Beautiful craftsmanship, I enjoyed the holes in the transom braces. Clever wooden hatch cover on the rear bench, fabulous use of a flat sided bucket. I will definitely add the non approved Teo sealed side tanks to my plans, along with your style transom braces. Thank you for sharing this.

On my new GIS I have buoyancy reserves which are Portata rolling rollers (Roll Boats). This is quite useful in the event of a capsize: there is much less water to enter the boat (it remains higher on the water).

Great, realistic video. Also perhaps a few things that could be learned from. 1) On capsize, don't grab gunnel - a boat with wooden mast is likely to lay on its side without turtling for a bit if you don't pull it over. 2) use leverage on the center-board to right quickly. 3) Modify a build with caution -- it seems possible that the starboard bench seat kept some of the water from draining out as you righted the boat. If the wind is going to cause a new capsize, then take down the sail; but usually its enough to loosen the mainsheet; before it gets waterlogged, the sail can add some flotation while you're preparing to right the boat and maybe avoid that turtle! Thanks for the great video.
1) and 2) it's done! (and my mast is carbon)
3) the benches are not glued along the hull, the water could come out easily, not against the manufacturer of this GIS made an "armored" hull and it is much heavier than the GIS in kit form and sinks more.
The turtle was made at the first capsize, before having time to touch the sail!
For the video: I accept my mistake and I share it, it's not every day that we can film this "stunt" 😉 !
I tested a capsize on my new GIS, the benches are "watertight" however the "Portata" launching rollers under the benches prevent it from sinking too much, the difference: only 7 cm in the bottom of the boat (and emptied with the "quick empties").

Dang!! I recognize your situation. My nickname is Turtle because I turtled a Sweet 16 a couple of years ago. I was hoping that you could take down the sail. I had a very difficult time taking mine down and could not get upright with it up. You did great and look to be well prepared. Great video!!!
Thank you ! I was not very well prepared but it ended well. Since then I have modified the system to lower the wing more easily. I hope not to start over, so as not to have the same small name!

Yes, less sail but more practice also!. You did not control the gybe so the gybe controlled you! Good experience gained!

@@tomedom5107 Thank you...A French expression says "the ridiculous does not kill" ....If my (bad) experience can be of use to others! I'm not chilly, so it's my usual outfit, even in winter. The wind was quite swirling and gusty, I had too much sail (I think) and I looked too much at the boat turned over in front of me, and there you have it, 2 turtles! ... Good navigation!
After righting the boat, there should never remain so much water inside. With strong winds, you will get into real trouble. This boat needs a lot of foam flotation, firmly tied to the boat's inner side.
Flotation chambers forward and at the tramsom is not very useful. This is my own experience😢 Good luck.😊
Totally agree ! ... This GIS was a construction on plan. The thicknesses of wood and reinforcements were very significant, the interior was raised, and it had a waterproof central box. Result a much heavier GIS than expected: 160 kg equipped (around 350 lbs). On my new GIS, I tested the same capsize, resulting in only 7 cm of water inside (evacuated easily with 2 Andersen Automatic Bailers). Much easier on my new GIS 👍!
Nice footage! Hi, happened to me, my son and my Scamp as well in a force 5 gale bur with some higher waves. Sadly, i don't have a video. Nice to see a real life capsize recovery. All the "let's tey it in nice weather conditions"- videos don't show the real stuff. We needed 3 trys for recovery, because the ammount of water inside the boat made it very tippy. So i'll add 2 large handholes in the stern to have a better grip that works as a scupper (Gargoyle) as well...
A small ladder at the back can be very practical too, in case of big difficulties

Bad luck happened to me a few times. The water in the boat just turns you over.

@@gisskerrykeleren3614 Lazy Jacks prevent the sail from ending up all over the cockpit, is a self-bundling sail system used by Teo, invented by the ancient Chinese.

@@The1stGurehaundo Yes, I know what it is but I did not see how that could prevent me from capsizing :) ... I know the Téo assembly, very practical but when the boat is vertical, I do not believe that it is would have been practical after the capsize (it might get caught everywhere). On the other hand, since then, I have modified the system to lower the sail more easily (I like when it's as simple as possible)

Le mat ne semble pas flotter comme le mat des autres Goat Island Skiffs.
The mast does not seem to float like the masts of other Goat Island Skiffs.
Beaucoup de GIS ont des mâts en bois, celui-ci est en carbone. De plus, après de second renversement le vent arrivait (assez fort) derrière la coque, ce qui le plongeait encore un peu plus.
@@gisskerrykeleren3614 Il y a un GIS (celui de Boat Rambler sur youtube ruclips.net/video/WGSrhVVWu6w/видео.html) sur lequel ont été ajoutés des caissons de flottabilité qui servent de bancs en quelque sorte. L'eau à l'air bonne par chez vous :-)
@@frederic1000001 oui, je connais ce site. Teo a rajouté ses caissons l'an dernier.
Dans le même genre de gabarit il y a le Silmaril qui est moins "capricieux" que le GIS...Le Silmaril "marche" très bien, est ballasté et se redresse (presque) tout seul.
Pour ce qui est de la température de l'eau, elle était disons "fraiche" mais je ne suis pas frileux :-))

Bonne question ! et la réponse est très simple ! …Toutes mes vidéos sont en FR, sauf exceptionnellement celle-ci (qui est en version FR également !).
On m'a posé beaucoup de questions (en anglais surtout) pour savoir comment j'avais pu filmer aussi longtemps sous l'eau, si j'étais plongeur, etc...donc il était plus simple pour moi de refaire une version anglaise que d'essayer de répondre clairement à chaque question sans visuel (je n'ai jamais eu autant de questions qu'avec ce "naufrage" d'ailleurs, étonnant) ….Bref, j'ose espérer que ma réponse (en FR) à votre question sera compréhensible !
