"That's a pretty long password for someone who doesn't know the difference between a pdf and an executable" throwing some SHADE
It's very true but presumably it also opened something that looked like a document with instructions on how to make a "safer" password, which incidentally would help the hacker once that pattern shows up in the log.
(my amateur take on it, your comment was the only one i saw about that clip)
It could have been a PDF file with an embedded executable, since it is possible to embed an executable in a PDF file and launch it (it was done in 2010 without exploiting any vulnerabilities, with JS disabled), these days it mostly depends on the reader used to open the PDF but certainly PDF readers present other vulnerabilities, ebooks also present similar problems (for the same reason).
Miss Chief
It’s easily debunkable as you can see the file types under a Details listview on windows folders.
Even if you spoof the file extension by changing the binary hexadecimals using slack space methods.
It’s also common sense...
If your company has been hacked and it’s the panic in the inside because there are hackers who took employees identities, any brain with a IQ of +10 should be suspicious when receiving that kind of emails.

RUclipsrs really need to account for their viewer-base. The younger, the more likely they are to not know what a white hat is. The Hated One Yeah, the interruption is annoying
Yeah, the constant interruptions with clips are incredibly annoying. They do that in all of these Technique videos and they need to stop.
"Hackers" is still my favourite movie. I never liked the visuals (I was a script kiddie) when I was younger, but found out years later when it was finally released on DVD, that the visuals were meant to show how a hacker can easily visualise everything. In particular, the final hack scene with the building style representing file servers, is basically they can just walk through like a library and find/take what they want easily. I think it was a nice touch on the BS required for hollywood, but true to the nature.
so what are you now? CSE at NSA?
also their Chatrooms and Clients were an adapt to what later would be ICQ/MSN as p2p DM service.
they just stipulated that everything was in an overall dark net IRC and ppl could just DM you through your handle.

My dad is a IT and he goes nuts over "hacking" scenes. I love it.
@ChoppedBlade Cybersecurity experts ARE IT people. But yeah, there are many different types of "IT people". They still often have a more clear picture of what "Hacking" is like than most people, even if it's not their specialty.
@ChoppedBlade So... 1) How do you know he's talking about those kind of IT people and 2) Those who you are describing are the college students job levels, who have no interest in IT. If IT support is your career, you're definitely going to learn how it works.
ChoppedBlade And no theyre not stupid, any job that has any relevance to IT, means that they have to had at least a course or a class in computer science of sorts and me being a computer science student myself, i wouldnt say it is for stupid people, computer science is actually pretty difficult because theres so much to it, engineering, maths, economy and so on

Hackers is one of my all-time favorite movies. However, when combined with the fact that I wasn't feeling well at the time, the simultaneous and overlapping of accuracy and inaccuracy once gave me a nosebleed. Seriously. The accurate hacking is represented by some of the wildest and most potentially misleading visuals I have ever seen.
Spending a couple hours rummaging through databases for a file is shown by flying through a virtual city. Sure, the cool factor is off the charts, and it well represents the thrill, but it just perpetuates the "computers are magic" attitude Hollywood is only now just kinda sorta getting over. And that goes for most of the scenes of actual hacking.

The idea that in real life, many traffic lights are controlled over the internet and some with no real password requirements is absurdly unsettling.
The thing that boggles my mind is how does cable have a channel in which we can see what is going on by cameras placed in certain areas.
Actually, messing up with traffic lights is likely not very realistic. I remember seeing a picture of a traffic lights controller and there was an absurd amount of hardware for just a few lights. Some of that hardware was for remote access, fair enough. But it turns out that, due to the danger of those lights misbehaving, there's like a second computer which checks the main one is operating correctly, ie. making sure that there is no green light on both ways, minimum times are met, etc. So, even if someone were to take control of the main computer, I doubt they would be able to cause any accident.
I don't have a direct experience with this kind of system, but having redundancy and cross-checking computers is common practice in critical systems.
unfun fact. There exist insulin pumps and pacemakers in peoples bodies that can be remotely accessed for convenience - which can ofc also be hacked and subsequently be used for very unhealthy instructions.
im surprised he didnt talk more about live free or die hard, that movie shows a lot of real world infrastructure that can easily be hacked into.
Traffic lights in the phillipines are hacked and they party

Hollywood has to learn that with the correct atmosphere even realist hacking is cool. In Mr. Robot you could feel the tension building up while Elliot was writing lines of code and loading programs before getting caught

One tool worth mentioning that was used in The Matrix was the use of Nmap, which is a tool designed to sniff ports and fingerprint the OS it detects, obviously for the purpose for the movie they masked it under a different name. The CLI elements of what they showed is very Nmap-like, since it's a tool that can function as both GUI and CLI. I will say however that OS Fingerprinting with Nmap is very poor and is often very inaccurate, since it's unable to properly identify the OS and the version a system is currently running. Scanning against a Linux machine will often yield results like you're running Linux with 2.6.3 kernel as some generic Linux OS like an embedded system like RedHat or some other, when in reality you are really running Linux with 5.6.7 kernel or greater with lets say Ubuntu or Arch Linux.
so what tool would you recommend for os fingerprinting?
The one thing I feel I should mention about the content, is that a lot of the terminology and technology were quite different in the 80s and early 90s than they are today. There are also a few cases here where you can give them the benefit of the doubt or not, depending on how you interpret what they are saying. For example, the history of PC Anywhere and interacting with remote GUIs.

This guy is extremely knowledgeable and Wired should really stop with the 'funny' little edits during his explanations
The only thing I'd split hairs over was the Tron:Legacy bit, but that's more or less an argument over whether exploiting a physical system counts as social engineering. It's definitely part of hacking, otherwise DEF CON wouldn't do lockpicking contests.
I'd put that on the editor though, seeing as including something like that would be like me trying to explain why network engineers will argue over what layers are actually responsible for the issues they resolve on the job.
Yeah, a large part of pen testing is physical access, it's a perfectly normal attack vector; so while not in front of a computer, it's definitely "hacking" in the more general type. There's a good # of pen testing ted talks on YT where they talk about physical access they've gained in the past via social hacking, lock picking, etc., which some may not consider 'hacking' at first glance. Very interesting stuff.

That NCIS clip cracks me up. "What's that? a videogame?" lmfao
That was a pretty long password for someone who can't tell the difference between a pdf and executable file 😂😂😂😂😂
16:42 But the hacker disguised the exe as a PDF, so the OS made the victim think it was a PDF. The file is part innocent cover, part payload. Is that so unrealistic?
@DotA TV Which, if it was Adobe Reader... There are a number of bugs in previous years that would allow code execution when opening a PDF in Adobe. That's part of the reason Firefox, Chrome and even Edge have their own (limited) PDF viewers now.
me: *reading this interaction* ...yes
PDFs Can contain some javascript. In past years there have been multiple vulnerabilities that allowed a malicious script to drop a file on the system and then execute it

The one with the downloaded pdf file may be actually be very accurate. There are many already known vulnerabilities of software that reads pdfs that could get you remote access to a machine.
You missed the best part about the NCIS scene... Gibbs unplugging the whole computer and everything magically fixing itself!
Or the one where he shoots the computer screen to stop a hack leaving the computer completely untouched

Thanks to this I discovered Mr. Robot one of the best series ever

The guy at 4:00 wears sunglasses while in front of a pc... so, totally legit hacker, move on.
You don't rock a pair of GUNNAR™S when you type? This is what people did before those existed
Because of the screen not the keyboard, what idiot looks at the keyboard while typing

I'm surprised nothing was said about nmap being used in the Matrix Reloaded clip. It probably would have been used in the information gathering phase of the hack but it's still pretty accurate.
The reason why they haven't shown an example of Hackerman, for anyone wondering, is because Hackerman is the real deal.
the NSA would take the video down.
The best hacker movie is actually "Who Am I: no system is safe" that's the best and most accurate movie I've ever watch.
But wouldn't it be a good idea to actually show what's realistic compared to the rest of the movies.

@@Gabodxt whoami, nice name.
"A more accurate interface would be a console or terminal..."
*Shows html*
Come on, Wired.
What's wrong with HTML? It is still code you can see in a terminal
@@Puyols37 Sublime Text != terminal
@@Puyols37 HTML is not code
@D not really... I don't consider a "formatting" style to be code but that depends on your definition of code. And seeing "code in terminal" doesn't even make sense... does he mean the output that the code produces?
Html is not code nor a programming language, its a markup language
Love this, as an old FxP dude, also in The scene.

STOP INTERRUPTING THE PERSON SPEAKING WITH UN-FUNNY PAUSES WIRED!!!!
Truuyy
this is why the video is 20 minutes long
WIRED often does this in their Expert Analysis videos, presumably for the sake of humor. It’s quite annoying.
Keeping people watching longer makes their videos more popular
I think it's kind of funny, but they literally do it every half to two sentences
the evaluation on tony starks “phone hacking” holds a special place in my heart

i just want to meet a editor of this video bc i am impressed how he shows html and css codes when he talk about terminal and hacking codes.
samy kamkar discovered the flaws in visa cards, php and many more stuff. he is an internet legend
To discover flaws in PHP, all you have to do is try and write a PHP script.
can you do it? please don't make these rubbish replies
Kinda cool I never made the connection there. He is a legend.
@@ZintherZ It's a joke on how php is awful to use. Which in the newer versions is not so much the case thankfully
Yeah, Wired shoulda put his name in the video title. I almost didn't watch, since I knew as a computer security professional, I wouldn't be learning anything, but if I'd known it was ma boy Samy, I would've been all over it. That being said, TV & movie hacking is usually so bad it inspires me to laugh wildly and/or groan horribly, but Samy is such an even-keeled and diplomatic guy that we kinda got robbed of an opportunity for vicarious unrealism pains here.
