Great video! Once again, absolutely superb editing with this episode. I'm also particularly interested with the song choice being mostly MF DOOM, since I recently got into his music. I also never knew that FM was still being considered to make engines after the 60s.
Unfortunately for 9280, it has been taken off of CSX's Rails due to Engine Failure back in October and also has Camshaft damage in the prime mover and oil spillage on the walkways and in the engine compartment was reported. This followed a defect reported with the cab heater on October 8th meaning it would of been poorly maintained when it was still with Pam Am Railways.
Yup, still plenty of C40-8's rolling around up here on the former Pan Am. Sometimes the lashups on NS trains in Ayer MA get a bit odd when NS cant get an SD60E up here with ACSES PTC and they end up having to put one of the old Dash 8s on the front. Great and funny video! Also, 7489's horn sounds like ass
C40-8 is my favorite GE model by looks. And the K5LA is my favorite chime arrangement of all Nathan models. Thanks for putting together such a detailed history on the original Dash-8's!
Didn't Southern Pacific test them out at Tehachapi (sp) and the road was impressed enough to buy them? Have heard it said that those Dash-8s were instrumental in getting GE in the top position in sales of railroad locomotives. I think the hood unit, late 1980s GEs are the best looking engines they made.
Great video The C-40-8 was my favorite locomotive to operate on CSX when it was in the lead of the consist The old control stand, was a plus over the desktop control stand on the dash 8’s. Never had a problem with the throttle powering out the 16 cylinder prime mover. The locomotive would dig in and keep pulling. The handle on the K5LA whistle gave you the cadence equine to other engineers!

when I was doing research there was another Dash 8 standard that was used as a training locomotive for first responders, they first used a a school bus.
I don't really like to publicly nitpick but the Dash-8s didn't have the HDL engine. That was used for the AC6000. They still had the old FDL. Otherwise good video!
Thank you for these videos! I am amazed at just how much of a learning opportunity they are. I think it would be interesting to make a video about the most recent iteration of the SD40-3 "square cabs". Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Interestingly, during the early days of CSXT, there was a faction of management unflatteringly referred to as the "Chessie Mafia" that opposed the initial purchase of these locomotives. The operations department had to go directly to then CSX CEO John W. Snow to get these units ordered.
Been a subscriber of yours before I even started Railfaning. I appreciate you checking the video out, I hope your videos being featured hasn't been an issue
Great video. An interesting thing about 9280, it never actually had the standard PTC you find on the rest of CSX. 9280 is only equipped with ACSES PTC, which is used mainly on passenger railroads in the northeast, including the MBTA which Pan Am ran on a lot. Most of Pan Am's locomotives were equipped with it, including 7627. But, when it got repainted, the unit never actually got standard PTC, and it to this day only has ACSES, which is why you never see it leading outside New England. CSX today only has (to my knowledge) two widecab Dash 8s left active, which are on very short time now. Many of Pan Am's Dash 8s recently got sold to the new startup shortline Berkshire & Eastern and the remaining ones are still active on former Pan Am trackage that CSX still owns. 9280 has now rejoined the Pan Am units in New England and will probably stay there until more newer power arrives to replace them.
That explains why 9280 has been running around up there in the NE recently. Its nice to know that CSX didnt sell the rest of them off and gave them away. 9280 says its still on the roster, but I guess that may have changed while I was working on the video.
@@buccaneerrailfanning1776 it is still on the roster, it’s just operating on the former Pan Am right now. The MEC Dash 8s are still owned by CSX. The Berkshire & Eastern took over operations of the Pan Am Southern in September and they bought some of the MEC Dash 8s but not all of them
@@buccaneerrailfanning1776 They used CSX 9280 for the engine pool which basically just had it trail as foreign power on BNSF and other railroads. Then after that they brought it back up north
Used to love running these. They had crazy side lateral motion at 60 mph in idle but they were fun to run. Closest engines csx had to alco sounding. I like the video just get rid of the ghetto rap in the back 😂
Of course, next video will be returning to a country theme. I like to have themes in these videos, and MF DOOM was fitting since he was sort of a popular underground rapper during the 90s.
@@buccaneerrailfanning1776ohh yeah I heard that too. Great video as always. Are you ready for the next locomotive in the series? One of my favorite locomotives as younger boy. They are Conrail locomotives.
Very interesting video but I’m not sure what hitting school busses has to do with the reputation of the locomotive. Generally speaking, crossing accidents are not the fault of the train.
