Former Diamond Thief And Detective Rate 7 Jewel Heists In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? | Insider

- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2021
- Former burglar Octave "Oky" Durham and art detective Arthur Brand look at seven jewel-theft scenes from popular TV shows and movies and rate them based on realism.
They look at "Ocean's Eight" (2018), "King of Thieves" (2018), "Lupin" S1E1 (2021), "Man on a Ledge" (2012), "The Return of the Pink Panther" (1975), "Cradle 2 the Grave" (2003), and "The Hatton Garden Job" (2017).
Are safes as difficult to crack as in the movies? Are jewel heists meticulously planned, or normally smash and grab? Are larger gems more valuable than smaller ones? How can you tell if a movie diamond looks fake? And do thieves use any unusual gadgets to steal gems?

Former Diamond Thief And Detective Break Down 7 Jewel Heists In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? - Кино
I love how 85% of the video is Oky going, "I could have done better," and Arthur being like, "Yeah, you totally could."
Ahaha what an underrated comment, amazing
I burst out laughing. Thank you!
Oky our guy from.the netherlands
So true
He said they could have done better. He never said anything about himself
Dang, a former art thief now working with a detective? That sounds like an awesome movie idea tbh
There's already multiple series that have a criminal work with a cop like White Collar
@@Just999Me I would have been really disappointed if no one mentioned white collar.
@@lawsome2068 ikr same
you mean like White Colar?
Hollywood, hear this guy out
Hearing him straight up admit, I did that, so many times was hilarious.
Or he just talking smack
@@unnamedchannel1237 he did a bunch of time in jail already for doing those things... Why would someone lie just to be thrown in jail?
@@swtorjunkie6171 sure he went to prison for some crimes. You totally trust that a criminal would not “stretch the truth” for a story to tell? If you trust criminals you are very naive
@@unnamedchannel1237 He's a famous master thief. That's the whole point of this series: having experts rate movies depicting what they do in real life. You can google him, but even the detective next to him acknowledges his ability. 🤷♀️
and he is so proud too lmao
I like the little brags he does, like "We have alot of simularities, he robbed the louvre but i robbed a van gogh and i'm real".
Holy Ravioli
Yeah but I think it’s due to the series being based on him
Honestly I think he’s just being a matter of fact.
How no comments
@virtu givenchy the comment had so many like but no one comments on it
I love how he was so unimpressed that he literally refused to rate the first heist.
That must be a first in this series, and I respect him for that.
He did miss a very real part of it, even tho they did the typical HWood trope of never having to reload. Those tools they were using to pop the deposit box locks are very real, except you have to reload after each pop. Now a days they are shaped like guns, the ones they were using require a hammer to smack them, it’s a nail gun for attaching wood to concrete or steel. You put a little “bullet” in but there’s no bullet, it’s just a charge, and it drives a steel post into a nail, if you don’t load a nail, that post will blow up almost any lock. It works incredibly well. Like unbelievably well. I’ve never seen a padlock survive one hit, a safety deposit box lock wouldn’t stand a chance. It takes a second to reload, so if there’s two locks on the box it doesn’t matter. They are super loud tho, but I guess an RPG is louder.
"Pathetic, I can do better diamond stealing than this movie"
@@KelticTim It's called a "Ramset," and the LockPickingLawyer makes great use of them in some of his videos, in case anybody wants to see this in action. Very similar to how the captive bolt stunner was used by Anton Chigurh in "No Country For Old Men."
@@cheshirecynic3061 Ramset is a brand, but you’re on it. I’ve had one for decades, and had no idea they were so versatile until Pick Boys video. I’ve put it to many good uses since then.
I love the idea that these two guys could be considered archenemies and they're just chillin' and rating some films side by side 😆

I think in that case he just didn't use lookouts, he explained that "if you are inside you are safe" or something along those lines. I agree though, more detail would be interesting.
There is a docu about how he steals 2 Van Gogh
the lookout is an easy point of failure. Drawing attention to the backdrop. Cops aren't going to look into every storefront or at all unless their attention is drawn to it. Hiding in plain sight is sticky without a crowd or other disguise. The car is just laughably obvious.

I like to think that Oky still has a few stolen paintings hanging on his walls
That'd be probably the dumbest thing you could do if you were trying to be legitimate and make a living telling your story of past crimes lol. Have evidence of other crimes not caught for in your own house lol.

The thing about Oky is that it's just matter of fact, it's not even humble brag. I can't imagine how someone could be that successful at what he did. I wonder if he has a biography? It means Master Thief.

I actually love Oky's smile! He smiles like a little kid but talks like an old soul. It's amazing how his personality doesn't match any thiefs's conceptions we have based on movies, he is so calm and logical it makes you think about how intelligent of a mind he has
He’s gotta have a pretty damn intelligent mind to have done all those heists, we don’t even know if he did them solo or with a team!
I guess thats why he was successful

I love that! It's so funny when people try to be friendly and throw a 2/10 out... He don't play tho 😂
Me too.
I think he is Dutch - so that makes sense
Hahahaha that’s a dutch guy for you😂😂
That’s dutch ppl bro
And when the Picasso from Athens was found, a policeman just dropped it in front of ten cameras and touched it casually barehanded so.... It was better off in the hands of the guy who stole it, who was an art lover and hang it on the wall to look at it, than the greek police force that retrieved it Dx
Wow
O U C H
As greeks, yeah we’re not very proud of our police😂😂
But if it's stolen from a museum, we all lose. Imagine if all art was stolen, hanging on some rich mans walls, locked away. There's no beauty in that.
Yeah ... That happened!!
The next day a brand (I think it was Ikea) did an add for a picture stand and it had the line - protect what is valuable - or something like that. Everybody was trolling them on the Internet!
I love this duo, especially Oky's vibe, they need a show of their own.
A small addendum, as a physicist, I can say that liquid nitrogen is not as dangerous as it sounds, you can casually pour it into your hand without any problems (the leidenfrost effect protects you), the problem is in the prolonged contact. As for the movie scene, you would need an absurd amount to freeze all that mass of metal, which would be unfeasible
Yeah, we use it to freeze stuff at work regularly and if something falls in, it is really not that hard to just... grab it out. Gloves off, though, because if there is a hole in the glove and it gets inside and trapped there... now that is trouble! Liquid ethane scares me more.
Yeah, the problem is more if it fell on your cloths, I think I would not be very fun.
Maybe it was really use on small lock mechanism, either by breaking them, or by shrinking them by thermal dilatation (well the opposite of thermal dilatation but I don't know the English world for that)
so, theoretically, would you be more safe dealing with liquid nitrogen naked
@@acookie7548 I see where you are going with this and I approve
yeah in fact a trick upperclassmen in my physics department do every year to spook freshmen is just get a tank of liquid nitrogen, a big empty box, and start pouring liquid nitrogen in and then drop random stuff into the box, let it freeze for a few moments, and then fish it out and let it shatter on the floor. Then lastly when they're done with it they just pour the liquid nitrogen out to the floor and make people scream
"i didnt watch the lupin series yet, because why should I you know, because the real lupin is sitting right next to me"
That was so sweet in a funny way 🤣🤣🤣🤣 love that one's a detective & the other was a former thief!
"I think he was watching adult movies in the safe" Oky is jokes and also his voice is insane
I heard dog movies, and I was at first confused and then alarmed.
I love the little smile that Detective Brand gives us as Oky is talking about the Oscar Wilde ring. These two seem like polar opposites yet you can tell that not only do they work together they get along quite well and respect each other.
Can we talk about Oky’s sweater…. LOVE!!!
It’s a rare piece of art
oky has drip
Grandma's type
Yes! Anyone knows what brand is it? I love it.
Looks like it could be a coogi sweater. One of the newer patterns
just to clarify: the reason for the consistent disparity in their ratings is (probably) that they are both rating it's realism _according to their experiences_ so the thief guy is rating things compared to a career of hundreds of successful robberies (and at least 1 not so successful one) and thousands of stories of how things work and how things go wrong, meanwhile the cop guy is rating more compared to the _bad_ thieves that actually left a real case to work with many of which are bad explicitly _because_ they think movies are good instructional materials, heck, he even goes on about exactly that happening a couple times in the video...kinda sounds like he's fanboying over the pink panthers really.
as he put it "I think that...around...7 or 8 percent has been recovered" so a disproportionate portion of his personal sample set falls into that outlier group...especially if that number is anywhere near as inflated as it reasonably would be.
to some extent maybe, but just because you haven't recovered a stolen painting, doesn't mean always you don't know how it was taken.
@@yourmum69_420 yep! but they are still both going to have disproportionately skewed views the [cop] likely moreso than the [thief] especially when the cop's job in the video is to provide the audience-representative perspective while the thief's is to laugh and/or groan at the clips and provide an expert opinion that appears good enough to justify the laughing and groaning to the audience.
how-to-craft-a-story wise it leaves the thief in a much better position to _actually_ act as an expert while sticking to their role in the story/presentation, they are also a lot more free to share information on how things actually work without infringing on things back in the real world.
The fact that you thought that people needed you to explain the obvious (in the form of run-on paragraphs without any capitalization) speaks volumes about narcissism.
"The real Lupin is sitting next to me"
Damn right he is
Oky's smug face when he was called the real lupin 😂
God I love this two
Thanks for bringing these guys back! But they still didn't react to White Collar please let them come back for a third time! :D it is the perfect series for them both.. its literally about an art thief and a cop

Omg. Yes. Hahaha.
This is my first time watching these two and they're like the real life Agent Burke and Neal Caffrey. Lol.
White collar is legit. One of those series that just suck you in...
I find it more scary that when he was listing stuff to be found in safe deposit boxes, he makes a point to mention finding photos of questionable stuff.
What's scary is the suggestion of that kind of thing being found as frequently in the boxes as diamonds or gold.
Oky once said “my no. 1 rule is talk smooth, be cool, have a fast car, and never touch anyone” legend.
So now you know .
Big up

I love the look on Arthur's face when Oky is going into detail about how he used to rob things. You can tell he's impressed with his knowledge and high IQ, even though he used to be a criminal.
Priceless!
I'm fascinated by former criminals using their expertise for good now. It's wonderful and I have so much respect for them. I find it the most credible expertise as well. It's so much fun to learn from and watch. It's so real.
