  • This week we have some awesome footage of our lateen rigged traditional boats. I have put together some of the best footage taken aboard Princesa do Tejo. A lot of it hasn't ever been released or seen by anyone...until now!
    Hope you enjoy it! 😉

    I have been fascinated by Lateen rigged sails and had so many questions about how to work them. You've answered all my questions with very informative and fun videos. Thank you.

    What a great family camp-cruiser one of those would make! Or, a great sail-training vessel for kids to learn their history.

      And Bruno uses Princesa for both!! He goes with his wife and kids often and sometimes makes announcements on FB to take ppl on a daily trip for free!
      We are also trying to start a school program to take young kids sailing aboard the traditional boats. 😉

    Ah yes, thanks Teo... if asked about the rotating spar, i will forward your advice on the down wind maneuver.....and yes i feel you are correct in that it would work best with smaller boats.

    Hi Teo.
    I thought with the lateen, when tacking you had to dip or swing the yard somehow to the other side of the mast in some dangerous way!!
    Very relieved that is not so!
    Great video of these fast, handy and beautiful boats.
    Thank you.

      Hi Nicholas, some lateen rigged boats do dip the sail but usually smaller boats. this yard weighs around 100kg we would need a lot of crew to dip it!

    Lateens are interesting, but rare around the UK. Do those working boats you were racing use a centreboard or……?

      These boats have a 1foot deep full keel and no Ballast! Boat weight and crew position is all that keeps them upright! 😅

      the shots are taken with a 360 camera. It has two 180º lenses on opposing sides of the camera and when the software stitches the two images together it removes the stick automatically. Try looking for the selfie stich shadow😉

    Nice. Question: Who owns the rights for the dam @ upper Tagus, where it splits off? Spain, Portugal?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +1

      Hi!
      Everything in Spanish territory is controlled by Spain. There is a treaty nevertheless regarding how much water they can dump/hold to make sure Portugal has an appropriate amount of water flowing. I don't think it works to well tbh but it is what it is...😉

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад

      They did!! they didn't have too but got too scared and started the outboard and moved a couple of feet!! 😂
      We race to local rules only. Unfortunately not enough boats to impose too many rules and still get enough ppl to participate on the regattas...

    How does the lateen sail compare to the lug sail?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  2 года назад +2

      Hi,
      the Lug is more versatile, easier handle and to reef, and much safer on jibes etc.
      I believe the lateen sail points slightly higher, at least Princesa can point slightly higher than my GIS in particular if i'm on the "bad tack"

    What kind of Sail and rig would you advise for a beginning Sailor?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 года назад +1

      I'm no expert but get a boat with a single sail. Probably the simplest wound be a triangular sail.

    • @jaysonlima9271
      @jaysonlima9271 3 года назад +2

      I learned on a sunfish style boat (same kind of look, same basic rig bit made by someone else) great fun very, very wet. When I got a little older (early to mid teens) I spent a lot of time on a Catalina 14.2 as well as a similar sized plywood skiff with a tiny outboard. The 14.2 took some readjusting too because of the sloop rig but the learning curve wasn't very steep because of a basic understanding of how sails work formed on the sunfish.
