      I don't know about northerner gaff rigs but around here the gaff rigged boats of the same class will take twice the time to finish on the same regatta. Mind you they don't have booms so not the most efficient gaff rigs.

    Princesa do Tejo's is a beautiful boat, loving the colourful the paint job :-). I've not seen Brailing lines before, and am now wondering if something similar could be done to secure the mid-sail reefing eyes to the boom on a "standard" (or is that boring?!) sloop rig, to save having to go on deck and tie short lines through the reefing points in a blow. Thanks for sharing!

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      Hi David!
      I have no experience with sloop rigs.
      I would imagine that you would end up with A LOT of lines if you have to use one brailing line for each tie point, and for each reef line!
      But like I said, I know little of sloop rigs, maybe someone more experienced wants to comment or even try doing it! 😉

    So the grayling lines are to reef the latern sail? Looks like a good system as you can do that whilst under sail presumably.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +4

      Hi Ben!
      The brailing lines main purpose is to keep the sail under control/tied while not sailing.
      BUt...they are also very useful for reefing when running . Another use is, just before a gybe in strong winds, when 2 or 3 can be pulled for a few seconds to reduce sail area and make the gybing a lot safer, and then release immediately after.
      I'll try to make a video about reefing the lateen sail soon. 😉

    • @TheBoatRambler

      You shouldn't do it as the sail doesn't have any reinforcements in that area. also the more brailing lines you pull the more the sail looses its shape. But you can use it while running.

    Can the boat sail upwind very well with three brail lines made fast like that?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      Hi MrChyort.
      Not really. It can be sailed for short periods, but it is not designed to be a reefing system.
      Not only the sail shape wont be optimal, the sail lacks reinforcements on those areas and would very likely be damage from constant use or strong winds.

      @@TheBoatRambler Obrigado, dei com a sua pagina por acaso, reitero os meus parabéns pelo seu trabalho, só é pena é este conceito não ser muito usado em Portugal, como em Inglaterra e França onde são construídas pequenas embarcações com cunho tradicional, ex.: François Vivier que tem projetos muito bonitos. Por cá não me parece, era uma forma de não deixar embarcações tradicionais morrer, o custo de estaleiro não é para todos, digo isto quando me deram o orçamento duma "Aiola". Vou tentar construir, pode ser que saia um bote ou algo parecido. Boa sorte e continuação.

      Hi guys,
      the answer is "with great difficulty". The method is the same as on any other boat, just roll the foot of the sail. it's hard to do because in strong winds the yard will be moving a lot with the swell/chop and more crew is needed to do it quick.
      Some have the reef line at the top of the sail which prevents the swinging yard but the sail has to be fully lowered to set the reef.

  • @logohigh1

    I suppose that tiny job is designed to help you get through a tack , Is it original to sail plan ?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  Год назад

      Hi Duncan,
      The brailing lines main purpose is to stow/furl the sail quickly. It can be used to briefly reduce sail for a jibe in strong winds but it should not be used as a reef line as the sail doesn't have strong reinforcement patches to take the full force of the wind for long.

    I've heard that these lateen rigs are a real handful to handle, especially in a fair puff. Is there any truth to this?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      Hi!
      The difficulty increases since there is a LOT of sail area on these boats. Princesa is a 29ft, shallow draft boat (3.5ft) with no ballast and total sail area of 55sqm. How many 29ft boats do you know with that much sail and no ballast?
      Carrying 46sqm in one sail alone makes it difficult to handle. Now add a 100kg yard to it, (a few good meters above the water line) and you can imagine the forces in play in strong winds, especially during a gybe!! If the skipper doesn't know what he is doing a gybe can sink the boat or break yard/mast etc! That's why sometimes they pull a couple of brailing lines during the gybe.

    Great video, wonder why the Portuguese always get the credit for the Lateen sail when surely the system comes from Egypt, the Arab people have been using them since the time of the Pharaohs, so credit where credit is due, not colonial theft.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  4 месяца назад +1

      Maybe because the Portuguese used the Lateen sail to cross oceans to unknown continents and even sail around the world. As for “colonial theft”, well unless you know of some Portuguese colony around Egypt ….I don’t know what you mean.
      And by the way, the discoveries and colonial times shaped the world you live in right now.
      All countries were formed and taken by force, every single country! For those who don’t agree, well they can start by tracing whether they live in Celts/Visigoths/Arabs/ /Indians territory and give it back to them!
      I can’t understand people trying to judge something that happened centuries ago by 21st century standards.

      @@TheBoatRambler You are right as far as identity is concerned, like it or not most of our countries have been occupied multiple times by different powers. I was not suggesting that Portugal ever had anything to do with Egypt, other than the fact that who ever seems to be top of the heap at any given time seems to assimilate whatever it finds then rewrites history claiming whatever it finds as having been it’s own invention, nothing new there of course. As to who sailed where first guess we will never really know the answer to that one, you ever heard of the Piri Reis map?
