  • Lateen sail boats head to head on an unbelievable race.
    This amazing traditional sailing boat race took place at our local sailing school Beira Mar Nautica. These boats, canoas do Tejo, were used for fishing and cargo over 100 years ago.
    Princesa do Tejo skippered by Bruno and Papa Milhas skippered by João.
    Papamilhas was the clear underdog at around 2 feet smaller. Couple that with the fact that this was her first time in many years rigged with a lateen sail and a new skipper/owner!! But man can she fly!!
    Princesa do Tejo on the other hand has won quite a few regattas and has had that sail for some years, so much so that it's actually in need of replacement!
    These two boats put on such a performance that all other boats stood no chance!
    Breathtaking to the end!!

      Princesa's Rig is on the way out, new sail soon! 😉

    What a great follow through - have just watched a 'how to sail a lateen' so this great race helped mightily to cement things in to place. Have been watching car/motorcycle 'souping-up' but it just doesn't have this beauty for me.

    I mean really who needs AC75's and IMOCA60's, these simple honest working boats are way more exciting here! Nothing to teach the Tuga about sailing.
    Video Rambler thanks so much, I feel like I have waited a lifetime to have Lateen rig explained, it is such closed world if English is your only language. More please. Something on how these shoal draft hull shapes generate enough lift to get to windward would be great.

      Hi!
      These boats are awesome and some can point as high as my GIS! They are not that "shoal draft" , Princesa has like 4 feet draft near the transom.
      If you want to know a bit more how these Lateen rigs work i have a couple more videos about it. 😉

      @@TheBoatRambler Yeah, that's totally understandable. Last thing you want to do is smash these lovely boats into each other. I just kept wanting him to shift further away for more separation coming into the mark, and then he could turn inside and get above the other boat. Sorry, I spent too many years racing - hard to get out of the system.

    Close, but that bottom rounding about half way through the video, where you maintained an overlap to the mark, that was a tactical error because it forced you to do a wide rounding in his lee. You actually had the advantage on approaching the mark, by forcing the other boat to do a close pass, made him round wide pushing him further downwind. If you had slowed enough to just break the overlap almost at the mark, you could have started rounding before coming level with the mark. This would have allowed you to round inside of his stern which would have given you the upwind advantage at the start of that windward leg. Now you know how to win a rounding battle.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      Thanks for the tips Ken!
      You are correct on your approach but It wouldn't be easy to just slow down almost 5000Kg with a 12m yard and 55sqm sail when going downwind...... 😁

    • @kenwebster5053
      @kenwebster5053 3 года назад +2

      @@TheBoatRambler True, it's not easy with any sail boat but possible & there can be risks. I was really hoping to see you cheekily cut inside behind him and take the lead on that rounding, that would have been so fun to see.

      Thanks for the honest feedback, it's always welcome.
      There was a lot of wind noise which I couldn't cancel out so I opted for music only .
      Guess I could have dialed the audio level down a notch or two...😅
      I do tend to spend a lot more time fixing the audio tracks nowadays, it's a continuous learning process...😉
