      Hi Dave!
      Yes they are, and there is still more speed in store if more "rail ballast" is used!! 😄

      Hi!
      Yes there are several GIS owners who carry it on the roof rack, and some on smaller cars.
      My GIS unfortunately is too heavy with all the mods and the Birch plywood to do this.

    Gosh, they really accelerate in those light winds!
    Is that an adjustable downhaul on the boom, to enable dynamic adjustment of the sail tension?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  2 года назад +1

      Hi Alistair,
      The downhaul allows to adjust the luff tension and depending on how far back you place it in relation to the mast it will also serve as a sort of boom vang.

  • @Sailor-Dave
    @Sailor-Dave 4 года назад +2

    Fantastic sailing? Do you have any protection for that fine-pointed bow in case you hit something on landing? How close-winded is that balanced lug?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  4 года назад

      Thanks David!
      I have a "sacrificial" thin wooden trim glued along the bow it's slightly longer/lower (maybe 3mm) than the bottom panel and rounded off. It wont take a serious hit but it's seams to at least prevent some damage to the plywood there. Some of the guys have fiber glassed that area.
      The GIS is able to keep the same heading as all the latin sail boats around here. If I point higher than it loses speed and it's not worth it due to the tides strength around here.

    I didn't see any ballast in the keel, does the boat have/need any?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +3

      Hi Charles!
      No the GIS like most lightweight sailing dinghies/skiffs does not have ballast other than rail ballast (and that will depend on how much you eat!) 😁
      Some ppl put jerrycans with water either side of the centercase when sailing solo. Much better than steel as once you capsize it wont sink your boat! 😉

  • @tomharrell1954
    @tomharrell1954 4 года назад +2

    Hi Sailor, I wish for you to go fast and have a fast boat!
    Look at 4:29 on video. Your sail at the foot does not have the best shape!!!
    If completely unrolled, not reefed, main sail should be tighter next to mast. Across the boom sail should be tighter.
    Tight sail to give flat wing shape in heavier wind. More control more speed.
    Sail more Cupped in light wind to catch more wind to go faster.
    God Bless
    Have a great sail!

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  4 года назад +3

      Hi Thomas!!
      You are absolutely correct, there were a lot of small adjustments to be made to my setup back there! And then some!!
      That was the first time I could compare my setup to another, live. And a good thing Pedro has had his GIS for over two years so he could show me a thing or two!!
      Starting with the halyard which has since been replaced by Spectra(no stretch) and the boom and yard pulled back a bit.
      Still have a lot to learn about setting and sailing the GIS. But I have time and I like to experiment.... 😁
