  • In this video (just shot it and uploaded it, completely unedited) I show you one of the many, but simplest ways to wire in a keyed ignition switch to your motocross bike. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for sharing this information, its very informative.
    Although i think what would be better is if in place of the key there was a hidden switch. I say this because all it takes is for you to lock the bike with the key and someone to come along, see the ignition barrel, locate the wires under it, snip them which would then render the key in your pocket redundant and the bike would start.
    They don't even have the trouble of connecting the red and black together which is great for them as it saves them a step.
    What i suggest for anyone thinking of doing this is to use the exact same wiring but wired to a hidden toggle/push button somewhere on the bike.
    This saves the hassle of trying to find an ignition barrel like the one in the video and saves you from the potential security weaknesses that come with it.
    Two things will happen, either the thief will realise theres a hidden kill switch, which will take too long to figure out and deter them, or they will think the bike doesn’t start and cut their losses and move on.
    Thanks again for the video.

    READ EDIT BELOW:
    Unreal the interest this video has had to people. Originally I wanted to supermoto this bike, but got all the way done and sold it.
    Clarifying questions for people;
    The circuit for the key runs off the motorcycles powergrid. The fact that it technically has no stock onboard battery means there’s no battery to drain unless the accessories are left on (turn signals, lights, etc.) The aftermarket stator charges the battery. And power is only supplied when the bike is kicked over (fuel pump activates) and the fact when it is in running from the crank sensor allows power to be distributed where needed.
    The trailtech stator kit supples a higher output so accessories can be run without the affect of additional draw on the original powersource (the stock stator and pickup). With the stator kit, it runs a battery separate from the bikes system, as in it does not need the battery even connected to run the motorcycle. It will function fine without it hooked up.
    The reason a reverse polarity key is needed is because these motorcross motorcycles like to be set in an “active draw” mode, or “always open” system for easier starting and a constant go. Which allows the fuel pump to activate swiftly when the crank sensor and intake are activated.
    It is not a traditional circuit. Purchasing a traditional key will not allow the proper functionality of the starting mechanism. In this case, a traditional key would allow the bike to run when the ignition is switched to the left and the key is out. And not run when the key is in and turned to the right. So for obvious reasons, that wouldn’t favor the application.

    So basically when key is removed, kill switch is engaged I assume ?

    • @unluckyeddie6967
      @unluckyeddie6967 2 года назад +3

      Yeah think about it like a main relay in a car when the key is turned it activates that wire so then it’s off the kill switch and then you can kickstart it or u can add a Magic button “
      Electric start”

    could you maybe post an amazon link to a switch like this that would work. All the switches i see are 415v idk if that would work or not but i didnt want to fry anything and theres not many places that talk about doing it this way but it seems super easy I just dont want to order the wrong voltage or something but i would greatly appreciate it. I have looked on amazon for hours and cant find a 12v switch like the ones you got but i know nothing about this stuff im trying to learn as I go.

    • @aidanvelthuis1267
      @aidanvelthuis1267 3 года назад +1

      Nope, if you get a normal switch with 2 output wires I find it easier. Then you can just cut the fuel pump wire and splice it in and it will prevent fuel from getting to the motor without it on

    • @aidanvelthuis1267

    Why can’t you just switch the two wires

    • @Tomahawks34
      @Tomahawks34 2 года назад

      No because turning the key completes the circuit so no matter which wire is connected the key needs to be in the on position to complete the grounding to the bike. I’m sure they make reversed key switches so that the circuit is connected when in the off position. If that makes sense
