Traditional Sailing Boats

- What started as a sail test for my Goat Island Skiff ended up as the first trip to Rat Island sailing in the company of a Portuguese Tejo canoe, "Princesa do Tejo", once traditional work boat is now owned by my friend Bruno for leisure and regattas.
We stopped at Rat Island and then proceeded to Montijo, a village a few miles to the Este. Wind picked up and was quite a challenge to return under full sail on my GIS. In total we sailed around 10nm.
Thanks Bruno and Vanessa! What a great day sailing!!

The Goat really is a rocket. Princesa do Tejo is a beautiful boat.
Great sail.
Great boat, great build and a pretty damn good sailor. 👍👍👍
Thanks Fred! 😊 what a fun day it was!
two very beautiful boats, GIS are just built to GO! It gave a great opportunity to see you steering back and forth.
Thanks Richard!
The GIS is a real joy to sail in flattish waters and strong winds. 😁
Thank you for sharing and making these videos. So great to see you enjoying your boat after all the hard work. Enjoy summer from a cold Southern Hemisphere
Thanks Jtolken!
I sure hope i can take Forager out plenty of times in the next few months. I'll make sure to share as much as I can! 😉
Beautiful and awsome sailing! Congratulations Teo!
Thanks a lot Robert! 🙃
Great sailing trip. The skiff is very fast and responsive. Nice filming too!!
Thanks a lot Dion!
Just fantastic! Some of the best planing reach footage of the Goat island Skiff.
We don't actually have much taken from other boats - so it was a great opportunity. And the traditional Canoa is an amazing boat to look at while sailing!
Thanks Michael! A lot more to come as I will sail many times with Princesa do Tejo and other similar boats.... 😉🙃
Great vid!
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it! 😉
As velas latinas são muito legais
Get Post! Look forward to seeing more.
Thank you!
I'll keep uploading every week! 😉
Sweet rig you got there too!
@@TheBoatRambler Thanks
Olá, parabéns pelo video, se possivel gostava de ver e experimentar esse barco.
para vêr é fácil basta combinar e aparecer pelo clube. experimentar é que vai depender do tempo e das marés.
Se pensares cá vir manda-me um email. 😉
Nice to see you again :)
Hey Tomasz! Dont't worry, I'm not going anywhere...or better still, I will go but I'll take you guys with me! 😉
@@TheBoatRambler I live 700 km from the nearest coast, so I always wait for your films impatiently ;)
Wow!! No lakes or rivers you can sail around you? 😮
You couldn't put a couple of reefs in while underway?
Put her in irons using a droge sea anchor over the bows and drop the main?
Hi Andy,
This trip wasn't planed, The boat wasn't even fully finished. I had no cleats or reefing arrangement.
Nowadays with my reefing setup I can drop sail, set a reef and carry on in about 1 minute, no need for drogues, and the GIS can be sailed in very strong winds with 2 reefs on.

There are days for me, and I'm sure there will be days for you, when four knots of wind is all I need, want and, I'm happy with it.
I made the previous comment early in your video but I want you to know I really enjoyed watching the entire video. You and your friend have boat handling skills that speak to your obvious years of experience. That was a very enjoyable video.
Hi Mark! I agree with you 100%! some days one just wants to take it easy...😉
Is that a gaff sail? Love the paint job on the Princesa, a real beauty!
Hi!
Princesa do Tejo is rigged with a Latin/Lateen sail and my GIS has a Lug sail.
Princesa's colors are awesome! 🙃
I wonder how the Princess would perform with a lug & jib rig. 🤔
Princesa flies a small jib and a mizzen too! Ofc if they could get a rig with a boom it would increase sail control....But that is a traditional fishing boat and booms are not part of that tradition. 😉
Parabéns. Eu assisti todos os filmes, 30 semanas. Estou impressionado. Estou tentando construir um barco para "fins de semana", só sinto falta da garagem, da oficina - foi isso que invejei.
Desculpe pelo português grosseiro - estou usando um tradutor.
Cumprimentos
Thank you!
Hey man don't give up! I waited 20 years for this! It was worth every second! 😉
Hallo from South Africa. I truly enjoyed your journey with the building of Forager. I do detect a bit of OCD, everything must be perfect, but that is why she turned out so beautifully. Great job! I am looking forward to many more sailing adventures with you! Regards Herman!
Hi Herman!
Yes I've suspected of some OCD for some time now! 😂
Thanks for watching, and stay safe!
Love Bruno’s boat the colors are so vibrant how big is it how many meters is it?
Hi Henry!
Have a look at this video for all your answers... 😁

Ballast question. Do you use ballast to improve stability? I enjoy your channel very much. I built a Boldger Gypsy much like your boat but it is very "tippy".
I personally don't use any ballast on my GIS but some GIS sailors put a 25L jerrican filled with water either side of the centercase.
Have you seen the secondary stability video? I have 3 videos looking at capsize/stability for the GIS.

Thank you. I learned a lot from the capsize videos. I will try adding jerry cans of water for ballast the next time I sail. I might even capsize intentionally to build confidence in recovery!
The Princess is a lovely looking boat. What was it made for?
Hey Benedict!
Princesa was a fishing boat. There's a video interview to Bruno, (her skipper) on my channel! 😉
@@TheBoatRambler I saw that in the recommendations afterwards, and watched it. A fine looking boat!
TOP :)
Amanhã de manhã Vou dar uma voltinha! 😉
@@TheBoatRambler também ia... se não fosse o trabalho :/

When you sailing the GIS, does the slapping of the flat bottom on swells bother you?
Hi Dion,
there are ways to minimize/eliminate it.
I usually sit around the mid seat area to keep the bow in the water, that way the bottom isn't exposed to often.
If reaching I let the boat heel and the chines will act almost like "V bottom".
But sometimes there's nothing I can do about it and just have to live with it...😅
@@TheBoatRambler do you know of any other boats similar to the GIS but has more of a v-bottom shape?
Dion,
one of the skiffs I considered before building the GIS was the Argie 15. Same weight, but more parts to make and assemble.
Just Google Argie 15. 😉
12:09 fish jumping out of the water
it's a grey mullet, they often land inside the boat! 😉
Hi Teo,
Where did you bought the sail of Forager ?
Hi Christophe!
I had it made by PL Sails in Portugal. But there is now suppliers of the GIS sails in AU, USA and Europe at least.
Have a look at the GIS FB group, the guys will let you know who to contact.
@@TheBoatRambler thanks
Use water balast
Hi KodaEV, some of the GIS owners do use it but I have felt no need to do so in the last 3 seasons and I'm still to accidentally capsize my skiff! 🤞
Should have had me with you , I weigh 230 lbs 😄👍👍🇺🇸
😁 We put 660 pounds worth of crew aboard to test the GIS at launch. No problem whatsoever! even all on the same tack it didn't flip...just! 😬
That's living.
I found the area on Google maps
Hey Charles!
It's all about having fun! 😉
