    For people that are asking about what happened with this, the grappler is deployed by law enforcement and has made ~50 captures, most recently a month or so ago

      @@SW2799 based on a cursory glance, it looks like the grappler is used in Arizona, Missouri, California, also by the US customs and border protection agency. That's probably not an exhaustive list though, but just what I saw. I'm sure they're not fitting this into every car though, maybe just a couple to have around in case of a high speed pursuit. I'm sure it has to do with a cost benefit analysis each department runs

I got a better invention: BANNING HIGH-SPEED POLICE CHASES, LIKE IN MOST CIVILIZED COUNTRIES, specially now that radios, helicopters and surveillance cameras have been invented... I completely support any method to assist law enforcement's efforts to safely stop a vehicle chase.
    However, all the examples in this video are on rear wheel drive vehicles. The vast majority of cars are front wheel drive.
    Perhaps this Grappler would have some effect on FWD cars but, until I see proof, I have my doubts.
    Of course, most high performance cars are also RWD. So, this would give the police some chance of stopping a Challenger, Charger, Mustang, Camaro, ect.

    • @c182SkylaneRG
      @c182SkylaneRG 2 года назад +5

      Yeah, that was my thought as the SUV tried to get going again: "What about FWD?" It'd certainly slow them down and make the car more difficult to handle, but I've seen video of a car dragging a wheel at road speeds, before.

      The drive train isn't going to matter if one tire is immobilized and the escape vehicle is trying to drag the police cruiser. I know they showed the police can drop the lanyard and back away, but for an initial stop, this looks fabulous.

      @c182SkylaneRG 2 года назад +5

      @@contumelious-8440 That's a good point: the cruiser doesn't HAVE to disconnect. Cops will have to learn which cars have which drivetrains, or just make staying connected (or blocking escape paths) standard procedure.
      One thing I will say, though: once this device is perfected and widely distributed, it's gonna put a real crimp in Hollywood. :) No more dramatic high speed chases when every viewer knows the cops can stop them in seconds with one of these.

    • @nomore6167
      @nomore6167 2 года назад +2

      @@c182SkylaneRG As much as I abhor them, I don't think car chase scenes will ever be eliminated (or even toned down) in the movies, especially since they keep getting featured in more movies and the scenes keep getting longer. It's as if the directors don't realize how boring they are for many people. Regarding cops being able to stop people in seconds with this device, however, I'd say that's overstating it. Based on this video, the cruiser needs to be almost touching the fleeing vehicle and needs to be positioned within a fairly precise location in order to deploy this device. Nevertheless, it is a good idea, but I'm concerned about that bit about pricing. That made it sound like the guy is going to charge as much as possible, making profit his priority rather than safety (which is capitalism at its "finest", but contradicts what the guy was saying was his motivation).

    • @Patrick.Weightman
      @Patrick.Weightman 7 лет назад +28

      What do you think the red car was...
      The question is in the differentials, not the drivetrain.

    • @Mirandorl
      @Mirandorl 7 лет назад +8

      For rear wheel, the net is enough. For front wheel they use the tether because FWD could still drag the rear wheels if they are freewheeling type.

    • @tornut24
      @tornut24 7 лет назад +1

      XiferTehPenguin I think you guys forget that the brakes are more powerful than the drivetrains most of the time. Ever seen a guy doing a burnout?

    • @angsta22
      @angsta22 7 лет назад

      If you notice the red car even tried to weave hard to avoid the tether... FAIL...

    • @angsta22
      @angsta22 7 лет назад

      Even with the best of front wheel drive you are not going to pull a locked up brakes police cruiser.. No way in hell would you be pulling it.. even an AWD sports car would have trouble if caught in traffic and couldnt just fly.. they'd be too light to overpower the cruiser before spinning wheels and getting nowhere fast...

    They had a better device 20 years ago on the discovery channel show beyond 2000, countdown 2000, something like that, but it was a square little remote control rocket on wheels with a wire antenna on top of it, and when it went underneath the car and the antenna made contact with the metal it would short out the car instantly. It could be launched from a farther distance than the cargo net around the wheels. Much safer.

    When I saw the video title it caught my attention because in the late 90's I came up with a similar idea. I was seriously considering fabricating a prototype, but I discussed it with an engineer friend who thought it was silly. After that I started thinking of what seemed to be insurmountable issues rather than pressing through. I think I could have done what this guy did but I gave up.
    My advice: If you have enough creativity to conceive the idea, you have enough brains and will to see it to fruition. DO IT!

    • @smadaf
      @smadaf 2 года назад +2

      Exactly! I've had a few ideas that I let other people discourage me in (some of them technological, some of them based on services); other people later got the same ideas, ran with them, and (in the case of Airbnb) made billions. The people who discouraged me were friends and relatives; they loved me; they weren't trying to cause a problem: but they were wrong about my inventions, and things might have been much different if I hadn't let them stop me.

Nope. ....somebody else made it. :(
