I like how she’s technical but doesn’t take it all so seriously, or get mad at actors for just saying their lines

    • @stuartcrowder1

you could tell she was intelligent enough to appreciate that not only do films and TV want too / have to dramatise court proceedings for storytelling and entertainment, but also just by the language she used she made you aware that she also acknowledged that the actors were playing a character written for them so cannot really be blamed or responsible for any inaccuracies that were portrayed. I loved her! Bring her back!

Of course everything is about race. We can't take a breath without someone talking about race. We talk about how oppressed black people were historically, but we don't talk about their factual statistics of the crimes committed by said race. It doesn't support people's agenda so they choose to ignore it.

@@shannondaylie563 No, I meant exactly what I said. She seems like she would be an engaging professor/teacher. I wouldn't be surprised if she has taught a class here or there in the past.

A Time To Kill is one of my go to movies. It made me a fan of court room dramas, and even helped me decide that I wanted to become an attorney. I wanted to fight for the good guys. Unfortunately I had a career counselor talk me out of following my dream because, in her words, "I don't believe it would be a good fit for u, u have a small child and it is very demanding" I now wish I had not allowed her to crush my spirit.

22:50 "the gravity of the charges"
That phrase just put a smile in my face. As a non-native speaker I would have probably used the phrase "the severity of the charges", and in Germany we would say "die Schwere der Anschuldigungen" which verbatim translates to "the heavyness of the accusations". But charges having gravity just made me laugh :D

In English, gravity has long held the additional definition of "something serious and consequential to the point of concern and necessary evaluation." It's Latin-based. (Also see: gravitas, gravis.)

I used to do night court arraignments all the time. Prosecutors and Judges and even court officers are a lot more relaxed and friendlier since it is not as busy。 Also, what she didn't mention is that federal practice and state practice are very different. Completely different sets of rules and procedures.

I've been in a number of courtrooms over the years (just because I enjoy the suspense and it's warmer in the courtroom than on the street). I've seen likely a few thousand cases settled, and I've never (not once) heard the judge bang a gavel.
