  • We all met at the club by chance that day, and since the optis were racing we decided to race against each other all in different boats. No handycaps, just for fun. The Vaurien had a crew of 2, the Topper 14 Sport had a crew of 3, and both GISs raced single handed.
    Decent wind, and awesome fun!!

    This looks like so much fun! I used to race penguins in frostbite races in the late eighties. I miss it. The GIS reminds me of the penguin dinghies.
    Teo, your build videos are inspiring me to build a GIS so I can have that kind of fun again. This video kinda seals the deal. I miss sailboat racing. I am moving to a new home in January and there is a garage that would fit building a GIS.

      Hi Danielle!
      You are really brave! Frigid water and me don't mix too well! 😬
      I can see the resemblance with the smaller Penguins. The GIS is a lot of fun to sail and really versatile.
      If you really want to build one...go for it!! I waited for almost 20 years to build my GIS, and now I'm loving every minute!
      Get back sailing !! 😁

    Great sailing and super fun! The GISs should have an advantage, given what seems to be their larger sail area and planing hulls.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  Год назад +2

      Hi Ray!
      yes it was all good fun!
      The Vaurien had the same sail area as the GIS and the Topper had a bit more. The GIS does have an advantage downwind with its single sail in particular since the others couldn't go wing on wing. They are all planning hulls tho.😉

    Excellent Teo! GIS is fast!
    We've never raced with our GIS and it's not in racing condition. Anyway, neither I nor my crew are in racing condition. But I always compare myself and our GIS to other little boats. There are several RS Visions on our Zegrze Lake - they are just as fast as our GIS in two, but none of them overtook us until they picked up the gennaker.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +2

      Hi Robert!
      Well, by the looks of it my GIS wasn't in racing conditions either!! 😅 will have to pay a bit more attention before I set sail I guess...
      The GIS is really versatile, I can go camping, fishing etc and still have a fast boat!!
      I actually went out with Bruno(on the Topper14) previously and I can tell you that with little wind the GIS sails circles around the Topper14.
      Brilliant design.😉

      The wind there "jumps" a lot! We were on a kind of a bay, close to shore, and some places were more sheltered than others, but yes for the most part the further away from shore (left ) the better the wind. Although on the first leg Pedro went left and I went right/middle/left and I got to the first buoy first.

    • @jamesdwyer3238
      @jamesdwyer3238 3 года назад +1

    Fun race. The GIS sails well against the competition. There seems to be a lack of understanding of the port, starboard rule. 🤔 btw, I think you need to prepare better. Halyard, downhaul, slipping blocks on the boom, getting lost. With those fixed, you would have done much better. Looking forward to the next one. 👍

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +1

      Hi Barry!
      These races weren't planed. We just happen to be there that day and decided to race.
      I had done a few rig changes to my GIS and as you can see not all of them worked! 😅
      As for Starboard rule, we were all just having fun, no one is gonna shout or force others, in particular if they aren't even looking!! 🤣
      We are all good friends and having fun together is all that matters!
      Cheers

    Nice )
    Actually these Skiffs are good, so I'm not surprised at all about the result)
    I started to sail dinghy last summer in local river pond (the only one small place to sail here in my hometown). We even had few races on Optis and Lasers and also trainings on j/70 type of boat (not actually j/70 but something like that) and Open 800 boat on Volga river (open 800 is something like GP26). And all of these boats was really fun to sail, and in my opinion sailing on any tipe of boat is absolute joy, doesn't matter is it small or big)

    Teo. Hi. How does a GIS compare to a laser? Thx Dave

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +2

      Hi Dave,
      The Laser on that video has a 4.7 sail so no chance at all against the GIS but I'm sure a Laser Standard will be a different story.
      It is really hard to compare both boats as they are quite different…in fact the only thing they have in common is that if you sit on one side of the boat with no wind you’ll capsize! 😅😜😅
      From what I remember, my Laser turned faster, accelerated a bit quicker and maybe pointed just a little bit higher. But the set up on my GIS is still far from finalized or tuned!
      The GIS is more stable, a LOT drier and really versatile, and those were the reasons why I built one. A fast boat I can row, go camping and fishing in, and still planes so I can race a bit!! AND I CAN REEF AND LOWER SAIL!!!
      But to each it’s own…

  • @tomharrell1954
    @tomharrell1954 3 года назад +1

    I don’t think the sail is rigged right on your boom. The boom has good action good control from the lines. But the sail is not getting control from the boom.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      Hi Thomas!
      The sail is attached to the boom in 2 places only, tack and clew, not much to go wrong there.
      The biggest problem was that I didn't raise the yard high enough and then downhaul maxed out due to it.
      Without enough tension from the downhaul the sail shape will be terrible once the outhaul on the boom is cranked up!

  • @AcidFlp
    @AcidFlp 3 года назад +1

    So cool to see this compression. Do you feel that higher ratio at downhaul (4:1?) could help with trimming sail meanwhile race?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +1

      Thanks!
      I believe I have more than 4:1 it's a double block +1 singleblock on the downhaul sistem.
      could change to two triple blocks tbh...🤔

    • @AcidFlp
      @AcidFlp 3 года назад +1

      @@TheBoatRambler Oh, I see at video about reefing. Interesting if pulling downhaul is the same feeling like my experience with boom vang - doesn't matter how many blocks used - always feeling that more could be better. :D
      BTW, have you try to make sail pumping at downwind? It is possible to use this technique at GIS?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      I have never tried sail pumping with the GIS but never raced it before either so.... 😁

    • @MikStorer
      @MikStorer 3 года назад +3

      @@TheBoatRambler sail pumping is very effective with that big mainsail.
      But much faster is to keep looking behind and go left or right on the run to be on the correct side for each gust. Never forget the sailing by the lee option either ... it is pretty fast and helps you got over to the gust when it is on the leeward side of the boat. Windward heel works well downwind too.
