Amtrak in the early 1970s was still fumbling around with their rag-tag gallery of antiquated and rustic equipment. While the railroad had received their first new locomotive in the form of the ill-fated EMD SDP40F, it wasn't saving Amtrak from bad press and negative public perception. By 1973, much of the general public was viewing Amtrak as merely just slapping their paint scheme and logo onto aging and unreliable equipment. On top of that, the SDP40F was more commonly assigned to long distance trains heading out of Chicago to the west coast, leaving old equipment to manage the intercity trains outside the Northeast Corridor. So, Amtrak placed a new focus on faster intercity trains and looked to the more railway-innovative Europe for answers. This resulted in the French Turboliner train-set. How did the Turboliner turn out on Amtrak and what led to their quiet removal from service? Find out in this remade episode of Engines of Amtrak!

Heya, thanks for watching the video! I hope you enjoyed this remake! Its definitely way better than the original episode from 2017 lol. I'll be keeping the original episode up if you wanna compare the two or just go back and watch the old one. I hope you'll look forward to the future Engines of Amtrak remakes in the coming months, along with Engines of New York Central!
Ooo cool also love the music
yes
Can you publish all of your art? On a website
Where did you get the RTG for Trainz
@@manny454railfanning9 I made the RTG
2:37 They had 3 customers for the original RTG: SNCF (orange), Amtrak (red/white/blue) and Iranian Railways (blue). After decommissioning the SNCF ones were shipped to Iran and fitted with their signature sand filter intakes. Egyptian railways also bought a few with a more TGV like nose design
For the capacity issue: In France they added MU capability to these, which Amtrak never got (no connector plugs on the nose)
Nice remake! Amtrak definitely needs more multiple units like the turboliners for intercity service.
Nice to see you again pensyfan19 :)
It is amazing.
Welp they making new ALC 42Es now
Well, now they are in the form of “Amtrak Airó” trains
Due to highly variable ridership, they'd have to be modular units like the old BUDD RDCs or the South Shore Line's Nippon-Sharyo units, rather than true semi-permanent coupled DMUs/EMUs.
I was actually across the tracks from the Adams yard like a week and a half ago. Was so excited when I saw the two RTL-IIIs still there.
It was so surreal, seeing the abandoned Turboliners sitting quietly with the new ACS-64s passing them. The two don't even look out of place next to each other irl because of the RTL rebuilds. And you could easily confuse an RTL-III for an Acela if you don't know what you're looking at (the guy at the model train shop I stopped at earlier today did just that before I told him they're Turboliners).
forgot to mention: I posted a couple of the pictures I took of them to Twitter if anyone wants to check em out twitter.com/DavidNightjet/status/1400212569902792706?s=20
Could you make a video about Amtrak's F and E-units? I know they were inherited equipment, but I still think they deserve some love since they played a huge role in Amtrak's beginning as their first few locomotives.
i usually have a very good memory for dates but i dont seem to in this case. my family (mom, dad a GTW employee, my sister and i) went to Kalamazoo from Port Huron on an RTL turboliner when they were running. My sister ended up going to school in K-zoo but it wasnt until 1980. i dont remember being 15 when we road the train but i must have been. our neighbor Pete Mainguy was a conductor for Amtrak and he invited my dad and i up to the power unit to watch the scenery for about 10 or 15 minutes. i just cant seem to remember being that old when we did this.
i love your videos. you are clear and concise and keep them to a reasonable length. keep them coming
Not only I am interested in the Engines of Amtrak series, learning the history of various passenger locomotives. I also enjoy the comedic anime skits you add in the vid which made me laugh. Good adding of comedy.
Towards the end of their career in the Midwest, Amtrak's RTG Turbos operated with their cafe cars next to one of the powered end cars. The cafe car would serve to divide the regular 2x2 coach seating on most of the train from a small first-class section with 1x2 premium "business-class" seating and services. Also interesting to note that while the French trainsets had baggage space with access doors on each side, I do not recall them running on trains that offered checked baggage service.
How did I forget that Rensselaer was the RTL service center! As someone who goes to RENSSELAER Polytechnic Institute, I love that kind of “local” rail history! As always, love the video and the info, and keep up the awesome videos! Enjoy your summer!
How did I not know that the rtl existed??! I even came across the yard in new haven on Google earth and was super confused about what that train set was, and I couldn’t find anything about it. Thanks for this video. Explains a lot.
I remember seeing Turboliners running when I was a little kid. They were on what (I know now) was the old New York Central line through Whiting, Indiana.
They also split and went south through Dyer. I remember seeing them in Whiting park and Dyer when I was a kid and through my teen years. I did get to ride one from NYC to Rochester NY. It was so cool. I remember it being fast and the huge windows. It was really cool.
12:21 I never thought BFB Woody would appear on an AmtrakGuy365 video
yoo tristar
the song i uploaded
am happy now :)
in al seriousness, its awesome that this remake was made.the turbotrain was always my favourite amtrak trains.
its nice that it mainly comes out of Chicago the Turboliners in the beginning
Amtrak seems to like trying to rebuild a locomotive time that they’re actively replacing
Well the idea was to let NY state take them over. Watch, Amtrak will freshen up the Superliners, Viewliners, Horizons & Amfleets & try to sell them to States after they get new Siemens Airotrains.
You should remake all the EOA thumbnails to the modern one you use for the new ones! great vid
lmao I just realized you are remaking them completely so nvm
Fun Fact: Although the P1234A5 horn was widely used on the turbotrains, maney ended up with different horns too. There are photos of them with Leslie RS5T’s and SL4T’s even.
I was hoping you would remake this video! Amazing btw I love your modern editing and commentary style
There’s a turboliner set (with phase V paint scheme) laid up about 10 minutes from my house. Took some pics the other day.
My dad built the prototype of the last turbo and did all the test on it. Everything passed with flying colors. Still complains to this day about supersteel messing everything up, ac wasn't the only problem, all the water was stored above the toilets, when the train would power down and lose air pressure all the toilets would over flow.
Nice remake. This is such a cool train. I also enjoyed the love live clips added in.
I'm starting to think that Amtrak should build more Turboliners for the Northeast Corridor, and that proposal should be accepted.
Kind of a shame these got retired and cut up, i think i would’ve enjoyed riding these instead of the old amfleet cars my whole life lol
Finally! We always love new remade videos!
It’s really cool.
Since the Turboliners retired there hasn’t been any new equipment for Amtrak’s Empire Corridor Service with the current equipment being GE P32AC-DMs and Amfleets! Siemens could be building a Dual Mode version of the SC-44 or ALC-42 Charger (I don’t know which Charger it is based off tbh) with MTA Metro North railroad already ordered 27 of them in December 2020 and for NYSDOT to order some Dual Mode Chargers for Amtrak to use them on the Empire Corridor and to replace GE P32AC-DMs and the Amfleets being replaced by Siemens Ventures as that is what’s happening with Amtrak Midwest and Amtrak California but that will have to wait in the future!
Imagine if they would bring them back to service that would be so cool :)
Hopefully one of the Turboliners gets preserved.
more LoveLive! girls appearing on your video tho. thanks for remaking the video. glad you didn't include that shrilling horn. i always lower my volume everytime i rewatch your 1st Turboliner video
It’s a real shame that the last Amtrak RTG was scrapped this month. At least one of the French RTG’s is still around
are you talking about the half of one that was sitting down in southern indiana for years ? i havent been down there in a while i was curious it was still there
I love Engines of Amtrak thanks for making this
Any idea on the exact location of the Turboliner maintenance facility in Chicago
The same thing plagued the Amtrak turbos that did in the UP's turbine-electric units; they use almost as much fuel at idle as they do at full speed. Turbines do not have a low idle speed.
I am sorry to point that there is an error about the French RTGs. I am a Canadian who have used them a lot running between Paris and Caen and there were running at 180 km/h (115 mph). These trains were used for many decades and have a great reputation. The same trains were also used between Lyon and Bordeaux and again I travelled on them.
I also remember the Montrealer that Amtrack was bringing to Canada in the nineties but never reached its full speed.I remember hearing the hissing sound of the turbine and I immediately taught of the RTG and here it was in Amtrack livery at St-Lambert station. The problem with EDM is that they make locomotive designed for long haul traction of freight where weight is not an issue as you need large pulling force and relatively slow speed to cover the very long distances. Nothing really efficient for passenger transport. Europeans were and are still more advanced on this although Bo,mbardier surely now makes trains much more suitable for passenger service.
Fun Fact: That A Amtrak Turboliner Number 59 Is At A Junkyard In Dugger Indiana Along With A Turboliner Coach For Drivers To Pass Even Railfanners Find It Including Gametrain Productions
Looks like AmtrakGuy365's computer finally started working again.
Rohr, who built Amtrak's RTL Turboliners, also was the builder of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) railway's gen 1 rail car fleet (type A aerodynamic nose cab and type B passenger car) as well as the decommissioned series 1000 rail cars of BART's sister system WMATA MetroRail.
First also Amtrak history is really historical
I've never heard of the turboliner I've only heard of the metroliner
Do you plan on doing a video on the LRC? It's something that I find absolutely fascinating. And apparently they were used by Amtrak, despite most people associating them with VIA.
I would love love love to see a video about the UAC Turbo
Maybe the UAC Turbotrain can use its own episode too.
9:06 welcome to my local station 😅
I was not expecting this
It’s better than the original
@@joshteshek1155 it is :)
The patriotic livery was so cool... Amtrak needs to bring it back.
There are pics of the turboliners in montreal canada on the adirondak.
You have earned a new subscriber :)
Why don’t Amtrak just sell the remaining sets off to other railroads who would benefit from it?
This is pretty cool although you did miss out one part that that I found out, apparently there's an original RTG turbo liner set somewhere in Indiana I believe that's still in its phase three paint scheme yet it's kind of been abandoned although it is in pretty good condition considering what the other ones look like
I've seen the new Via rail trainsets. They actually remind me a lot of these. What with the cab car in the back.
Looking back on the story of the RTL sets, rather than attempting to rebuild the existing turbo engines, they could have probably succeeded better by converting the existing sets to trailing sets that could be attached to a standard locomotive like the P32. Especially now that the Ethan Allen Express is in need of control cabs. Seems like such a waste of equipment now.
Even being so farfetched after the fact, Metroliner's got that type of conversion and the more modern Talgo and Airo sets have that type of cab car system. Just feels like a lack of foresight.
Kind of weird hearing about an RTG abbreviation that isn’t a Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator.
Those Turbolienrs were failures during revenue service, but they’re will still be a part of the history book of Amtrak. Also, one of the 2 Turboliners sets from the New Brunswick Yard in New Brunswick, New Jersey should be donated to the Illinois Railway Museum, The other one at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis and the 3rd one from Cedar Hill, New Haven, Connecticut to the Danbury Railway Museum.
the pain of almost all the graphics not being centered correctly
The remake yay
I wish engines of New York Central was in this channel
Those trains looks sleek for their time. Would have done better if they ran under straight electricity, i.e., third rail and overhead wires and pantograph.
I like Penny Lane in the background
3:07 ah yes, the number 26,5805 is a real number
I live locally in the area of North Brunswick, recently I was able to get a close up view of the remaining Turboliners at ADAMS MOW base. really interesting seeing them there, usually used for fire training and such I believe. Employees even have the lights on in the cars of the trainsets at night
footage of the remaining Turboliners, ruclips.net/video/Phx_thGCZbw/видео.html
Those RTLs look great in the Acela livery. I like the look of those more than that ugly liberty trainset we have in the NE
Excuse me? The Avelia looks just fine
Tbh when I first saw those sets in that livery it made me look sick but I’ve learned to like the livery especially with the pellets on the cars!
@@supermarionathan1426 the RTLs or Liberty sets?
@@NERJ607 Nah. The Power car doesn't even match up with the coaches and the whole thing looks like a kid's toy. And it's not much faster than the Acela sets already in use. I think Amtrak could have found a much better replacement
@@aj3751 No the Liberty Sets are fine it’s the track that’s the problem. It needs more infrastructure because the track we have now prevents the Liberty Sets from going at 200 MPH. If we’re going to have high speed Amtrak needs to build its own set of tracks and a high speed line because using tracks that belong to freight companies (NEC does not count as it’s owned by Amtrak) is obviously not helping Amtrak from having trains go faster!
Lesss go another Episode even though it’s a remake
good video but i like the old videos better. maybe its nostalgic or something?
This time the Amtrak has some welcome motives
Can’t believe you got sponsored for the first time!
Yes
I love the rohr turboliner
Finally
There’s something I don’t get. When the RTL train sets were being sold off, why didn’t Amtrak save the cars in the set and sell off just the power cars, that way they still could’ve had a couple dozen extra cars on standby? If the cars had an all-American coupling system, wouldn’t they mean they could’ve been compatible with a typical Genesis unit?
1:23 Bruh this is some Japanese Limited Express..
I wish there're more RTL 3 trains. Turboliners are better.
It’s impossible to understand how he got the turboliner in Trainz considering it’s unavailable to download
It was sent to me privately so I can’t redistribute it on my own.
I guess that makes sense, but I’m still wondering if anyone is interested in doing it because there isn’t a single turboliner set on the download station (the horns don’t count)
You don’t have to do this if you want to, but maybe ask the guy to have the truboliner set public
The auto generated captions are so broken lol
(9:29)
are you planning on removing the old episodes?
i saw him at 69k subs
" The sets were numbered 58 to *69* "
nice
Hello. Thanks for your videos. Please Tour On subtitles option. Sure, you will have more subscriptiors.
It's sad for the American railway industry that U.S. persons generally prefer automobiles and airplanes for travel, and that trucks took over much of the freight
This has become shared at best
In your next video, can you change Edward’s Voice To EnterprisingEngine93?
Nice
Awesome!
Excellent ~√🎉❤
why are the auto generated subtitles in vietnamese
do siemens charger & turbotrain
Forgot the LRC
Can you do the remake of the E60
Yohane!!
2:30 and 10:02 request of sauce for marinara collection
Turbo = Turboliner
If that's right
How tf does a company "steal"a trainset
Do A SC-44.
hi
Turboliner > Talgo
(Right?)
Too bad a Gas turbine --> 3-Phase AC traction motor design wasn't investigated.
The GT powerplants would have proven much more reliable being operated at a constant RPM.
(as helicopter operators the world over have recognized)
Wait theres FP45 lmao
Ok
Where can I get nice pics of those blue sncf versions?
Wait I am the only comment well first I guess, good video
