the slightest. This is the definitive recording of live versions of dreams in my opinion.

Duane was master of buildng solos: tension and release, tension and release up to a final climax (yes, like really good sex) with the band following his arcs of intensity and then he would let someone else solo (if they dared.) Even today most rock guitarists don't think in terms of building a compositional improv solo like Duane does here.

Funny, because when Duane put the band together, he wanted musicians where each one was better than the next and all were better than he. NOW, whether I agree that Betts was better than Duane....I don't. But Duane respected him. 2 lead guitars working in harmony is just not an easy undertaking...with a tidal wave a percussion, 2 great drummers. 2 Key boards, Gregg and Levell, Berry (genius), and Gregg's throaty, blues voice...they worked together like nature...they knew just what to do. Gregg.. after losing his brother, was not sure people would want them...he took a chance, he wanted to make his brother's dream a reality...and he did a pretty good job. He made sure to separate his band from the ABBs band. Betts had never played slide on an electric guitar. Gregg said on a flight across the country, he started to try...he mastered it by the time they landed. One sad, sad thing is that they were starving when Duane died. Gregg says LITERALLY 2 weeks after Duane's death, they were millionaires....

Listen to the master fly. From 02:29 onward he is celestial, right through each movement. Both of the guitars are perfect, the wave of organs they ride is perfect, the drums are restrained. The playfulness at 03:39, the building of power starting at 04:05, which relaxes at 04:30 and ambles on pensively, curating that idea around 04:47, and then the great trill building up that crescendoes like great sex at 05:15, shuddering and fluttering like bird wings at 05:25, and final,ly getting it back together at 05:38 for a second, wrapping up thoughts, whipping the band up, now Berry fretting diads and triads through 06:30 and then lumbering along through the harshness that concludes at 06:52 with perfect tenderness of gentle exploration that gradually works towards that wonderfully lo-fi playfulness and crescendoes again at 08:17...Jesus, it never ends. The segue at 08:58... this is the greatest recording of the greatest guitarist of all time.

I was a student at SB 66-71 :-) I saw there the very 1st Allman Bros show at SB with Chicago as the headliners on a Thursday Night .....~ 1968? Where the ABB was Unknown!!!
2 sets ( I saw both sets) with the ABB playing last for the 2nd set, finishing with the Mt Jam with ~ 50 kids total, left in the Gym dancing in front of the stage,,,,,.changed my Musical Life :-))) I still perform that song as maybe my FAV ! I wish the Film from the ABB's Fillmores Last Concert would surface! !!!!

I was there from 69-73' - some amazing nights of music. They didn't 'headline' till this '71 show. Remember, opening up for Mountain? or Delaney and Bonnie a week after the Dead shows?

Simon Bolivar Hi Simon......Hmmm I woulda thought they headlined in 69? I can't remember specifics of any of their shows except for that 1st one........ ;-) Can you imagine if Jimi Hendrix was still alive !! I can remember how hard his passing hit me and where I was.........I was living in Roth 1 and walked over to the Mess Hall.......... :-( PS One of THE greatest anecdotes I ever heard...... about Duanne starting Slide is on the Muscle Shoals documentary. If you havn't seen that work.........its wonderful !

I would think that the B&W film of last day at Fillmore would be somewhere in Wolfgangs Vault if it exists....Sure would dig seeing that as well as the Atlanta Pop Fest 1970 footage that has supposedly already been worked on...

I've talked with Mossyi (the lighting guy) about those vault tapes and Seth who manned the board passed away within the last 3-5 years due to Crones Disease. He hasn't been able to locate his parents to see if he could get a hold of those boxes and boxes of SBDS. I've attached a link here for you...home.comcast.net/~gv0000/Stony_Brook_Archive.pdf

Why are those guys so glamorous compared to nowadays "stars". They even more change their kind of playing. They are more spontaneous, more experimental, more innovative. Especially the play of Duane is an example for what I mean. It is fresh after 40 years. No mistakes in harmonic and structure. He is a real master of his instrument. (I don't like ... he's the best ever - we don't know who is coming next)
