Engines of Amtrak - EMD F69PHAC

  • The F69PHAC is yet another experimental locomotive for Amtrak. It was America's first AC traction diesel locomotive and would be a big stepping stone for future locomotive development. While not incredibly well documented compared to other locomotives in this series, there's still a bit to learn about regarding the F69, especially its experience running with the German ICE train-set!
Sorry that this episode was a bit short, there wasn't really a ton of information available and pictures/videos I could use without copyright issues were few and far between. Either way, I hope you still enjoyed!

Very interesting video! One cool and little known bit of history is that prior to the construction of the F69's, Amtrak/Siemens rebuilt F40 number 202 with AC traction following a derailment in 1984. It's currently at TTCI. Looking forward to the new Acela Express episode!

Great episode on this little known class! A bit short, but still great with other references to the time period (Super Mario World for 1991). Not a fan of the horns, but at least they're not as bad as the Avelia Liberty's original horn.

Thank you for this video. I mistakenly for years thought it was a Metra F 40 PH slanted model. But more like a prototype later on for the Metra version. Short lived unfortunately, not one scale model has ever been produced with the F 59 Amtrak or the slanted version on Metra commuter lines. Would love to see them. Your video is very informative, I didn't notice it being short at all. Very quick and educational towards these prototype models. 👏👏👏👍👍🙂 .

I hope these engines get more recognition as Amtrak buys more Siemens products. The AC drive technology improved a lot in the 25 years between the F69PHAC and SC-44, but it's still the same basic drive system, and more importantly, it got Siemens' foot in the door of the North American locomotive business.

My original California personalized license plates for my 1976 GMC Motorhome are "GMC F69" and I was going to number the unit "455" for the Oldsmobile 455 V8 engine in the motorhome, even though that number was never used for the F69PHAC. Over time I have decided to paint the GMC as SDP40F #644. It will parked outside the new 'Hi-Level Diner' restaurant north of the Cajon Pass in a few years. The restaurant will be an Amtrak Superliner Diner from the 1981-1983 production build. Stay tuned and check out GoFundMe!

"It was America's first AC traction diesel locomotive"
    not really
    in 1984 BBC/ABB had tested the three-phase traction with the M640 #CP4744 then in 1987 with the F40AC #F202.
both of them were equipped with thyristor voltage source inverters which controlled all the motors in parallel.
During 1987 also siemens equipped the EMD268 with 6 thyristor current source inverters each driving a single motor.

Didn't know about these projects! Also, there were even earlier AC locomotives, the GP38AC and SD38AC built 1970/71. As far as I know almost all 261 GP38ACs were changed to 38-2s. 15 SD38ACs were built and some still run with their AC alternator. SRY Rail Link still operates all 4 of the BC Hydro SD38s, with one being a SD38AC.
