I live in San Jose, California and I would love to see those locomotives back then running on the Southern Pacific. The P30CH is a beautiful locomotive, it’s a shame that none are in existence. But still being remembered back then on Amtrak.
Actually, the P30s didn't replace the SDP45s on the SP Peninsula. They were being used temporarily since the SDP45s had to be used on freight assignments or rebuilt and SP's 3 new GP40P-2s hadn't arrived yet.
Fun fact: Amtrak P30CH 715 was involved into a wreck in Harvey Illinois in 1979, it crashed into a parked Illinois Central Gulf freight train. Amtrak P30CH 715 was damaged beyond repair and scrapped same goes to the ICG GP40 leading the parked frieght train as well, but the second unit ICG GP40 3029 was repaired and returned to service, but in 1984 is was involved another accident it was retired and use for spare parts.
My dad worked for rock island, then CNW, finally BN....my dad learned to love the GEs....he modeled one in HO back in 1984, i repeated the kitbash in 1992-1993 modeling 2.
Another complaint was, the P30CH accelerated slow. Crews loved the F40PH because it accelerated fast. Crews liked the F40PH more then the P30CH but liked the P30CH more then the SDP40F. I don't care, I love the Pooch.
Aesthetically, the P30CH is my Favorite of all Amtrak Locomotives. I don't really care if it was a failure. All I can say is, *AT LEAST ONE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PRESERVED.*
@@tigolbitties8352 I thought the Dash 7 and Dash 9s always kept on blowing up their turbo chargers. And I swear GE probably gets those turbo chargers from China.
AmTrak used the ALCo S2 switcher Right? I just looked up "Amtrak 1970s switchers" and I found the ALCo s2 switcher model locomotive. Looks like the ALCo S2 was real at one point but its scrapped in favor for the MP15AC [every railroad uses the MP15AC as a switcher but for the long island railroad it uses the MP15AC for freight service]
I love locomotives that can be described as looking like one giant brick Hard to describe exactly which ones fit, but visually very distinct in the aesthetic
He didn't mention this. But one pf the p30's was involved in a head-on collision with a parked freight train in harvey Illinois in 1979 (i think) Locomotive #715
The generator car shown early in the video looks like a demotored B unit of an E-series locomotive. The Providence and Worcester Railroad has one of these (or at least had one a couple of years ago) that I have seen in service on a fan trip.
The Rio Grande used a converted Alco PB-1 for head end power. I always thought that the passenger train looked funny with two F units, a PB-1, and another F unit. ♡ T.E.N.
Man those old Amtrak commercials are fantastic. Being honest with you, I honestly believe that Amtrak would be smart to bring back TV commercials, so as to get their name back into the houses of the common American. Heck, why not have some radio and online commercials too?
The last run of the P30CH took place exactly ten years before I was born. Although none of these were preserved, I can kind of see why. It would be a bit embarrassing to preserve a locomotive that was unsuccessful. Also, can’t wait for the GP40TC.
I wondered about this. The photo when he says The Blue Ridge route is the train pulling into the station at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I wondered if this was the route called the Shenandoah. Harpers Ferry is on the old cheesie system line.
The Flexliners (Israeli version of Danish rubbernose trains) were guests for tests, as were the X2000, ICE1 and before that, the modified SJ and SNCF locomotives even painted in full Amtrak livery for test run before ordering the AEM7. They didn't borrow a Vectron though before ordering the ACS64.
Have you already done a clip on the SDP45s? I'd be interested in that. Those EMD F40PHs (passenger GP40-2s) were winners for Amtrak, but the rest of their purchases at the time were not. Good thing they still had E units in storage.
@Acerailfan3306 Trackside They died. Back then, AC wasn't standard in Cabs, really, so they just opened the window, and died when it fell out and hit them on their heads.
