  • The EMD F59PHI has become a staple and icon of west coast American train travel. With a streamlined wedge shape and three window isolated cab, they sure have an identity and image of their own. The PHI has it's roots all the way back in EMD's 1985 freight product; the GP59. But what else got the F59PHI to where it is today hosting a nearly 30 year career? Find out in this new episode of Engines of Amtrak!
Thank you to everyone who submitted photos and videos to be used in this video! I'll likely reach out to you guys again for future episodes considering the amount of submissions I received being very high. Apologies if your picture or video wasn't featured, I tried to fit in as many as I could in and have it make sense with the script in mind. Those unused photos and videos may be used in a future project down the line though.

Check out the description for the RUclips channel links of those who provided photos and videos! Also, this will be the last big video for a little while as I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks soon! I hope this will hold y'all over for a bit while I take a break from videos. After my vacation, I'll be back to making videos and big projects as usual. I may have one more smaller video after this one coming out, but I'll see how things play out. Anyway, my plan for Engines of Amtrak is going to be switching between new episode and remade episode. For example, I started doing the remake of the SDP40F episode, then switched to the new F59PHI episode, the next episode will be a remake of the P30CH and then so-on-so-forth until I run out of remakes. After all the remakes are done, it will be all new locomotives I haven't covered yet! With that said, I'm aiming for a new Engines of Amtrak episode every month or two months. Again, this will be dependent on what's going on for me so it could change for better or worse, but that's my ideal plan going forward. Anyway, thanks for watching and for all the positive feedback thus far! I'm really enjoying making this series again!

The F59PHI is definitely my favorite locomotive ever. It’s not just because I like the way they look. I also like them because they bring me so much nostalgia. I grew up around Los Angeles during the 2010’s so I saw these locomotives on Amtrak and metrolink all the time and I’m very sad that they’re gone.

I have seen two of Amtrak Surfliner F59PHI locomotives in 2016 at my visit to the San Diego Grand Central Station. They are pretty cool video of these locomotives. It is sad that they discontinued in service today, but still being remembered by Amtrak. At least we know Metra had purchased the ones from Amtrak Surfliner. Also I want to point out that the Caltrans engines weren’t named by crews, because there is no information of it in the wiki of the locomotives.

Very nice video on the F59PHI. I would say yours and coasterfan’s video are beautifully well done. And fun fact: a Pacific Surfline train collided with a Semi in California. The reason why was because the driver stopped at a red stop light while crossing the tracks but didn’t know that the trailer was stuck on the tracks. And moments later the Surfliner collided with the semi truck which damaged the front nose of the engine. The incident was caught on tape and can easily be found on RUclips.

I remember watching videos of Amtrak surfliners throughout my childhood and I just loved the horn and the F59PHIs. I always dreamed of going to California and see these locomotives in real life. When I heard news that Metra was going to be purchasing these F59PHIs I pretty much screamed in excitement! It felt as if I was dreaming cause it felt so unreal! Getting to see these in my home was such a dream come true. I live very close to a metra line that uses these F59PHIs so every now and then I hear the horns and E-bells going when they stop at the Grand-Cicero station. I was only able to catch the F59PHIs twice but in the future I’ll definitely be looking into catching more of them! I heard a story that a Metra engineer said that they loved these locomotives and wished they purchased these new compared to the mp36phs as they were just more reliable. Definitely will be enjoyed in their new homes and Metra railfans can enjoy seeing them. Awesome video BTW!

Amazing video!!! I'm very grateful to be a part of one of your narrated video series!!! I saw my picture of one of Metrolink's Ex GO-Transit Units at 1:38, which is super awesome!!! I've always loved both the EMD F59PH and F59PHI locomotives from all different railroads, from Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, Amtrak Cascades and Piedmont services, to the Los Angeles Metrolink Commuter Railroad, San Diego Coaster, Seattle Sounder Transit, just everything about them is amazing...especially those that have the beautiful aerodynamic design through their streamlined cab, and the streamlined side skirts covering the fuel tank with the rounded roofline, I just really enjoyed growing up, watching them on the many railroads that were local to me in my home-state of California!!! Great Job man!!! :)

0:28 look! West Coast Express! That is a little known commuter system in Vancouver, where I live! Fun fact: not only do they use F59PHIs but they also use MotivePower locos, happy to see my hometown represented here!

Quick fact: an Amtrak F59PHI actually hit a truck in Oxnard, CA back in 2005. EDIT: Amtrak 458 slammed into a stopped truck on the tracks. The light turned red, which means that Fox River Grove pretty much repeated itself. This time, nobody was killed

Is it just me or does the f59phi seem to perfectly match the superliner cars to the point that the locomotives might just be superliners converted into locomotives.

Only 2 Canadian rail agencies have the PHI's WCE in Vancouver BC and AMT/EXO in Montreal QC.
VIA Rail Canada was gonna buy 78 of these to replace the LRC and F40PH-2's but went with 21 P42DC's as part of an Amtrak order instead.
